Actually, this is so absurd, it’s kind of funny. “Look, just air the episode and we will punish the writer.” Being a producer must be fun. |

I finally managed to watch the latest episode of Ultraman Arc today both in Japanese and in English. Still couldn’t believe that Blazar, the Ultraman season that was released just last year, is going to be on Blu-Ray in two days before Halloween complete with its own English dub and its post-series movie.

A fossil uncovered in an Ultra show? Definitely going to be related to a Kaiju!
The water flooding into the miniature set looked amazing. Does Chief Ban know about dinosaurs? Why, of course he does! Back in his youth he wasn't just uncovering artifacts with Professor Miyako but also part of a team of dinosaur lovers where he was associated with the color red and T-Rex's! They even had their own stroll! SKIP is really emphasizing what it means to be an investigative team, interviewing, researching, taking in info...they even have an investigation board! Though it sucks when your investigation doesn't turn up anything useful, but that's where Chief Ban steps in and motivates the team. Because if there's even a 1% chance that a Kaiju is involved, SKIP can't give up until they know for certain! In a world where Kaiju are real, everything you know about science and research is turned on it's head, so you have to keep an open mind and broaden your horizons...your imagination! Just like Yuma does as Ultraman Arc! I love how this case was solved because of Ishido's love of coffee and eating things that go with coffee. He even at the egg afterwards! You-Bot is like the perfect drone! Able to slip into environmental conditions normal humans couldn't and even give footage of an Ultraman fight! And I love the effect of his eyes when he's shocked. The Ultra Q theme when the monster eye opens up! Livvyjira, the Giant Cetacean Beast! What if a whale were fused with a piranha and had a giant bite and a face only a mother could love and a snout that would spew sodium chloride? So is the cube blinking mean Arc is telling Yuma they have to transform? Also, undersea transformation and Rise uppercut! I love how they transformed the miniature set into an underwater battlefield for Arc and Livvyjira, even if the latter has the home field advantage and is swimming circles around Arc. This week on "what is Arc going to do with his barrier?" we've got Arc fusing his barrier and Ultra Slash to create a fan to blow away what's covering Livvjiyra so he can stuff his snout with a tree, laugh at his expense, and deliver an Ultra Beam right into that big mouth of his! Doing a transformation underwater is cool and all until you're still wet when you transform back. But at least Chief Ban has rediscovered his love of fossils and his Wings of Imagination. Next week: an alien, Ishido playing bad cop, and the return of Shagong!? |
Episode 5 of Arc was a total Nishi package complete with Abaranger references. :lolol

Arc laughing at the monster :lol

Time for SKIP to deal with their first proper alien encounter!
Wow, when aliens are involved Ishido goes from a reasonable and chill coffee lover to Netflix Dan "the only good alien is a dead alien" Moroboshi. Undone by the alien hand signals... I can imagine Ishido has a bunch of alien horror stories. They do say 1 in every 5 aliens in an Ultra show is actually not trying to conquer Earth. Though he also seems like he's just looking for an excuse to shoot an alien. So Arc can trip up Yuma when he needs to do the "Yuma, look at this plot relevant thing" point. Alien Coro feels like if Alien Pegassa mated with a bird. Also, poor guys' buddies just ditched him. Was that anomaly related to K-Day? Shagong returns! And he's brought friends! Kind of early to be reusing Kaiju, but when you've got a great suit, best to make good use of it. So there's an economic downturn going on amidst all these Kaiju attacks!? Sometimes what matters more than anything is genuine human kindness and acceptance, complete with a running an inn montage. Also I wonder if Numa and the inn proprietress had a thing going beyond business. Oh snap, he brought back the barrier fan! And it actually finished off one of the Shagong's! Too bad there's more! Good thing Arc has the Solis Armor, which can also be channeled through Arc Eye Sword for a finisher. I didn't expect Numa to straight up try to kamikaze him, or for Arc to let the last Shagong go with a stern warning...but I guess there'd been enough death Plus, Numa survived! I never quite linked imagination and empathy together like that, but it makes sense. It really feels like Ishido is learning a lot from Yuma in this show. Next week: The first recap episode! |
Just finishing watching the latest episode of Arc and I think this just might be my favorite episode of the series so far.
|
After plenty of distractions for the past few weeks I have finally managed to finish Geed. Lovely series, but it could've used a better villain than bootleg Juggler.

