Question: Has there ever been any mecha in the Star Wars universe? Like mobile suits from Gundam or something like that? Always struck me as odd that all this other crazy stuff in the main movies happen (Planet destroying planets, massive space wars in outer atmospheres, e.t.c.) but no troopers in mechs flying around?

Movie watched. Now to catch up on the topic since I can accept spoilers heh.
I freaking loved it. |
I liked it I wish it took more risks, but I can understand why they played it safe. I was not expecting it to be basically Episode 4, but hey. Also, when Han died, one dude was like "I didn't expect that" and I almost said "Really? I was." as soon as Han started walking towards his son I was like "HE DED!!!" Interesting to see how he was the Obi-Wan of this movie. I really liked Fin, and Rey was cool. I was surprised that Fin was a red herring in all the marketing, and he was in the movie as well, though the more it went on the more clear it became that this was more Rey's story. I was kind of surprised that we only got 30 seconds of Luke at the end, also wow Phasma did nothing, disappointing, since Disney was pushing her super hard. I'm sure glad I didn't buy into the hype and order her Figuart. Poor Han, no matter the continuity, his son becomes evil, but at least Jacen never killed his father. People say that Ben was whiny, and I disagree. He was more angry than anything else. Yeah, he threw a tantrum everytime something didn't go his way, but I mean...not all sith need to be brooding serious dudes. He's a kid who's confused, and i think they captured it well. It was executed far better than Anakin. I can understand why people might have a problem, because it reminds them of Anakin, but Kylo/Ben I think does that character type right, and does it well. Yeah, I'm now looking forward to "The First Order Strikes Back".

BTW, was that Coruscant that was blown up?

So basically being a Senator in the Star Wars universe is like being a red shirt in Star Trek.
|
Let me preface this by saying I haven't seen Force Awakens yet, so I've skipped the previous posts in this topic. Anyways...
After re-watching the Star Wars special editions, the changes made aren't as bad as I remember. There are a few that really bugged me though, along with some I actually prefer. Changes I liked: - More close-up shots of the Sandcrawler. It makes the thing seem a bit more believable, and helps set the setting better.(ANH) - Anakin's ghost. It's not like the original guy did an excellent job portraying Vader or anything. All he had to do was stand there, so we may as well make it the actor known for the Anakin role.(ROTJ) Changes I don't necessarily like, but can deal with: - The snow yeti thing. It was more mysterious when you couldn't see it, but being able to see it adds a bit more context to the scene (ESB) - Sarlacc pit. There was a certain charm to a hole with teeth, but the tentacles at least make it look like an actual creature (ROTJ) - Most of the CGI monsters in Mos Eisley and the "Look sir, droids" scene. It makes everything seem more lively (ANH) - The added victory celebrations on Naboo and Coruscant. I understand why they did it, but it really wasn't all that necessary, was it? (ROTJ) Changes I don't like: - Jabba and Han's scene in the Falcon bay. I'm not against Jabba showing up, but the scene says all the exact things that Han's scene with Greedo did, and worse at that. Greedo's scene made Jabba seem more mysterious and dangerous, while the scene with Jabba makes him seem a bit more forgiving. It adds absolutely nothing, only detracts from the movie. (ANH) - Greedo shooting first. All the reasons for this have been explained elsewhere on the internet. I don't like them shooting at the same time either, but it's better than nothing. (ANH) - The monster that walks in front of the speeder immediately before the "These are not the droids you are looking for" scene. It blocks out a good 2 seconds of the screen and adds absolutely nothing to the movie. (ANH) Almost ruined the movie: - The CGI singing monsters in Jabba's palace. They're poorly designed, the CGI is bad, they're WAY too cheesy, and they ruin a scene that makes Jabba seem really mean. I almost want to try to open up the movie in Windows movie maker just to cut those out of the film, but unfortunately, it doesn't really work that way. (ROTJ) Any other changes are either negligible, I didn't notice, or I forgot to list. |
Maybe its because I'm acting myself but the replacement of Anakins old actor is still the thing that bugs me the most about the special editions.
|
So the Special Editions showed off the Wampa more and added CG tentacles to the Sarlacc Pit?

