Zi-O: I cared about like three people by the end.
Hug: I was invested in pretty much everyone except like... Two characters. Out of 10+. And I remember them all. That's pretty impressive for a show. tl;dr ohma was right, president cry was not |

Definitely not villain-wise, from what I've heard. Cry may have skimped on really addressing why he believed what he did, even if we only got hints, but he's a hell of a lot more involved than something like Pierrot.

WARNING! If you are especially squeamish, then this series probably isn't for you! This watch is gonna be a bit of a new experience for both me and the people who are reading/watching along. Why? Well, because I actually had zero idea that Iczer-1 had a dub until now. So I figured, hey, why not watch that version when doing these write-ups? I'm usually on the Dub side of Dub vs Sub anyway. And just to get it out of the way here and now, the dub ain't bad! While I do prefer the sub, I wouldn't blame anyone for preferring the dub and choosing it when watching this OVA. But again, if I had to choose a winner, this is one of the fews times I'd side with a sub. Anyway, what even is Iczer? Well, the premise is that a group of evil aliens known as the Cthulu(Cthuwulf in the dub) are making their way to Earth to raze the planet and take it for themselves. They do this by sending out paraistes known as Venoms, which can take possession of just about anything. A human, a house, you name it! They are lead by Big Gold, pictured below. Beating them to Earth though is Iczer-1(the blonde girl in pink shown at the start of this post); a defector from the group who wishes to find a "partner" to synchronize with, so she can attain great power and put a stop of the tyranny of the Cthuwulf. The person inwhich she feels the strongest for being a green haired girl named Nagisa, who for all intents and purposes, is just your average everyday teenager. Now right off the bat, lemme just inform you all that there is alot to this show that I cannot possibly screencap for use here, because uh, let's just say I'm not in the interest of getting banned from TokuNation currently. Something that really sets Iczer apart from other Toku-esque anime is its very grotesque and creepy imagery. And while yeah, there's gore to be had, the OVA manages to get the creep factor in in a handful of other ways too, of which I appreciate. Here, have what I hope can be one of the few samples of such: So what's up with the first episode specifically? Well, honestly, it's very much the "First Act" of Iczer-1, in that it's mainly all setup. And really, the OVA right out the gate lets you know what you're in for with its opening scenes: That being Iczer-1 herself blasting a Venom to chunky salsa and two of the Cthuwulf generals, Cobalt and Sepia, having a lesbian make-out session. And before you ask, yes, all of the Cthuwulf are named after colors. Heck, one of their heads is named Sir Violet. Inwhich case, by the way, is Iczer a color? If anyone knows that lemme know, because I'm curious. Anyway, as far as setup episodes go, yeah, this is pretty good. You have some pretty solid atmosphere throughout, you get the baseline of what's up with our characters, the action is pretty good and very sci-fi(Iczer-1 herself wielding a lightsaber and shooting energy rays while fighting inside of a pocket dimension), and all the poor trauma that befalls Nagisa with all of the sudden bio-horror that enters her life. I think the part I like best about that is that Nagisa isn't ready to just jump into action immediately with all that's going on. She's scared out of her wits, and it's only with the promise of vengeance that she's able to get it together to help Iczer-1 in her plight. Of which, oh yeah, I did say that this OVA was part mecha, did I not? Meet Iczer Robo, which is piloted both by Iczer-1 and Nagisa. Iczer-1 being the one controlling it and Nagisa being the power source. The fight against the enemy mecha known as Delos Theta(piloted by Cobalt) is a pretty good sequence, and has some kickin' music behind it to boot. And that about covers it! It's a good setup that immediately presents some high stakes, good animation, and an all around interesting experience. But we'll be getting into the real meat to this thing in the next episode. |
