So episode 5 of OOO was better but still not great. It was fun to see Eiji take some of his own initiative finally, as he was pretty much overshadowed by a rubber hand up until this point. There is nothing inherently wrong with him, but I just think Gen is a really great protagonist who ticks all the boxes and Eiji just feels a lot less interesting in comparison. That said, considering Eiji is quite the fighter when he henshins, I would have liked to have seen him stand up for himself more and not just run away. What is it with Kamen Rider protagonists who have insane fighting skills when they transform but are practically a spare part the rest of the time?
Either way it's nice to watch a series where the villains get directly involved, right from the beginning, even if the villains aren't all that impressive at this point for story reasons. I can't wait to see these guys at full power. And I like that they are going for a hole horror thing with the Greed but after watching Kuuga this all feels so very tame. Plus, one thing I really didn't miss from Wizard was the asshole of the week style of story telling that OOO uses as well. Eurgh. Episode Six was once okay but nothing special. That Happy Birthday guy is cool in how odd he is and the fights were still ambitious, even if the new form was kinda underwhelming. And I will say that even with the running away in the last episode, they've at least put in more effort to convince Eiji is in the suit than they did with Godai in Kuuga. But it still just isn't clicking for me in the same way Fourze has. Speaking of Fourze, just watched episode ten, how can you dislike a show with this much heart? Episode ten had me grinning like a fool. This episode was also really well shot and directed as well, I loved the heartfelt conversation between Gen and Tomoko on the moon and the use of associated close ups. It even made some sense of the whole teenager thing, being that the way teenagers are, they can access aspects of the Switches others couldn't. Sorta like the Power Rangers I guess. It's kinda dumb but after Kuuga I'm happy that the series wants to try and explain itself. Also, Fire States is awesome. Electric States feels kinda pointless, Fire States came so soon after it and outshined it so thoroughly. |
OOO is much better with the asshole of the week, since, well, most of them aren't total assholes and have clear, sometimes really unique motivations beyond typical greed.
Though that's also one of my issues with the show, but I won't say anything until you get there. Also yeah, Gatakiriba wasn't exactly incredible, (though I like his cloning ability and how all the clones do scanning charge together. Also it does someting REALLY cool in the last movie) afterall we've seen two thirds of him since episode one, but the combos introduce at a curve, relatively. Especially when you realise how many he's got by the end of the show, and that all of them can interchange. |
I will say that I'm glad OOO said its okay to want things. I was starting to find the whole theme kind of hilarious considering these shows are made to sell toys but Eiji turned that around with his speech in episode six. He's right, money is important, I hate the idealist attitude that you can have a great life with no money.
Os powers are cool but once again, watching this alongside Fourze who can attach weapons to his individual limbs, it's hard not to be a little underwhelmed by the subtle changes Os makes when he transforms. There has yet to be a power that really wowed me, even if all the fight sequences are deliciously ambitious. |
I appreciate the more simplistic approach to OOO powers. Obviously six episodes in he doesn't have a heck of a lot to play around with, but as time goes on teh combos and swapping gets pretty aweosme. As you watch Fourze you will see how kind of fucking dumb his powers can get outside the popular, actually useful ones. I think one is seriously a pogo stick.
I really appreciate how OOO also treats desire/greed as not just being an acceptable aspect of human nature, but a necessary one. Yes, you should want things, money and possesions are important for happy living. It's not just "you want something so you're greedy and bad." I think one guy later is, like, addicted to the lottery, and then spends the last of his wife's money on a ticket, only to actually end up winning big, and to no serious detriment like he blows it all in a cliche way or becomes by riches. It's actually quite a mature and interesting situation. But that's also one of the things that kind of what-the-hell's for a second near the end of teh show. |

There are a lot of silly switches though, I won't deny that. |

Yeah, OOO isn't idealist or damning, it has so far found a great middle ground. Which isn't an easy thing given the subject matter. |
Alright, I was about to go to bed but I feel the need to share this.
Amazon episode 17. The toad monster took off its head, revealing a smaller toad head, and then threw the larger head at Amazon. Man this show is amazing sometimes. |

