Just caught Abaranger 1 & 2 thanks to Imagination Station!
I have to say this was a pretty impressive opening gambit for a sentai. I expected to like it, but I really liked it. The idea of the mecha being evil at first, of Asuka losing his powers before he even meets the others, of Emmy & Ryunosuke trying to use the powers first :lol This is a really fun and enjoyable show. I loved seeing the team together in Abaranger Vs Dekaranger anyway, it's one of my favorite VS movies. And I can already tel I'm really going to like the show. Keep up the good work guys! |
Wait, is something subbing AbaRanger for real this time?

Imagination Station is the group that did the initial sub for ToQger before Overtime took the project on. Now their doing Aba, and they've already released 1-4. According to Victorious Imagination who posts here they've already gotten up to episode 35 done and are going to release them roughly weekly to avoid the curse of the last few groups who couldn't finish the show. |

And that is coming from the guy whose favourite sentai is Goseiger. Quote:
I tried to get into that Daimajin show, but the lacklustre action killed it for me. |

Gekiranger 22-24
And I thought these were gonna be entirely filler, but nope! Important stuff is happening all throughout them. Each of these episodes are these little focus episodes for each of the Gekirangers and their masters but it also furthers the story. Well for 22 and 23 at least. 24 was pretty much all plot building upon what happened in the previous two episodes. Rio and Mele manage to revive the last Kenma, though I dunno what animal he is exactly. The other Kenma are even afraid of this guy as he takes Rio's position as head of Rin Jyuken and refuses to teach him anything. So Hawk taught hatred, Jellyfish taught jealousy, and the new guy WOULD teach anger if he thought Rio was worth teaching. And now Rio discovers there's a Rin Jyuden version of Kageki called Dorinki. I'd be disappointed if their wasn't. So as the last Kenma decides to take over, he's plotting to learn the secret to this and supposedly regain his title. Also there's another new guy who can turn into a wisp of golden light who helps out Mele. Something about this guy seems entirely untrustworthy. And now we're introduced to Gou, Retsu's older brother who doesn't believe him strong enough to practice Geki Jyuken. He was kind of a dick about it, but it was all to protect Retsu, who used to be wimpy as a child. Even more interesting is Gou's backstory. He'd used a forbidden Geki Jyuken technique to stop Rio when he was defeating...and it ended up turning him into a were wolf?! and it somehow related to how the Kenshi wound up stuck in animal forms?! Interesting...Apparently being in this form halted his aging. I assume it's the same for all of the Kenma. I also watched Gekiranger the movie. Eh. 33 minutes isn't very long for a movie, but I suppose it's a common length for a lot of Sentai movies. The movie could've benefited by being feature length I think. It was essentially an Enter the Dragon with rangers put on fast forward. Could've been fun if it was a full movie. Instead it was definitely the weakest of the series. But at least it's just a movie that most likely won't matter. That said...the one reasons to see the movie GekiRinTouja was pretty fucking cool. Really liked seeing the two factions team up against a common enemy. |

Gokaiger 07. Just another episode to add to the long list of evidence for the case file of why Noah really should have been Green. I would have loved to have seen this episode focussed on Noah using the Legendary Database to seek out a Master to help him compete with Jake, Gia and Troy.
What are the chances I see Spirit of the Tiger and this just a few hours apart? And wow Spirit of the Tiger was just a really watered down, poor man's version of this episode. I mean this episode just had so much more emotion, imagination, humour. I LOVE this show so much so far, and it only hurts further that Super Megaforce is such a pile of shit. I will say though that both this, AND Spirit of the Tiger both deserved to be a two parter with the amount both episodes tries to tackle in such a short space of time. It's by no means as utterly disappointing a tribute as Spirit of the Tiger was, but it was very rushed at points. After last weeks episode, I was really glad to see a more competent villain this time. His design really was great as well. Sadly as the villain got better the heroes got worse. The Gokai changes are really inconsistent in this show. For every episode that treats every change like a high concept fanfare moment, there is another like this one which makes the changes feel really uninspired and lacklustre. Those Sun Vulcan suits sure are pretty though. Plus I know we've already gone through this but the lack of continuity between the heights of the suit actors and character actors is still really distracting for me. I still love this rag tag bunch of goofs though - the scene of Joe in shadow and completely still in the headscarf was HILARIOUS. Absolutely in love with the Gokai girls especially, Ahim is just gorgeous and although Luka is less so it's like every moment she's on set she's having the time of her life and never holds back showing that through her performance. That is something Megaforce lacks, if the Rangers have the emotion of a tombstone how the hell can we have fun watching their adventures? Here however it's like I'm swept up in a whirlwind of energy and passion for what they are doing and I love it. Not to mention, I find the way Gokaiger tackles characters fascinating. They're pretty much fully developed from the start, and then the show slowly reverse engineers them so we can learn how they got to the point they are now step by step. The show really sells this well, and like I say, it makes a nice change for the usual blank slates we get in sentai who don't really find their true beats until like half way through the show. Plus I really like how differently their "become hero" arc is handled as well. Every sentai is about a bunch of people becoming heroes, but they are usually set up to be heroes from the very start to varying degrees. They never once try to establish the Gokaiger as straight heroes, and even when they do something heroic they always add a grain of salt to remind you that they AREN'T paladins. Not only that, but their "become hero" character arc is so much bigger than others, as they aren't just becoming heroes but etching themselves into the echelon of the sentai legacy, it makes their growth in this regard all the more fascinating. And the stakes and immediacy seem all that greater. |

Gokaiger 08.
Ho'shit we got a LOT of new info this episode. Joe especially became ten times more badass, is that a scouter? I'm guessing Doc is gonna turn out to have some huge twist that makes him like the most important thing in the universe or something, considering this show seems to really go out of its way to make him stand out from the rest of the crew, and usually in a heavy handed negative way. The action has returned to form this episode, it's funny that some of the best fights don't involve them turning into past Rangers at all. It's also funny that some episodes can do some teams so much more justice than others. Like for example, this episode featured yet another Gaoranger change - it's funny this show is so obsessed with a show this fandom doesn't seem to care for at all - and this one was stylish, cool and a great advert for the team. Then you literally watch how they were used last episode and it may as well be an entirely different, and extremely crappier, set of powers all together. Same with the Denjiman tribute, that Electro Punch team attack was AWESOME. I wanna run out and watch that show immediately. Then you see how the Sun Vulcan change was handled last episode, and just how immensely boring that was - the flashiest thing was a green screened background, seriously - like I dunno, maybe the gimmick exposes the changes behind the scenes more dramatically than you may notice when they're using the same powers every episode. Although even with this shows great production, they couldn't make Goggle V look exciting. Those suits are so cheap and ugly, and what they fight with ribbons? Oh God I feel the chills from that.... Sadly as the action got better...the villains got worse again. Were the Sneak Brothers added to the Empire because they're so unfunny it's criminal? It isn't like this show can't do humour, but when they try to make humour focused episodes man does it misfire. At least it wasn't as throwaway as that Luka comedy episode, which is only worth watching if you have a thing for her actress, like the camera man must do. Quote:

I only have to stomach Goggle V once more? I can live with that as this show has been fantastic so far. |
Goggle V is truly boring as shit. Those designs do nothing for me and Goggle Robo is a joke.
Now GoGo V fucking rocked. |

So, which would you classify as more boring? Quote:

Goggle V are never used again outside of Pink using it once by herself and once during the final battle, outside of the Gokaiger VS Go-Busters movie.
So yeah, it has the "honour" of being the only team that ever only gets a full team Change in the series proper once. |