Even the parts that were it's own they just rushed. So R2-D2 just had the rest of the map to where Luke was and wouldn't wake up, even though he was safely in Resistance hands till that little piece was secured? He could have at least shown them that part of of the map, so they could send some forces to search their undercover, since apparently the First Order has apparently the same 90% map according to Ben, and you can be sure the sequel will have First Order forces playing a guessing game and scouring any planet in the area for Luke. Instead we just have Rey rush to him quickly, no problem, and movie ends with them sharing an awkward glance. Part of the reason everyone and their mother kept hating prequel Anakin was because he whined like a child. Ben does the exact same, but he gets a pass. I don't disagree with people's view of Anakin, there's no denying that, but how is Kylo Ren anything other than a whiny fanboy of his Grandpa's bad half? Not all Sith are brooding, Dooku had a dignified way of handling himself, and Maul was just intimidating. Ren is basically everything people hated about the ruined Vader image, but now they're accepting it. Why, because he can stop a beam in mid-motion? That's cool, but it doesn't save his character. When he's holding Rey hostage he actually tries that nonsense Anakin was spouting on the Mustafar after slaughtering all those jedi: rationalizing his side as the good guys. Anakin tires to sound like some sort of justified person after killing little kids, and Ren calls the Resistance murderers after vaporizing 5 whole planets. If anything, Ren comes off worse. |

At least in A New Hope we had the lie that Vader and Anakin were separate people, so when you first saw Vader he was just a walking dark scary knight, and his backstory wasn't muddled with the question of "why is he this way?" Ben was raised by at least 3 people who had no reason to not make it clear that "Grandpa kind became an asshole, and we have a responsibility to have not another person from this family become a planet destroying douche", but somehow he ended up a 5 planet destroying douche. At least give a real hint as to why he's like this way, beyond the fact that Snoke got to him (somehow, vaguely that they're saving for a sequel), which just implies that Luke is a shit uncle and by doing so you're throwing your old protagonist under the bus so that Rey and Finn can take the spotlight. |
SOOOOO MUCH BLACKED OUT TEXT!!!! :lol

As for R2-D2, I don't know why he didn't...I'd have to watch it again. As for Rey, I mean, she DID have the map, so why wouldn't she rush to find him? As for the last shot, yeah, the helicopter shot was kinda dumb. |
Did anyone catch that Simon Pegg was the junk dealer dude?
As for Kylo , people didn't complain about Anakin's whining because he whined. They complained about him because of his stilted acting and horrid script reading. The dude was reading a script, he was not acting. Kylo's actor is actually performing. |
Oscar Isaac is just one of the coolest dudes acting right now.

I freaking loved Episode VII, I've been meaning to mention it since I saw it Thursday. I think it's my favorite Star Wars movie, then probably the prequels. Kylo Ren was my favorite character from it, he was fantastic. Also loved Rey, Finn, Poe, Han and the others. I actually liked the characters a lot in this. I mean it gave me new respect for Han too. Well I can't wait for the next one.

How does 7 start and end? I doubt it changed from how the last 6 did, but does it still do the classic text crawl over the iconic theme song ending with something happening in space kick starting the plot and the ending theme has the iconic ending theme and blue credits?
Also does the lack of the bombastic 20th Century Fox credit kill some of the initial excitement (if only slightly) or was the music for that actually something exclusively for Star Wars and now it's redone to be seen over, like, Disneyland Castle or something? |

Well...
Anyone else notice how Kylo smacked his chest and we saw what looked to be a blood in the snow? I doubt it was Han's blood because lightsabers instantly cauterize. Knowing the Dark Side, I presume that he had a sharp spike under his clothes aimed into his side that he beats to cause pain and misery so he can draw power from it. Anyone else think that? |
Looks like Yokai Watch beat Star Wars this weekend in Japan
http://kotaku.com/star-wars-the-forc...ium=Socialflow Star Wars has a big fanbase in Japan and one of the very few Western franchises that are big over there. |

Then again, blaster shots cauterize too. |

And since Hamster-san response was a bit muddled, yes, the the opening and the ending are still the same. ------------------------------------ Saw the movie yesterday, and it was EPIC. Some Trivia: *The New Order Stormtroopers are much better solders then the Empire's ones. Hell, they even are equipped to counter lightsabers! (Electrostaves. Rember the MagnaGuards?) *Kylo Ren's Crossguard Lightsaber is unstable. I don't know what that means. *Was Chewie's Bowcaster always that powerful? *The First Order are basically SPACE NAZIS. The Supreme Leader is an alien called Snoke. And Darth Sidous is permently dead. *Admiral Akbar is still alive. *The reason they didn't reactivate R2 is because he was in low power mode or something. They weren't going to take the risk of reactivating him and finding out his memory banks were wiped. Also, he only had 90% of the map, like the First Order. BB-8 had the last part, and the part of the map which had the planet that Luke was hiding on. |

I fucking loved this movie. Sure it did have flaws, but at the end of the day, I didn't care, it was well made. The prequels were just so bad and this with some of the cartoon shows made up for it. I'm really excited to see what happens next in 8 and 9 and just learning more and possibly clearing details up for those who don't follow the new EU canon.

@Den-O - Sadly the image is big, but when I pull it up, it's still quite skinny and small. So I can't read it.
|
I found this amusing. It is from a Simpsons's episode back in 2009.

Finally saw the movie and while it felt kind of incomplete and some parts were poorly written, overall I liked it. It combines my favorite aspects of both trilogies, and introduced possibly my favorite character in the entire SW universe (Kylo Ren)