Episode 07 of OOO was so dumb but really hilarious and a lot of fun. If we get more episodes like this I can see me and OOO clicking.
I really like Gamel, I reckon he is my favourite out of the Five Greed so far but Ankh is pretty cool as well. I also liked Os new helmet, even if its actual powers were kinda crappy. That said the editing in this episode was terrible, the CGI destruction changed from shot to shot and characters would jump around the place as stuff transformed. |

Gamel was chill. I liked him.
I liked all the Greed but Cazari, pretty much. |
So far the Greed have just been a load of...nothing.
I couldn't tell you anything about the bug, cat or shark guys, I don't even remember their names. At least so far Gamel and Ankh have actual personalities. I guess that is part of the reason why OOO isn't clicking, the pacing. Fourze puts a lot of focus on characters and moves along fairly swiftly, OOO really hasn't done a whole lot with seven episodes. |
Bug is a loser, Catface is a shithead, and fishlady is a future guest on Maury with the fucked up mother mentality she sports.
Funny you like Gamel. Most people list him as their least favourite because of his droning, whiney voice. Also, finished Ryuki episode 6: I think Batfart's math is wrong. Since the get go they've touted the thirteen Rider thing. Scissors just got eated by his own monster, and Batdisco says there's eleven riders left, plus himself and Ryuki. That makes thirteen, but considering before Scissors got munched, there would have been fourteen, he's not doing it right. Tell Darkwing to by a better calculator. Also also, this episode really highlights why I find "Kamen Rider as a horror show" a flawed perspective. If it were, it'd be a fucking awful horror show. Seriously, the simple fact that people die is not horror. Not when they're being offed by ridiculous rubber monsters and it silly ways like getting eaten by a monster with no mouth. The episode would've been better if they didn't dramatic-up the death scene and left it just a straight up murder instead of trying to make it gruesome by having the disgusting noises and Batfro looking away like he's not watching two dudes in rubber suits hug and jiggle. Revenge of the also, why do those lazy fucks just expect Beiber girl to make them food and tea on a whim? I know she runs a cafe, but I don't see them pay. Get it your own damn selves. |
It wasn't Gamel's voice that got to me. It was more that he kind of just sat around with his weird ass relationship with Mezul.
Granted, pretty much all of them sat around doing nothing, but they weren't all groping their mother figure while doing so. And I liked Uva. He had a nice design. |
Uva was the best. He would have been a perfect villain if he hadn't gotten the shaft at the finale. Gamel was pretty awesome although you had to take him as a packaged deal with Mezool. Kazari I wanted to obliterate.
|
I will never understand the love for Uva. he never did anything except for one time where he had this neat plan to get cell medals. The most remarkable thing about him was his endurance.
|
I don't understand the hate for Kazari. I loved him. He was one slick cat and that was perfect.
|
I found him offensive.

Bugs got great endurance afterall. Small ones are the most likely to survive
|
But Uva's as big as a person, so shouldn't he be less endur... ant?
BTW, Zolda's shown up. Can someone tell me now if he's a one-off like Scissors or a recurring character because HE IS AWESOME LOOKING and I want his Figuart. Plus his motif is really cool and unique, but I feel it's pretty early for a complete opposite aesthetic. Scissors wasn't exactly Knightly, but since basically everyone I know off afterwards is going to follow the knight motif, tossing in the odd man out without an established continuity in aesthetics seems like a mistiming of what could have been a cool reveal after we had settled into the knight motif. |

