Cool interview with JDF. Was interesting to hear the specific influences he had on Soul of the Dragon. |
So uh... if y'all wanna see my all time favorite episode of Power Rangers, here it is.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GlQymbgTg-0 |
So not only did we get MMPR Season 1 last week uploaded in full, apparently this is was part of a new rollout program they're doing.
As a result, the current series they were putting on Youtube, Wild Force, Dino Thunder, and Jungle Fury, now have all their episodes uploaded. Playlists vary because they're kind of a mess in regards to order. Aside from MMPR 1 and Dino Thunder, but still. This means my favorite PR Crossover of all time is here. Well two of them since Wild Force had my favorites. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-cHadutGIRA |

Beast Morphers Episode 15 Dino Fury Episode 17 Both VIA Netflix. |
Recently finished watching Day of Destiny, which is the Demonstration Campaign for the official Power Rangers tabletop system that Renegade Studios is releasing soon. While I don't think the campaign itself is anything particularly great(the system it uses even less so), there was one thing that really stood out to me throughout the entire thing that kept me going.
That being Kian, the Pink Ranger of the team. Not only did Xander Jeanneret do a great job as a player, always looking out for the team and inching the story in places he felt would be the most interesting, but he also had a really solid natural charisma to him all through ontop of some overall great fashion sense. Kian the character also had a really interesting character arc to him that I legit actually got invested in, and I'm usually not one for romance! But, the important part overall was that it was easy to tell everyone at the table was having fun with the game they were playing and the story that they were telling. While not personally my thing alot of times, it was hard not to smile or laugh along at some points just due to that natural energy that was carried through each session. While not as good as Hyper Force, there is still stuff to enjoy, so if you like these sorts of things, check it out! |
Having finished Go Busters and Ryu I'm now back to the US episodes this week for Beast Morphers and Dino Fury.
|
Just got done reading Power Rangers Unlimited: Heir to Darkness/Edge of Darkness.
I liked it! However, for a comic advertised as revealing the origins of the Phantom Ranger... while we do get a couple details, he's still left a mystery mostly. That said, the backstory we got for literally every other character who showed up in the comic was stuff I really dug, even if some of the panel formatting made a couple scenes slightly confusing for me. Overall I do recommend it, but you really should know upfront that if you're going in expecting to learn everything there is to know about the Phantom Ranger, this comic ain't it. I also feel bad for anyone who's a fan of Flashman. Might make the first few pages a tad rough for you. Also I totally failed to realize that Dee was Divatox until the artwork at the end outright told me, haha. |

As of now, I started re-watching the first season of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.
|
Since 2016, I watched Power Rangers from Mighty Morphin and now I keeping up Beast Morphers . Love this season. Devon is a great Red Ranger and all the cast are incredible as well. Roxy is so cute and the Giant robo scenes is a amazing
|
Beast Morphers definitely has alot of good things going for it. It was clear that Saban wanted to go out with a bang, and Hasbro was there to help.

Got tired of waiting for the final bit of it to drop and began watching Dino Fury. Binged the first six episodes tonight and so far it's not bad. Probably the big things I noticed off the bat are that the soundtrack is very 90s/early 2000s videogame and that this season isn't as good at hiding the stock footage as Beast Morphers was.
Those aside, I do personally get a kick out of all of the little nods that the show been doing. Such as J-Borg being from Hartford Robotics and Izzy making a reference to Kimberley when first getting into the Megazord. As the early episodes are mainly just meant to introduce us to our cast and how they'll play off eachother, there's not much else to say? The Morphing Sequence is cool, I like how Warden Garcia is portrayed as a dude who's just trying to earnestly do his job, and the posing being a legit part of the training was pretty funny. Heck, there have been a surprisingly decent number of lines that I've gotten a kick out of so far. Probably for the first time ever though, I'm not really feeling the new comedy duo? Like, they're not bad per se, but just kinda whatever? Maybe they'll grow on me. Hoping the rest of the show drops by the time I get through what's already there. |
As of last night, I finished re-watching the first season of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and it's just as fun and enjoyable as I remembered it being from the last time I watched the season several years ago.