Act-II: The Challenge of Iczer-Sigma "It's for your protection." Anyway, the title of this episode is basically clickbait before clickbait was even a thing, because Iczer-Sigma is barely in it. Instead, there are three main focuses to this episode: Sepia seaking revenge for Cobalt's' death, Iczer-1 trying to infiltrate Big Gold's' fortress to stop the Cthuwulf, and Nagisa bonding with a little girl she meets named Sayoko. The action in this episode is swift, but well directed with some great shots. The horror elements, while a bit more downplayed than the previous episode, still serve their purpose as a vehicle in helping Nagisa's' character development, and the personal stakes everyone gains in the conflict is a good step forward. The thing that is probably gonna stand out to most viewers though is the creation of Iczer-2, the "sister" of Iczer-1; Created from Iczer-1's' combat data and designed to kill Iczer-1 and be Sepia's' new partner. And yeah, she certainly makes quite the impression with her great combat skills and honorable, yet sadistic personality. Oh, and if you were wondering what Iczer-Sigma looks like, here: And while Iczer-2 is great and all, I think the aspect I liked most in this episode was Nagisa's' development in gaining her own resolve. Going from a frightened everyday girl to someone who finds something she wishes to protect. She certainly doesn't like the situation she's in, but she realizes that she needs to work with Iczer-1 if there's to be any hope for not just herself, but the people she cares about too. This is all highlighted really well with her giving Sayoko the bracelet that has been protecting Nagisa for the majority of the episode. The next episode is the conclusion to the first entry in this series, but not the end of the posts. There's still a solid bit to go! |
Act-III: The Final Chapter Fittingly enough for the climax, this is the episode where everything goes crazy. The backstory of the Cthuwulf is revealed: They're a race of humanoid aliens who lost their home world, and have been traveling the universe for years in search of a new home. Unfortunately for them, they one day came across Big Gold, who proceeded to possess Sir Violet and began turning the once peaceful people into a group of conquerors. Meanwhile in real time, while Iczer-Sigma initially has the upper hand on Iczer-Robo, it's clear that the two philosophies on partnership are completely different between the two groups of pilots, and the synchronization between Iczer-2 and Sepia is thrown off entirely when Iczer-2 makes one rather fatal decision when Sayoko runs into the battlefield to cheer Nagisa on. Nobody is pleased by this. Not Sepia, not Iczer-1, and most certainly not Nagisa, who proceeds to make quick work of Iczer-Sigma. Sepia dies in the explosion, but Iczer-2 manages to escape at the last moment. It's here where the OVA starts to make its main theme very clear for those unaware up to now. That being the power of love. Iczer-1 has a talk with Nagisa before the final battle begins, revealing to Nagisa that Iczer-1 is actually an android who is struggling to understand and embrace her own emotions, and confided in Nagisa because she fell in love. Iczer-2, meanwhile, wanting to experience love herself, sets out to capture Nagisa and try to force the girl to be her new partner. While Iczer-2 is successful in capturing Nagisa, Nagisa's' heart belongs to Iczer-1, and in the end, Iczer-2 opts to just have Nagisa possessed(presumably by a venom like Sir Violet). It's also revealed that Big Gold is all kinds of weird to the point that they could've just straight up said he was magic and I would've bought it. So, turns out that Big Gold is actually an ancient machine that was shot into space by humanity a long time ago, and via its travels across the universe it somehow managed to gain possession of alien parasites to experiment on humanoids with, in some demented attempt at understanding human emotion. And in the end Big Gold became some weird alien-computer hybrid... thing. Iczer-1 busts into Big Gold's' fortress to save Nagisa, but it's too late. In a rather tragic moment, Iczer-1 is forced to shoot Nagisa for the good of the planet, and the two share one final, heartfelt goodbye. WHICH THEN CAUSES ICZER-1 TO GO FRIGGEN SUPER SAIYAN! The entire final action sequence is capital A Awesome, by the way! It's got great direction, it's intense, the music is wonderful, and it's all animated absolutely beautifully. The final showdown between Iczer-1 and not just Iczer-2, but also Big Gold is some really great stuff all