Uchu Sentai KyuRanger Episode 10- "The Little Giant Big Star!" Discussion
With fighting at least temporarily resolved, Lucky is told to return Kotaro to his home on Earth- despite the boy's wishes to become a KyuRanger.
Meanwhile, the Orion loses control & sets course towards the sun with almost everyone on board! Can they reverse things in time! As always you can view this episode via live stream on Saturday by heading over to Taima TV. They play other miscellaneous programs up until the live broadcast starts. Live Streams of the Superhero Time block start at 5:30 PM Eastern Standard Time on Saturdays. |
This sounds very cynical but why does it have to be Lucky? Why can't others get their spotlight for once? Remember in Gokaiger where Marvelous didn't hog out the spotlight all the time?

I like Kotaro. I wonder if he'll remain a regular character or leave and stay on Earth once the Earth Salvation arc ends.
Anyway, episode was okay. Once again, Lucky remains to be the reason why I'm not enjoying things as much. It never feels like he deserves to give out these big speeches. Yeah, he was defending Xiao because he was doing a semi-competent job, but it just feels less grand when it's being told by the asshole who just runs around and good things happen just because he keeps running. Kotaro wants to fight to liberate his home from Jark Matter, so his family is safe and his world can prosper, and this rouses Big Bear to lend him his power. Lucky wanted to fight because "Sounds like fun." Man, fuck Lucky. Xiao was kind of funny, kind of dumb. I know it's his shtick, but he was kind of teetering on the rope a lot. I did chuckle at the line that was basically "Xiao is a competent leader!" immediately to cut to Xiao screaming for his life, though. Naga has smiling practice. That's adorable. I love Naga~ |

This could've easily been Stinger's episode. He didn't want Kotaro on the team AND he was allies with Xiao longer than anyone else on the team. He could've told Bear about Xiao's growth since he witnessed it firsthand, he could've been the one to point out that, despite his eccentricities, he's still a viable leader (Coming from the most stoic member, it would've been a major compliment), and he could have seen Kotaro's resolution in saving the planet and accepted him as a Kyuranger.

I liked the possession parts of the episode. Gave decent story and comedy. Also, we now know why there are 2 Koguma Kyutama. LOVE IT!!! Also, Mothma was hilarious.

And this DEFINITELY should have been a Stinger episode |
The possession thing gave me Den-O flashbacks :lol
Episode was okay, but I agree with what was pointed out before, Stinger could've had Lucky's spot in this episode and it would'Ve been much better. The kid Ranger is okay I guess, he's not as obnoxious as some of the other Kyurangers and his fighting style is fun. Next week is some Lucky torturing apparently and I'm very much okay with that. |

While I don't dislike Lucky, I do agree that Stinger would of been a far better choice in this episode considering his already establish relationship with Kotaro and Shou. Although from what I've read about next episode, there's is going to be some conflict between Stinger and Kotaro about latter becoming a Kyuranger.
Speaking of which, his debut as Koguma Skyblue was pretty good. Definitely not as extravagant as Ryu Commander last episode but he did show off the aspects that separates him from the other Kyurangers. I also like Big Bear and his whole doubt over Shou as commander which makes a lot of sense. It does make me wonder just how long Shou has been in command before he found the Kyurangers. |

