Escape pods are fine. By why do you need this tiny plane to make up this giant robot?

Because planes are cool. Kids dig planes.

And having an escape pod that turns into a plane is also pretty practical if you wanna get away from the battlefield.

Yeah, being able to maneuver out of the way of incoming fire tends to be helpful for surviving a firefight.

Because Mazinger and Getter Robo did it!

And because having a escape pod that can maneuver is useful, that usually has the side effect of being plane-y.

You need it because all the computer systems are inside it. That way, the complex computer control system you spent billions developing doesn't go up in flames with the relatively cheap body of the Gundam if it goes boom.
