I just don't get the love for Amiibos/Skylanders/INfinitys.

For the Amiibos, it works across different games so you get more for your money. I can understand the appeal of those but not Sylanders/Infinity where it's required. I guess it's because you get a figurine and something to do with it in game.

Honestly, I initially had no plans to buy all of them. Just the select ones I wanted. But they launched on sale at work, so I bought the whole wave. These just hit and there was another sale, so I thought why not? I'm effectively all in now because I have them all and might as well.

I like the amiibo because they're literally the trophies from the game. Skylanders and Infinity are neat, but there's not enough reason to get those. I have no interest in those games and I have no real attachment to any of those characters. I do like the fact that amiibo are a feature and not a requirement. Function across multiple games is nice too. Having all of them allows me access to w/e features there are in any game.

Scalpers are stupid and these are selling absurdly high. Especially the supposed "discontinued" ones that I have no reason to believe are actually discontinued. I'm getting them all right away so I don't have to worry about not being able to get one later.

Alternatively I could just buy the Japanese versions at roughly the same price but with a little extra for shipping.

I also happen to just really like Nintendo and Smash Bros. Even if I don't use them often, they make wonderful display pieces.

It's not really a whole lot different from collecting little gashapon figures. Only they have an alternate function.

I think the Infinity and Amiibo figurines have some appeal since they're fairly recognizable characters (Amiibos possibly more considering, as PkmnMaster said, they look like the trophies from Smash). Skylanders? I don't recognize a single character from that game and quite obviously most of those characters are Skylander original characters, so unless you've played that game, you'd have no clue who half of those characters are. Isn't it a Spyro game? I can't even tell anymore.

They make good Kaijin substitutes, especially the bigger ones.

It's no different than any other collectable tchotchke like Lock Seeds.

Activision used the Spyro name as a launching pad for marketing the first game. So that way they could get some people interested. But asides from that, Skylanders is its own thing.
