But do check out Kakuranger. I loved it, despite only getting 12 episodes in before having to stop at the time (I think it's currently subbed up to the mid-40's). |

The episode is legit called 'Gai Dies!'

It sounds like a major plot centered episode, but the Juza character was only in 1 episode prior and of all the things I explained, only one was actually relevant to the plot. The rest are all gone with the wind by episode 19. |
I have never felt more sorry for a robot then I do now for G2.

Think of it as like Zeta Gundam and Gundam ZZ only without them being connected stories. Hurricange was comedic just because that was at the time when Toei started to dumb down Sentai. |
Gokaiger 48. What was with that ridiculously overdressed church set? So fucking corny.
Minus laughing at the sheer thickness of the makeup on Marvelous, this episode was pretty enjoyable. We've never gotten to see much of the Galleon despite it being big enough apparently to house four vehicles which have never once been explained. So it was nice to see more areas of the ship, even if they were utterly unconvincing. Also fun - although something that raises a lot of questions too - was seeing the Gokaiger fight themselves. I dunno how the Gokaiger won, but yeah... Plus Basco has single-handedly achieved more than the whole Zangyack Empire - which speaks volumes about them - but I just think he's great. The showdown with Marvelous was also epic. Although if Basco has green blood his lips and skin wouldn't look like they do. |

Well I've finally finished up Jetman. Is it the perfect masterpiece many proclaim it to be? No, but it comes close. Some of the story wasn't that great in that it could have been better or just didn't explain things. Jet Icarus is cool but just doesn't work as a man in a suit. However my only real complaint is pretty much what I said about the story. Other then that, I thought it was a damn good ride all the way through it. It isn't the masterpiece it's said to be, but it comes very close to it in my opinion, and it is easily one of my favorite Sentais.
Oh yeah, might as well get this out of the way. I don't care that Gai died or how he died. Yes it would have been better if he died in battle and not by stopping a robbery, but you know what I don't care. At least it wasn't some bullshit that was never explained. Anyways, great show. But now it's time to watch my first Showa Sentai, and it's also the one people say is even better then Jetman: Liveman. |

Finished up watching 1-5 of Liveman. Not that bad of a show to be honest. Probably the second Showa toku show I've enjoyed the most so far (Black being the first). I question how they were able to build power suits that come with a transformation device, weapons, and giant robots in two years though, that just seems a little out there. But this is toku, so I really shouldn't question it. I don't like the suits that much as I think there's too much white, especially from the waist down. The only suit which looks really nice to me is Blue Dolphin's since it has the stripe on the skirt to break it all up.
But overall I'm enjoying the show. It isn't that bad of one and it is entertaining. |
The project had already started somewhat, it was just altered when they realised Volt could be a threat. And given that they were all super geniuses, 2 years probably isn't much for them as long as they had the materials to do what was needed.

Jetman's Love Explosion.
I hate love triangles (Squares? I dunno) so much. Even when they're well done, they're tedious and dull because, inevitably, one character (In this case, Gai) will be defined by the love shape, while the character being fought over (Kaori) will seem rather heartless. I once noted that I liked that Kaori wasn't stringing along the character with the crush that she doesn't like, while in this episode she does exactly that. Gai is thick headed enough to point his anger towards Ryu and is convinced he can win over Kaori, but Kaori is really becoming more of an antagonist, not realizing that she can be friends with Gai while still telling him her true feelings. Instead being ambiguous when speaking with him, never giving him a straight answer concerning her feelings towards him. Add Raita's crush into the mix and you just have a clusterfuck. It's tedious, and Ryu's stupidity is making it worse. I understand he's still grieving over losing what's her name, but he's almost as bad as Kaori, stringing her along rather than telling her he isn't interested. He chooses to be as ambiguous and dodgy as possible. And that's why I hate love triangles. It's clear the writers wanted to have conflict within the team, but they didn't want Gai to seem needlessly abrasive, so they did what any drama would do. A love triangle. Creates pointless drama where there was none, and because it's love (Thus, acts of passion), the "They should just talk it out" excuse isn't valid. While Jetman's isn't really that bad, it just seems that they tread the same ground over and over with it. Kaori: "I love Ryu!" *Gets shot down by Ryu ignoring her advances. She then runs off crying* Gai: "I love Kaori!" *Chases after her and comforts her. Kaori thanks him then runs off to win over Ryu again* Ryu: "...VYRAM!" *Fight scene that has them working together in perfect harmony as if they weren't just trying to kill each other 30 seconds ago* Oh, and Semimaru hatched. |

