So i finally got around to seeing this and all i can say is....wow.Everything just fits perfectly. I can see alot of comparisons to den-o. Thats not to say its a bad thing, ive seen and enjoyed the first 10 eps of den-o and was happy to get the same feeling from this. The only real bummer was the ending being kinda boring.
|
I hate to say it, but after rewatching the first episode for a third time (second time subbed) I am about ready to just throw my arms up in the air and say, "I quit," already. It just isn't doing anything for me at all. Sure, I'm not going to do it, as I have said I will give it five episodes, but this show just isn't for me.
|
ToQger doesn't strike me as the sort of show you can based on one episode. Granted, you can't really do that for any show, but with Sentai you can typically divide openers into two categories - shows that give you a balanced introduction to the story and shows that try to get all the toy introductions out of the way. This first episode definitely seems like the latter, with hints of story spread throughout. I think there's enough in there that should create some appeal if you can get through the mood the show presents.
Since it is a Kobayashi penned show, there should be a decent idea of what this show wants to do by the fifth episode. |

OOOs, Attack on Titan, PGSM, Ryuki... all start slow and take a while to reveal what they're really gonna be like. |
Don't forget Shinkenger. Foreshadowing about Takeru began at around ep 6 or something and the explanation came around 45 or so?

I dunno, I felt it wasn't until like midway through when OOO really revealed what it was all about - and when watching a show weekly that may very well be too late if you aren't feeling that first half, I was lucky I could watch half of OOO in like three days. And I personally felt Attack on Titan was a massive directionless mess.

I was just saying it specifically as a counter to Shinkenger because I dropped it halfway through out of boredom. |

I definitely hope ToQger is a lot more interesting. Oh god, Genta. He was one of my least favorite 6ths in either franchise, PR or Sentai... |

I finished Shinkenger once, because of Juuzo, and have wanted to watch the show again but every time I remember the middle section I just immediately recoil in horror. Maybe someone could do a revised episode list like Kamen Rider Lucha did for Kyoryuger? He really made Kyoryuger enjoyable for me but condensing it to a greatest hits album. But honestly I just want ToQger at this point to be bearable, it doesn't even have to be good. When I was watching Kyoryuger without the hindsight to know when filler was coming so I could skip it, I found the show unbearable by the tenth episode. So if I can still tolerate this by the twenties it'll be a success for me, even if it is awful. |
It'd be pretty interesting to see Shinken with all the BS cut out :lol
For ToQger, I want it to be interesting over anything else. I'd much rather a show try something new and fail, like GoBus, over a show stick to routine and take no risks at all, like Kyoryu. |

I wish someone would curate every Sentai series for me. Because there will be, without fail, at least 20 episodes that actively detract from enjoying a series. If I had more time on my hands, I'd start a blog that indicated which episodes of which series are skippable (i.e., bad filler episodes that neither illuminate the plot nor the characters). Unfortunately, the reason I want these lists are because I don't even have time to watch full Sentai series these days. :lol EDIT: If anyone's reading this and wants to curate Maskman or Megaranger for me, I'd be grateful forever!!! :) |
Shinkenger is one of my absolute least favorite sentai ever. I will likely never watch it again. Takeru is a cardboard cut out of a person and Genta is the most obnoxious joke of a 6th ever. Those two things alone make me detest the show. I could list things all day I hated about Shinkenger. A lack of energy being one, something which ToQger has in spades.
|
I actually liked Shinkenger more often than I didn't, but getting Genta and then getting a twenty episode slog of boring pointless filler, is like a steel toe cap to the balls followed by a ball of phlegm in the eye. It's a shame because the ending is pretty good, and during that slog is where most of the focus is on Juuzo in the series and he's like the main reason to watch Shinkenger in my opinion.

