Ex-Aid’s temporary website is now open and it reveals the staff.

The script will be written by Yuya Takahashi (Lupin III Italian Game TV Special, Kindaichi 2014, Angel Heart 2015, 8-Ranger, etc…).

The Chief Producer will be Motoi Sasaki (Go-Onger -> Zyuohger, Kamen Rider Wizard -> Ghost) assisted by Takahito Oomori (Boukenger -> Kyoryuger, Kamen Rider Den-O, Decade, Drive) and Ayumi Kanno.

The series will be directed by Shojiro Nakazawa (Timeranger -> Zyuohger, Kamen Rider Kiva, Wizard, Gaim).

They mainly come from Sentai, then. The staff also promises that they will go all out with the video game theme with the sound, the life bars, etc…

So, Sasaki is the TV Asahi producer, they tend to be pretty hands off with the show. The Toei producers are the people you want to look at.

Ohmori has only been the head producer on Kamen Rider Drive and Kyoryuger in the past. Nakazawa was the director on Gekiranger, Shinkenger, Gokaiger, Wizard, ToQger, and Ninninger.

Also, Yuya Takahash is a huge win for Kamen Rider. Lupin III Part 4 was a pretty big hit and to have someone with that sort of pedigree on Rider can only be a good sign

Clarification: The writer's name is YUUYA Takahashi not YUYA Takahashi. Yuya is an animated or a hair stylist. All the news posts dropped the 2nd "u" making it hard to find his credits.

Not particularly familiar with most of these people who will be working on it, but it sounds like they are pretty well regarded and I'm always curious to see some fresh blood for the head writer!

If nothing else, I'm just super happy the head writer isn't Riku Sanjo.

And I am ecstatic that it continues the 2010s pattern of not employing Toshiki Inoue.

Every instance of the English spelling on Japanese sites uses "Yuya". On his website (here) and on Twitter, he uses "Yuya" as the English rendering. Not sure why ANN lists it like that.

Yeah he's probably off of Kamen Rider for a while. He said he wanted to take a break from TV writing to get back into manga.

Also, something weird I noticed in the Ghost credits. Sasaki is goes from being credited as "producer" with Takahashi to "chief producer", a title he retains for Ex-Aid. A second TV Asahi producer, Kanno Ayumi, is also added to the credits. It's a pretty strange development.

Lupin Part 4 was a pretty fun show, it's about the adventures of a band of thieves. That said, it's also aimed at adults more than anything and was pretty dark in its storytelling at times.

That's irrelevant tbh, because if Toei wants a specific kind of story, they'll force it on the writer. Also, wasn't Amazonz's writer involved with Den-O?

I'd been kind of expecting the production team to give me at least some reason for cyncism. I love being wrong! I wonder whether it'll follow the Ghost arc of starting awful, then getting significantly better for no apparent reason.

I really have no idea what to expect in terms of quality, and I'm actually comfortable with that.

It is, but it doesn't capture the whole picture. Like, it's definitely true that Toei will force them to do whatever but Kobayashi has her own set of unique writing quirks that appear in most of her writing, regardless of the tone. Many writers (not just toku or TV writers) have specific things they do if they write without a conscious effort to change their go-to ideas.

I hope tomorrow will be press conference of Ex-Aid because it's doesn't make sense if they revealed the staff of Ex-Aid on today but don't have a press conference tomorrow.

Ghost's press conference was on August 18th of last year. It didn't have the sort of reveal Ex-Aid had, so it's difficult to say when this year's will be.

Obviously that was a bit of a simplification, but I was more talking about the general, "light or dark" tone of a show. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'd imagine that gets decided pretty early on in the process.

I'm a pretty big Kobayashi fan, so it's easy for me to see the common DNA between shows as different as the one's she's written, but that's something you might not even notice if you don't actively think about it.

Whatever Ex-Aid is gonna be like is what it's gonna be like, regardless of the writer. I'm getting more and more excited for it with every bit of news though, and despite all the stuff I just said, I'm happy to see Toei not just bringing in old writers for all their shows every year.

Ex-Aid sounds great to me with the production team, the story stuff, and the special effects.

I'm not entirely sure myself. Takebe mentioned that the multi Rider toy line was already decided by the time she was given Gaim but she wanted to have them fight each other. I think there's a collaborative effort between the director and producer and then they hire the best writer for the job. Takebe asked Urobuchi to write because she thought he could best pull off a Rider war type series.

It's kinda hard to figure out why Takahashi was picked up for writer. The guy's credits include a lot of legal shows that involve brilliant or "perfect" characters who suffer from a major character flaw they have to overcome. At the same time, Lupin was also really big and handled a moderate size cast on the wrong end of the law in a very interesting manner.

My best guess is he's good at handling shows with large casts and main characters with specific quirks. It seems like most of his shows, even the ones that aren't legal dramas, usually center around a character who has a trait that makes them more than just an average joe.

The head writer worked on Tiger and Bunny? Hell yeah, sign me up. The way they explain the effects reminds me of Scott Pilgrim, too.

Yeah mention Riku Sanjo has written Kamen Rider, Super Sentai and other children shows before when he already wrote ultra violent stuff before like MD Geist.

Thinking about the mention of health bars: If Lvl 2 Hp drops to zero he reverts back to lvl 1 and if that gets hit once Ex-Aid transforms back entirely.

That's feasible, and would explain why they appear to have made Level 1 a suit rather than having it be wholly CGI.

He's an interesting choice, for sure.

I'm usually hesitant when a person known for writing "mainstream" stuff tries his hand at niche genres. In this case, he's proven his nerd bonafides by spearheading the Lupin III revival... So color me intrigued, if nothing else.
