You're expecting them to make a hardcore cynical choice in a very idealistic show. |

Changeman 02. Between the hilarious homoeroticism and the genuinely fantastic villains. This is developing as an enjoyable series.
The fact the villains actually have a reason to fight, beyond 'take over the earth defeat the sentai'. It's just a very progressive, really interesting dynamic for the villains. Shame they undermined the reveal by having the slitheen looking dude piss himself. The heroes are where this show falls flat. The only time they are out of suit is for more action sequences, and since they refer to one another as their Ranger names when transformed (which is for the majority of the episode) I couldn't even tell you who the actual Rangers are. Obviously it's like thirty years old and we should keep that in mind, but it's just really awkwardly put together. If they don't have the budget to do something, don't do it, don't just awkwardly edit around it and hope no one would notice. It's edited so poorly in places, it actually borders on incoherent. There is also just the usual trippy shit you get in classic sentai, which I've never been a huge fan of. Like the "life draining mansion" which is just a single, very small room, with a bubble machine in it, a few tubes and some ripped plastic sheets. Or the general who is female but has a deep male voice poorly dubbed over her footage. But we're all here for the gay. |
Jetman 1 and 2
So far, Jetman started out pretty well. It was funny that only Red is one of the well-trained guys that were supposed to be the heroes, while the others were some random people hit by the birdonic waves. The cast seems like a likeable bunch, even though Gai is being an idiot atm. So far, my favorite is Ako though. The action looked pretty cool (except for the wires. I mean, they had a higher budget then Zyuranger and you still see those at some point!), especially when they used their wings- I love the Jetman suits. I'm still a bit cautious though, because it's an Inoue series. That guy better surprises me positively for once this time... or else! |

More Jetman! Episode 32!
This was a rather tragic arc for Ryu, and I enjoyed that his overcoming his issues wasn't just him screaming "BUREIVU" and the problem being solved. It made Ryu out to be rather weak in mind after having Rie return, however brief it was. It didn't shy away from making Ryu seem pitiful during his breakdown, and I loved it. Speaking of, his breakdown was also rather good. It wasn't the cliche "Scream to the heavens" style that I'm rather used to seeing, but more subdued, with him even hallucinating. Gai showed more of his true colors this episode as well, fighting Raita after he insulted Ryu, pulling a cliche (But still nice) "Only I can be the one to ____ him!" line. He also calls him the best of them, and it was overall a fun experience to see Gai in his more vulnerable state again. I think if I had any qualms, it'd be the demons lasting about as long as Juuza, disappointingly. It made it hard to stay invested as they were gone just as soon as they showed up. |
More Jetman! More weapons in their arsenal! More toys on the shelves!
Kind of unfortunate the episode itself was kind of subpar. Adhesion Cockroach wasn't really all that terror inducing, the civilian actors were terrible, and Mika was content shooting for average in her performance. Gai and Ryu now being buddy buddy makes Gai seem like a waste of time now. I know I wasn't very happy with Gai being the kind of guy to get in your face simply for being in the same room as him, but it was something. With him now being so friendly, it seems his only character trait is gone and he seems bland. And now the episode where Ryu turns traitor. I know how it was gonna play out from the very get go, but I am glad the entire team wasn't in on the plan until the end. I was really hoping for Ryu to actually turn for the sake of saving Rie, but the traitor episode never really does anything new... |
Watched the first nine episodes of Carranger. I'm enjoying them, but after that Gokaiger tribute, it's kind of a shock that this series isn't as outright wacky as I thought it would be. It's somehow more subdued AND more bizarre than ToQger all at once. Like...it's absurd but not wacky, if that makes ense.
And hell, nine got pretty sad and had a badass moment where Kyosuke faced down Zelmonda (that's the name of Elgar;'s counterpart, right?). Speaking of Zelmonda, despite his goofy moments, it is WEIRD how much more of a threat he seems than Elgar. And Zonette...her existence makes me question if this was supposed to be a kid's show at times. I'm not gonna complain in this case though. I REALLY like how the Bowzack need a stupidly specific kind of candy in order to grow giant. They've already played wth that a lot early on and I hope they continue to do it later. The ranger,s I don't have much to say about them at the moment. They're all competent enough...well, most of the time. They're also all kind of morons, which I like. My favorite episode so far was the one where Blue thought they all hated him. That whole weird car wash technique he used to stop his teammates from becoming so fat they'll explode was...yeah. Kind of amazing. So yeah I like it so far. Bizarre...but not satisfyingly bizarre enough. |
Jetman!
There have been dumb episodes, but this one...Yeah. This one just felt like a waste of time. Literally the only reason why I watched it was because last episode's "Next time" sequence spoiled an important part of the episode that I was curious over how it would come to be. Oh well. It was an episode that heavily featured Vyram that didn't consist of Ryu screaming "RIE!" for twenty straight minutes, so that was nice. But outside of the last minute, there really wasn't much else to this episode. I liked Ant Bazooka's design, but like all good monsters, it only appeared for, like, 2 minutes before getting axed off... Oh well. At least next episode looks decent. |
Carranger 10, 11, 12
My small complaints before seem to have faded away, 'cause these three eps were JUST as goofy as I was expecting. I'm not even sure what to say about it at this point. This show is just so weird... Signalman is pretty amazing too. I laughed way harder than I should have at the whole seat belt gag flashback Gynamo had. |
Is Carranger fully subbed now then or something?
|
Haro is up to 28, and has been pretty good at getting new episodes out guite regularly

