Anyway, episode 6. Not much to say beyond the first outing of Jet Icarus, and wow. That...Wow...It's so painfully boxy. Areas that look like they should feature some level of depth are just painted details, what little there are to begin with. Well, the episode itself was alright. Gai was a dick after being saved by Ryu, but he later saved Ryu's life, so it...Balances out? |

You'll see why I'm laughing after a few more episodes. |

Oh well. It happens :p |
rewatched the first 10 Episodes of Engine Sentai Go-Onger today and I´m starting to remember why I liked that show when I saw it the first time.
The characters are not a screaming mess like I remembered them to be :lol |
Yeah. Revisiting a series sometimes tends to do that, especially with shows you disliked initially.
For example, on my initial watch of Decade, I hated Yusuke (AU Kuuga) and joined in on the "Yuuseless" bandwagon. On my rewatch, I realized he was the only character doing anything at all. Yeah, Decade helped kill the villains, but generally, Yusuke was the one who bonded with the AU heroes, completely altering my opinion on the character. I'm hoping revisiting Sun Vulcan will yield similar results and it won't be as soul crushingly boring :lol |
The more I saw of Decade the more I hated that show :lol
I never got past the first three Episodes of Sun Vulcan...that show is weird as fuck :lol |

The only real reason why I wanna watch Sun Vulcan one day is because Akibaranger constantly references the shit out of that show :lol

I´m also mentioned to continue watching Megaranger. its a pretty good show. Liked the last bunch of Episodes with Giga Girell and the introduction of Mega Voyager.
Also the Crepe Episode was full with rider references :lol And dat song...damn I never wanna hear that again :lol |
Gekiranger 37 38, and 39
All of these episodes had a running theme o the rangers dealing with their families, while the Rin Jyuken users switch styles to Geki Jyuken. 37 had Ran dealing with her mother who wanted to set her up with a (big surprise) marriage interview. I hear these are a running thing in tokusatsu, though I've only really seen one of these in Ryuki...though come to think of it, Kiva might've had one. At any rate, it was still pretty funny seeing the other Gekirangers attempts to get her out of it plus we get a bit of Ran's background. Seems she had trouble standing up to her mother and decided to take up Geki Jyuken after meeting Shafu, quitting the track team her mother wanted her to be on. Fairly standard plot with her having to explain to her mother what she's really doing by fighting for justice as a Gekiranger but still enjoyable. 38 was one about sibling disputes between Retsu and Gou. I'm sort of conflicted here. On one hand, I can understand Retsu's wanting to eat the pork specifically with one of the other food items in the soup. On the other hand, Gou's sort of right about Rtsu beign too picky. If he wanted to eat the pork with the other item, he should've just done so not put it off to the side. But really, this episode was alright, even if it sort of hinged on the other Gekirangers aside form Retsu and Gou being easily tricked by imposter Retsu. Though his excuses weren't too bad. Cool to have a scene where Gou figures out his brother has been replaced by an imposter using brotherly instincts and whatnot. 39 was all about Miki and Natsume. Natsume must've really gotten along with Jan more so than the other Gekirangers if she chose to stay at his place when she ran away form home. And on that note...Jan has an apartment?! I mean, I guess he has to stay somewhere, but they never really showed where the rangers actually live other than Rio and Mele I guess... And between this episode and the gang one you really shouldnt' fuck with Miki. I mean I knew she knew Jyuken, but she's strong enough to hold off Mele until she went ot Gen Jyuken mode and she can pilot Sandai-Oh just fine too! Overall, the Gekiranger parts of the episode seemed sort of fillerish, but they were pretty fun. And oh man, the Rin Jyuken/Gen Jyuken parts. Long seems to have taken the role as then ext mentor, but he's still shady as shit. The Gen Jyuken users are practitioners of mythical beast fighting styles. So far there's been a basilisk, a minotaur, a unicorn, a pixie, a chimera and...I'm not sure what the boar looking guy's supposed to be. I'm pretty knowledgeable on mythical creatures and he's drawing a blank at what he was. The Gen Jyuken special techniques are terrifying as shit though. One can replace you with a mirror clone in an attempt to trap you in a mirror world forever and the other mind controls children. What kind of fucked up martial arts are these?! Basilisk kind of annoys me, but it's more of the subs insistence to add yo to everything he's saying. I guess, there's no way to translate it directly, but there has to be a better way that doesn't involve making him sound like a parent i nan awful nineties movie attempting to sound 'cool'. Mele's Gen Jyuken form looks pretty cool. Weird that it's phoenix based when she was a chameleon before...I mean the most logical step next would seem like a dragon, but given his name, Long obviously has that spot taken. Still, like I said it's looks cool. She's pretty much has the upper hand on the Geki rangers now because, as Jan said, this is essentially her Super Geki form. And apparently, it makes her stomach cramped according to Bae. And the big reveal as to who was in the coffin. The Chimera fighter is the former White Tiger that was a student alongside Rio and probably Gou! But he's apparently become nothing more than a mindless husk that only knows battle now. Hope this changes soon, because this is an interesting new dynamic. And lastly...in 39 they've replaced the ending song, it seems with character songs for it and the following episodes. One for each Gekiranger and Rin Jyuken users...who are arguably also rangers anyway. First up was Jan's...and well...it's how you'd expect a song by Jan to turn out, but I was in a hurry as it started playing, so I didn't get to hear much of it anyway. |

