Isn't the pic 1 year old already ? The guy has been casted after it happened so I don't see why it would change now. Antoine Griezmann (football player) did a blackface few years ago, and he is still one of the most famous football player. He recently had another case with mocking japanese officials and Konami/Yugioh (recently appointed an ambassador of the game) cut contracts with him in return, but as a soccer player it didn't even affect him and can still play how he wants. Back to Revice topic, I'm liking the sound of the promotional episode. But I'm probably one of the few to not like the thing of one rider being 2 bodies or something (mostly in terms of writing). Not on the long term at least. Hope the story will make me be wrong. |

So Seiza Blaster is now a Kamen Rider. Interesting.

Revice’s first appearance has Kougami give them a birthday cake lmao

Do we have a confirmation on the writer? Or is the production staff mostly just rumours so far?

Glad that we look to be getting a fresh face for the writer. I was really hoping that would be the case over another returning guy. Or if it was someone returning it was someone who hadn't done a full series in a while.

Revi being compared to Spider-Man, in addition to the “Deal with the Devil” worries me greatly.
If ya know, ya know. |

Again, don't plan to watch this due to toku burnout (or at the very least not gonna bother following it weekly) but I can imagine Vice, the demon, being a Faustian character that whispers sinister suggestions to Revi outside and during combat.
Although I am not a fan of 'making a deal with the devil' stories, I do acknowledge the fact that it references the original Kamen Rider show using an 'evil powers to fight evil' motif (although I would argue demons have a more evil connotation compared to biomechanical powers); a fitting theme for the 50th anniversary of Kamen Rider. At this point I'm just here for the henshin sounds lol. |
You know it absolutely just hit me, but the whole drone pterodactyl thing with Vice or whatever that happens...
I think we found our way to get past like... our Kamen Rider not riding anything? Like if they need vehicle scenes then we can just have green screen of that happening. |
Oh they hired the racist guy again....
to voice a main character this time.... God dammit. _________________ A SERIOUS PSA For anyone who doesn't know Subaru Kimura has made posts mocking people's culture before, and also done full on black face I don't really wanna have a big argument about "what is considered appropriate in Japan" because I've already seen people make that argument today and it just has me in a grumpy mood. So I'll leave that topic at, even if one thinks this is somehow appropriate when done in Japan that obviously shouldn't make it morally okay to do on an individual moral level, racism can always harm others, it's bad to mock entire cultures and races... Even outside of all that, just from a business perspective this is smth toei should care about, they're trying to push rider in the west more than ever before, and this is 100% the type of decision that would get people to boycott their productions... ...Imagine if Revice is the first series they try to simul sub, the show will get a bunch of traction, then a lot of people will hear about this, and they'll be swarmed with letters and tweets about it, it just seems like a bad move from all perspectives Here's a source too, content warning: racism, blackface, self-disfigurment https://twitter.com/HoneySo4/status/...535163904?s=19 I do wanna stress I'm not judging anyone who's gonna watch the show anyways, its not like most people here watch the show in a way that would financially support this guy, you can watch the show and even enjoy it, no sweat off my back, I'm probabaly still going to watch it unless this man's presence just makes me too uncomfortable personally, but I don't have bad will against those who can separate the character from the actor I would like to politely ask everyone to please consider avoiding supporting this guy on social media or financially, if you think someone's behaviour is crappy you don't owe them your support even if you like a show they're in If you disagree with anything or even everything I've said feel free to tell me if you like, but like I said i don't feel like arguing so I might not respond, this is mostly just a PSA for anyone who cares |
I don't really care about what actors do or don't do.
The asthetics so far doesn't seem too appealing to me, so I'll give it a few episodes to see if it's worth keep watching it. |
Vice being a contracted demon who fights with Revi reminds me of Shin Megami Tensei. Might also have some OOO/Den-O vibes where the central plot is Revi and Vice growing closer together through their battles and Vice learning to appreciate humans.
And Vice is basically multiple vehicles? The bike and a paraglider? Maybe more? The Main Rider being into baths will probably offer up some nice fanservice for the ladies...unless he continually just does it in his Rider form. The villains are an institute that use demons like Vice? Quote:

