Eh, I guess I could take a break from GoBusters. I'm forcing myself to continue it anyway, and that's never a good thing.

Anyway, I know it's not necessary to finish, but still... Quote:
Anywho, I'm gonna start downloading Jetman and give that a shot. It seems to be pretty popular, so it must be fairly good (Yeah, the death was spoiled, but the series surely must be good beyond that). |

Jetman is pretty good IMO. Just get ready for quite a bit of soap opera like moments.
|
Jetman is definitely a victim of hype, as all of these things are, but if you take the hype with a grain of salt and with the context of the knowledge that this IS an early, and dated, sentai in mind then it's a good ride.

(Seriously. Melodrama is one thing, but when a major issue can be resolved by one character just speaking to another, but they refuse to do so, it can get maddening) Quote:

Abaranger 2: Ok... why is it suddenly night time? Last I checked, Robot combinations don't take 4-8 hours. Other than that, It was good. The stuff with AbareBlue and that kid was pretty neat. It's really interesting to see just how different it is from Dino Thunder. The Evolians kind of remind me of the Deboss Legion from Kyoryuger, and oh hurray...an evil little girl... :I

Jetman is a great show, but I do think it is sometimes over hyped. It is my 8th favorite Sentai series though, so the hype is justified for most of it. Locke, I really do not get your tastes at all. You hate DaiRanger. You are not caring for Gokaiger. Yet, you enjoyed Go-Busters and are enjoying Dragon Knight. Your tastes are definitely the exact opposite of mine. Curious, what are your favorite Sentai series thus far? I'm just wondering if we will ever agree on anything. |
Locke is definitely a strange cookie in terms of opinion. I think he and I have only agreed on a series once. Other then that, we're sorta the same person but our opinions on shows are like the polar opposites.

Yeah the hype is largely justified with Jetman but I just know how much it sucks to end up so excited for a show due to the fandom that the show just cannot physically live up to the hype that preceded it. Goseiger is my favourite sentai ever but I also love Liveman and Shinkenger. When I watched that revised Kyoryuger episode list, that was also a lot of fun in the end and I've mostly enjoyed ToQ so far. |
Watched the first episode of Abaranger - the Triceratops sounds like Madoka! Oh God...
Minus some of THE worst effects I've ever seen in a sentai series, this is still, ironically I guess, one of the most refreshingly ambitious opening episodes of a sentai I've ever seen. I mean sure, most sentai have great first episodes, they have to, but most don't literally open with dimension hopping into a Tokyo in panic as robotic dinosaurs go on a rampage. That shit was AWESOME. My only real worry with the show is the mythology, it was pretty convoluted in the opening episode, so I dread to think how it'll be further down the line when they have to actually attempt to explain things. |

Wait, I'm about to download Jetman, and I see something called episode 0. Can anyone explain what that's about?

I can't even make it beyond episode 8 of Goseiger and I've tried three times. |
Goseiger isn't terrible. It just feels confused.

Liking most of Shinkenger is how I feel too, that middle section is just pure boredom. I've wanted to rewatch Shinkenger for ages but remembering that middle slog always turns me away. If you couldn't get past that far in Goseiger, it really isn't for you. The Warstar arc is probably the best arc of the whole show, and I personally found you could have a great experience just watching that part of the show. When they are defeated and the Yuuma Beasts take the stage the show does become a lot more focused and plot heavy, but it's so BORING. It picks up again when the Matrintis arrive, but they arrive way too late and die pretty much as soon as they appear so the show can wrap up, it's a shame because they could have been great. |

It's weird, a lot of the stuff people hate Goseiger for are exactly why I love it.

For example, I found the Warstar to be painfully boring, almost as bad as the Yuuma, but when it started to pick up, boom. Warstar defeated. Move on to the new villains, and etc. |
The Warstar Arc was my favourite and for one thing only, Dereputa, he may not reinvent the wheel, but his battles with Alata are some of my favourites in the whole of sentai and whenever Dereputa got involved "shit got real" in a way rare for sentai, especially these days. Easily one of my all time favourite villains.