So even if ToQger isn't really all that good, even if it isn't added to my favourites, if I'm still tuning in five months down the line, it's been a success for me. |

On a more bemusing note. I'm 90% certain I know where they got the inspiration for Shinken Gold's outfit... I'm a Las Vegas native. This is our bus: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi..._2010_9956.jpg This is Shiken Gold. lololololol http://static2.wikia.nocookie.net/__...old_ranger.jpg |
^ Haha that is brilliant.
|
I don't remember Genta being all that bad, but maybe it's because I skipped the middle 20 eps.
I sure do love the ShinkenGold design and suit actor, though. |
Jiro Okamoto was an interesting choice for ShinkenGold in suit. He started out just fine, but the guy has always had a bit of a belly. Athletic as heck, but I think that's the natural shape of his body. As the series moves on you start to see it appear more and more. He's much better suited for Rider or armored roles than anything that shows off the shape of his body as clearly as a Sentai suit does.
Anywho. I think the biggest problem with Genta is that nasty clash his character brings not just with the tone of the others but with the tone of the show in general. It's like someone at Toei decided that they can't have a Sentai show these days without an extremely over the top character. We already had Ryunosuke filling some of that role but the guy could at least play it serious when the situation called for it. Genta's actor, bless him, just isn't very good. And in a show like Shinkenger where the casting is better than most Sentai, he sticks out like a sore thumb. |
Oh man between how awful Genta was I totally forgot about his chubby belly haha. It was especially weird as Genta was like anorexic levels of skinny.

I loved it.
I loved how they could change they're suit colors and i especially loved the theme music, it really put me in a good mood. :D http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NaSd2d5rwPE |
Oh man, I thought I was going to hate this one because of the simpler designs.
I was wrong. I am in love with this crazy little season already. My only hope is that we see those Gabutyra train and Den-O liner become real things in another Kamen Rider/Super Sentai crossover movie. Maybe the Gabutyra Train could be in Toqger vs Kyoryuger along with arm and leg pieces based on the Travellion and Grand Liner? |
I love it. The show was very colorful and the main characters are very enjoyable. The Yellow Ranger is my favorite, but that could be that I find her very cute looking :D.
|
Finally saw this episode. It was alright, the villians were alright. The backstory for the Toqgers seems like a good idea, but I don't see how far it will go. The IMAGINATION thing, I don't think I will like much, the way they act like its the only way to win. Yes it is a kids show, but this seems to crazy :lol
Oh and Red seems even more hyper than Daigo, how is that possible? :lol |
I was never able to get into Kyoryuger because of how the introduced the rangers one at a time but this time around they're all there from the get go and all of them are fun to be around especially Right, Toq Ichigo.
Oh sweet hippity hoppity chirst! THANK YOU FOR RIGHT! This, yes this is the type of Red Ranger that I love. Optimistic, energetic and the type of person to dive head first into action despite the odds being against him. He's the type of leader I want to watch. Not the likes of Daigo or Takeru who become the center of attention but the one that demands no attention and allows the rest of his team to get the attention they deserve. Toqger is looking to be a fun sentai with a lot of heart and I look forward to seeing more from the power of imagination! GO FOR IT! GO! GO! GO! and don't be late! :D |

I tried watching this.
It was utterly awful. The characters are so obnoxious, there's so many annoying voices, and the bounciness and overbearing comedy KILLS it. Everything feels so hydrogenized, typical anime. The OH-SO ALOOF red ranger who's first impression is him doing something ridiculous like sleeping in that typical silly position on a nightmare train, or the other ToQgers first showing up by bumbling off the train. Also, man Pink looks ridiculous. She looks like a thirty-something trying to desperately pass herself off as "cute" in the most throw-up-in-your-mouth way. It feels like Den-O except without the cool suit or Momotaros, and the comedy is poorly-timed and badly written. They even did the "trains fly through the sky because oh shit we remembered this is an action show and trains can't actually do anything besides go forwards and backwards on a track" thing that quite clearly shows the inherant problem with their motif. "Imagination" is also really dumb. This show seems like it's made for toddlers. |

One day they'll make a Sentai that's for me, and I can finally get into this franchise. |
