Uchu Sentai KyuRanger Episode 12- "The Eleven Ultimate AllStars!" Discussion
The Puppis KyuTama has been stolen by Jark Matter, and Lucky is still without his signature luck. Can he overcome this handicap & win the day after all?
As always you can view this episode via live stream on Saturday by heading over to Taima TV. They play other miscellaneous programs up until the live broadcast starts. Live Streams of the Superhero Time block start at 5:30 PM Eastern Standard Time on Saturdays. |
I haven't seen Kyuranger in a while, but I caught the ed in the livestream while waiting for Ex-Aid and I noticed they don't do pelvic thrusts anymore. When did they change that?
Not as funny anymore, though I guess it makes sense now that one of the rangers is an actual child. |
Spoiler: This episode's "Yossha Lucky" count is off the roof.
|
Another great red focus ep.
Lucky's planet is close to Luth, and he escaped their via pod. All 11 Rangers together for a tactical purpose is just cool. Also Lucky spammed Gemini which clone over 100 of him to destroy the villain ability. RyuteiKyurenOh lame nothing special just a mecha with a fat backpack boring. Next ep orange and black work together and Scorpio shit is gonna get real. |

Ryutei KyurenOh is thoroughly disappointing.
Much like this series. They didn't even try to make it look like RyuteiOh was attached to the back. Jeez...And I thought Super LiveRobo's combination sequence was phoned in. Episode itself was...Mediocre. Obviously Lucky's luck comes from his enthusiasm (I think I called it, but, like I said, it was obvious). I still don't care for his backstory because it's not pertinent to the situation. Garu was kind of right. He loses one fight and goes full on PTSD? If this series was deeper, it would be something worth noting (Having a full meltdown once something doesn't go your way? A better show could have that be a full character arc. I'm doubtful this show would bring that up again). As for the backstory itself, meh. It's nothing special. I'm sure it'll be expanded on. Let's get into some things I did like. The use of Gemini was fun. It was also a fucking nightmare, but I liked the idea. I liked that Ikagen wasn't beaten in a one on one duel with Lucky. I liked that it took all 11 rangers (I also liked him lampshading that 11 on 1 isn't exactly a fair fight :lol) I also liked the bit of a twist that all the suckers were eyes, and not just the big obvious crystals. Was neat. Anyway, I hate Lucky. Just because you're giving the character depth doesn't mean I'll automatically like him. You gotta make him likable, too. Anyway, it seems we're trading out one interesting villain for another, so that's good, at least. |
After seeing this Episode......I officially have ZERO interest in Lucky, and now think that unless they do some HUGE drastic changes to his characterization, he's officially one of the worst Red Sentai Rangers we've had.
This was the ONE CHANCE the writers had to finally flesh out this character, the ONE CHANCE they had to actually justify this character's insane Deus Ex Luck.....and they DON'T. Instead, they just give us this vague-as-heck backstory of Lucky being abandoned as a kid & being an orphan growing up in the Leo Constellation Galaxy?! And NO, I don't buy his huge sadness of that moment to where he'd be THAT depressed about it, because it's very likely that right afterwards he apparently started going on his lucky streaks. I don't AT ALL buy him getting all super-depressed over just losing out this ONE TIME. Garu scolding Lucky just made me like Garu more & Lucky less. I mean, he was already likable, but GEEZ, they're making this guy run circles around their lead protagonist! The LEAST they could've done with Lucky's backstory was to maybe explain that he was given his Super-Dumb Luck as an actual ability by someone or something, and that ever since then, he's had a superiority complex with himself that in his eyes he can do no wrong. Then, use this loss as a moment of character development to where he can actually accept losses, and he won't always rely on his Super-Dumb Luck ability, but rather use his own power. OH, AND TO TOP IT ALL OFF, THE WORST "YOSSHA LUCKY" WE'VE HAD THUS FAR IN THE ENTIRE SHOW...!!! HORRIBLE Episode, and HORRIBLE Red Ranger. |
It may be the worst red ranger by our standards but its what the kids want. Also, the whole being positive to bring oneself luck isn't all that absurd. It's a common practice in Wicca that if one keeps a positive vibe about them then positive things will happen. Same goes for negative. And that's kind of what these episodes have been about. And finally, anyone else notice that they finally changed the ending dance to include Kotaro and Xiao, as well as actually changed part of the dance itself?

