Since my ten episodes away from SPDs finish post still largely stands in my opinion, I want to instead talk about the finale specifically, it was terrible and clear that SPD bit of way more than it could chew. At least it is fucking over!
Additions like the A squad and Grrumm are great in practice but the A Squad were barely in the show and two fights after their introduction they are defeated, so what a waste of time. Same with Broodwing who didn't even get a proper fight before he was defeated and although they could have then used the last episode to focus on Grrumm, they decided to add ANOTHER enemy above him, with so much crammed into those last two episodes, none of it gets a chance to mean anything just like Jungle Fury did. This series wont be going into my favourites list, but Sky will be going into my favourite Ranger list. |
Is Sky the only one you liked? I think series had promise early on as you stated but fell short. I still enjoyed SPD overall.
|
Bridge was impossible to dislike but he still wasn't for me a good character. He didn't ever convince me it was him in the suit and he had no real character arc or growth. If the series had gone all the way with the darker side of itself then I could have understood the need for a goof like Bridge but as the majority of SPD was goofball comedy Bridge just sorta blended in which meant he lost his purpose.
The series peaked at Reflections and I never truly enjoyed it again after that. |
i think the kalish splosions affected the budget in more ways than just not casting a human sam. i think it affected the writing as well.
|
I think it's less writing and more pacing.
One of the big reasons I loved Sky so much was he was like the only character in the series whose motivations were explored and realised, he got a backstory, he got character growth, he got multiple moments in the series which were entirely focused on him, SPD was basically his show. But other aspects of the series, that needed just as much if not more focus, was crammed into those last two episodes with easily about a third of the series being completely pointless and throwaway. There is huge amounts of SPD that is still left with unanswered questions by the end. Not enough to ruin the experience but enough to not get it into my favourites. |
It's really odd that some season of Power Rangers it feels like they get half way through and decide they can just coast till the end since the show changes every year. Other seasons it seems the opposite is true but I wonder if where they are in the ratings has anything to do with it. Like if good ratings early makes the production team stop caring or something.
Bridge is easily the most likeable of the bunch but he didn't really get a fleshed out as you said. Sky is certainly the best fit for the work they do. Still, since the DekaGreen figuarts is so expensive I'm going to get DekaRed and call him Bridge. Wonder when those SWAT figures are gonna come out. |
It just looked like Kalish selected more shit stories than he did good ones.
SPD showed such promise, episodes 9 - 13 made me assume that this would turn out to be a fantastic series but from episode 13 the series basically coasted again til episode 24 when the show peaked. Even the moment between Jack and Sky in Impact fell flat, especially compared to their interactions in early episodes and all stuff hinted like a possible romance between Syd and Jack was dropped. I got myself a Deka Blue Figuarts, since it's the colour Sky is most associated too and he does eventually become proud of his colour. |
If they weren't exclusives I would get Green and Blue. Sky really did develop a fair amount from the first few episodes where he seemed like nothing more than a cookie cutter frat boy with a bloated ego. To be fair it was kinda nuts that Jack gets pulled off the street made the leader with no real explanation. I don't think making Sky #2 to start was wrong but I get why he'd be confused. Leaving the Jack/Syd stuff behind is just one of many things they started and ignored. I know a lot of people who produce children's television don't think the kids can keep up with stuff for more than on episode. Not sure why they seem to think this but they do. Maybe they just thought no one would care about this stuff or that they wouldn't remember it if they didn't mention it every episode. It's why kid's shows are notorious for those long "previously on" clips when the show is less episodic.
|
And even the early douche Sky makes sense when you learn about his past and motivations.
But yeah Jack and Z annoyed me throughout the series, Jack proved he could be red...sorta, but the fuck was the point of Z? And why didn't they explain this? What is the point of an Academy and a democracy if the head of SPD can just pull criminals off the street and give them morphers? Bridge can literally see the colours of truth, Sky's Dad was a former Red Ranger and he's extremely well trained...but apparently Jack, the hothead criminal with no sense of self worth from the streets is the better choice. I guess it was at least more consistent, and followed things through for longer than Dino Thunder did which was basically a series made up of storyline set up that never went anywhere. |