around. But then we get to ending, and this where things get really trippy. So, in the end, Iczer-1 actually ends up absorbing Big Gold into herself, which then gives her powers over time and space somehow. She uses her newfound power to reset the Earth back to the way it was before the invasion, meaning that Nagisa and everyone else who died at the hands of Big Gold are now alive. And rather than reunite with the one she loves, Iczer-1 instead feels she has a duty to her people, and leads the Cthuwulf on another journey through space to find a planet for them all to inhabit. It's a very somber ending and one that typically leaves viewers conflicted, but I personally feel that it works well enough. Let's just say that the sequel OVA also felt a certain kind of way about how Iczer-1 ended. But we'll get to that in due time. |
Iczer-1: Special Compilation Another thing that I had no idea existed for this franchise until recently was a Compilation Movie version of Iczer-1. And it's almost exactly as one might expect: Just all three episode glued together into one movie. Key word being "almost" though. Had it actually been that I'd say that it'd be the best way to watch Iczer-1. While most of the new stuff is just very minor lines of dialogue to help the transition between each episode be smoother, they make one change that I personally think is rather major: Moving the scene that reveals the origins of the Cthulhu to the very start of the film, and thus removing its status as a twist. So, ultimately, I personally think it's better to watch the show as three separate episodes rather than one hour and a half long film. But, if that change isn't one that you feel would bother you all too much, then yeah, I can easily see people disagreeing and saying that the film version is the best way to go about it. As long as it's being watched, right? Next time, we'll be diving into the sequel. |
Adventure! Iczer-3! Episode-1: Enter, Iczer-3! Just Leave the Earth's' Defense to Me! For those that feel they might not have the stomach for Iczer-1, Iczer-3(or, Iczer Reborn if you're going by the official subs), might be more up your alley. The horror elements are now essentially all gone, the deaths, while still bloody, are alot less gory and graphic(heck, the blood itself is now pink), and there's alot less in terms of full frontal nudity. Iczer-3 focuses almost entirely on action, and is alot less dark than its predecessor. If that sounds as though I'm lambasting this OVA in favor of the previous one, I most certainly am not. It's merely a matter of the fact statement about the sort of content you're getting into as opposed to the previous entry in the franchise. Different flavors, but both entirely enjoyable in their own right to me. So with that out of way, what could a sequel to Iczer-1 even be like? The setup is that, somehow, a fragment of Big Gold escaped being absorbed by Iczer-1 at the end of the first OVA. Her name is Neos Gold, and she actually has a pretty cool design I will admit. She battles Iczer-1, and the fight ends in a draw. Neos Gold escapes, and makes way to lay waste to Earth while Iczer-1 recovers from her wounds. Iczer-1 is too wounded to intercept, so instead the Cthuwulf send out their newest android, Iczer-3, to fight off the threat of Neos Gold in the meantime. And needless to say Iczer-3 isn't anywhere near as mature as what her older sister is. Inbetween all of that though we do get some time to be introduced to what will be our group of heroes for the show. Most notably, Nagisa is here, and she works as a delivery girl for a military base which houses the new space battleship known as the Queen Fuji. This is actually a noticeable shake-up, too. I kinda sorta neglected to mention any of the military forces in the previous write-ups, because honestly, they really did not matter outside of like, one scene. Here though, Iczer-3 is making an effort to give them more focus, and the Queen Fuji being a follow up to the three Fuji ships of Iczer-1 is a nice way to highlight that. All in all this episode really is just all setup with a decent action sequence at the end. Neos Gold's' forces make quick work of most of the Earth's' defenses, leaving only the crew aboard the Queen Fuji to combat the alien threat. And so, we have our grounds for every episode going forward. ...Oh, and Iczer-1 has new duds, too. |