I just started watching Gobusters yesterday and I love it. It doesn't feel as formulaic as some Super Sentai series. It feels a little different because you don't have the Monster of the Week grow in size. It's weird hearing them use Power Ranger terms like "Let's Morphin'" and "Megazord". Gobusters is one of the rare cases where I like Red Ranger. He's rash, but at the same time he can be serious. It's an odd balance that works for me.
I'm sorry if this is the wrong place, but do you guys have any suggestions on which Super Sentai I can show to my little cousin? She's 9 years old and she loves watching Power Rangers, so I thought maybe I can introduce 1 episode to her and see how it goes. She likes watching shows that has a lot of fighting and action, but she likes them to be funny as well. So I was thinking of showing her Hurricanger or Carranger. What do you guys think? |
I think if fun is your aim, Kyoryuger is probably the way to go. On a pure entertainment level Kyoryuger is one of the best.

I'm also watching Kakuranger and a couple Rider series as well, so it's not like I'm speeding through Carranger at the moment anyway an. And speaking of Kakuranger...I watched the first three eps. It's like Japan saw what MMPR was doing and decided to make their own series featuring teenagers with attitude. Except these kids actually DO have attitude compared to most of the Might Morphin' rangers. Interesting to see that monsters were unleashed in this series due to the ranger's own foolishness...well at least Sasuke and Saizou's. Luckily they owned up to it. I liked how they couldn't fight as well as Tsurihime in the beginning. Usually Sentai/Power Rangers has new rangers able to fight instantly. I don't know what to say about the narrator guy. He lies somewhere between annoying and stupidly funny. I also like how they're ninja ancestors just sorta show up to give them advice. Also interesting is to how all the monsters of the week correspond to mythological yokai and such. Gives the show an interesting twist. It's weird seeing the ones I recognize from MMPR, like the cab monster, though. Haha, so Jiraiya's actor really IS American, then? It's really weird seeing a ranger in a Sentai series speak almost entirely in English. This team dynamic is going to be really interesting. I also like how they introduce the full team over the course of three episodes. Interesting set up. This show is 80s/90s as hell though. This is the ranger team that'd feel right at home hanging out with the Ninja Turtles and not just because they're both ninjas haha. Another interesting thing is how the first zords they get are the last zords the MMPR rangers get with their ninja powers. Wonder why they reversed it? |
GUIS is a little strange on KakuRanger. Last year they said they were going to have the whole series subbed by the end of 2013 and now it is five months into 2014 and they still have 6 episodes left. I don't know what happened, but they were releasing like one episode every week and then suddenly it was 2-3 months of nothing out of the blue.
BTW, KakuRanger would have been planned far before MMPR even hit the airwaves. |
More Jetman!
Tran grew up in the last 20 seconds of the previous episode, and now Emperor Tranza is just running a train over everyone. Even Radiguet is bowing down to him after getting his ass kicked. I like Tranza. Outside of his stupid outfit, he's pretty cool. He's a threat without being facepalmingly stupid, which I enjoy. |

So, just saw the Neo Jetman arc of the show.
I liked it because it was charming and seeing a terrible person get their comeuppance is always nice, but I also disliked it because it played out exactly how I anticipated. It didn't throw me for a loop or catch me off guard once. Heartless commander who only cares about the mission? Check. Replacement team that are a group of complete assholes until the last second where they become decent people? Check. Replacement team's only experience being simulations and they fail when placed under a real scenario? Check. It seemed everything in these episodes were completely cookie cutter. They were still nice episodes, however, and Gai's abrasiveness seems to actually be integrated into his character, and not just present when it needs to be, which is good, too. It would've been neat for the Neo Jetman to be hinted at before their debut, but meh, I'm fine with how it was. Meteor BEM was kind of confusing, however. One fight he's no selling everything the Jetmen threw at him and was only hurt by the Neo Jetmen, but the next he's no selling everything the Neo Jetmen hit him with... EDIT More Jetman! Tranza built a robot. It sucked. Grey sympathized with it. It died. Tranza built a 2nd robot. It sucked less, but Radiguet interfering gave the rangers the chance they needed to defeat it. |
So Tranza's mind got destroyed after getting his ass whooped. While he was interesting, I can't really say much of him other than his downfall was his own dumbass fault. He was kind of asking for Radiguet to betray him with his constant threats and bullying.
Anyway, the episode itself was kind of neat, showing how far Radiguet is willing to go for his own gain, as well as showing that he knows the bigger threat when he sees it. I liked the stalker portion with Tranza and the Jetmen. It was tense and didn't drag on too long. Anyway, with Tranza now mentally dead, then there were 3. Next episode is a Maria episode, so I'm not sure what's going to happen, but Radiguet is probably insane at this point. EDIT. And then there were 2. Maria is gone now since Radiguet is a sore loser. That was a rather touching scene, and having Ryu break down like that showed how much she meant to him. It was nice, and having Grey plead to the Jetmen was a nice scene as well. |
So Matrix...how about that Jetman?

