I imagone story wise the control would come from Ray not wanting to lose his humanity

What I imagine is the opposite, that using the final form risks turning him to a monster, and the more time and power output he uses increases the chance of him turning into one (probably that the final form slowly fossilizes his body while he uses it)

I dunno who's gonna write the story but you can count on me on the really dark and f***ed up (more than NGE and Madoka) parts if there are any

Hey Yuu, I had an idea. Instead of drawing each form, why not just draw what changes? It'll save you time, energy, and resources.