It makes even less sense as well because Kalish clearly had a HUGE budget, so if the Sentai footage didn't quite fit the dynamic and your characters, shoot some new stuff. I think that is the biggest reason why this decision feels so out of place.
|
So I've decided to sit down and give SPD another chance since I did not care for it when it first aired as I am in the mood for some Deka footage and the quality on the Deka subs are horrible. I just finished episode 3 and the show right now is not bad by any means, but I really really cannot take Grumm seriously, especially when he is walking the little girl back to her room.
|
Lol I literally just finished that show and was so glad when it was over. The only thing I truly liked in the series was Sky and the stories surrounding him.
|
Well I'm now 18 episodes into SPD and I am actually enjoying the show. I still don't like Disco Skeletor, and Morgana is getting on my nerves with just one episode, but overall, I'm enjoying it. The last episode I watched had a samurai alien and the rangers had to go to Japan, which is probably my favorite episode of the series thus far. Sadly, one of my favorite DekaRanger episodes was ruined by the SPD equivalent of the AbarePink episode with stupid Boom and his Orange Ranger lies. I do wish the rangers actually got some development though. I mean, sure, they did not have too much development in DekaRanger, but I was hoping that being a PR incarnation they would do more to make me not want to smack the **** out of Pink and wonder why the hell Doggie has such a short temper. It seems like he just randomly goes off on the rangers for something that occurred off screen. So far, Sky and Bridge seem to be the only ones with any development, and even that has kind of teetered off. Hell, Z hasn't had anything since the Sam two parter an Pinky is just there to act like a dumb spoiled blonde. Despite that, I am curious to see where this show is heading.

Sky was a good character, so I didn't mind that much especially as most of his episodes were really well written, but I found it odd that they basically centred the entire show around him and basically put all their effort into him and his arc and seemed to rather begrudgingly write stuff for the other characters |
Especially when they could have easily fleshed out those characters. Even Syd had potential for better stories. Doggie doesn't like when people disturb his naps or something maybe. He's just a grump most of the time but he did have his whole planet destroyed...

Doggie had a character arc of sorts, as Grrumm killed his entire race and he swore never to battle again, until he took up arms to save Kat. This was all fine until randomly his wife turned out to be alive again in like the last five minutes of the show, meaning that the suggested romance between Kruger and Kat for the whole series never amounted to anything. |
So yeah, that made no sense. I just finished episode 32 and something seemed to be jacked up as Morgana was Moira again even though she was Morgana when she fought the DinoThunder rangers and there was no sign of Broodwing's monster...
The ffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff... I'll go over more, as I'm about to watch 33. |

Power Rangers S.P.D. aired some of its episodes out of order.

I saw the first episode of Megaforce again. After watching the first few episodes of Goseiger i noticed that the first battle of the Mega rangers was horribly edited. I noticed they kept jumping locations a lot.
|
Are they out of order on Netflix too? Like, are the episodes numbers wrong?

