I think it also comes down to different people wanting different thing out of shows. For instance, I'm a very character based viewer. If a show has characters I like and enjoy watching, I am massivley forgiving of plot holes and SFX failures. If I'm enjoying myself watching a charcter's adventures, I usually won't even notice most plot holes until they're pointed out to me. Other people might prefer plot, and any plot holes or continuity gaffes will take them right out of a show.
Therefore, one person can look at a show and declare it a masterpiece because it hits all their personal preference just right, while another will see an awful show whose good points aren't anything they really care about. |
True that. A great plot doesn't mean shit to me if the characters are bad, but great characters don't mean shit to me if the plot is bad.
For a long time I just tried to focus on the action, and although it's still important, I'm now more demanding of shows with deeper characters and less continuity niggles. Like I think the action in Gaim sucks, but I tune in each week because the storytelling is rich and the characterisation is fascinating. Sadly Gokaiger doesn't quite improve on the storytelling front, I know a lot of you shrug it off, but the fact that Gokaiger has less continuity and more lots of scenes placed in a vague order, makes it very hard for me. But it does have some of the best characters out of the sentai I've seen, which has made it so incredibly enjoyable so far, although I can't stand Doc at all. |

I never really am bothered by stuff like that, but occasionally it does. I hate when in the middle of movies, one character has a sudden realization of everything that's going on, which seems to happen all the time. For a toku example, the first episode of Dairanger, where the red and (especially) pink rangers instantly knew how to transform and control RyuseiOh without anybody telling them. The pink ranger knew a couple minutes after meeting the rest of the team, which made absolutely no sense to me. Perhaps it's explained later on, but I couldn't get behind the show because of that. |
I think Rin was already trained in Qi Power beforehand so none of it was a big new thing to her. Its pointed out a couple of times that she's the only one that can use Qi Power outside of her suit.
Unfortunately the show doesn't actually go anywhere with that plot point. |
Rin was connected to some lineage of important blood in their universe but they mentioned it like once and they never focused on her again other than when she was getting her tits grabbed. Because she's a woman, and this is sentai, did you expect anything else?
Ryou though, there is no excuse. WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON. To immediately transforming and fighting better than the rest of the team who have been training for years. None of the suit actors matched up to the characters very well, and Daigo should have been red. |

Went to episode one of Dekaranger and it was pretty good, not the best introduction episode but good, hopefully the rest of the series hold up.

Well just finished the Go-Busters vs. Go-Busters movie and well it was pretty cool, and I just wish now that Black Puuuuuumaaaaa, and Green Hippo were in Go-Busters itself and not just in a movie and I wish the Beast Battery Sentai appears again.

I want the Go-Busters redone...if that isn't the case at least make some Enter and Escape figuarts, whether it be Messiah Forms or the Dark Red Buster form.

They throw off the balance of the core team, most of them are extremely overpowered and just as extremely underdeveloped. They are just pretty shameless toy adds, that seem to have always been added in as an after thought. And before someone tells me that isn't true of modern shows, I'm gonna look at you Gosei Knight. I can't really think of a single sixth, as an adult, I've really enjoyed that much unless the other five Kyoryuger count. |
Are you talking sixths in sentai only or PR as well. Sixes are hit or miss with me. Like I think Ryan from Lightspeed Rescue or Eric from Time Force are pretty cool. And the I liked Cam as well. Does RJ count? He was awesome. And...I think I'm one of the few people to not hate Gem and Gemma on RPM. And honestly....Roboknight was the best character on Megaforce due ti actually havung stuff happen to him.
As fir Sentai, I haven't seen very much so I cant speak for most of them, but while a Gai has a bunchof focus after his debut, it fades out quickly and he just becomes part of the team. He works as a good foil to most of them, I found. And as for Gekiranger, they hinted at Gekiviolet waaaaaaaay back in the early episodes and Gekichopper, to a lesser extent, was hinted at earlier too. Gekiviolet has a lot of ties in the story and Gekichopper...well so far, he's just kind of amazingly awful. A badass fighter and at heart a decent person, but this guy seems like such a tool. |
Speaking mainly of sentai, as this is the sentai thread :lol
If speaking Power Rangers, I'd say every sixth is the shit, as as a kid I loved them all. To be fair, RoboKnight was genuinely the best part of Megaforce as well. But as an adult, watching sentai, without nostalgia, it kinda made me realise how poorly implemented so many of them are. |
Gokaiger 20. Now I really wanna watch Gingaman! So lemme guess, it isn't subbed?
Other than those Deka/Carranger episodes, this was probably the best tribute episode yet showcasing two Gingaman cameos and one of which shows the same level of pro activity the Goseiger had, which only further highlights how disappointing all the other cameos have really been. I don't really count the MagiRanger or Geki ones as "good" because the stuff learnt there has never really been applied through the rest of the series, so they were more just sorta forgettable. Although the GaoRanger was easily the worst tribute out of the bunch, showcasing an utter laziness while completely shattering all sense of logic and continuity while they were at it. Maybe because there were less of them, but I think this is one of the best uses of Basco's trumpet summon, as this time the sixths actually put up a fight and used their power. Doc protecting the doughnuts the whole time was fun as well :lol Plus, as if that trumpet could get more awesome, it can steal legendary powers?! |
The first 35 episodes of Gingaman are subbed. You could watch those and then the last 15 raw as there really isn't anything big left to reveal by that point.

