I can't seem to do it. Either the site says they're "invalid files" or they just show up as meaningless URL text in the post. What am I doing wrong here?

You have to use the image quote tags around the URL of the image, wherever you might be hosting the image from. They look like this:
[IMG] (insert link) [/IMG]

When you say invalid files are you trying to attach images to a post physically? You may be trying to attach a file type that isn't supported or an image exceeds the file size.

I'm not sure. I try putting the pics up on Photobucket but they aren't being received for some reason. Is the site malfunctioning?
