Seven Samurai. It is without a doubt one of the best films I have ever seen, bar none.

Halloween 6 - What the **** did I just watch?! Sure, I know many have told me this movie is atrocious, but seriously, what the hell did I just watch? So Myers is now part of some cult that made him kill his sister as a boy? HUH?! And Jamie suddenly aged like 15 years in 6? The fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu...? Oh, and the house changed again. In the last movie it had a Victorian-like tower to it and now it does not. Loomis' scars are gone. And his friend has been part of the cult all along? And then Myers decides to just kill the cult. Jesus christ, was this movie written and edited by an 8 year old with ADD? It made absolutely no sense nor does Myers' actions. He leaves the house to kill some radio talk show host and then goes back to the house to kill more of the Strode family. Why? What did killing the talk show host do? How was he in any way related to the Strode family that he needed to die? What was up with that ending? Loomis says he has unfinished business and then we just see Myers' mask and knife. IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE!!! I'm giving this movie a 1/10 and that is only because it had an idea in there that might have worked if they let a professional actually write and edit the movie.

Halloween H20 - Okay, this one was quite good and on par with the second movie, if not a little bit better for the slightly lower body count. I was expecting like 20 people to die, but I believe only 6 people did. That was kind of nice. Anyway, I normally hate retcons, but this one did it right and that was not something I expected. The only thing I don't understand is why Myers took 20 years to show up again, but whatever, the movie was actually well thought out. It is far from perfect, as it doesn't really have too much suspense in it, but it was a competent movie with a nice ending. I just love how Laurie is like "OH HELL NO!!" and takes Myers so she can finish the job. And why did it take 6 movies for someone to dismember him? They should have tried that way back in the beginning. :-) Anyway, overall, I give it a 7/10 and I really am unsure how Resurrection even comes into play given Michael has been decapitated, but I guess I'll find out tomorrow.

Halloween Resurrection - Boy does this movie suck! It isn't as bad as 6, but that isn't saying very much. The opening was kind of suspenseful despite spitting all over the ending of H20 just to keep Michael alive, but other than that, this movie blows. The plot was stupid but it was the whole aspect of giving Michael a reason for being evil that really makes this movie plain about terrible. I also don't get the strength of Michael's knife. It is strong enough to chop a person's head off with a quick slash but it can only cut another person's leg? That makes absolutely no sense. Sarah (I think that was her name) should have lost her leg since the other girl lost her head. It is sad that the best thing about the movie was the ridiculously over the top acting and dialog of Busta Rhymes. One other thing that sucked about this movie was its soundtrack. IT seemed like the only music in the movie was the Carpenter theme and as much as I love that theme, it would have been nice to have had more music in this thing. Overall, I'm giving this movie 2/10 and that is only because of the opening and Rhymes yelling at Michael thinking it was a different guy.
IN the long run, I am glad to have finally seen the Halloween series, but none of them lived up to the original. Outside of H20 this series progressively went downhill as it went on as each movie seemed to get worse than the previous one. The original is an incredible piece of work, one of the best horror movies I have seen in a long time (yes I know, that sounds stupid, but since I saw the movie for the first time last year, #dealwithit) and I can definitely see how it started the slasher genre of horror. Carpenter was a master at his work (at least for a time, as it seems like he lost his touch in the early 90s) and looking back on it, I don't think there is a slasher movie that I can say is better than the original Halloween. Sure, the first Nightmare on Elm Street is pretty good, but between the two, I'll say Halloween is superior. Nevertheless, I'm going to rate the series as a whole a 5/10 just because that is what my scores average out to. If I just rated it based on the original, II and H20, I'd give it a 7/10. With that said, October has just begun and there are still lots of movies to watch this month, and I just go this in today and cannot wait to revisit these movies (some i haven't watched since I first bought the Legacy Collection DVDs): http://i1366.photobucket.com/albums/...psdd6f7402.jpg |
So I checked out Prisoners the other day. Jake Gyllenhaal puts in an incredible performance which only makes Hugh Jackman playing Hugh Jackman all the more bland. Although the film was bleak, it was gorgeous to look at and entertaining (if you can call it that) with all the crazy twists and turns. Sadly the way it comes together is mind numbingly stupid, it doesn't quite ruin the experience, but there were much more interesting directions hinted at than the place we end up.