I think Dream meant to say "not bad per se", given the context of the rest of their post and how that saying usually goes

------ Also, now up through episode 12, and while I don't think the show is really doing anything to super stand out as of yet, it does have a few more things going for it. Namely, I've noticed that the overall theme of the show seems to be about lies and deception? Alot of the plots so far have been centered around things not being as they first seem, and in a variety of ways too. Seems like more often than not though the default is stories about how things that seem too good to be true usually are. This also might be the first season where I like the villains more than the Rangers? Void Knight being Mr. Freeze was a great twist, Mucus is consistently funny and has a surprisingly good win record for someone constantly being told to shut up, and Boomtower and Slither are just fun to watch. Not to sell the Rangers short though, as so far I'm really digging Javi in terms of both personality and storyline. Episode 11 especially was a good highlight for him, and the Mood Beam lead to some great character humor across the cast. I also gotta imagine that the staff really liked Ninja Steel, given that not only is there a semi-crossover episode in the form of Mick coming back but also a few references to the season itself being sprinkled about. Which, hey, as someone who liked that season, I ain't complaining. |

While I'm not a big fan of the OP, I do think the background music during fights has this cool cosmic techno feeling that I enjoy. Also during the Morphin' sequence is pretty epic! Quote:

"Hey, you're not supposed to be here!" "Yeah well neither are you!" Each episode has atleast one bit that gives me a good laugh, and it so far hasn't become obnoxious or overstayed its welcome like how MCU-style humor has for me. |
With Beast Morphers out of the way I can resume Dino Fury before the last 11 release on Netflix. I figured with the wait I'd hold on watching Dino Fury.
|
Now up to 18. And man, Javi got the short end of the stick on this block, what with him not getting a single focus episode out of it. Although man, that subtext with him dressing as his dad for Halloween. Yikes.
Then again, I guess someone had to take a backseat given that this chunk of the show features the debut of the Gold Ranger and all. Aiyon is an interesting addition to the cast, although I gotta say, when it came to the past conflict he had with Zayto, I was 100% on Zayto's' side. It's not as though Zayto's' decision to release the Sporix was made with any ill intent, and he did immediately try to rectify the mistake via leading the knights in the charge against them. Like, yeah, technically it is Zayto's' fault that the initial purge happened, but without him the Sporix wouldn't have been resealed in the first place. Hardly something to call him a bad person/leader over. This chunk also featured the (in)famous episode 13, wherein we learn who Izzy falls in love with. And, man, it's so incredibly disappointing(and kinda funny) that people got so up in arms over this episode considering it's written like alot of other "secret crush" stories and the most that Izzy and Fern do is hold hands. Very sweet and innocent. And was very happy to see the show portray LGBT people as just a normal aspect of life. Aaannd that's about all I got in terms of specifics. Each episode has just been a decent bit of character development for our main cast, with the only other thing that stands out being how Amelia, the Pink Ranger, is the one to unlock the group's' super mode, which is pretty unique. Reminded me of how Chloe was the one to get the Battlizer in Hyper Force. |