Jetman really was a different beast compared to more recent series.
I'm not sure how to properly word my feelings on the series. On the one hand, it was handled well. The characters weren't just pastiches of popular character archetypes. On the other, it clearly didn't have much idea of what to do with the characters. Ako and Raita suffered the most, as they rarely got to do much of anything. Kaori wasn't far behind as, despite being in the center of a love diamond, it seemed that was her only relevant point. I understand that, with 5 main characters, something has to give, but even the two "Main" characters, Gai and Ryu, seem to get shafted. Unlike other shows, where the characters are fighting each other for screen time, it seemed the characters were fighting the love triangle so they could stay relevant. So if there was one point of contention to bring up, it'd be, without a doubt, that love triangle. It took up so much time, characters (Notably Gai and Kaori) soon became defined not by their actions or any character arcs, but by the triangle. Inner conflicts stemmed not from Gai's abrasiveness, but because the triangle interfered again. That triangle ate up screen time and the story hardly advanced because of it. The characters didn't grow, no true feelings were actually revealed, it was just drama for drama's sake. However, love wasn't a completely negative aspect. Ryu desperately holding onto Rie was something I greatly enjoyed. It was very much a tragic story arc and I loved how it progressed. I enjoyed Ryu breaking down mentally multiple times. It showed a growth in his character, ironically by having him suffer through the same issue multiple times. Ryu's problem wasn't magically fixed after the first encounter, and his learning to let go was a character arc that ran through the entire series. For the others, it was adequate. Ako, unfortunately, didn't have much of a story. She got, like, 3 episodes to herself, and then she was just background noise. Raita didn't fare much better, but he made a note for himself by standing out. I found Raita focused episodes to be more fun and endearing, such as when his childhood crush returned for a visit. Kaori...Kaori...For a character so central to the story, she didn't get to do much. By being defined by the love triangle, she never got much opportunity to grow. Her actions pertained to trying to get Ryu or stringing Gai along before she finally got into a solid relationship. Speaking of, Gai was a character that took some time to like. Starting off nearly as unlikable as the villains before finally showing his heart and being a true hero. Gai constantly being at odds with Ryu early on was actually rather interesting. They worked together perfectly, but they were just as willing to choke each other out on a moment's notice. Gai's eventual respect for Ryu was also interesting in how it was applied, being very much in a "You were the best of us" manner. For the villains, I felt they were all pretty good. Well, decent, rather. Radiguet was a decent main villain, and his brief time spent as a human before turning back was great. It's a shame he forgot about it in the span of 30 seconds and never brought it up again. He was insane and heartless, as any villain should be, but the problem was that it was taken too far. I understand his pride stopped him from getting the easy kills, but after a certain point, it's just kind of dumb how far he's willing to go just to make sure he was absolutely the one to kill the Jetman. Maria wasn't anything special, unfortunately. She didn't get to do much and only seemed to exist for Ryu and the final 4 episodes. Grey was an interesting beast. I liked him because of his mysterious tendencies and calm demeanor, and, surprisingly, grew to like him as the series went on and got to learn more of him. It was ironic that the robot was the most human of the bunch, and it made Grey just so much more interesting because of it. Tran/Tranza, despite being a major player, really wasn't much of a mover. He was a larger threat, yet he failed just as often as the others. He was just...There. Not doing anything truly major until he unveiled his own giant robot. Outside of the characters, the story proper was...Well, kind of dull. I absolutely loved Ryu's breakdown, I found the power shift with the villains after Tran going through puberty to be interesting, and I found Gai's downfall after being rejected by Kaori to be rather moving. However, it seemed there were a lot of story elements, but no true over arcing story beyond "Good guys fighting bad guys," making it hard to actually care. However, ultimately, I enjoyed Jetman. It was a decent series with some great and memorable characters. From Ryu fighting to let go of Rie to Gai's death, Jetman was very much a series that followed the mentality of "Not all stories have a happy ending." I think, if I were to rate it, it'd definitely go above Megaranger, but below Kakuranger. |
Meh, that is nothing new for Sentai though. Most of the time only three members of an entire team are every truly developed.
Jetman is in my top 10 favorite Sentai series. Probably number 8 or 9, but there are series I do find better than it (Kaku being one of them). |