I just finished Clannad: The Movie. To its credit, it was a lot less confusing than the anime, and it was decent for what it was. I think the anime was better, although that's probably because it had more time to develop the story and characters. I did, however, like how absolutely bananas Akkio was in the movie.
And with that, I've finished Clannad. |
Ghosts of Mars - Wow, this is like the greatest movie ever. The acting is so great. I love seeing everyone having one emotion. I love how the editing of the movie is all over the place. I love the music to the movie. I... oh **** it, this movie sucks balls!!! Now I remember why I forgot what happened in the entire movie, it just blows. How the hell is this a John Carpenter movie? The entire concept is just stupid and the "plot" is boring. It's like they had no idea what to do with the movie and just filmed random crap and then stitched it together while doing countless action scenes just to fill up the time. There is nothing positive I can say about this movie at all and I give it a generous 1/10 stars. I really can't give it a 0 as that would mean putting it on the same level as Battlefield Earth (what I consider to be the worst movie ever made) and it is at least battle than that.

Dracula - As always, the movie moves at a slow pace but is still very enjoyable to watch, especially with the Philip Glass score attached to it. While Bela is not my favorite incarnation of Dracula, he pulls off the performance extremely well, but I actually like this version of Van Helsing the best out of any of the incarnations of this story. He might not be an expert with guns (at least on screen), but I really like his personality and the actor who plays him. I also have to say that Universal did a fantastic job remastering this movie for BD. The blacks look incredible, the shadows stand out, and they got rid of the majority of scratch marks and imperfections within the film. I have never seen it look this great and everyone that enjoys this movie should get the BD of it. Overall, I give it a n 8/10.
John Carpenter's Vampires - I haven't seen this movie since it first came out to VHS and I remember why now. The movie isn't bad by any means, and it is better than most of the vampire movies out there (especially these days), the music is great, but the movie is just boring to watch. Plus, it is still missing that John Carpenter cinematography charm the likes of Halloween, The Thing, Escape from NY, They Live, and The Fog have. I don't hate the movie by any means, but I probably will never bother to watch it again and I give it a 4/10. Bram Stoker's Dracula - This is without a doubt my favorite incarnation of Stoker's story in movie form and one of my favorite movies of all time. The set designs, the costumes, the clothing are all gorgeous. The music is incredible and the atmosphere rocks with a lot of colors and beautiful backgrounds. Not to mention Gary Oldman absolutely steals the show as the best Dracula ever done in the media thus far. There are some negatives I have with the movie, as I'm sure they could have chosen someone better for Jonathan and Mina, but they fulfill their roles nicely to bring justice to Stoker's novel compared to the other incarnations. Of course, I do wish there was a bit more of Renfield in this movie, for Tom Waitts was excellent, but that is just something minor in a movie that I consider to be a masterpiece. Overall, I give it a 9/10 and it is nice to see all of Dracula's powers used throughout the entire thing instead of just being mentioned. |