Anyway, Jet Garuda and warriors from another dimension, and Jet Icarus was heavily damaged while Semimaru goes on a tear. There isn't much to note, but I do enjoy Jet Garuda's design more than Jet Icarus. Looks cooler, and the jet mode has more to it. As for the new characters, no names or anything. I did like that they actually got along with the team (I'm rather used to new characters who have a history with same villains to be like "Stay out of it. You guys suck the big one. We'll handle them and win this fight" and just be general cocky assholes), making it rather interesting. |

Anyway, alt dimension characters died. Dan briefly got to transform before getting axed off, at least. Man, this show has a problem with how long these characters last. I know they tried to do something similar with Ryu and what's his name with Mei and what's her name, but like in "Gai Dies!", there was just no time to establish anything before these new characters get removed from the picture... |
Well, I decided to return to super sentai and continue on with watching Jetman. I'm in the middle of it and I also started watching Kakuranger. The random narrator in Kakuranger felt off at first, but I learned to love him. He's hilarious. I love Jiraiya's random spouts of English and how it confuses the team.

Dan in the episode is played by the actor who played Dan/Tricera Ranger in Zyuranger. I just find it hilarious that he was in two Sentais back to back and played a character with the same name. Spoiler alert, Geki's actor shows up later too and so does toku bad ass Yutaka Hirose. |

Gokaiger 49. The greatest treasure...is the triforce?!
When they introduced the conflict of the fact they couldn't use the remaining five powers because Basco took them by force, I thought a really interesting dynamic had been introduced. But by the time the OPENING credits had rolled, they'd already resolved it... that was pointless. The next piece of narrative conflict, is sadly utterly pathetic, but also ends up being what the episode is shaped by. The Will of The Earth literally gives you the power to do ANYTHING so you could wish that there was never evil and never will there be evil again. Moral and ethical debates aside, of course. So why is that not worth sacrificing the super sentai powers? The super sentai powers only exist to fight evil, all of the Rangers already gave up their powers to push back evil, so surely removing evil from reality itself is worth also removing the powers from reality itself? I don't get what the problem is here? Choosing to not sacrifice them is just not the most logical choice in any scenario, unless your wish is to see Luka in a maid outfit again. And if it could be any worse, they chuck in an utterly pointless mech battle right in the middle of the proceedings for no real purpose at all. Because y'know, the mech battles aren't the single most boring part of this show, or anything. I mean honestly Insarn was pretty cool, but I don't think having a good send off should mean you should also forgive a bad villain. And sadly, that is all Insarn really has been as the most she has done in the entire series was make us laugh in the Carranger episode. Shinknger's villains may have sat on their hands for a lot of the season, but they had in story reasons too. Whether you like them or not, that is up to you. There is absolutely no in story reason for why the Zangyack are so shit. Especially when you see so many flashbacks of decimated worlds under their reign. And yes I get if they sent all their ships down at once there'd be no story which is why they've had to save it for the last couple of episodes of the season. But the show makes no attempt to truly explain why one monster is being sent down one at a time while about a thousand ships just sit in orbit and if they show doesn't convince me of one of its most basic, core elements then we have a problem here. |
Gokaiger 50. Did Marvelous just imply his heart on the right hand side? How fucking corny.
This episode was as frustrating, as it was stupid as it was boring. I thought the whole story of this show was seeing the Gokaiger grow into a true sentai? So why would Marvelous suggest running when the city was being decimated? I wonder how many millions died when they crashed in the city, you think they'd maybe at least try and steer clear? WHETHER OR NOT TO USE THE WILL OF THE EARTH ISN'T EVEN A CHOICE. FUCKING USE IT, YOU FUCKING MORONS. Ahem. The Pirates care more about a bunch of plastic keys relating to a bunch of powers, and people, they never once cared about for the majority of the series than the innocent lives they're meant to be fighting for in the first place. This is supposed to show the growth of the Gokaiger, but from the extremely conflicted opening sequence to the dialogue that suggests the entire show is aware of how pathetically contrived all this is, it was more like a giant piece of storytelling regression instead. I mean what, no keys mean the Rangers themselves die? WHY? What sense does that make? What logic is this even operating on? Is that so it makes it seem like more of a choice? Because it still doesn't make a lick of fucking difference. It doesn't even line up with the shows own mythology. Well other than the fact that this show throws in everything into the pot and if it all clashes, call it fucking Shunpei. And then the show tries to guilt trip the audience 'why would you take it away from them?' what are you talking about? Our sentai cameos have ranged from "I'm gonna use my magic powers, not to fight, but to be mysterious" to "Hey apparently the DekaRangers are still a thing but we aren't helping the Earth with their alien invasion because.." to "I guess teaching kids martial arts while the Earth is invaded is probably useful... somehow...." to "I've got a giant fucking robot lion. Am I fighting? Lol no." to "We're motherfuckin' samurai - what are we helping with the fighting? Oh lol no of course not.". I could go on. If we had actually seen them truly fighting and trying their hardest during the invasion then maybe I could appreciate this more but that is not what happened. People can defend for themselves?! I legitimately wasn't sure, as in sentai's world there appear to be no police or military and apparently losing your costume is enough for the vast majority of Rangers to full on give up fighting, so I figured the humans would just not even try and fend for themselves by that logic. Well fuck, only one more episode to go at least. This is fast turning into the worst sentai final I have ever watched. It's like a new writer suddenly joined the show who had never seen a single episode before this. FUCK HUMAN LIVES, BUY TOYS KIDS. BUY TOYS KIDS. BUY TOYS KIDS. BUY BUY BUY! This episode was disgustingly self congratulatory and has put me in the foulest of moods. |
Sun Vulcan 01.
Although pretty dated, and really campy, this show has some pretty solid ideas - which at least for this episode - smooth out some of my biggest issues with this franchise in general sadly pretty much all of that is ruined by the intense misogyny of it all. I really like the Vul Armour but the basically complete lack of any kind of special effects undermines any interest they may have initially provided, although their mecha is pretty cool. But yeah, I won't be watching another episode of this. |
I wish the Ultimate Treasure was better explained too. I was completely against the idea of not using it, even if it would destroy the potential for future cross overs and stuff and be sort of anti-climatic. It'd definitely have added a layer on what it means to be a Super Sentai if they all agreed to let go of their powers to save the universe from Zangyack once and for all.
They didn't even elaborate on the cost of it. Did it just flat out mean Super Sentai would cease to exist? Does that cross over through time and mean that they never existed? It just, it just didn't make sense really. That's a big minus to the Gokaiger finale for me. Also, Goushi made a way more fucking convincing argument then the Gokaiger did. I literally screamed at Gai when he shot it. I mean, good going guys, sure the heroes still exist, but that thing could've brought back the billions of lives the Zangyack had killed. Come on. Not doing it is not heroic, its just too dumb to live. I loved the two-parter from then on though, so we're good, Gokaiger, we're good. Except for the focus of Gai over everyone else in the final few battles, that I didn't like either. |