Plus the locals standing up for the alien was super wholesome. Quote:
Plus, the final boss fight is among the most memorable for me. I will never stop thinking about this moment, it's so beautifully done. https://i.imgur.com/NxQVSWO.png Agreed about Geed being lovely, I like the show a lot. |
I forgot that this week's episode was a clip show. :(

Last we saw Yuma's parents it felt like his dad took up the bulk of the character focus, so it was nice to see his mom get some screentime and show the impact she had on Yuma, right down to inspiring Arc's second form.
Hoshimoto City is experiencing a heat wave and no where is that more felt than at SKIP with their broken AC! It's gotten so bad Ishido is using a highly advanced robot to make the perfect iced coffee! But admittedly, it IS rather refreshing. Poor Ban... Hot water bursting from the ground? Mysterious women who only an Ultra Host can hear? Must be a Kaiju! Oh, we're doing the transformation before it's even the midway point! I mean, that means Arc probably won't win, but still! Homger, the Scorching Kaiju! Always neat to see a quadrupedal Kaiju (even if those are always hard on the suit actors), though it's defintiely a pain for Arc to have to manage a beast that can not only spew fire and tank some hits but also absorb his energy. I'm really curious what the SKIP crew thought of Yuma in this episode. First he's hearing voices, then he's suddenly on the ground in pain, then he's out of it. Heatstroke? Hypothetically, if You-Bot is destroyed, does he have a backup head or copy of his programming/brain? Or if he's destroyed that's it and only leaves Pi-Bot? Homger sleeping is kind of adorable, aside from the fact that Homger is liable to blow up the entire city if left unchecked. Ms. Fairy, I understand that Homger doesn't mean any harm and needs to literally explode to birth her children...but you do realize she's going to blow up in a populated area and kill a bunch of people, right? I guess they just had bad luck that she ended up in the middle of a major city to give birth. And we needed the pre-requisite "not all Kaiju need to be destroyed, just understood" episode. Luna Armor! Arc now has a discus shield and a jetpack that makes him move at superfast speeds! Perfect for dodging Homger's attacks and creating a funnel so she can explode in peace! Cosmos would be proud. Well, Homger gave out her life to birth her child, which is both beautiful and tragic, and now there's the "Child of Homger" out there in the world. But hopefully future generations will know how to manage a Homger giving birth and not need Ultraman's help. Next week: Streamer Kanegon breaking the economy!? |
I love Homger's design. I thought the episode was well-written too. And is it just me or is the lady with glasses Miyuki Nishijima (Michi Nishijima circa 2003) who played Emiri/Abare Pink in episode 8's trailer?

Ultraman Max was... really something! It's kinda like Taro? Very slapsticky and silly overall, but has some serious moments. And I have to hand it to the show, it regularly had me laughing out loud. Like, the episode with the space cats that give everyone super forgetfulness? The one with the floating, sleepy monster? Hilarious! It also does well with surreal, meta episodes like the one about the scriptwriter for Ultraman Max or the one with the Ultra Q actors. But I do think the show just wasn't able to handle the more serious moments as well as I would have liked. This is a show with a huge amount of writers and directors doing whatever they felt like, so it doesn't really deliver on things like internal consistency or character arcs. Due to this, the more serious episodes mostly just fall back on old standards for the Ultra series that don't stand out much. Still, it was a nice tribute to the Ultra series and it had very charming miniatures. Not really a big favorite for me, but it made me smile!

Off-topic, supposedly, one of the scrapped Nexus base form designs was later used as a basis for designing Mebius. |
I started on watching Ultraman Cosmos yesterday and I am already liking what I see with the series so far.

Episode 8 of Arc is probably my next favorite episode since episode 2 of Blazar. :lolol
Two words that sum up this episode. Access. Flash. :lolol |
Even creatures like Kanegon have to get with the times...and the real money is made through streaming!
Hoshimoto City is facing an economic decline to the point where they need a digital currency app and a lot of conserving for businesses to get by...even SKIP has to conserve lighting, budget, YouPi, and is forcing government employees to turn to streaming to make enough in tips to drink more than three cups of coffee a day! The horror! I have to give "Alpha" and "Omega" this much, the face designs fit Ishido and Yuma to a T. Also if you deny Ishido his coffee, he goes nearly insane and willing to use top secret information to make money so he can get his coffee. Chief Ban has a daughter! Kanao is very enthusiastic and intense even if I only understood half of what she was saying most of the time. First Kanegon was a boy transformed into the embodiment of his greed, then he was an alien...and now he's a rogue AI designed to monitor and collect data on peoples' spending habits only they never taught the AI how to spend himself. So to save the Hoshimoto City economy, they need to teach Kanegon to spend, spend, spend!!! They used the Show Kanegon silhouette!!! Is this the first time an Ultra has gone fully digital? At least for a battle? And then Arc gets into a slap fight with Kanegon and spewing coins like he's Sonic the Hedgehog. YouPi finally gets to battle with Arc, at least in the digital world! Though he's not the most reliable ride when he straight up vanishes on you, huh? Oh snap, giant-size Kanegon!!! The discus on Luna Arm is surprisingly versatile, whether it be distracting Kanegon, serving up a plate of the spending programming, or going giant so Kanegon can get a big moutfhul! Do I even want to know how Kanegon got a physical form? Or how his tips seemingly transform streamers into Kanegon? Next week: High school Rin! Rin investigating one of her idols possibly turned criminal (there's a classic Ultra plot)! Also...Neronga! |