Gekiranger 34, 35 36
Sandain appears! Jan, Ran, Retsu, And Gou faced off against Kata while Ken took on Rageku to take down RinJyuken once and for all! It was pretty surprising when all the Kensei were stuck in that ball of stone. I knew it wouldn't last for it was still pretty sad. Jan and Ken seemed to take a page form Yoda by taking on the philosophy of 'Don't think. Feel.' Though it might just be the translation paraphrasing it into that. At any rate Kata end up going giant and the rangers have trouble taking him down. Ken manages to take Rageku down by himself, and the the sacred sword and therefore the power of Sandain, goes to him. Sandain's a pretty decent looking mecha. They called it the Geki Jyuken god and it looks the part. And it acts the part seeing as it's powerful enough to defeat a Kenma. And apparently Brusa Li's final blessing is to power up all the Gekirangers AND the Rinjyuken users. It seems that he approves of their rivalry. Rio now has new found strength and can probably take on Maku for himself. He ended up being so powerful that Jan thought he was Mak when he senses his energy. But it was cool to see the Gekirangers powerful enough to take Maku down for good. Kind of a shame that Long took down Rageku, but his armored form looks cool. And apparently he's the master of a whole new martial art, Genjyuken. I suppose there'll be a whole new line of sort of generals. And 36...well it was partly a clip show, partly a comedic episode. Not much happened of importance aside from introducing a new Genjyuken user that was dragging of coffin around. That said, it was pretty funny seeing Retsu get to use drunken fist and Bei thinking the giant fight at the end was so one sided that he might as well not commentate. In the end Ken was really the only one who suited up this episode, haha. |
Was gonna start rewatching Jetman, but then I remembered I had the Liveman V2s to rewatch so I probably wont be adding anything to my plate yet. Although I will probably watch more Abaranger after I finish Gokaiger. So onwards we press with the flashy pirates.
Guess what episode this was? Episode thirty. The BEST tribute episode of them all, my favourite classic sentai...they used it to further the plot, it didn't paint Jou as a passive flake...it didn't complicate all the mythos. I AM SO HAPPY. I am starting my new job in a few hours and this was such a great way to start the day. I hope it ends as happily as it began. |

But something I particularly enjoy is that none of the Genjyuken "Generals" are throwaway (Except maybe Hiso, but I don't remember if she could be counted as a general or not). But I enjoy SaiDain's entry, using the bloom on both sides. Jyuken is Jyuken, be it Geki or Rin, after all~ SaiDain as a whole is pretty cool too. Imposing and made special since it's not just a construct like the other Geki Beasts. |
Finally got things to calm down for a moment to watch Jetman.
As a start, it was a fairly decent episode. It felt very much like Kakuranger, having to find the warriors who will become our rangers, only only giving us 3 at the start. I like that, since it gives us a little more time to get to know our rangers. For the characters themselves, they're nice. Like always, we spend more time on red over all others, but I like Ryu. He's not the fireball Red or the god among us Red that most recent Red rangers have been. He's brash, but for a good reason, his stake in this battle is personal, and although he has battle skills due to his prior training and job as a (Something), he's not a one man army. He seems initially nihilistic, but it's very believable because of the (Very) recent tragedy that occurred. Raita was also pretty neat. I liked that he refused to become a Jetman (Rather, acknowledge that he already was one) because he hates violence and just wants to tend his farm, only transforming solely because of the circumstances that befell him. His statement of "I hate violence" seems to ring true, fighting the foot soldiers by swinging a hoe around wildly, and, while in suit, to just flail about. Next was Kaori, who didn't do much. However, her bonding slightly with Raita was endearing and her willingness to enter the battle solely for the excitement, while rather shallow (And somewhat cliche for her character type), was fine. Much like Raita, her fighting ability is pitiful, too, which worked. She clearly lived a very sheltered lifestyle, so she wouldn't be able to do much, either. This leads to who I assume is the mentor character, whose name I didn't catch. She's fine, but she didn't get much opportunity to do much. However, what she did get to do was rather great, knocking out Ryu to get him off the Earthbase and then telling him to cry over his loss. It's rather touching, and it says how much action series like Sentai have changed, as I was expecting her to go "Toughen up! We need to protect the earth! Stop bitching like a baby and deal with it!" when he started grieving. Next are the Vyram. There isn't much to say based on their first appearance. They just started wrecking the place, and, at the very end, all came on screen at once to stare at the camera until the credits started rolling. The only real negative that actually brought things down a bit were Raita and Kaori's fighting ability. "But you just said--" I know, but I think they overplayed their lack of ability. I liked that they didn't know how to fight, but even after transforming, they just ran around flailing. They wanted to sell to the audience "These are normal people who only became rangers through random circumstance, not cosmic decision," but I think they took it a bit too far in trying to sell it. Anyway, Jetman's start was solid. I was thinking it'd have a Megaranger vibe, with a fully stocked spaceship to help the rangers, but that thought went flying out the window after 10 minutes :lol |