Episode-2: Bug, Bug, Giant Bug! Go Get 'Em, Iczer Robo! While this episode is 90% action, there is a solid step forward in Iczer-3's' character development. Essentially, she needs to learn to work with the crew aboard the Queen Fuji as a team. Sure, she's has good intentions, but her carelessness in how she goes about fighting Neos Gold's' forces gets everyone into alot of trouble. The biggest example being Iczer-3 not understanding that everyone she's working with is human and not a machine, as such they get worn out alot quicker and cannot take nearly as much punishment. Fighting the man-eating insects is nothing for Iczer-3; Not so much for anyone else! In the end, her short-sightedness results in Iczer Robo's' energy core(the Iczerio) getting stolen by Neos, and Nagisa exhausted and hurt. Sure, in terms of story there isn't much, but not only was the action entertaining enough, but I felt the step forward in Iczer-3's' arc was enough to carry the episode. The little bits of character interaction between the rest of the cast was nice to see too. |
This episode was one step forward, one step back. On the one hand, despite having seemed to have learned her lesson the hard way at the end of episode 2, Iczer-3 starts off really ignorant here. As well, the central conflict in her and Nagisa's' partnership really is just glossed over by the end, with everyone just kinda going "Well whatever no big deal I guess." Like, yeah, the Earth is at stake, but a bit more time addressing the problem would've been nice. On the other hand, Bigro, as opposed to Insect and Fiber, gets more characterization than what any of the other villains have gotten so far, the few comedic bits are nice, and the episode itself does serve as a solid transition point into the next act of the story with a really great hook both at the start and at the very end of it. It's the sort of episode that just sort ends up being solid, rather than anything remarkable or terrible, and I'm perfectly fine with that. Not optimal to be sure, but I had a good time watching it. I did also like the hook about Nagisa gaining memories of Iczer-1 though, and the biggest highlight really is the debut of Atros, who really should've been named Iczer-4 since she's clearly inspired by Iczer-2, but whatever. All in all, a decent time. But next episode where things really start to kick into high gear for Iczer-3. |
Episode-4: Yikes! There's Two of Me!? Enter, Atros - The Ultimate Rival!! https://i.imgur.com/2Clk7pj.png This episode 75% high energy action. Taking up the entire first half is the battle between Iczer-3 and Atros, and it makes for a fairly entertaining watch. The best part comes at the end though, where the two are arguing over their outlooks on life, and Nagisa comes in to tip the scales. She manages to see the good in Atros despite everything, which throws Atros through a loop. The second half has to do the final one of Neos' generals: Golem, as well as Neos' plan to bring to life one last warrior for the heroes to face. And dropping all pretense here it is so obviously Iczer-2, especially since she's in the opening. I absolutely adore that this OVA establishes that Iczer-2's' theme song plays in-universe, haha. While the character development does feel a tad rushed, I get it, considering we only have a couple episodes left to go. Plus, if nothing else, seeing the bond between Nagisa and Iczer-3 grow closer was nice, and the few bits with the crew of the Queen Fuji were serviceable in showing how they play off eachother given their current situation. Everything ends with Iczer-3 on the ropes, and Atros having seconds thoughts not only due to Nagisa's' words, but also how Neos Gold is so obviously lying about everything that's going on. What's gonna happen next, I wonder? |
Episode-5: Major Crisis! The Arrival of My Scary Older Sister, Iczer-2!! https://i.imgur.com/U8NcrS2.png This episode drops quite the bomb on us. Turns out that the Nagisa we've been following this whole time isn't actually the Nagisa from Iczer-1, but rather her granddaughter. And while I can kinda get why they decided to go this route, this twist really doesn't work for a multitude of reasons. Like, I'm not even trying to say that a grandchild looking almost exactly like their grandparent is bull, because I'm an example of that. Heck, I'm not even saying that I doubt that Iczer-Robo could house Nagisa's' memories of the past timeline. It's more that Iczer-3's' Nagisa is remembering stuff that her grandmother wasn't even