So I just finished a week long venture of watching Power Rangers SPD and overall, it was not a bad series. I have mixed feelings on DekaRanger, so when this series fired aired back in 2005, I really had no intention of really watching it. Now that I have done so, aside from some specifics, the show was enjoyable and is probably the last Power Rangers series to be so, but I won't know for certain until I finally get to sit down and see if RPM is as good as people make it out to be. Nevertheless, first, the rangers. The rangers themselves were a nice diverse cast of characters, but they really did not grow that much. Sky seemed to be the only one of them that had continuous development throughout the entire show, while Jack seemed to have development only in the first several episodes and then the last few. Syd, Z, and Bridge were pretty much the same characters from episode's 3-38 without ever changing. However, the worst is the Omega Ranger. For one thing, keeping him in costume all of the time really hurt the potential this character had, but what was worse is that he was pretty much just there just because he was in DekaRanger. He was used as nothing more than back-up, wasting a perfectly good time to make him stand out from the others because he was from the future. This is one of the series' major downfalls and one of its worst parts. Cat and Boom had far more development than this guy and they were secondary characters. Hell, the Alpha Squad were better developed. Speaking of which, while as a fan it was cool to see them utilize the MegaRanger/PRiS helmets for A Squad, the execution was laughable. I am not sure if it was just the black, their necks being so thin, or what, but it looked more like someone had just Photoshopped the faces of the helmets onto them as it looked really out of place. Finally, Doggie Crugger also got on my nerves at times as he would just randomly get all pissy for something that happened off-screen or no reason at all. Grumm, Broodwing, and Morgana/Mora were a mixed bag as well. Grumm's costume looked ridiculous to the point that I prefer to call him Disco Skeletor, and while he seemed like he was supposed to be a threatening villain, it is hard to take him serious when he is walking down a hallway holding a child's hand. Mora and Morgana were just down right useless. What was the point of having a girl turn out to actually be a grown up if you aren't going to utilize that either? Why not just have her be a little girl the whole time? Or just have her be a woman with the mindset of a girl, NOT BOTH!! Broodwing was the only one who seemed to know what he was doing the entire series (which probably has more to do with the Deka footage), but his character was once again wasted by his pathetic last few moments of begging for forgiveness. That and he is taken out with the most underwhelming fight scene in the entire show. The episodes themselves were not bad, with a handful of cringe worthy moments spread throughout. The first team up with the Dino Thunder cast was pretty good, but my god, the second team up does not make any sense. The episode itself does not fit in at all with any of the episodes in the series, and the execution was pretty awful. In fact, I'd probably say it is tied with Insomnia (a clip show that brings up one subject matter that is never mentioned again) and Perception (a point of view type episode that should have been interesting, but was down right boring) as the worst episode of the entire series. To make matters worse, the last few episodes of the series just feel rushed as if they were cramming a 5 parter into three episodes. I won't go into specifics so I can avoid spoilers (even though the show is 8 years old), but it was half-assed and like Broodwing's final battle, underwhelming. They also felt a bit out of place and things the previous few episodes were hinting at seemed to not even appear here. Oh, and the CGI in the final mech battle was down right terrible. As I said before, overall, the series was not bad. It had a lot of great moments to it that did outshine the bad, but there was so much potential wasted here. Finally, the Michael Bay explosions get really annoying after a while to the point that I just started screaming the dialog from the Robot Chicken Michael Bay Presents: Explosions! movie trailer. With that said, I give Power Rangers SPD a 6/10. |

Oops, that should have been a 6, not a 7.
Two out of 5 would be a little low as I'm grading it compared to other Power Rangers series. |

That ticked me off if only because Doggie's wife (Arsinia) was ugly as sin. The canine make-up worked well for a male character but not a female one. Kat was about 9000x more attractive. |

Yeah, Doggie's head looked fine when he was in his SPD uniform, but any other time he wasn't, the head was way too big. The worst scene was when he was in the hospital gown.
BTW, as much as I hate the finale, at least Grumm didn't turn into a giant ugly slow moving dinosaur. |
Well, I just finished up the Spirit Ranger arc in Jungle Fury. Some additional thoughts on the series:
*It is nice that the Starlight thing was set up a few episodes prior to when it was needed. It is a bit confusing but I think you can just attribute it to the Starlight having numerous useful properties. *They have stopped trying to hide Theo's vertically challengedness. Seriously, the twin episode really emphasizes how much taller Lily is compared to Theo. *Flit's CGI is horrible. *When could two Rangers pilot the Jungle Master Megazord. *I do like how they're gradually showing Jarrod's growing dominance within Dai Shi. Now, off to watch some Choujyuu Sentai Liveman! |

Oh, and to answer your question, that's Ferbus from Haim Saban's Masked Rider, the infamous American adaptation of Kamen Rider Black RX. |

I think I'll try to even one up that thing. I'm imagining a drunken purple Yoda hippie that speaks in nonsense that only the Uncle can translate to the team. And Desperado Black with his Harvester Robo. |