Just finished Jetman today. Wow, if it isn't my favorite series, it's damn close.
I'll work on Dekaranger next. |
Okie dokie lokie. Episode 2 of Jetto-Jetto-Jettoman :p
It was nice to see the next two characters beyond their momentary appearance. So, Ako first. She's likable, which is nice. I don't quite get her, though. She requests money in return for her actions? Alright then. How was she aware of her newfound abilities, though? With Gai, we saw him finding out about his increased strength through him living his life and stumbling across it, but Ako just knew she had increased traits? That doesn't make sense. Still, she's fun, she doesn't let the money thing become her character trait (Returning the money she got from Kaori because she knew protecting the Earth was more important). Now then, onto the darkhorse, Gai. I must say, for a character cited as "Cool" and "Tragic," I really couldn't stand him in his first outing. We say a snippet of his womanizing ways, but we mostly saw his abrasiveness over all else. I'm fine with the Rangers not being perfect allies, but if there's a limit to how far I'm going to accept, he's definitely skirting it. He literally gets into an all out brawl with Ryu for his own asshole-ish reasons, he then chases him down because he lost the fight, and then he refuses to help kill the monster solely because Ryu was the one to tell him to help kill the fucking monster. He's an ass, and I know it's his first real appearance, but it wasn't a nice start. It makes me not want him on the team. (Aside: Him punching Ryu at the end was hilarious. It subverted my expectations, but while the scene itself was funny, it didn't endear me to the character.) However, this episode did further help Ryu shine, not being "I must convince him to get on my team, so I won't fight back," when Gai started the fight, but rather beating the hell out of him. I like Ryu. :lol Anyway, the effects are...Okay. The transformation is fast and in real time, very reminiscent of Kamen Rider, and the fights are nice. Not quite sure how I feel on the monster designs, however. Fighter Dimension just didn't look nice, and the other monster (Whose name I, once again, didn't catch) just looked too jumbled to properly make sense of. |
Jetman episode 3.
I still don't like Gai. His womanizing was played up more this time and it just feels like he gets away with too much. I guess it helps that only Ryu knows of Gai's dickishness. Yes, he has a heart of gold since he's willing to come back and save Ryu from the Faucet Dimension, but his actions prior just don't feel like the change of heart was warranted. It just occurred spontaneously, though I guess his "Only do what benefits yourself" personality doesn't mean every action he does is for his own good, just that he's more selfish than others, and when put in such a situation, he's not going to let someone die, making him more human. Still, though, I'm just not a fan of his. Ako and Kaori didn't get to do much beyond get tossed around, which is par for the course for Kaori. I do like Raita's fighting strategy, though. Sword holstered on his left side, gun holstered on his right? Chucks a rock at the monster. It's great. Anyway, while I'm fine with Ryu knowing so much about the Jetman's tech and such (Since he was actually a candidate to become one, so it would make sense that he knows about their weapons), but Ryu screaming "Use the Winged Gauntlet!" and Gai knowing exactly what he's talking about? Eh...That could've been handled better... |
Plus the Winged Gauntlet looks like the Power Glove, so lame...

Rewatched Superhero Taisen yesterday and yeah its still craptastic. Although I have to say I enjoyed it much more this time since I knew how incredbilby bad it would turn out and damn to analyze the scenes with the ending in mind is unbelievably funny :lol
Especially the very first scene between Marvelous and Decade is pure comedy gold :lol |
Jetman 4 and 5, a decent little character arc for Kaori. I wasn't a huge fan of her, but she's noble and, while quick in her judgment (Being one to make her decisions "In the moment"), does the right thing in the end. I liked that it established her overall inexperience not just in combat, but in piloting too, stating that she just doesn't like machines. After storming off, this statement rings true in just how traditional a vibe her house gives off. Very old fashioned.
It was also a nice take on the arranged marriage episode so many Sentai do, having her and her fiance already been engaged since childhood. No mother/grandmother running around looking for suitors, no forcing one of her teammates to act like her boyfriend, or any of the sort. It didn't change my opinion on those types of episodes, but I'm glad it had a little variation. I also really enjoyed how the episode ended, falling on a cliffhanger of her unconscious in the Jet Swan after taking a hit and nearly crash landing. It was effective in not rushing her story. The first part being her learning her role and choosing the Jetmen over the money, and the second being her ineptitude in piloting. It was nice that solving the first problem didn't make her an ace pilot, and the episode didn't wrap up cleanly. Episode 5 had her legs physically weakened through her own mental blocks over the shock of what happened. It was nice and helped expand on her relationship with both Ryu and Gai. I liked seeing her overcome her mental block in the middle of a crisis and save Ryu. Then she could spontaneously pilot the Jet Swan perfectly...Huh... Oh well. Jet Icarus gives me a Time Jet Gamma vibe, which is nice. Something else that struck me as they heroes were being attacked by 3 different villains is their hesitance to transform. It strikes me as odd that, in a situation where Gai is being shot at (And later shown to be injured because of it), he refuses to transform to fight back. Additionally, the rangers are more prone to rushing the enemy head on in their civilian form rather than transforming. For a series like Jetman, which doesn't even have a transformation sequence, it's strange that, most of the time, they wait until they're all together before they transform... |