Takatora's actor is back, so he might be able to make the show better along with Stinger. Btw I don't think Green Sai and Black Bison was meant to be in the show, but I guess they needed to sell more merch at the last second and come up with the gimmick of being the first sentai show to combine two humanoid robo together. |
The way some folks were complaining about this episode while watching the raw version, I thought I was in for the episode that would make me drop the show. But it turned out to be pretty enjoyable.
I'm disappointed that Ikagen is gone, but I'm interested in seeing what Scorpio brings to the table. Hopefully, it's more episodes with the inner workings of Jark Matter as the focus. There hasn't been one since Stinger joined the group. As for Lucky, I never really disliked him so I don't feel that bothered about this and the last episode being his focus episodes. However, I would like it very much if some of the others could get developed without him taking over some of their focus episodes. As far as his backstory goes, it's existence is at least somewhat necessary since Ikagen triggering him by calling him "unlucky" wouldn't have made much sense otherwise. It's not deep, but I don't exactly go looking for depth in toy commercials. Speaking of toys though, my god is RyuteiKyurenOh such a lazy design. It's such a shame that they followed up such a cool, if short, rainy mecha fight with that. |
Well I enjoyed Lucky this episode. Felt like more of a character, rather than a "Yossha Lucky" dispenser (with an admit-ably cool sword, so he at least had me want to see him in action regularly just for that).
But yeah, RyuteiKyurenOh was a disappointment. Also, I'm not that concerned with the missing Pelvic Thrust. The new motion is okay in it's place. |
Xiao's proving to be an excellent Ranger, in hindsight, probably the best of the show despite how great Naga is. I got my hopes up and thought Garu would get some development during this but Nope!
Infinite Luckys sounds like a personification of hell, but I like it, shows that Lucky does have genuinely good moments. I also like his new take on saying YOSHA LUCKY too. Hell, Lucky's growing on me in this episode surprisingly enough with his "You're not just fighting 11 Kyurangers" speech too. Though the last 'all team' All Star Crash looked better. I also like how RyuteiOh has Orange and SkyBlue, feels fitting. But yeah, Ryutei Kyuren Oh sucks Scorpio REALLY should change things up KYUTAMA DANCING DOESN'T DO ANY AIR HUMPS I'M NO LONGER WATCHING THE ED ANYMORE |
When the only question you ask yourself after watching this is why they changed the ending dance you know the episode did absolutely nothing for you.
And that's pretty much where I am right now to be honest. |
I really want to like this series. But all because of one ranger who gets, all the focus, I'm seriously beginning to lose my enthusiasm. It's such a shame considering this series had characters like Balance, Naga, Raptor 238 and Kureshima Takatora. And no, Licky's backstory doesn't redeem him at all.
Ryuusei Kyuuren-oh sucks. An infinite amount of Luckys sounds like a horrible idea, even if it ultimately ended up working. Next episode features Stinger, Scorpio and Champ which is nice. |
I replayed the portion where Garu punches Lucky way too many times man if someone could make a gif of that or Xiao gut punching Lucky I would be set.
edit: Xiao not Shou |
I think that one was OK, expected it to be much worse at first.
Lucky multiplying the gemini kyutama attack with the following choir of yosha ruckys was so cheesy that I kinda found it funny again. |