But, yeah! Just finished up season one and am a couple episodes into season 2. If anyone wants my current impression of the show, so far I think it's... okay. Nothing incredible, but nothing really outstanding either, which is kind of a shame given that this is the first season that is 100% Hasbro's'. When it comes to specific episodes, episode 19 was such a wasted opportunity. Isn't it like, a law of TV/movie writing that if you're gonna have body swapping as a plot that you need to have the characters get into wacky hijinks? Instead it all takes a backseat to Pop-pop going on a date. And like, yeah, that was really sweet and all, but it made the body swapping aspect feel really arbitrary. And then there's episode 21, the season finale. Hoo boy I did NOT like this one at all! Normally I find Ollie to be kind of a prick, but man, this episode did a complete role reversal on that one. Yeah, how dare Ollie not want to put his mother in mortal danger, right? And then when it turns out he's actually right about what'd go down, the moral is "Well we gave her the option and she said yes, and we saved her eventually, ergo nothing bad happened!" Just... what?? I friggen lost it when part of the ending has Ollie apologizing to everyone else about the situation. Just, no, screw that. Ontop of that there's the way that the Morphin' Masters come in to restore everyone's' powers at the end, which just robs any and all agency and makes the entire experience feel incredibly cheap. This episode actually had me rooting for Void Knight, because not only does he have a sympathetic goal, but him succeeding would've made for a far more interesting plot development. Granted, he ends up winning a few episodes later anyway(the episode I left off at), but still. Would've been a good shake-up to the status quo. The Christmas special was nice and sweet as they usually are. Surprisingly less clip-showy than what we've been getting since the Neo-Saban Era, and having Javi and Solon(my two favorites so far) be the focal points was a good plus. The only other episode I really wanna talk about is episode 26(S2: E4), wherein I'm not exactly sure I jive with the moral? The Zord that's the subject of the episode is for all intents and purposes a pet, and I didn't really like how Aiyon's' bond with it was totally undermined by Ollie's' cold logic. I feel like a much better angle to go at would've been to find a balance: Have the moral be knowing when to use your head and when to use your heart. That all aside, the villains are still great. Loving the main trio of Void Knight, Mucus, and Slither especially. Much better villains than what we've gotten over the past few seasons, I think(and I like most of those villains!). |
I finished Beast Morphers yesterday.
Now to resume Dino Fury. |