1. Retsu's evil twin is the actors twin brother in real life. You might also know him as Takuma/Akiba Red #2 from Akibaranger. 2. All of the Genjyuken users styles are based on the Chinese Zodiac. Some are obvious like Long's Dragon Fist and Mele's Phoenix Fist, but otheers like Suugu's Chimera First(Tiger) and Sanyo's Basilisk Fist(tortoise) are more of a mythological take on a particular Zodiac. |
Wait, then what did Rio's Griffon fist represent?

But if I had to guess...they said there were supposed to be 13 Gen Jyuken users, right? Well, in Chinese zodiac myth there was also a thirteenth animal, a cat, that somehow I got kicked out of the running for official zodiac membership one way or another. So that's my guess for what Rio represents. |
...Whoops. My bad. I'm sorry! I kind of forgot! >.>

Up to episode 9 of Jetman.
Raita finally gets an episode. It's rather endearing how it's handled, and I liked it. Unfortunately, while cute and it brought a smile to my face, not much actually happened. I liked watching him hop and flail around in suit, though. That was pretty funny. I'm not sure what Satsuki's final line meant, though. Oh well. The infamous Noodle Dimension is up next~ |

Noodle Dimension is just the icing on the cake. He is seriously, and I'm not joking when I say this, my favorite MOTW EVER. |
Finished Zyuranger, first time finishing a sentai. Going to go modern with Gokaiger next I think, then back to the 90s and Jetman

I recently completed Magiranger and bounced back to finish up Kakuranger my self. The earlier torrents for it don't have a lot of seeders right now but that's cool, I can get my fix of Abaranger each week in the mean time. |

I think Liveman is a better example of how great classic sentai was, personally, for me. Jetman is "fine" but the hype proceeds it, other times I think the hype utterly blinds people toward it.
Jetman is a perfectly average series ultimately, whether you take into account the context, age of it etc whereas Liveman is legitimately great. |

Speaking of classic, I wish a new sentai would use the suffix "man" in the team name again. Haven't had one since Gingaman :( |

I still wanted to spackle in those damn holes in her cheeks, though. |
Kaori wasn't that bad in all fairness. Well I suppose her voice could get a little annoying at time.
|
Kaori isn't really very bad at all in my watch. Yeah, her dimples are on some next level shit, but as a character, she's really not that bad.