Anyone else remember the Star Trek TNG episode "The Loss" where Counselor Troi loses her only character trait, being empathic? I don't like that episode because I don't generally like Troi (unless her mother's in the episode) and all the episode did was make her whine the entire episode.
Kyuranger last week and this week is that episode, except worse because Kyuranger has nothing to fall back on. TNG at least had a neat sci-fi concept for the B plot and characters like Riker to give at least one really satisfying scene in the episode. Kyuranger has almost all 2-dimensional characters and no real strength to fall back on while Lucky is whiny about his Mary Sue powers. While I could tell that the scene where Garu punches Lucky was trying, it felt empty because Garu might as well not exist in most episodes. I feel that scene would've been better if Garu wasn't in it and Dumpling ripped Lucky a new one. Also, the lesson is undermined by the ending. I hate when shows do that. The only good thing I can say about this episode is the early mission they used to figure out the monster. It was smart, everyone followed orders, and there were no dumbass moments in that mission. AND IT'S THE FIRST TIME LUCKY ISN'T PRESENT. Intentional or not, that tells me the team works better without him. |
And Lucky is still the worst Ranger in this series. You can say what you want about Daigo or Takaharu, but they weren't this pathetic and weren't as annoying as Lucky after just one loss.
Oh boo hoo you lost once? You broke your lucky streak? Oh grow up you big baby! Did nobody teach you about moving on beyond your lose? Well I guess to him overcoming his 1 loss record was too much for him to handle! Oh, what's that? You have a sad backstory?! BIG DEAL! Every Ranger gets a sad backstory but guess what, they don't whine about it and they use it as their motivation to push their skills and powers to the limit! NOT brood away and get suicidal after one bad day! This was their chance, their one chance to redeem Lucky and make him someone we do care about and forgive him for all his idiotic quirks that we had to bear with, but it added nothing to help with this situation and made it worse. In other stuff to complain about, the new combination was lame and unimpressive. And they changed the dance as well... |

Ryutei KyurenOh.....I mean...what the heck is it doing behind the other mecha? Seriously, where...where is that linkage going? I don't want to know where it's shoving it's globes. Also, I would be dead from alcohol poisoning from the Yossha Lucky in this episode alone. And now I can go back to not caring about why he screams it every time. That's called Tourettes, not being lucky. Next week, less caring about Stinger. |

Hammy did, therefore RIP |
Ryutei Kyuren Oh, wow I do not like that name. Though this does make me look forward to the BOA version where the zord buider pegs should help fix it. Also something must be wrong with my mind because when Garu said won me over to Lucky, I got this weird thought for a GaruxLucky yaoi. It is bad when you make Takahara good.

11 rangers was pretty cool to see. There goes Kyoryuger's record. It sucks how the new combination leaves out Gold, Silver, and Pink like that. It's pretty lame.
Did anyone else notice that they changed the dance!? They got rid of the air humps! |

Wow, I'm shocked to see so many people still so *meh* at best on this show. This was one of the most stellar (does that count as a pun?) episodes of Sentai I've seen in a long while. A lot of people have had some valid concerns about Kyuranger's pacing and it indeed seems like when they just do actual two-parters things flow way better.
I seriously have like no complaints here and I'm actually a little shocked by just how much I did enjoy this. I've been giving Kyuranger a lot of credit so far and this whole episode felt like the show confirming that is actually IS as clever as I've been saying. I felt like everything came together super smoothly. Lucky mopes around like a jerk and gives up on fighting, but everyone else gets his butt back in gear. It shows that the other members of the team are important, gives some actual dimension to Lucky, and given the implication he hasn't had to deal with setbacks in a long while his angst seems sensible for the character, and deliberately irrational. Garu isn't the bad guy because he punches him in the face twice. He's the hero! I love how the guy primarily responsible for getting Lucky back on his feet is the one who was explicitly established in the very first episode as not only having the most respect for Lucky out of anyone, but also having faced way more serious disillusionment. It added a ton of weight to the scene that wouldn't have been there if it were just like, Spada or somebody telling him to get over himself, and was even nicer since Garu has been pretty out of focus since said premiere. This really felt like a deliberate attempt to fix Lucky's character and I felt it worked extremely well. From little niggles like him not knowing about Jark Matter with the implications of his whole upbringing, to the really big things like adding weight to his stupid catchphrases by turning them into deliberate acts of defiance in the face of an oppressive evil trying to crush all happiness in the universe, which is something I really adore since it fits the whole theme of optimism the show has. He even uses his brain to come up with a plan to defeat the bad guy rather than some cop-out power up or something. It's just... If Lucky goes right back to square one for the rest of the series I'll buy the hatred, but it feels like some of you are being excessively negative towards him and Kyuranger in general sometimes. I hope that doesn't come off sounding too spiteful or anything, you probably don't need me to tell you your opinions are as valid as mine, but I genuinely feel there's a lot more to like in this show than there is to hate. |