Zombie Halloween - Holy ****, if I thought this movie was bad before, it just got a whole lot worse, if for nothing else, for the fact that IT JUST DOESN'T MAKE SENSE!!!!! The movie spends 50 minutes developing a character that Carpenter developed in 10 minutes. Not to mention Carpenter's version was full of suspense and mood. What the hell does this movie do? Throw in blood after blood and ups the body count by like 300,000. However, nothing even comes out of the development of Michael because it was all pointless. Why do we need 50 minutes spent on a character that does not need developing when that should have gone to giving me a reason to care about this version's Annie, Laurie, and Lynda. It's like Zombie figured you have seen the original so he doesn't need to give those three any sort of development and wastes no time killing them off (or trying to kill them off). Not to mention Danielle Harris was a much better actress when she was 8 because her acting in this movie absolutely sucks. However, the worst part is that Michael's motivations just do not make any sense. In the original he killed Laurie's friends to get at her, but here, he kills nurses, doctors, janitors, truckers, cops, and other random people just for the hell of it. However, it is the fact that he brings Laurie to his house that makes the least sense. What was the point of it? He should have just killed her when he first grabbed her. Oh my god this movie sucks!!!! The only reason I can give this movie a 1/10 is because Zombie pretty much just ripped off Carpenter's score for this pointless and insulting remake. Oh yeah, and because McDowell seems to just go with the flow of the movie and pulls off what he can with what he has to work with. The movie drags on for far too long, wants us to feel sorry for Michael by dragging out his stay at the madhouse while butchering any sort of characterization for the characters we are supposed to care about.
Ugh, I have ranted for far too long on this movie, but it will get worse because my retarded ass is watching Halloween II tomorrow. I really shouldn't, but I cannot help myself. |
So I went to check out How I Live Now largely because I knew it wouldn't last five minutes in our cinema, more than really having any interest in it. And I was damn pleasantly surprised.
The sort of weird blend of Twilight and 28 Days Later is going to appeal to a very small crowd, as the key elements to the world of How I Live Now play second fiddle to the teen romance that only makes sense to the couple themselves, IE basically there is no action and events that would otherwise be the third act set piece of another movie, here largely play off screen and function majoritively as plot devices and nothing more. Plus the whole film is bleak in a way only a British film can be. But for those in that very small audience that this film appeals to, I think will adore this very much. |
Zombie Halloween II - I wish I could go on here and rant at oh my god how down right terrible this movie was. In fact, I was expecting to go in watching a down right terrible horror movie, but even that would have been better than what I got. What I got was something that was almost Battlefield Earth level bad. It was like Rob decided to make a sequel to The Devil's Rejects but throw Michael Myers into it. This movie does not make any sense at all. I could rant, but it isn't worth it. Instead of getting a down right terrible horror movie, I got one of the most boring movies I have ever seen. Nothing happens for 90 minutes and then when something does happen, it makes absolutely no sense and ends without a lick of sense to it. I give this movie a 0/10 stars. It did not even have anything from the music of the series until during the end credits.