Ikki my friend, why have you sold your soul to the devil?!
So basically Ryuki, if Dragreder was a Rider. Interesting concept. inb4 the Rider is a Sentai meme starts again, haha. The name Revice turns out to be a portmanteau of the two Primary Riders, Revi and Vice. So they're collectively known as Revice. Vice doesn't look much like a Rider, but hey, if Saikou and Lazer pass as Riders, then sure, why not! I'm glad to see a fresh new writer, the first of the Reiwa Era. Hopefully this Kinoshita guy can write an entertaining story about dinosaurs and devils. Man, these motifs are reminding me more and more of the upcoming Horizon Forbidden West which I'm very excited for. Quote:
Also, I think you should have added a self-disfigurement warning. Some people can be squeamish about that. |

Interesting that the known cast so far is having 2 member of the main protag's family that are not "old people" like an uncle/aunt or a grandpa. Igarashi Daiji and Igarashi Sakura. So I guess brother and sister of the protag.
funny enough their last name "Igarashi" is made with the kanjis for five, ten (okay I get it) and storm. Ikki (protag) is made with "one" and "brilliance" Daiji is made with "big" and "two" and Sakura is obviously the flower. I wonder if Daiji having 2 in his name is actually a sign of him being our second rider. There is 2 other character announced. George Karizaki and someone named Olteka/Orteka that sounds like a vilain general name. |
I've seen people say that because of Vice's VA that they're boycotting by not watching Revice or purchasing any items from it, but that's...not going to change anything at all. For multiple reasons.
Japan's more lax over this idiocy than places in the West. On-top of that, with how overboard Western fandoms and group get when it comes to instilling their own views and expectations onto JP professionals and groups when they're, yes I know, two different cultures has reached a point where most JP companies, creators, groups, etc. aren't gonna listen anyway. Why would you when all it does it blow things into cancel culture controversy? Even if something like this should be addressed. Secondly, western fans boycotting anything will literally have no effect on anything. If you don't watch, you're not effecting anything. We have to torrent and pirate these shows to watch them as they air, it's not like Toei gets revenue from that. As for not buying products, we don't even make up that much of a sales percentage as JP consumers do. And even then, not buying anything only ends up damaging the success of the franchise internationally anyway. So there's no winner there. I'm watching Revice for the characters, not the voice behind one of them. The best I can hope for is that Toei actually takes what backlash they do end up seeing to heart and swaps out VOs at some point. Easier than recasting an on-screen actor at least. |

Though I'm legit wondering where Japan draws the line for this serious cases. I still have in mind Tsunenori Aoki case (Sengoku Ryoma in Gaim, Aguri in GARO) when he assaulted a woman while being drunk (actually. twice...) and it resulted in his career going down to near extinction in an instant. Not saying he doesn't deserve it. But where do they draw the line. EDIT : unrelated to Toku, but same kind of event. Today an Olympic Games official (Kobayashi Kentaro) in japan was fired for a joke about the holocaust. and he made that joke in 1998. Japan isn't really consistent I guess. |
Just kind of a general response but in my mind the issue with the "they don't care about your support" argument I've seen a lot online today is that they're trying to make Rider more of an international brand (they've pretty much said it outright at this point https://variety.com/2021/film/global...235009716/amp/ ), with multiple official subs coming out or being announced especially to commemorate the 50th anniversary
Part of me was expecting Revice to finally be the first show to get a simul-sub, but now if that happens it's possible it will underperform in the west due to the casting and may give toei the impression Rider can't pull in big numbers in the west In the case of either an official online sub or official dvd/bluray release It also puts people in the awkward situation of having to decide if it's worth giving money to Subaru Kimura as a side effect of paying for the show to show toei they support the franchise, or to not support it because they don't want to support Subaru Kimura but subsequently risk toei thinking the franchise is doing badly with western fans Obviously all of that is theoretical, but it seems increasingly likely that toei's goal is to keep subbing Rider, and it feels like such a shame that a casting decision might hurt the odds of Rider succeeding here Like I said before tho I don't want to give the impression that I'd judge anyone for watching the show, but this is a very messy situation for toei if they really are trying to expand into western markets, this feels like potentially a huge misstep, I would have reservations about watching any official release of the show and I know others who feel the same way, and I'm currently not intending to buy any of the toys or merch, but again I'm not trying to speak for everyone, obviously everyone can make their own decisions with their money and actions Overall I guess what I'd like to see most is some sort of acknowledgment from the actor or from toei, for me personally I'd certainly like to see them swap the VO, but the odds of that seem pretty doubtful More specifically someone was asking earlier when this happened, I think it was like 3 years ago? I don't remember the exact timeline I think that's about all I have left to say about the subject? I mostly just wanted to vent my theory that this show could be simul subbed, and how this would affect this, and how in this scenario backlash western fans could affect the perceived success of the franchise in the west _______________ Oh also, Quote:

