The 'Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers: The Movie' Appreciation thread
The film seems to get a lot of negativity but for me it was one the defining cinema experiences of my childhood (along with the obligatory Disney films and Star Wars re-releases). What do you guys think?
I really like what they did with the suits, and Ivan Ooze was a great one-off villain. It was a shame that the majority of the film dealt with the rangers de-morphed, but even with dated CGI the megazord formation coupled with the 'more awesome than awesome' movie version of the theme gives me tingles. On a more nit-picky note, I like how they changed Tommy's morph call to "White Tiger" - the 'zord' on the end of his TV ones always bugged me. And at least THIS never happened... http://i.imgur.com/zaQkF.jpg |
I saw this in the theater and remember being somewhat disappointed with certain elements. I wrote a review for a fanzine back in the day (Kaiju Review) where I gave it a negative review. Since then I have mellowed quite a bit on it, and I actually enjoy watching the movie. It's a big screen adaption; as a kid I was annoyed that it wasn't a big screen version of the TV show. In retrospect, that would have been cool when I was 14 but it wouldn't have held up all that well.
I would like to watch it again, it's been years since I last saw it. I think I would very much enjoy it now. |
I went to it at the theaters. It wasn't bad. It also was far from good. Those awful muscle suits were just awful. They didn't do any kind of special morph for the movie. Ivan ooze was a horrible villain. All that said. This movie was a masterpiece next to the crap that was the 2nd PR movie.

I didn't see it in theatres, but I do still have my VHS somewhere. I agree that I don't think it was as bad as everyone says it was either. I watched the hell out of that movie too.

This might seem like a minor point, but I always liked those Tengu/Tenga Warrior things because they were so much more interesting to me than random putties.

The movie was really tied down with horrible production setbacks and changes. I think the movie was scrapped and re-written like 10 times before the studio finally said "STICK WITH A SCRIPT AND GO". So so so many changes happening during the production.
Sadly they went with a "Hollywood" version as opposed to an awesome version, and it really shows. People wanted to see awesome fight scenes, not special effects. Sadly, we got the second instead of the first. If they ever do decide to redo a Power Rangers movie, I hope they can capture what made the television show so popular in movie format. |
Power Rangers the Movie is still one my favorite movies. It's proof we can do Toku to, without using recycled Japanese footage. Though I know it'll never happen again. Not saying Japanese footage is bad, either. Just making the point. The reason though Turbo failed? It wasn't a movie, it was a pilot for the new season. They screwed the pooch.

I also have to say that the first PR movie was OK, but that cgi.. Wow.. Bad... |
The first PR movie...It was fun.
I can't quite call it good, but certainly remember enjoying it as a kid. I would've much preferred the Ninjazord to have been a guy in a suit like normal or the Turbo movie though... I remember when I was younger, my entire thoughts about the CGI were "The ape doesn't look like an ape at all! Why is the bear blue? etc" lol. |