around for. Like, in this episode alone she sees the scene where Iczer-2 got cut down, when Past Nagisa was dead by that point. It also raises the question of where the heck Iczer-1 Nagisa even is and what she's doing. Did she die? Who did she get together with after the events of the first OVA? Is Iczer-3 Nagisa's' friend the granddaughter of Past Nagisa's' friend who got possessed? If Iczer-Robo is still the alter ego of Iczer-1, doesn't that mean it's showing Nagisa Iczer-1's' memories instead? Why am I so caught up in all of this when this is supposed to just be simple fun!? GAAAHH!! But you see none of that matters because Iczer-2 is friggen awesome and she carries this entire episode. I'm serious, she is 100% the highlight here. Sure there's the plot with Golem, but that ultimately goes nowhere despite a hint that even Goldem is getting sick of Neos Gold. Meanwhile, Iczer-2? Still every bit the badass she was in Iczer-1, and it's also shown that her character development from the first OVA wasn't just thrown out; With her playing secret mentor to Iczer-3 and pondering Iczer-1's' outlook on life. This even mirrors the arc that Atros is going through, which is presented well throughout the episode's' run as well. So yeah, this episode isn't anything close to perfect, but they nailed it where it counted, and for that, I give it a pass. Very fun to watch if nothing else. |
Episode-6: Cool! Wild! Outta Sight! The Final Battle of the Iczers!! https://i.imgur.com/5pWjwnR.png That type is certainly worthy of the hype. The only downside really is that Atros has to die for no good reason. Other than that, this was a fun way to end things off. There's the final bout between Iczer-1 and Iczer-2, which results in the return of subspace and Iczer-2 getting a new outlook on life, there's the return of Iczer Robo(even if it doesn't amount to much), and of course, there's the payoff of all three Iczers coming together to take down Neos Gold. It's all very explosive, very fast paced, and most importantly, very fun to see all play out. And really, with how turn-your-brain-off alot of Iczer-3 can be, it's about all I could ask for. Like, sure, I could do a play-by-play of the exact steps that happen in the episode, but really, it all very much speaks for itself and is very much meant to be a ride from start to finish. Not to say there isn't any substance; Afterall, the character arcs of Atros and the Iczers are all very much fully realized, but there really isn't much I could add or highlight that the episode itself doesn't already do a solid enough job doing. Final thoughts post concerning the franchise as a whole should come tomorrow. And all one of you reading this might be asking "But wait, DreamSword, what about Iczer Gal Iczelion?" To which my response would be "What ABOUT Iczelion?" Let's just forget that ever happened. |
FINAL THOUGHTS ON ICZER The Iczer franchise is certainly a unique beast of a franchise, even by the standards of today. What started off a simple H-Manga in Iczer-1 ended up being transformed into a movie that crosses over so many different genres while all falling under the message of how love and emotions bring people together and can get us through our darkest of hours. The closest I can think of to compare Iczer to is stuff like Tekkaman and Detonator Orgun, but even then they really don't hit that same mark. Especially not in terms of graphic content. Iczer-1 is very much made for adults. With brutal fights, plenty of gore, and various body and cosmic horror tropes at play that are very much not kid friendly. But yet, the very blatant Toku elements thrown into it all makes me think that it was made specifically for adults who grew up with Toku and wanted more adult themes out of it. So, in a sense, Iczer-1 was basically GARO before GARO was even a thing. ...Which makes it so interesting and kinda funny to me that its direct sequel, Iczer-3, very much swings in the opposite direction and is very much made with kids in mind. Yeah, it very much has a smaller budget. Yeah, the horror, Yuri, and gory content is very much downplayed. And yeah, its focuses almost entirely on humanoid action with the mecha stuff very much an afterthought. But ya know what? It's still fun in its own regard, and that's all I'm ever asking for. I would be no means say that Iczer-3 is any sort of bad when compared to its predecessor, but a very different flavor. But I will acknowledge