Anyway, I actually more or less like Lucky and while him backing up Captain Dumplings is very in line with his whole personality trait of always wanting to see the best in people, I'm inclined to agree this episode would've been way better if you swapped him out with Stinger. It's super easy, too. They deliberately put the token mecha fight at the start specifically so they didn't have to have one at the end, meaning the usual excuse for him needing to be around is gone. The structure of the plot is already set up for this. Just have Stinger be the one to offer Kotarou a lift back to Earth and you're done. It could've been another really great episode of Kyuranger right after a really great one, but as it is, it was mostly just average. Next week might make up for it, though. Now for some minor points: - The よっしゃ ラッキー! count for this episode is 4. I'm pretty sure last week's was too. The guy really can't keep the words out of his mouth, can he? I soooo can not wait for the compilation videos once the show is over. They're going to be like forty minutes long. :lol - What purpose did swapping out the limbs on Kyuren-Oh serve at the start? Does it need to be in the "default" configuration to use the attack Kyutama or something? Considering how unique a gimmick it is, I really wish Kyuren-Oh's various forms were more well-defined. It never seems to make much of a difference who's in what position. - That being said, I dig seeing Lucky cruising around in his Voyager. I always like it when individual components of Sentai robots get to do stuff and Kyuranger is doing more of that than usual. It's like Kamen Riders who actually ride their bikes. Even if it's for something as mundane as just driving to a place, it's cool to me. - Hey, next week is going to have an unlucky Lucky! That's quicker than I expected, and it doesn't seem to be the focus of the episode, but this could still be the first big step in making him into the truly great character I know he can be. Or they'll just play it purely for comedy and it'll be a completely inconsequential B-plot. I really don't know with this show sometimes. Guess I'll just have to test my luck. :p Speaking of which, does that one just not bother anybody or is the whole "yossha rakki~!" bit just so obnoxious nobody even noticed Lucky has had two catchphrases this entire time? I'm genuinely curious here. I don't think I've ever seen anyone bring it up. |
Unlucky Lucky is going to be comedic A-plot. Stinger wanting Kotaro to leave is going to be the interesting B-plot.
And no, 1 episode where they subvert Lucky's luck powers does not a good character make. Unless it has permanent ramifications and he has to actually be a good team player from that point on. If they do that, then Kyuranger would totally have my respect. But I already know they're not :p As for Lucky having 2 catchphrases, only one of them hits you like a freight truck because it doesn't fit into the dialogue at all. |
Well this episode was not that good. I do like Kotaro and he doesn't seem like he will be that annoying. Xiao got me to chuckle which is amazing with the humor I seen so far with this show. As for the end of this episode and the preview for the next it made me sad when they mentioned Argo. There is the chance they will destroy my imaginary Kyuranger mecha. :cry

Breaking his routine for even an episode is a good start. The lack of Kyuren-Oh in the preview even suggests the episode will come down to Xiao, Kotarou, and Stinger basically saving the day themselves while Lucky probably falls into a well or something. Besides, look on the bright side! You'll get to see Lucky miserably fail at everything he tries for 22 minutes. That should at least be cathartic for you, right? :p |
It'll be cathartic until he drops the "Yosha UnLucky!" bomb every time he slips up :lol

^ That's why I will continue to say that next Sentai should be an all dragon motif.
Yeah, this should have been Stinger for this episode, but then it would really have hit all the troupes, which might not have made it so satisfying. Besides, the idea that the MOTW kept coming up in all the right places just makes for good bad comedy timing. I'm done...so very done...complaining about the catchphrases. At this point what really grinds my gears is when they say "Okyu". Because that's not proper grammar. I like Kotaro, they picked a good actor for the role. And I've always liked the concept of kids having the power to do good. And when the next anniversary arrives, we can all scream at Toei to cast him as an adult Sentai member. My only other fault is that at this point it's a little Oprah. You get a Kyu Globe! And you get a Kyu Globe! It's not terrible, but terribly formulaic. |

I guess they can try a To Be Continued format mini arc to all split the members up, so each member can shine instead of the random motw format. Btw I don't think they'll use a human as the next member. |
The problem is that a side mission doesn't really solve anything. Yeah, we see the other rangers being active, but it doesn't change the fact that the story we're following is Lucky derping around in the foreground.
Yeah, Champ, Balance, and Naga going on the search for the Pyxis Kyutama was funny, but it had barely any time devoted to it and it was mostly just for comedy. |
It was just okay. I like the SkyBlue costume. It looks so cool. But the episode bored me. The addition of the new ranger could've been better.
Xiao was funny this episode again. At least, there's that. And Naaga's smile-practice mishaps was hilarious too. |