Now caught up on what we have of Dino Fury on Netflix, and if you want the short version of my current takeaway, it's that Void Knight and Javi are the best and that Zayto is the worst.
The biggest point of contention is that when Void Knight pleas to join the Rangers after everything in his life has gone south, it's Zayto who holds the biggest point of contention; Even noting how Void Knight was the one to release the Sporix, without even the slightest hint of irony or awareness. Like, yeah, I get being skeptical due to all the terror that Void Knight has caused, but really, Zayto and/or Aiyon should've been the one(s) to bridge the gap, rather than widen it. Instead the honor of bridging it goes to Javi, who remains my favorite Ranger of the group. Speaking of making up for mistakes though, I've noticed that this show has a real bad habit of making the characters who have done nothing wrong(especially by comparison) be the ones to apologize. Like, I get the idea of meeting people in the middle and being the bigger man, but like, Javi was 100% right about the way Garcia had been treating him, and Aiyon was absolutely in the right about how Izzy had been treating him ever since the bike race. I know that was alot of complaining, but I do still think that the show overall is fine, just rough in some areas. Where it really shines for me are the character interactions, alot of the smart alack dialogue, and the great action ripped right from the Sentai. I also do appreciate the increased focus on continuity with past seasons, although I suppose I could understand if people saw that as nostalgia-baiting. If nothing else, I have Void Knight's' arc to cling to(even if turning him into Void King robbed him of it a little), and characters that I like is really all that I need when it comes to the stories I consume. |
I'll be finishing Dino Fury. I had wanted to wait til we had a re start date.
|
I've finished up the last bit of Dino Fury and, well, I'll just be straight to the point here: I was rather let down by alot of it.
Many of the problems that I had with the season that I'd voiced while watching the first three quarters of it were not only not improved upon, I'd almost argue that they were actually doubled down on and possibly made worse. Alot of the specifics of the plot don't make much sense, there's alot of double standards in the morals of the week, all of the side characters are far more interesting than the Rangers are, the sillier aspects come across like the staff is ashamed of them, and, worst of all, the introduction of the Morphin' Masters into the grand scheme of things end up removing any and all stakes not just from this show, but every single Power Rangers entry going forward. Once it was revealed that the Legendary Battle was not won via the combined efforts and valor of all of the various Rangers across the years coming together, but rather the machinations of the Green Morphin' Master, I had thoroughly checked out and the rest of the season never really did anything to pull me back in. It's the type of retcon that makes me wonder just what in the world the staff behind the show were thinking when deciding to implement it. Not to mention the ending being a total non-ending in order to set up for Cosmic Fury does nothing to help the show with its own subtitle stand on its own legs. The way Cosmic Fury itself is being handled is also not really optimal for my own personal tastes. Between all of this and the rather bold statements made by Simon Bennett online makes me think that the Hasbro era of Power Rangers might ending up being one that isn't exactly made with my own personal tastes in mind. Despite all of that though, there were still aspects to the show that I liked. The parts where the show truly signs really do have to do with its dialogue alot of the time. The most funny moments come from banter between the cast, with even the episodes that I really didn't like having some good lines in them. The villains, for the most part, were consistently fun too: Mucus, Slither, and Void Knight especially. And of course there's the action aspect which never gets old for me when it comes to Toku. I dig the score too, so props to whoever handled the musical aspect of the show. But yeah, unfortunately, for me I'd put Dino Fury somewhere towards the bottom for me when it comes to Ranger seasons. Will I still be doing a breakdown/review of my favorite episode like I did for all of the other seasons? Yeah, of course. Will I still watch Cosmic Fury? Yes, but rather cautiously this time around in comparison to the optimism that I typically have when it comes to almost anything Power Rangers related. In the end, Dino Fury had some good stuff going for it, but it really fumbled in alot of the ways that usually make the franchise great for me. Such a shame. |
Dino Fury Pre-Show Preamble "Confused" was the word I used to describe the general feeling of Beast Morphers. "Conflicted" is the word that I'd use to describe the overall feeling I get during an average episode of Dino Fury. It's so weird to me, because this is the first full on Hasbro production in the franchise, and yet it still feels as though there's two conflicting parties on how the show should be handled. On the one hand you have a side that's trying its best to embrace the inherently campy and silly nature of the franchise with funny dialogue and situations that feed off of character humor, whereas on the other side there seems to be those who want to try and cover up those aspects with leaves and feathers or are otherwise doing some of the more outlandish things out of obligation. Scenarios such as body swaps being just sort of glossed over whereas such a plot in any other season would be seen as an easy way to have some fun with its cast. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing inherently wrong with wanting the show to be more story and/or character focused, but in my eyes it's more often than not done in such a messy way that the writing really isn't up to snuff and almost makes it seem like the show is ashamed of it itself, if that makes any sense. Add onto that how this show has a really weird trend of making characters apologize for things that really aren't their fault and it made it really hard for me to pick a favorite episode; With the end result being that I like alot of certain key aspects but never once looking at an episode and going "Oh yeah, this one 100% works for me." Thus my choice of episode ends up being moreso one that stuck out more in my memory compared to others, rather than feeling that it reached any sort of great heights, and I could easily see me changing my mind on what I consider my favorite episode later on down the line. But for now, the episode I've decided to do my highlight on is... Episode 8: Unexpected Guest Kelson Henderson is always awesome. While the Rangers are distracted defeating another Sporix Beast, Void Knight utilizes a new monster known as Wolfgang, whose howl has the ability to dismantle every Ranger weapon, including the Zords. Meanwhile, Mick from Ninja Steel makes his way to Earth, tracking the Ninja Nexus Prism. He attempts to enlist the help of the Dino Fury team, but Zayto(for some reason) is skeptical and blows Mick off, citing they have their own problems to deal with. Zayto apparently speaks for the team as a whole, because no one really objects to his decision. Taking the investigation into his own hands, Mick causes antics around BuzzBlast, and as it turns out, Void Knight wants the Prism too. Ignoring the fact that I'm one of the few people who legit loves Ninja Steel and that this serves as the crossover episode of the season, this bit of the episode really highlights why I chose this episode as my favorite: Its one of the few episodes that isn't afraid to have fun with itself, with alot of the humor and fun coming from Mick's' antics and dialogue with the other characters across the episode. That's the power of Kelson, I guess. He also, somehow, has a physical copy of the Legendary Ranger Database, but don't worry about that. Mick decides to stick with Solon to try and find a way to counter Wolfgang's' howl, while the Rangers work to find the Nexus Prism. Mick and Solon's' interactions are really on point and never failed to put a smile on my face. Not so much when it comes to the Rangers interactions with the Prism. Zayto reads the Prism's' mind to discover that the Morphin' Masters are not only a thing, but that they're responsible for the forging of many a Ranger power source across the years. And really, the entire sequence comes across as something more to serve towards the older audience rather than any new viewers or even the Ranger team in-universe. Because at no point does anyone really ask "What the heck is a Morphin' Master?" Everyone just sorta rolls with it, and in hindsight, it sets an unfortunate precedent for episodes to come. Anyway, this leads into the fight scene of the episode, with the day only being saved thanks to Mick, who, with Solon's' help, made a candy that alters Wolfgang's' voice so the Sporix Beast can't howl anymore once Wolfgang has eaten it. And all this while funny banter from the villains never once lets up. Needless to say, Wolfgang and Boomtower(yeah he's here too) grow giant to even the odds. ...Where'd his tooth go? The giant monster battle in and of itself is pretty solid, and features a surprisingly brutal finish to Wolfgang via impalement. Mucus makes off with Boomtowers' Sporix, but the Rangers manage to secure Wolfgang's' as well as the safety of the Ninja Nexus Prism, which proceeds to fly off into the unknown reaches of space. All in all the day has been saved. Void Knight isn't too happy though. Bemoaning how the energy of the Sporix isn't powering his mysterious machine fast enough. But it's also here where the plot gets a very big revelation. This entire time, Void Knight's' goal has been to use the Sporix energy to revive his love, who is in critical condition. Which makes alot of sense, as throughout the show Void Knight has never once attacked any innocents directly and has primarily been focused on the sole mission of finding the remaining Sporix, ontop of alot of the conflict of the show being focused entirely on the Rangers directly due to them continuing to get in his way. This twist turned Void Knight, a character who I was already digging, into one of my favorites of the season. In the end though, focus goes to the Rangers, with a funny bit of them eating the prototype candies that Mick and Solon made. And to Zayto's' credit, he does apologize to Mick for Mick's' poor treatment at the start of the episode. All's well that ends well as Mick catches a Space Taxi, determined to still track down the Prism however he can. Overall, there's a handful of reasons why I chose this as my personal favorite. It fully embraces the fun aspect of the franchise, the one who actually did wrong is the one to apologize and learn a lesson at the end, and there's a great jump forward in the overall story and Void Knight's' character arc. It's just a good time all around, and I'm hard pressed to think of another episode that accomplishes all of that in either of the seasons. Good stuff. After-Show Bonus Listen to the podcast rewatch with Me, Name, and En-chan HERE. Now that I am for all intents and purposes caught up with Power Rangers, I have a special project planned. Stay tuned. |

Just got done reading Power Rangers Universe, and overall I felt it was decent.
Similar to Edge of Darkness, the book's' main advertising point is revealing the origins of the Phantom Ranger from Power Rangers Turbo. And, well, just like that book, yeah, sure, we do get a bit more details on his background, but not any sort of details that fans as a whole really asking for, I feel. And like in that book, he's more used as a vehicle for showcasing other characters. Which is where I feel the book falls kinda short? The first two chapters especially... it was hard for me to digest exactly was what going on and who was who at first. I feel like the story overall could've used one extra issue/chapter to really flesh these characters out, especially given they're the Morphin' Masters and all. But, thinking of it in terms of a prequel action movie/special, the story does its job well enough, and although not under my own ideal terms, it is cool to finally see where the Dairanger suits come from, even if it still doesn't really explain their use in Super Mega Force. I did like specific origins of Phantom Ranger's' suit though. A neat explanation for why it's so unique looking. Anyway yeah, overall the story was fine for what it was, and if you're at all interested, the yeah, check it out. |
