I do really like the 00s as a Sentai decade and Boukenger is what got me into it but it might also depend on what period or even couple of years you want as in my experience given the bulk of my childhood was then the 00s was not like all one unified decade .e.g. up to Magiranger was still in 4:3 and SD!

Doing some One Piece re-watches and I heard something that I should've caught much, much earlier: Is Marshall D. Teech/Blackbeard's VA the same as Kyuranger's Champ!?
Always seem to miss these things! |

On the other hand, I've heard it's kind of mediocre overall (not bad, just nothing special) and very episodic, so I've been hesitant to start it. But if that one comes recommended, I wouldn't mind watching it. What do you think? |
I mean considering Boukenger was my favourite Sentai for a long time, personally I can't envisage a scenario in which someone would complete both Boukenger and Operation Overdrive and then come out preferring the latter but that's why I'm not the best person to ask lol.
|
Well I would say in this case Go On would be my pick in this decade having streamed it. The 11 dimension thing was interesting.

Y'all are making this harder, not easier :lol :lol

I recently started it, I'm about 20 eps in, and I love it so far. It's easily one of the better '00s Sentai I've seen. I think because it comes between two fan favorite series (Magiranger and Gekiranger), it tends to get overlooked. But its reputation is totally outdated and due for revision. As for how episodic it is, the arc I'm currently on has been going for about six episodes and still hasn't resolved, so... it definitely doesn't shy away from telling continuing stories. Obviously, this could change as the series progresses, but so far I'd say it's moderately serialized. It's no Dairanger in terms of serialization, but it's way more ongoing-story-focused at this point than the vast majority of the '10s/'20s shows. I'd say the serialization is more-or-less in line with Go-Busters, Kyoryuger, and Kyuranger. And when it does tell episodic one-and-dones, the stories aren't cookie cutter copy-and-paste jobs like some of the lesser Sentai series. The tone, I think, it where the show really sets itself apart. It's less goofy and comedy-centric, with a bit more of a dour vibe, than a lot of Sentai (sort of akin to GoGo V). Maybe this lack of spice and over-the-top strangeness is what turns some people off? I could get on board with that criticism, but that said, I am grateful it doesn't have any screaming-idiots on the cast (looking at you, Kai and Jan and Ban and, well, most '00s reds). And I think the writing is good enough to compensate for the lack of gonzo bizarreness. I'd say it would be a good choice for '00s Sentai if you like a more grounded, adventurous tone and don't mind the dialed-down levels of weirdness. Also, the mechs are some of the best the show has ever turned out, so if you like the miniature work in tokusatsu, you'll be very pleased with Boukenger. BUT -- if you're just trying to narrow it down to Gekiranger or Dekaranger -- I definitely steer you more toward Gekiranger, especially since you seem to prefer more serialized stories. I'd argue that Dekaranger is one of, if not the most, episodic Sentai shows ever made. |

As for serialized stories, I generally do prefer them over episodic motw. However, I don't hate the format - I just usually get bored when it's done poorly. But I've heard Dekaranger does motw extremely well, so I was interested in that. |

Boukenger, to me at least, was the most aggressively unengaging and boring Toku I've ever watched. The characters were beyond bland, the episodes were incredibly basic and the villains were just laughably bad. It was painfully boring and that is coming from someone who prefers episodic shows to serialized ones. Not that I'm saying your opinion is wrong. That "I can't envision" line just kinda got me to share my weird opinion on the show. Even if it is a better show than Overdrive on a technical level. ^^ |
Well at least those were mature reasons well said. Years and years ago I used to come across, like, the worst reasons for hating it on some websites and stuff. :lol
|
Are there any Sentai where somebody other than the Red is the team's leader? And I don't mean the lead character of the show - obviously that's always the focus. But just in terms of lore, somebody who is considered the leader.

Ninja White, Mega Black, Time Pink, Geki Yellow, and Zenkaiser are the ones who come to mind.
|
Oh yeah, Ninja White! I knew there was a reason the idea of a non-red leader sounded familiar.
Thanks. |
Nearly forty weeks too late to be asking this I know, but are we sure his name is Twokaiser and not Tsukaiser?

What was Power Rangers Beast Morphers - Grid Connection -adapted from? It was the Dino Rangers team up special. I know about the Go Busters series having finished it. Which episode of Go Busters?

That was cool. Most of the time team up movies get skipped.
What would be fun is if they had a 4 way dino team up. |
So here's one: Is there any real answer as to roughly where in Japan Shinkenger takes place?
|
Now that Cutanner and Ricky are back in human form, I think there's LOADS of potential for a Goldtsuiker spinoff. What do you all think about this?

