Yoshi is a Mario character.

They have a wide variety of characters from a gigantic library of franchises. No one wants to see one franchise make the bulk of the cast, regardless of hope popular the particular franchise may be.

Irrelevant. In game, it's a representative of the "Yoshi" franchise, not the Mario one.

That was kind of my mindset going into this Ballot.
I put in Professor Layton and a character from Famicom detective club, the only reference in Smash bros from that game was in SSBM.

The exception to that was Prince Fluff because i feel like there should be one more Kirby representative since that's Sakurai's first baby.

Yeah sorry but that's bullshit no one should be pressured to not request a character they want because the franchise they're from is "over-represented already!"

I'm not saying anyone should be pressured when it comes to who they want to request.
I'm giving you the reasoning as to why. My 3 favorite franchises (Pokemon, F-Zero, Metroid) are at 5 (6 in a few weeks), 1, and 2, but I feel no shame in requesting for more Pokemon characters.

However, when an argument for why [X character] should be added includes "Because the franchise needs more representatives" when it already holds the title of 3rd place for most reps, others will naturally turn that on it's head.

Sorry it's just I saw people bullied in the MVC and Injustice communities for requesting Street Fighter,Avengers,X-Men and Batman or Superman characters instead of obscure nobodies for "variety's sake"

I always opted for Power Girl and Superboy for Injustice, cuz they're hype characters.

I just want Shantae because she pretty much is a pseudo nintendo character at this point. also YW mentioned her not having Japanese support, but this is a poll with ballots for SEVERAL countries. if this was a japan only thing i would agree, but condsidering the ballot form is in english, my hopes for non-Japanese characters can only rise.

I understand. I saw those very same arguments when MvC3 was coming out as well. The difference is that unlike Capcom, which has a backlog of franchises they just don't care for anymore, or comics, which have 70+ years of history that any average Joe can pull up Wikipedia and request random no ones, Nintendo has done a (Somewhat) decent job at keeping it's titles relevant.

While there are tons of obscure Nintendo characters floating about, a lot of requests are for characters that are still relevant, but Nintendo (For some reason) seems to gloss over in favor of their big 5 (Lucas coming out of nowhere is a perfect title, since I don't think a damn soul anticipated his return over cut FE character Roy or the insanely popular 3rd party fighter, Snake :lol).

I see, and that does make sense. I guess I'm just paranoid since Japanese companies always had this Japanese priority thing in terms of opinions. But if they do hold other countries' opinions in high regard, there is a chance.

I was never big on the Super family outside of Supes and Super Girl...