Also I loved all the Greeed of OOO. Uva was my favorite. |

Blade 7
So the sunglasses dude is familiar with Hajime....or he at least knows he's an Undead. He seems fairly powerful too. Haha, I assumed Hajime was sort of an ally to the others and was just being aloof, but he really could give less of a shit about the other Riders so far. Mess with his adoptive family, though...Also, since he keeps being referred to as Chalice by Sunglasses, I suppose that's his Rider name. I've got no clue who this mystery organization is now...I originally assumed they were all Undead masquerading as humans like Sunglasses seems to be. But they've got a captive undead and Kenzaki as well. Or...maybe they're Undead, but the main villain Undead. Understandably Kenzaki was pissed off after being kidnapped, forced to fight in an arena, and seeing Hajime just nonchalantly watch it all from a booth...but why did Hajime rage out and fight him? Hmm... And Tachibana to the rescue! ...Or not. Gotta vanquish that fear, Tachibana! Edit: Also another battle in a new area! This time, a hidden lab! |
Ah so the Greed never do anything, they're just going to be sat around all the time like they have in these first seven episodes?
Anyway Fourze, episode 12 was another great episode. Seeing Shun in action is always fun, especially when he does his signature salute (with sound effect) in the Dizer, I never thought I could be so enamoured with something that looks like it belongs in transmorphers. I guess that it does give characters something to do, I like that all characters so far feel like they have a purpose, even if it isn't specifically defined and isn't shouted at us the whole time. Kengo really annoyed me this episode but that was clearly on purpose and they fixed that with a touching scene at the end. |

Episode 13 of Fourze was another great episode by the way. It was nice to see the aftermath of one of the of the week stories and know that all the monster goings on around the school is having cause and effect and consequence, sure it is played mostly for gags but it still makes things actually feel like they matter. Plus the addiction to the Switch is a slightly darker turn than most of the stuff in the series so far. I also liked that they've built a pretty decent mystery around Scorpio's true identity, much better than anything Wizard tries. Just a shame the sweet combo of Fire, Gatling and Launcher wasn't allowed to be played for all its glory but then again 'Dustards', I laughed so hard. My only real disappointment is since it was Shun's fault that he chose to use the Switch, the episode seemed to gloss over that like it didn't want to admit what a massive asshat Shun was just a few episodes ago with any references played more for gags than anything else, making Shun look like an even bigger asshole who is completely insincere. What I like about both OOO and Fourze is the enemies don't just stand there and wait for them to use their powers, they have to move around and dodge and create windows to use their powers. |
Blade 8
Chief to the rescue! And with the exposition about the Undead. So...if I understand the chief's exposition and Koutaro's goofy Planet of the Apes reference correctly...A long time ago, there were Undead based on every species who fought to determine who ruled the Earth. Humans won, so they ruled while the others were sealed into cards? But because they were all still living in the cards for like a millennia, Board wanted to see if they could learn the secrets of immortality and studied them, but fucked up and accidentally freed them. So they made Riders to hunt them down and seal them again. Okay...weird, but pretty cool premise. I sort of like how they tool that long to explain it. Also glad the the whole main group knows Tachibana's problem now and is trying to help him. That bomb scene had really cheap effects, but I lile any scene thar has people teying to sace someone by throwing a bomb out of the window and into the air. And so the dude with the Shades and his organization are Undead. Just the higher level ones. So I suppose this means Hajime's no standard Undead. And now Kenzaki knows it as well. Which probably means he'll hate Hajime more. Hibiki 7 I was going to watch Blade all the way through before going back to Hibiki, but I decided to randomly check this one out. Glad I did. Asumu passed his exam. I was actually unsure whether he would or not so it's cool that he did. So cool thatbhe went to tell Hibiki....and got lost. Oni training looks pretty cool. As a percussionist , I appreciate that Hibiki's training requires him to bash a giant drum. Speaking of instruments, I noticed since they focused on Ibuki fighting the momsters on this episode, they changed the opening to reflect his weapon so they had trumpet as the main instrument and not drums. I think Ive mentioned how much I like how Hibiki's fighting style connsosts of him destroying the monstera with soundwaves from his drum, bit Ibuki"'s is pretty cool to, 'cause the motherfucker has a TRUMPET-MACHINEGUN! |
The dual-purpose weapons in Hibiki are awesome, as are the suits. They actually look organic and convincing and even though it's not like any Kamen Rider show, it may have my favourite designs.

The only bit of Hibiki I've really watched, outside of the Decade episodes, is the 7 Oni movie. That I recommend.