Additionally, they'd only eliminate the Zangyack, while there would be decades of other Sentai villains who would not be stopped. |
Quote:
That makes their decision a lot better, I just wish they'd have explained it a little more or factored that part into their decision making a little more vocally. Or are you saying that's not how it worked? I'm a little confused. If it meant that the old Sentai villains would've been able to conquer Earth/the universe, then that's a good decision. If all it meant was the past Sentai lost their powers (which they didn't even have at that point in time, I might add) or even died, then that's an awful decision. |
Quote:
If I recall, they could actually reshape the universe, but they explicitly name Zangyack and only Zangyack. I kind of agree that they needed to explain the situation a little better, though, but I guess the dramatic tension would have been lost if they spent an extra 5 minutes talking about it. |
OK, that makes me far more content with the whole thing. Thanks for explaining!
Yeah if I remember correctly all they really wanted to do was to wipe out the Zangyack and restore the planets they destroyed. |
That explains nothing Matrix. The Will of The Earth literally says it can use the keys to do ANYTHING. So yes, it was selfish of the Gokaiger to focus specifically on the Zangyack and not evil at large in the first place. But then to go out and destroy it is not only selfish, but asinine.

I dunno, for me it's ruined the series. The whole series was building to something which the show completely discarded and for reasons that make no sense at all. It is some of the very worst writing I've seen in toku and it's dropped Gokaiger pretty hard in my rankings.
Lots of people have found ways to talk themselves into accepting the shows flaws - like the pathetic representations of past heroes - but honestly now I've seen how Gokaiger has played out I don't get how you can say it's better than 'just okay'. From Shounen Stock Character Marvelous to the utterly terrible and ineffective villains I'm finding it hard to remember why I ever enjoyed this series. |
Quote:
Sentai would cease to exist, but villainy and evil would not. That's not just taking the past into account, but the future as well. Enter and Deboss were both stopped by a Sentai, but the Gokaigers didn't know they would exist. Even if they altered the past so that every villain team from the past 30+ years would be gone, there would still be the future that they couldn't see and alter. And that's only the future. Unless the Gokaigers created a perfect universe (Which is impossible, by the way, since there are multiple villain teams in the past that hail from alternate universes, thus technically out of the Treasure's reach to affect), using it would, ultimately, be the wrong decision. |
But by the same logic, the series explains that only the thirty four sentai would cease to exist. So if they removed all evil, and then one came from another dimension later then a new sentai could still rise. They always do. There have been tech, magic and everything in between.

Didn't they say Super Sentai in general?