Not hating at all, but OT is going to take for hell and ever to finish scrubbing that show. It's immensely enjoyable already even with TVNihons work on it. Just hit their releases up.

Dairanger 21-25:
-I know I've seen some of this footage before in PR, but seeing the Kibaranger with Won Tiger/Kaidaioh felt a bit jarring because I really remember that footage from my youth :lol. The "riding the tiger" footage really doesn't hold up anymore -Yes Ring Priestess, Kou was responable for killing both of your sisters. He was totally piloting the Dairenoh to kill Neckless Priestess :rolleyes. -Thank fucking god Akomaru is dead. What an annoying piece of shit. Everytime he like "I'll make you suffer Kou!" I like that Kou's automatic reaction was to beat him up. -I believe it was Locke who questioned why Daigo isn't the leader of the team? I have to agree with him. His story with Kujaku has been much more compelling then Ryou's story so far. |

Gokaiger 21. I guess we have to follow one great tribute, with an utterly terrible one, huh?
So what is more monotonous, the mech battles or Gold Mode? I really hope the Gokaiger get some new mech powers soon, or they add some kind of variety to the action, if I see Magi Bind used one more time I may have to jump off a bridge. Yes I know they get a new power this week, but not before they use Full Burst and Magi Bind for like the 9 billionth time. People complain about the old mech battles, but GokaiOh doesn't even move they just immediately launch into the same bit of CGI animation and then the battle ends. IT'S BORING. Same with Gold Mode, please tone it down, and stop using it as the way to polish off EVERY ENEMY. At least Final Wave has a variety of styles, Gold Mode is just the same special effect over and over and it doesn't even look particularly great in the first place, especially with Gai straining Engrish at the top of his lungs over it. Plus worst of all, is once again I'm left with so many questions, continuity is important, I don't care what you people say! Boukenger built their own suits, weapons and zords, so why not just do that again? If I remember correctly it was Government funded thing, so with the world being invaded you'd think the Government would want to rearm not just the Boukenger but as many people as physically possible. BUT WELL FUCK THAT ADVENTUUUURE. |

I wonder how great sentai would have been if they actually cared about continuity.

The last old series I watched from start to finish was DaiRanger back in July )(or Blade during LWW) and then I got through what GUIS had at that time for Kaku. |
I haven't watched a Sentai in full since I rewatched Akibaranger back in October. Of course I restarted Jetman in January, so I guess that counts even though I'm not done with it.

Gokaiger 22. It's like the show actually listened, no Gold Mode and a much more interesting mech fight!
It's funny, I found Joe kinda boring to begin with - ironically when he had the most amount of focus - but now the show has taken a step back and just let him be he's a lot more enjoyable. Like Marvelous he has a huge heart, that is always in the right place, but he just does things unconventionally which is a big part of the reason their bromance works so well. Plus it certainly helps that he doesn't overact quite like the actors for Gai and Luka do, even if in Gai's case it's intentional for the character. Seeing the Dragon Ranger key and the Goseiger keys get used is my kind of fanwanking and the unmorphed fights in this show really are well done. I was so so about them at first, but honestly the suit actors in this show, weird height and build niggles aside, do some of the best jobs of portraying their characters ever even if stuff like the Dynamite Attack totally sucked. |
It's been years since I felt like trying to watch a sentai series but something hit me and I just started. 15 episodes into Zyuranger which is farther than I've ever made it into a series, I think this time I might just finish it and go on to others. Started with Zyu because, y'know, MMPR in my youth.
I think I'm more interested in older series, but may give Gokaiger a watch next anyway. Read good things |
Gokaiger is a pretty nice show. It gives you brief glimpses into older series and a taste of how they worked (Generally. Sometimes they just use the suits for the sake of using them, while others they go full on. Most series that get tribute episodes give you a good feel for their respective series, though).
If you don't mind a few minor spoilers concerning plot twists and deaths, then Gokaiger is great. |
The worst part of Gokaiger, ironically, is the tribute aspect. Fans are quick to defend and make excuses, but the honest truth is sentai is a franchise of half baked ideas and a total disregard for any kind of internal logic or continuity. As such, Gokaiger is given a pretty rocky foundation to begin with, and rather than attempting to perhaps stabilise it or something....they just smash everything together, hoping the sounds of burning logic and the crash of conflicting ideas distracts you from just how stupid everything is.
Everything else though, is pretty damn awesome. The Gokaiger are cool as hell, the action is sweet...as hell and because the show basically has two types of episode 'tribute' or 'character focused' there has been no filler yet and I'm half way through the show, that has to be some kind of sentai world record. About the only time the show is ever boring is during the mech battles, but those are easily glossed over. |
I'm not a fan of the tribute episodes, but it does give you a feel for how some series operated, like Carranger's.
|
I'm going to disagree there. The tributes were some of the best episodes such as the Car, Ginga, Oh, and Hurricanger ones. Oh yeah, and like the CarRanger one, the one with Jet Condor is one of the best episodes of the series.

The tribute episodes are a mixed bag. They're some of the best, but also some of the worst, episodes of the show. It's hard to say they're universally good or bad because they're all pretty different and succeed or fail based on individual merits. Definitely inconsistent. |
There have been some good ones, some fun ones, some utterly forgettable ones but it's the bad ones that stick furthest in your memory. GaoRanger and Boukenger I am looking at you.
