I thought Jetman was a really, really good show, but I'm not sure it ever lived up to all of its hype for me. It's probably in my top five Sentai series, but I do agree with a lot of Matrix's points and there are definitely other Sentais that I like more (Dekaranger, obviously, and Gokaiger, most definitely, but possibly Zyuranger, too).

I'm currently watching the following SUPER SENTAI SERIES:
Goggle V Changeman Dairanger Megaranger Timeranger Gaoranger Hurricanger Abaranger Dekaranger Gokaiger ToQGer |

Everyone on this forum is making Kakuranger sound great, the first episode didn't really sell it for me though. Was that the case for everyone else? Because if it took a while to warm up for all of you maybe I should give it another go, especially as I need a new show to replace Decade.

Kakuranger is very much tongue in cheek, and gleefully doesn't take itself seriously. So if you want a more comedic series, I'd recommend giving it another chance (At least up to episode 3 so you can see the whole cast together), but if you're wanting something more serious, Kakuranger isn't going to scratch that itch. |

Part of the reason why Kakuranger kept my interest for so long was that asides from Tsuruhime, most of the rangers weren't quite ninja material. The closing song of dancing minions was also what kept me into the series XD. The song is really catchy. |

Goranger Episode #3.
It's so good to finally be able to see where it all started. Some comedy - seriously, Yellow, lay off the curry, and pay your curry tab. Lots of gore - people die a bleeping lot in the early Sentai series. I love this series, and can't wait to see more. |
Watched Ohranger again.
|
If you dont mind me asking, who has ohranger subbed and did they do all the eps?
|
Should I give Boukenger another shot? Watched 3 eps of it about 2 months ago, but stopped.
|
I watched the Kyoryu VS Go-Bus movie last night. It was so much fun! I enjoyed all the references.

With the release of more Liveman V2s, I decided to start rewatching it again. So onwards I go with episode three, the episode where Obler proves to the world he is totally and utterly nuts in the most glorious of ways.
The Kaijin look really cheaply thrown together in this show, and this is only made worse by how dated this all feels now, but despite that I do really like the designs and the focus on horror over comedy. I really do like the hero designs too, you find a lot of suits from this era are just sorta bland, but the Liveman are simple but still well designed just like a lot of their equipment. Plus, despite being dated, it doesn't take away from the fact that the fight scenes are really well done and hold up on the strength of the ideas going into them. It helps that the Livemen are really great characters too. I've got a Super Live Crush on Megumi. |
Having not seen Liveman, I must say that I absolutely love the suits designs. I have no idea what it is in specific, but they look great.
What do the V2's improve over the original release and should I wait for a full batch of them or are the original releases decent enough? |

While the V2s are much better quality picture-wise the originals are perfectly watchable, so if you're eager to dive in now I recommend them.
Also, Megumi is indeed awesome. |
I left it so long I actually don't remember a lot of the middle of Liveman so it's even more exciting to get them in better quality.
|
Alrighty. I'll give the originals a watch then!

I personally think a lot of showa toku is rubbish, from ultra low budgets, to terrible writing and terrible acting. There is a difference between being dated and just shit. Obviously there are exceptions, but most of the "classics" I've watched for Rider or Sentai have been utterly dreadful. In my opinion of course. So it really surprised me how ahead of its time Liveman felt, and how much I remember utterly enjoying it. It doesn't really fit with a lot of the shows around it, since it has epic, imaginative action, great designs and memorable characters. |

Additionally, Liveman was, like, the 10th Sentai, so it had the common formula already set up from it's predecessors that it could either improve upon or alter entirely, and with Maskman's success, it had the room to take a chance. Oh, and downloading the first 29 episodes of Liveman now. |
Locke have you seen Skyrider episode 1? That's some awesome stuff right there.

Kakuranger 4-6
Jiraiya speaking in English most of the time will be forever hilarious and weird. I'm loving how after nearly every episode the narrarrator disucsses how much these guys hate eachother. They do argue and make fun of eachother a lot, but otherwise they're a pretty decent team. Not much else to say, these were pretty enjoyable episodes. Carranger 13-15 Signalman continues to be amazing. The best part is how he just stands outside his police box, waiting for something to happen with his arms folded behind his back. Just waiting for anybody to come by for him to harass about traffic violations... The episode about the lightning god guy was pretty fun too. The whole eel bit and tricking Minoru into eating it to lose his fear of lightning was amazingly stupid in the best way. And Zonette falling in love with Kyosuke is probably where the Carranger tribute on Gokaiger got some of it's inspiration from. That cockroach monster is my favorite Carranger monster so far....I loved that the entire zord fight with him was just massively pointless. |
Liveman 04.
This episode does some great things, firstly it provides us with villains who actually have a genuine plan with a level of threat to it - even if Transmission Brain looked derpy as FUCK. Then there is the fact that Megumi proves herself the smartest, most grounded member of her team. Are you feeling okay Japan? The only real criticisms with the episode, is that although the action has held up on the strength of the ideas, it felt like this episode was really powering through and there really wasn't enough going on to warrant the show rushing about like it did. |

Liveman 05. I seriously fucking love this show, it's really hard to talk about because there is honestly very few flaws to really discus.
The Livemen are both great characters, but also prove to you why they are the heroes. Yusuke and Jo are such bafoons, but they are so loveable and badass and Megumi is just... *_* Their suits and their vehicles all look great, and it's made even better because they personally made them. I don't even mind their mecha, as this was the day and age where the giant robots actually looked like robots. Meanwhile as goofy as the villains are, and as much as they are victim to the shows age, these are also sentai villains from an age where shows were allowed to be much more explicit in their darker parts so they are just great. From the human machine-gun Mazenda, to shoujo werewolf Kemp and finally the operatically insane Obler who gave up his humanity in the belief that being a monster is the ultimate evolution for humankind, they are just great. Even Gush is memorable, he does nothing, but he looks so damn cool doing it I love him all the same. Plus the monsters of the week all look great, all designed from interesting meshes of technology and organic monster parts. |
Dammit, I need to get on those Liveman episodes I downloaded...

Liveman 06.
This show can be so ahead of its time and so incredibly dated within the same sequence. This was a difficult watch, even with some nice character moments spotted throughout. |
Liveman 07.
This episode was worth sitting through for the moment where Kemp beats the shit out of our heroes using hearts he winked from his eye, and a rainbow. It's fucking awful the rest of the time though. |
Watched the first episode of Goranger and really enjoyed it. The Black Cross Army are some really cool villains and I liked the whole set up this show has. The characters are all pretty likeable and Hiroshi Miyauchi looks like he just walked off the set of Kaiketsu Zubat :lol
Since this show came out in 1975 it got a really big budget and that shows. The action scenes and miniatures look incredible in this show and I gotta say I dig the material the suits are made off. They feel heavy and alot more like a military uniform and less like the typical sentai outfits we have today. Cant wait to dive deeper into this one :D |
Gonna start up Kakuranger soon. Looks fantastic.
