Well. Just happened to listen to Gekiranger's theme and now I think I'm definitely gonna have to watch that series now once I get home.

Kyoryuger 27.
As ever the designs in this show are just wonderful - which makes it all the more surprising how lame Deboss looked - I also love how Endorf's monsters are of an entirely different league, it's just a shame the cooler one of the two was the first to die. Love the amount of unmorphed action in this show, really highlights the badass Souji could have been, if they had actually given him a character to play. I also thought Uchy's secret ninja transformation was hilarious, mainly because it looked like Ian's actor was visibly trying not to laugh for real. Daigo reappears, rips off his shirt...and reveals he is skinny? It was so lame, and the constant closeups only further highlighted how little muscle definition he had. That's a superhero body: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...ale-batman.jpg Carnival is actually really cool though. Breaking Minityra's neck is a little weird - as is the assbite finisher, but both visually and conceptually it's such an awesome upgrade form. |

Boukenger 2.
GOD THAT THEME. So earmwormy! Everything about the Jaryuu is epic. They have dinosaur DNA so that is reason for them to believe they should rule the world - that is just so ridiculous it's awesome, and their base is INSIDE a giant robotic dragon that can walk around under the ocean. That said when it comes to the heroes, this shows mythology is really poorly defined. I kinda assumed we'd get more than just a bit of exposition dumped at the start of the credits, but it apparently appears they're just gonna run off from that. Say what you want about OO but at least they established the characters an dynamic clearly, quickly and precisely. I feel like I've missed episodes here. From what I gather the Chief, sub-chief and blue are part of a government organization which defend the planet through adventuring (whatever the fuck that even means). They have secret labs, yet fight around the planet in a giant robot so it seems fairly counter productive. Meanwhile Matsumi was a treasure hunter, who I guess joined this government organization to get his hands on greater treasures and is partnered with Natsuki because he found her in some ruins? What the hell is even going on? It's frustrating because there are some interesting things going on, I like how the villains are unique clans but a part of a much wider evil organisation. Plus it's an interesting dynamic to make Pink and Yellow the most important Rangers after the Red one. Minus the awful name 'Go Go Dump' this show has some awesome mecha, it's weird for me to like the mecha more than the henshin hero stuff but other than Red and Black everyone has amazingly lame weapons. Although fighting around the globe might make up for that. |
One of Bouken's biggest attractions is it's mecha. It's why I tried watching it. DaiBouken is a really cool mecha and the additions it gets makes it all the cooler.

I dropped Boukenger for petty reasons, nothing substantial or overtly wrong with it. I just didn't like it, is all. I only really cared for the mecha portions.
But you can have fun with it all you want. |

I might give it another go when I finish Megaranger, though. Who knows. Maybe my opinions on the characters will have changed by then. |

Kyoryuger 28. Good action and twists that weren't all about Daigo? That is about as good as Kyoryuger gets. The only thing that let this episode down is Candi was a central part of it. Her acting is almost as atrocious as her song. I'm just glad I've largely been able to avoid all that until this point. |

The other characters, I'm not really sure how you could miss their character focus? Ahim 's kind and charming disposition hiding regret and guilt for not being able to save her planet was touched on in multiple episodes, such as Episode 13 "Tell Me The Way", before finally coming to a conclusion in episode 41 ("Something I Don't Want to Lose"). Luka's back story is also well formulated throughout the show. She's a victim of a planet that was overthrown by the Zangyack and therefore took care of her sister and other orphans after their parents were killed during the invasion (6, "The Most Important Thing"), however she couldn't afford the medicine to keep her little sister alive and therefore focused on stealing money in order to one day open a haven for children orphaned by the Zangyack (34 "A Dream Come True) but after meeting Marvelous and Joe, decided to instead of focusing on one part of the problem, help stop the entire empire. Her seemingly self-centered personality masks her sisterly nature, especially around but not exclusive to Ahim, that creeps up in a lot of her spotlight episodes (again, an example being episode 6). I could go on because there are examples of character focus on pretty much every episode and I haven't touched on Joe, Marvelous and Gai yet, but I really think you're way short-selling Gokaiger. I think the character focus on the season is fantastic and it is by far the Sentai team I've most connected with. Anyway, enough of my Gokaiger fanboying! Lately I've been watching Denji Sentai Megaranger and honestly I've been really enjoying it, far more then I thought I would. The characters all act like High School kids, which is a refreshing change from the usual attempts at depictions of High Schoolers in PR and SS and the story is interesting enough to keep me coming back. The show has a good balance of dark and light-hearted and the action is pretty stellar. I enjoyed Power Rangers In Space and it is pretty strange just how drastically different it is. I'm not exaggerating when I say the only similarity is about half of the fight scenes and the mecha fights, which just makes Saban's claim that SMF is the "most expensive season" all the more hilarious. |
You guys make Gokaiger sound amazing, but I really wanna watch it with more sentai under my belt first.
|
For me, Boukenger was a meh show until Bouken Silver shows up. The Rangers were okay to me and like many I loved the mech parts. But Silver is far and away my favorite character in that show, and I liked him enough to keep watching.
And Gokaiger was my first ever Sentai, so I wouldn't say that a broad knowlege of sentai is a requirement. Remember, the show was still targeted at a primary audience that remembered only as far back as maybe Boukenger. |
I actually never had a problem with the Jan speak as it made sense to me.

Sentai is too kiddy for me in comparison to shows like Rider or GARO. So I thought I may as well watch Boukenger until I end up running out of shows to watch. I also I get that Gokaiger is marketed to a general audience as well, but I wanna have a personal investment in the franchise before watching. |

Gekiranger 1-3
The first I've ever seen of Jan was his cameo in Gokaiger. I wasn't sure how literally to take that raised by tigers line, but there was no way I could've been ready for that scene of him wrestling the panda. I can see how people would find him annoying, but he doesn't bother me at the moment. I can't really compare this season to Jungle Fury at all since JF is a season I haven't seen that much, but does it also have that fly creature commentating over the robot fights? Speaking of which, I really dig the mecha in this. It moves so smoothly, though I guess that's due to the fact that it's not really a robot at all. I really dig the G Gundam esque way they control it too. The whole martial arts theme is really exciting for me, since I got really big into wuxia for whatever reason a couple years back. So all this talk of training and seeing whose school of martial arts is better is pretty cool to me. Out of the three episodes I saw, I'm especially liked the third one! Also on a slightly different subject, I sorta like PR/Sentai teams that start with three members and get more later rather than five. I dunno why, something about it just appeals to me. |

And oh god, I forgot about TVN's subs... |
Yeah the Nihon subs are kind of a pain...I mean I'm sorta interested in what the Gekirangers attacks would mean when translated, but...I guess that ain't gonna happen.
Also why the fuck do they never translate "mou". Doesn't it basically mean, "geeze" or something? Why leave that untranslated?! |
Quote:
Unfortunately, they took things too far an made it a literal translation for everything, including the name of the team. If you can deal with the Gekirangers being called the Wildrangers or something, Rio called Leo, and other such translations, then it'd be up your alley. The Power Rangers wikia features translations for their attacks, however. |
I'd like to point out I'm not slamming TVN in general. Their Boukenger subs are just really, really bad, even by TVN standards.

What I really want is a perfect balance of knowing when to translate things...and when to keep them the same. Honestly no sub group I've seen have ever gotten it right. But maybe some day... |