I understand that many people in Japan haven't quite caught up with race politics elsewhere, as evidenced by the black face scene with KR Beast in Wizard, and many other occurrences in Japanese media, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't hope they catch up. ALSO Subaru Kimura is half German, spent 7 adult years in Germany, and has likely travelled abroad a bit, I get the feeling he may have heard that blackface is bad at some point before he posted it online, but maybe I'm wrong. It would help if he took responsibility but it seems he hasn't. EDIT: I also agree that if TOEI is trying to make KR more international (and I agree it seems they are) then they REALLY need to rethink this. Its not something western audiences will take lightly. |
I didn’t know who that guy was...and now that I know I still don’t care.
I will try Revice but for the few things we know, I probably won’t like it, making it the second year I’ll skip a Rider in 10 years now... |

I'm willing to give it a peek purely based on a new-to-the-industry writer. Could be a dog's breakfast, of course, but it's definitely not "this person wrote Ghost and that turned out super-well so let's hire them again." |
Revice better be good.
Would Vice give you "Ankh vibes" by Seiza Blaster's voice? |

I wonder if they'll primarily use dual finishers and double Rider Kicks or if Revi will still get most of the Finishers. |
Can’t lie, this has got me so down. By far the most I’ve been excited for KR in a while and then it turns out the VA of one of the main leads who I’ll be hearing all the time is a horrible person. This fuckin sucks

I'm really curious about the family part. That's something we never really tackled as the main subject of a series right ? We had families before, and some of them at the center of the show (Den-O ? Ganmas in Ghost, etc...) but we never really had a show centered around a family and them doing stuff all together. I wonder if we could have a show about family members fighting together but also against each other (of course for the noble cause of protecting the other members), everyone making a pact with the devil but one is taking it to far or extreme to protect the family. |

This is not a good look for Toei if they are trying to make Kamen Rider more popular outside of Asia. |

Now even if the show is great in every other aspect his presence will just add the inescapable sense of discomfort for me, and I won't feel right personally buying any merch, it's really disheartening |

Like I said previously, there has been at LEAST 1 case of blackface within KR itself, in Wizard, when Beast walks out of an explosion or fire and suddenly is painted black and has an Afro. I didn't stop watching, but i won't stop talking about it when its relevant. There is an ongoing issue with race relations in japan that will only become more prevalent as their birthrate declines steeply and they become more of a melting pot in order to maintain their economy. This is not news, its been talked about for years, and as a cultural touchstone I think it is important that KR and Sentai take the lead on these issues. I am optimistic, as in Zero-One there were a few plot points that I believe were a commentary on Police Violence against marginalized groups, with the HumaGear filling the role of Real life marginalized groups. |
Man, this sucks… I was genuinely super excited for this season. Well, It’s not like I’m giving Toei money for this, so while this is still super bad and I’m not happy about it, at least… Actually I have no idea how to wrap this up.
|
Americans don't give Toei any money for watching Rider and recently pissed them off by flagrantly talking about fansubs @ official Twitter accounts.
Blackface is wrong. However it will literally never come up as the person is only voice acting. I also don't think a kids show that's primarily meant to sell kids toys is the platform to explain to average Japanese people why blackface is offensive. It's also wrong to lay blame to the franchise for an actors mistake that he did while he wasn't under any contract with the franchise. |