I finished up Gokaiger a while back. I was watching it with friends and were pretty much breezing through episodes which is why I didn't keep a log of it here. At any rate it was pretty enjoyable. I had a lot to say but I've forgotten it over the course of putting this review off for a while, but here's what I can remember.
The Megaranger tribute. It was okay, but my real reason for mentioning it is because I really wanted to see what the Megarangers' great power was...but they didn't reveal it till near the end! And they only used it once! It seemed pretty useful to me! The Kakuranger tirbute. Definitely didn't know the Kakuranger version of Ninjor was voiced by Franky! That's fucking awesome. And I guess there's a little One Piece, reference in there, unintentional or not! Gokai Christmas...what? How...Why does the Gokai Cellular even have a Merry Chistmas option?! Then again...it was handed to Gai by some ghosts so why not? The final showdown with Basco was pretty cool. Special mention goes to THAT maneuver Marvelous pulled off. Holy shit.. The entire episode was pretty intense as a whole. Basco was more threatening than the lot of the Zangyack Empire honestly. Kinda felt bad for Damaras. Held back by being assigned to protect an idiot prince, punished for his failures by the emperor, etc, etc. The Gokaiger villains weren't the most developed villains, but they had enough development that I missed 'em when they kicked the bucket. Same goes for Insarn (who the Emperor and his cronies didn't give one shit about) and especially Barizorg. His duel with Joe was pretty awesome. The Emperor certainly looked more threatening and WAS more of a threat than his son, though his track record on Earth isn't too impressive. That red henchmen of his annoyed the shit out of me with his garbly voice though. The final battle against the emperor was pretty badass too. The greatest treasure in the universe was pretty interesting. I can see why it'd be fucking bad if Basco got a hold of it. Still...they could've used it for something else, rather than destroying it. That said, it is pretty Gokaiger-y to decide not to do something the easy way and achieve it on your own terms. All in all, it was a pretty fun watch. I'm gonna miss those pirates. Oh and the bit where Doc morphs into Sentai Sentinel Knight's sword form and Joe wields him was pretty hilarious. I also watched a couple movies! First up was Gokaiger vs Gavan! It was pretty fun honestly. I like old school Gavan. A few things though. I honestly forgot they never killed the older Sneak brother. Weird place to bring him back! and he has a sister?! Wha.... JEALOUSHITTO?! Of all the weird cameos...Man I bet his wife misses him........Anyway! The jail for reformed Sentai villains. Not just reformed Zangyack officers, but Sentai villains in general guess Zangyack just holds a grudge against all who allied with the side of good. I can't speak for most of the characters there as I haven't seen much Sentai, though I definitely recognize most of them from their Power Rangers counterparts, but....why is Bae there? He wasn't even a villain! I mean...you COULD say...he would barely hurt a fly. Heh heh... And lastly old school Gavan was pretty cool. Didn't expect him to have any backstory with Marvelous but that's kind of awesome. I like how his clone was called BOOTLEG Gavan, the most hilarious villain name ever. His actor is pretty popular I take it, since he was Denji Blue and Battle Kenya...but uh...someone help me figure this out...at the end. Why uh...why did that Sentai god or whatever command them to transform for the kids who'd never seen them onscreen together. No one questioned it! THAT WAS WEIRD! Oh and cool Go-busters cameo. Brief though. And finally...Super Hero Taisen. Eh I'll save that one for my next post, this one's long as it is. |
Gokaiger 31.
This episode appealed to me as the Zeo designs are nostalgic but I also remember fuck all about the show, so keeping that in mind, I was impressed by how well the designs and weapons had aged. I mean sure the effects get updated, but the core ideas and visuals are entirely intact. I guess it shows the strength of how great a simple design can be when done well. How is OhRanger as a show, and has it been subbed? Plus, although his appearances are inconsistent and nonsensical any fight with Basco and his armies are always fun - especially now it turns out the dude turns into a friggin demon pirate thing and UTTERLY FUCKS UP THE GOKAIGER. Although I wonder how many people were FURIOUS that this dude is killing off Rangers, OFF SCREEN. The fuck man?! |