Well, results of a poll to decide the best Sentai movie/V-CIN have come up.
Top 10 Most Favorite Super Sentai Movie/V-Cinema Netorabo Survey version from 23 Feb to 2 March 2022 Ten Gokaiger - 152 votes 199 Hero Great Battle - 91 votes Gokaiger vs. Gavan - 61 votes Go-Busters Returns vs. Go-Busters - 49 votes Lupinranger vs. Patranger in a Film - 38 Votes Super Hero Senki - 27 votes Ryusoulger vs. Lupinranger vs. Patranger - 24 votes Go Busters vs. Gokaiger - 24 votes Gaoranger vs. Super Sentai - 24 Votes Carranger vs. Ohranger - 22 votes If I had to pick my top 3, it would probably be Ninninger Returns (for a mix of the set pieces and the fact that two major VAs made onscreen cameos), Episode of Stinger (for the more dramatic, less action-orientated tone working in its favour) and Hurricaneger vs Gaoranger (I’ve reviewed it twice, try searching either up for why). So I’m asking you what your favourite Sentai movies/V-Cins are. |
Dekaranger vs Abaranger is still my favourite returns movie, and Lupat en film is maybe my favourite 'episode' of that show (I really cannot even remember most sentai summer cinema outings anyway).

'Old Question Time'
What exactly was the issue with the actor who played OhPink/Momo in Ohranger? I know there were conflicts and that she might have ruffled feathers in the process, to the point of irritating the actor who played Miura/Aorenger/Big One! The reprisal in Gokaiger and Momo's behavior in the Ohranger Tribute episode was apparently a sly reference to the behavior of the actor in question. |

In other news, the singer of Hurricaneger's theme song sung Ninja Storm's theme song.

What was the thematic methodology which fueled the development of the Black Cross Army in Gorenger? There are times when it doesn't seem to understand what it wants to be cause a few of the Kamen are decidedly random (and a few are extremely dated at best).
The Fuhrer looks like a Klansman, which is definitely villainous. Then we have Boat Ear Mask of Ep. 11, which is just a whole lot of "NO!" and Horn Mask a few episodes later and he also gives questionable vibes. Never understood why Iron Lion Mask of Ep. 41 was destroyed by coin with a swastika on it! And Diamond Mask of Ep. 43 looks like he's wearing a headdress. And then you have WTF designs like Big Ear Mask and "But why?" designs like Fallen Leaves Mask. The Black Cross Kamen are all over the place! Some definitely didn't age well and I'm curious as to what they were thinking of. |

"After Temujin (the VotW) passes him off as an idiot, (Iron Lion Mask) faces the Gorengers in combat, but becomes upset when he doesn't have a medal for his final, ultimate finisher. The Gorengers use Gorenger Storm to create a medal for him, which turns into the Gorenger Storm ball within his stomach, exploding and taking him out." https://powerrangers.fandom.com/wiki/Iron_Lion_Mask |
What do people think of Kiramager? I've been debating watching a modern Sentai sometime soon, and that one kind of intrigues me for some reason. The most "modern" I've gone before with the series is Dekaranger, so I thought it'd be nice to try something from the last few years.

It doesn't do anything new, as far as Sentai goes (Honestly, although Zenkaiger was rumored to be called Sentai Sentai Sentaiger, Kiramager much better fits the bill of being the epitome of "Yep, that's Super Sentai") If it looks interesting, then it'll probably be entertaining enough to watch. |

The difference is that, unlike Dekaranger, Kiramager is a very, very straightforward Sentai series. It's generally well done, but it rarely rocks the boat or deviates from expectations, largely because it came on the heels of several series that shook up the Sentai formula quite a bit. Given ShirakuraP's comments about Zenkaiger and DonBrothers ushering in a new era for Sentai, Kiramager really feels like a purposeful swansong for (and love letter to) the Sentai formula that's dominated the series since Gaoranger. Its strength is definitely in its supporting characters -- KiramePink and KirameBlue are a couple of my favorite Sentai characters from the last handful of years. Reaching back to pre-Deka series for comparison, I'd say it's probably closest in tone to something like Abaranger, Gaoranger, or maybe Megaranger. It's never going to shock or thrill you, but it's still very pleasant and definitely likeable. |
Thanks for the replies everyone. Kiramager sounds very archetypical, which might be nice if I go into it with the idea to get a taste of modern Sentai. The fact the cast seems well liked is also probably a good sign, characters definitely matter to me! I actually didn't realize it was the same head writer as Dekaranger and I'm not sure what to think of that since Dekaranger is just "okay" in my book. Comparing it to even more series just made me even less sure that it would appeal to me, since my reactions to the three Lucha mentioned are "fine" (Abaranger), "strong dislike" (Gaoranger), and "pretty great" (Megaranger). So I have no idea if I'll like the show or not at this point, but I might as well give it a try some time soon!
|
Besides Dekaranger and Kiramager, Arakawa's head writing credits also include Abaranger, Gokaiger, Akibaranger and Kuuga. He's also one of those writers that's had his hand in a LOT of different shows writing individual episodes for them; and quite a significant amount in many cases like Dairanger, Magiranger and Gekiranger
