He still loses to the first gym leader, though personally i think it's justified as the first gym is the hardest in the game.

That's not surprising. As much battle experience as Ash and Pikachu have, it would be dull to watch him curbstomp his way through a region.

Well Serena has a crush on him. The writers are definitely implying it. It's probably just gonna get brushed off when gen 7 comes around.

Fixed for you. The Pokemon anime has never been one for subtlety, and unless her crush is the crux of her character, then it'll be gone in a few weeks.

It kind of is her character trait, the only other one i can think of is that she doesn't have a goal in mind for her journey.