I am back! Time for some recap (just like last week's episode, more on that in a bit)!
Underwater Monster, always fun. Reminded me of the Gobul from Monster Hunter 3 (war flashbacks), and more of Arc's glorious imaginative uses of his powers. Plus a nice look at Captain Ban, which is always nice to see. Funny looking bird alien with an obsession for mushrooms that he modeled his spaceship just like one! Was a nice heartwarming episode (and a little detail that reminds me of my Manga I'm writing), alongside a fight with two Shagong, with Arc frightening one away. The Recap that showed us one of the other SKIP Branches. Honestly, if all the recaps featured a different branch that would be a neat series of recaps. Loved the duo in this one though, especially how the guy basically owns a Kaiju like a pet that he's proud of. Homgar was a neat tiger kaiju, even if a little warning about it blowing up to reproduce would have been appreciated, lady! But Luna Armor debuts and it's a pretty sweet form, love the look of it. This week, Ishido and Yuma become V-Tubers! I already love their goofy dynamic, heck, this whole episode was the kind of goofy I just plain adore. The amazing entry sequence to the digital world to the bonkers fight to give Kanegon (which I find hilarious he's a popular streamer. 10/10, would simp for) medicine, with You-Pi chipping in... Until his connection crashes. Overall, loved this episode and all its hijinks. Quote:

And the coins were an absolutely adorable detail. Next Episode! Famous Guy You Look Up To That Might Actually Be Evil? What could go wrong? |
This week's Arc was basically just an episode of Gridman and I'm totally ok with that! Probably my favourite episode so far.