I watched Hansel & Gretel, the Asylum one.
...Wow. That was bad :lol I really have no words. I was told it was a parody horror movie, but it played things seriously. So...Yeah. |

I never got why people were so ashamed of liking bad movies, but then I was as equally annoyed when suddenly liking shit films became the cool thing to do and kids on tumblr started wiking the most obscure z-grade films they could find in an attempt to look cool.

But then there are the movies that are just bad. They're not hilariously bad, or so bad it's good. It's just bad, doing enough wrong that it's hard to enjoy, but not taking that extra step into ridiculous territory. That middle ground of Bleh that a lot of Asylum films fall in. |
I can see liking some bad movies, but there is bad, and then you have things like Sharktopus, Sharknado, Lake Placid, Atlantic Rim, etc.

The Creature from the Black Lagoon - You know, I have seen this movie many times, but for some reason I felt like I was watching this movie for the very first time. I'm not sure if it was because of the amazing remastering job Universal did or what, but this movie is so freaking incredible. The Gill Man is just down right awesome in design and the movie is extremely well paced. As a kid I always felt there was not enough of the Gill Man and now I feel there was just enough of him to make him terrifying and badass any time he appeared on screen. I give this movie a 9/10 and it remains to be one of my favorites of the classic horror movies.
Revenge of the Creature - You know, when I was younger, this was my favorite of the Gill Man movies. Now after watching it again for the first time in a few years I have to say this movie is just not that good. After getting to see the Gill Man in HD last night (btw, I am surprised no one has mentioned in any review that the BD set is the first time CftBL has ever been released in its original widescreen presentation) I just realized the costume of the creature is different in this movie and it just does not look as good at all. The head is smaller and the eyes look really fake here. The narrative itself is a little ridiculous and the plot is kind of dumb. The movie is not bad by any means, but honestly, I really don't care if I ever watch this one again. Overall, I'm giving it a 5/10 because it is just that, average. The Creature Walks Among Us - I have never liked this movie and I am not sure why. It could be because the characters are absolutely unlikable. I mean, we have a pompous rich man who owns his wife and treats everyone else like crap. You have the wife that only married the man for money and does whatever she wants. Then you have the guy trying to get with the wife. And the scientist who says it isn't right what Barton wants to do with the Gill Man buy goes ahead and does it anyway. Or maybe it is the entire concept of turning the Gill Man into a man that annoys me. Maybe it is because the movie is just so damn boring to watch. Either way, I didn't like it back in the 90s, I didn't like it when the Legacy sets first came out, and I still do not care for it. I give it a 3/10 stars. Alien - Getting to see this movie at the Alamo Drafthouse in 4K was not only amazing, but it put the movie on a whole new perspective for me. There are things I noticed that I had never realized were there before such as Kane and gang's breath flying out of the top of their helmets when they are heading to the engineer's space ship and the amount of strobe lighting used when Ripley runs into the Xenomorph during the self destruct countdown. And they said they will be showing Aliens next month. Anyway, I give this movie a 9/10 because this movie rocks and is one of the greatest movies ever made!! |
Just got done watching Horror of Dracula. Watching it again, it reminds me that I honestly prefer it over the Legousi version.
|
Finally saw Pacific Rim last night. Fantastic action movie.
|
After Earth.
Losing fear = SEED mode. Whatever it was a drag to watch. Had potential but it didn't work out. |
The Carrie remake.
It was actually really good. Juliane Moore was amazing as Mrs.White, and the actor who played Tommy was believable. Chole was alright as Carrie, but for me at least, only in the scenes when she was distressed, or talking to the other kids. The gym teacher was the worse, and didn't even come off as an adult, but more like a college kid. All in all, it was a great film as it's own film, an adaption of the book, and as a remake. |
Watched Star Wars: The Clone Wars. It's good, but what it is basically a pilot for a new series and they only released it in Theaters to pay Sam Jackson and Christopher Lee for their VO work. And because Money.
Still liked it. I just forgot how much Asoka rubbed me the wrong way when she first appeared :lol |
I couldn't stand Ahsoka for the movie and the first season of that show.
If there was a more infallible character, I'd love to see one... |

http://fc06.deviantart.net/fs36/f/20...MattMoylan.jpg I don't care how heroic you try making Ani look, he's still going to go into an emo rage fit and help a politician kill every member and destroy every artifact of a massive religious order. |
That does raise the question about what happened to her during the Purge.

I watched The Ace Attorney movie. I didn't understand anything because it didn't have subs but i enjoyed it all the same. It was just an awesome flick.

Just finished Oldboy. Great film, but isn't the masterpiece many say it is.
|
Re-watched the good old Blues Brothers for the second time since seeing it at TIFF. Needless to say, that movie is even better the second time around. :D
|
In the spirit of Halloween, I decided to watch The Thing (The original, not the prequel).
It's still pretty good. I enjoyed it. I also accidentally gave the prequel some free advertising when it was released because I spoke of how good "The Thing" was the same day it was released, without remembering that the prequel was a thing :p |
Quote:
Heck, I can only think of 2 movies that fit the bill for what I like: The Thing and The Haunting. Both of the original movies, not the prequel or remake that Lewis and Doug hate respectively. |
Something about horror movies that wears thin on me is the portrayal of endurance for violence's sake.
In real life, getting hit with a pipe will yield a nasty bruise. In an action movie, getting hit with a pipe will yield a bitchin' scar. In a horror movie, getting hit with a pipe will completely obliterate a skull. It quickly reaches laughable levels of violence just for needless and boring gore Quote:
I really hate how characters are portrayed in such movies, and how the movies only seem to care about a body count and jump scares rather than being an actual movie. |
Saw The Evil Dead in movie club this afternoon. It's bad, really really bad. The camera work is shottie, the writing is terrible, the actors are hammy... and I loved every minute of it! :D
