Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket
I finished this earlier today and I must say, I very much enjoyed it. With it being more realistic it immediately gets my interest, since that is what I prefer when Gundam shows focus on wars. What drives it home is how much it focuses on informing Alfred and the viewer just how bad war can be, regardless of the side. Having the main character be a kid helped since well, as kids we just never thought about it that much. We just knew wanted to see fights and wins, we never thought about the downside to it. This, coupled with Al's lack of knowledge and willingness to do what he does blindly just makes it work. Plus with the show's first half being very slow and warm and then turning into chaos in episode four, it really drives home how messed up those situations can be and the reality of what it means to be a soldiers sometimes. Plus it being centered mostly on Zeon gives it a nice bit of originality, to me at least. The animation date shows, but it is still pretty good, with the mech designs being pretty good as well, with the Kampfer pretty much stealing the show. For me though, the music is one of the best parts besides the story. Just 80s epic gloriousness. Overall, I found WITP to be a very good little series. On a critiquing basis I thought it hit it pretty darn well and on a personal basis it's nice to have another Gundam product that I actually like since most of the franchise bores the shit out of me. I'd watch this again any day. |
Here's the Thunderbolt trailer:

Enough people are working on it at the very least. I'd rather have Zoids though. Animals shapes would be far more practical in real life. |

Spent Thanksgiving putting together my Gundam The End. For a mech with so much going on design-wise, he's surprisingly functional. Everything from his shield cloak to his hands get out of the way of his poseability extremely well.

That is one awesome design! I like it!

So with Vertical wrapping up putting out the Origin this year, I kind of expect an avalanche of Gundam manga to get translated, kind of like what we are getting now from rightstuf.
Is there any manga in particular you guys would want to see translated? I'd be down for Thunderbolt, SEED Astray and anything relating to Crossbone (including F90). |

I don't have anythign against translating adaptations of already existing anime (Zeta, CCA, Wing, e.t.c.) But we kinda need some original stuff. I've been reading up on manga on Gundam wiki, and there's one that is about an assasination plot against Gihren Zabi. Would defintley read that and could make for an interesting OVA series if it's good. |
gundam wing frozen tear drop comes to mind.
Other than ghat, tge huild fighters manga comes to mind. I know someone is already translating Amazing but id love to know what Hono and D are about too. |

I started watching Turn A today and it's pretty good. I'm really digging the aesthetic of the world, with it being a cross of late 1980s/early 1900s and futuristic. The animation is nice as well. Honestly the look of the show reminds me a lot of the Ghibli stuff for some reason. Maybe it is because of the aesthetic and the colors of the show.
Story is alright and the characters are as well. The MS designs are rather interesting to say the least. I'm enjoying it so far, but it is mostly more for the animation and look of the show than the story or characters so far. |
Turn A is the real oddball of Gundam (Not say that's a bad thing). For me it reminds me more of the late 70's early 80's really out there Sci'Fi anime.

People when they talk about this series they talk about that "Tomino was at the right age to make this" and "muh artistry". When I think of artistic anime, I think of stuff like Studio Gihibli. There's sort of a whimsical and age transcending charm to it you know? I don't get that with Turn A. It looks like it would since it does have some of those Gihibli influences but to me it doesn't show through. |