I was planning on watching the post-show films first but I need to talk about Ultraman Mebius right now while riding the high of finishing it.
I loved that. I absolutely loved that show with my whole heart. Honestly, it was a show that had a lot of barriers to overcome. Being set in the Showa era timeline, which required rationalizing all its disparate elements into a cohesive setting? Not to mention both modernizing the storytelling while being respectful towards the original style? Not an easy task this 40th anniversary celebration had laid out before it, but succeed it did. The story had such passionate love for the source material. I wasn't even totally sold at first. Like, I was having fun, but sort of like Tiga this is a slow burn kind of show. At first I was just having fun with the combination of classic and new monsters. But as the show went on I found myself impressed by the dynamic of cooperation between GUYS and Mebius, which was unlike any other Ultra show. The deep sense of friendship that developed among the GUYS members, which was always delightful to watch. Legit, just watching everyone interact was enough to make me smile most of the time. And then it finally happened: an Ultra show where the main character is "out" as an Ultra to the rest of his team before the final stretch of the plot. The perfect show to finally introduce this concept in, which emphasizes humans truly fighting alongside Ultramen in every sense of the word. I absolutely loved all the cast members and will miss them. And the tribute episodes to past Ultra series? A sequel to the Return episode about the alien who was shot dead by fearful humans? A weird Leo training sequence provided by Gen Otori? Ultraman 80 class reunion somehow getting me all teary eyed?! Aaaaaaaah! Normal episodes were also constantly getting a rise out of me too because of how much I loved the cast. They ranged from personal (Marina traveling back to the summer where her Grandfather died) to the numerous episodes about the team's overall bond (I may have lost it when Ryu gave Mirai the Memory Display with the flame design matching his own). The miniatures are also awesome one again, following up from Max! I'm not going to say that every episode landed perfectly, but the show more than made up for it's shortcomings. During the final farewell? YEAH, I CRIED A BUNCH. Not because I was sad, but I was genuinely just overcome by the purity of the show's spirit. This... This is Ultraman right here. |
Episode 8 definitely is one Arc as a show can be proud of. If they ever do best of re-runs for Arc they need to show this.
|
I am now 30 episodes into Ultraman Cosmos on which I am already close to the show's halfway point.
|
Honestly, trigger's sixth episode; the one hour devil is where the first half peaked.
|
Finally caught up with Arc after missing the past few weeks. Some pretty good episodes, especially the last one! Series is going good so far.
|
What do you do when a rampaging, invisible, Neronga is on the loose? Lure it to some power liens via You-Bot and overload with electricity to knock it out! They didn't even need Arc!
I forget Yuma is supposed to be a Kaijuology expert. But he actually dished out some decent insight in this episode! Yamagami isn't the first "character connected to one of the main cast who is committing crimes involving Kaiju" but he's probably the most likeable one in a while. Even his motivation is surprisingly understandable, wanting to use their power to create a better world for children like his son, and he's not a bad person...but he just lost sight of the people who would be satisfied to sacrifice his mission. Though honestly I just feel bad for his wife and son. Just imagine his son having to grow up with his father being a criminal and being in prison for who knows how long when he's at such a young age. Kaho Mizutani can pull off a school uniform. Imagine sending Rin to suss out that her mentor and idol, the person who lead her to the point where she would build YouPi and join SKIP, is involved in illegal dealings. And that's not even getting into the fact that she had a massive crush on him. But considering he supported her and accepted her interests when her other friends in high school did it and he's a fairly attractive and nice guy, can you blame her? But she knew him so well that she remembered his tell when he lies. I thought Rin was going to just straight up tell him to turn himself in, not lead him to incriminate himself. But I guess that shows how serious she was about him paying for his crimes so he could be the man she admired again. You couldn't just mention his name and not expect him to appear. He sat out on Blazar because he was exhausted from filming Shin Ultraman, but he's back and more ferocious than ever. That's right, the King Kaiju of Reiwa has returned...I'm talking about PAGOS!!! I like how Arc saw the sun and knew to use his Solaris armor, especially for added sturdiness to take on two Kaiju. But it seems like he can't fly in the armor like he can in the base form/Luna Armor. Aw, Pagos and Neronga held each other before Arc cut them in two! Now I actually feel kind of bad. Dang, Rin basically confessed her love to Yamagami. But he lied about what the time they had together meant to break her heart for her own sake. I guess Rin's really grown up now. At least she's got YouPi! Next week: Yuma's old buddy and Noiseler! |
Boy, this was a great episode!
Now usually these kinds of plots have become something of a mainstay in Ultraman, but something about this one adds a little something that just hits different. The fact Yamagami isn't quite a "bad" guy, his reasoning is perfectly justifiable, even if it's still underhanded, but everything they show from him and Rin's time together just made this hit on a different level from the one Decker Episode, and I would say better. The fact that he lies just to her at the very end so that she can move on from him just made this episode for me, it's something that could have all been just fine with just a "he's beaten today but maybe he'll be redeemed next time" to something that hits harder. Anyway, it's always nice to see the "Attack Team" defeat a monster without Ultraman's aid, just as it's always fun to see a fight between monsters (and their defeat was rather cute). I also want to say, I have begun joining Yuma and YouPi in the aerobics section. And I am not ashamed. If anything, it's good workout. Next Episode: Radio Friends Communication! Is this E.T.? |
Communicating with aliens has long been a dream of humanity, but imagine you get into radio correspondence with an alien girl voiced by famous female seiyuu Ayane Sakura? You'd never want to give it up!
Though I feel like Kazuo is meant to represent your typical withdrawn, antisocial, hikikomori who reject normal people and society to a degree and seeks some kind of escape, which he finds in a pretty and kind voice he meets over the radio in Fio. Not that it devalues the connection he and Fio shared, just that it comes across as him chasing after a fantasy rather than reality. Ah yes, the classic "protagonist meets up with an old friend from school," only they aren't really friends...not for lack of trying on Yuma's part. Hey gang, it's Noiseler! With cool echolocation effects and sonic attacks just as deadly as they've always been! And he's always chasing after the noises! I had a feeling something would be up with Fio, but what a tragic backstory for a disembodied voice. Poor girl. I think an Ultraman show did a similar plot (Cosmos? Maybe Mebius?), but it still hits hard here. Thank you for the Kaiju warning system, Arc! Also just goes to show how out of touch Kazuo was of any reality that did not pertain to Fio that he completely ignored the giant battle happening outside his window. I love how they broke windows during Noiseler's scream. The SKIP team were not expecting Arc to literally be right next to them and agreeing with their reasoning about Noiseler's behavior. But okay! Did you miss Arc doing cool things with his barriers and Ultra Slash? Here's an Ultra Slash ping-pong with barriers! Hey, the GDF actually backed Arc up! That's cool! As is Arc using the elements of his armors to deal more damage with his sword! I did not expect the Color Timer to be weaponized against Noiseler or that Noiseler would be taken care of non-lethally by making him follow the Ultra Slash back into space...but if it works, it works! Man, those are some raw tears. Kazuo may never be able to see Fio, and he can only dream of her planet deep into the universe, but at least he was there for her when she really needed someone and up until his last moments. And Yuma is still there for him as he embraces truly living again, in her honor. Next week: a new Ultra Robot and Gubila! |
Naoyuki uchida did a stellar job as this and the previous episode's special effect director. Hopefully he returned next year
|
I'll never get tired of Arc inventing new ways of using the traditional Ultra fighting skills.
|
Man, this episode was a punch in the guts that I wasn't expecting. Good stuff.
