Less is more. While the driving force is 2 armies struggling in an eons long war, for storytelling purposes, a smaller cast can drive a plot a lot better than a giant one.
Beast Wars told a lot more concise stories as well as had more interesting characters because both factions only tended to have about 7 members at any given time.
Meanwhile, G1 had 20+ per side, with characters showing up for brief snippets out of the blue before vanishing for 20 episodes.
