People talking shit like that usually have no idea about competitive Pokémon. Always use F.E.A.R. against those dudes for maximum humiliation.

Destiny Knot. It isn’t really new (mistake on my part), but the effect of letting the parents pass down 5 of their IV's is, that was introduced with X & Y.

Ah. I figured that was the item. Well, I guess it wouldn't hurt to give it to Ditto while breeding.

Is it just me, or do the pokemon games not seem optimized for giving the tools for competitive play? Just having to do a bunch of crazy grinding and online research isn't very user friendly to me. I know X and Y have been getting better with that but still.

That's because Pokemon isn't intended to reach that level of competitive play. It is competitive by nature, but it was taken a tad too far.
IVs aren't meant to be simple and easy to understand, hence why calculating them is near impossible without tool assist and why perfect IV breeding is so tedious and difficult. XY only recently made EVs easy to get, but even then, that's only if you use Super Training, which is seen as inefficient in comparison to horde battles.

Hell, the steps Pokemon took in XY to make EVs more clear is a fairly large leap, going so far as to even tell you what your Pokemon's current EVs are and how close they are to maxing them out (Being nice enough to even alter it so you max at 252 rather than 255).

It gets annoying and you end up with quite a lot of Level 1 Pokemon that just sit there, but the first time you get that 5-6 IV Pokemon... It feel good and you love it all the more.

I disagree.
I felt drained and burnt when I got my first (Larvesta, I think). It really pushed my limits of how far I was willing to go to train Pokemon, and I really don't have any intention on doing it again, not even for a perfect Milotic (...Maybe...)