that that sort of thing makes for a really tough sell when making a direct sequel, ya know? It kinda reminds me of how R-Rated movies used to get cartoon adaptations back during the 80s. Sure, Iczer-1 is far more "sophisticated" in its content and focuses alot more on character development, but there's something to be said about Iczer-3 knowing exactly what it wanted to do and just gunning for it, simplistic or not. Do I personally think that Iczer-1 is the better of the two? Sure. But again, Iczer-3 was still an overall enjoyable experience for me, and it never felt like a waste of time or a complete betrayal to what came before it. It was clear to me that the people behind Iczer-3 had seen the original, and were trying their best to fit in various aspects that older fans would recognize and appreciate such as subspace and the character development of Iczer-2. Heck, it doesn't stop there for the franchise either. Did you know that there's actually an audio drama where Iczer-1 crosses over with Dangaioh? Odd choice for a crossover to be sure, but should that audio drama ever actually get translated, I'm definitely interested in it! (And no, I will not be covering Dangaioh in this thread, as it is unfortunately not even remotely Toke-like despite having a shout out to Space Sheriff Gavan.) I guess the best way for me to sum this all up is that the Iczer franchise is definitely a unique experience, I'd recommend anyone even remotely interested in it to try it out. In the end, I give Fight! Iczer-1! a 4/6 and Adventure! Iczer-3! a 3/6. Very solid stuff all around. |
DAIKAIJUMAN VS ANIME WORKING TITLE I have returned to hijack this thread once again! Another season, another Toku Anime completed. Spring is the season of romance, and thusly, a romance themed Toku Anime has emerged. "Allow me to explain!" KOI WA SEKAI SEIFUKU NO ATO DE/LOVE AFTER WORLD DOMINATION https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gY2M2sg3p_A Now you've probably already heard of this one, but we're recapping anyway (what's a good anime without recap?). A hero of justice and an evil organization combatant partake in forbidden love. To be fair, this anime does feel more like a romance anime with Sentai as a setting rather than a Sentai romance anime (but you probably already figured that), but I'll talk more on that later. Our story follows Aikawa Fudo, leader of Freezing Sentai Gelato Five, who finds himself falling in love with the Reaper Princess of the evil organization Gekko, Magahara Desumi. Knowing that their love cannot be found by their peers, they are confronted with keeping their relationship a secret, however, that is only so simple, as the two must contend with keeping appearances, dealing with romantic rivals, and learning what a normal couple should act like. It's entertaining, wholesome even, and it uses its theme very well, and much like last season's Kuroitsu-San, has lots of parodies of Tokusatsu and workplace relationship shenanigans, even some Tokusatsu voices in the mix (the narrator is the Kamen Rider W Driver voice and narrator). Again, it's probably something romance anime fans would enjoy more, as the Sentai elements are reserved for the theme, but it works darn well if you ask me. You might also be thinking "that one character in the opening looks yabai," but rest assured, there's rarely any anime fanservice, heck, the beach episode is downright hilarious, and as I said, it's actually pretty wholesome. I'm not a huge romance fan, but I can't deny it was a sweet show that honestly did make me smile (also gave me some good laughs every time I remember they're called Gelato 5 and all the Toku-esque shenanigans), but the thing with me is, I'm fine with whatever so long as I can find enjoyment in it. There's lots of love in this season (of just about all kinds of love) in this season, even with Kaguya-Sama right next to it (seriously, they're right next to each other whenever I go to watch them), it's a fun watch, definitely something romance fans would enjoy, but I'm sure Toku fans would get a kick out of it (I swear Tomokazu Sugita has the best roles in Toku Anime), be it the ridiculous name of the Sentai, or the crazy shenanigans that take place every episode, I enjoyed it, but, as always, it's up to you whether you want to or not. See you in August (or was it July?) for Kamen Rider W: Fuuto Tantei Pi. We're finally here, folks. The first real Kamen Rider anime (I know the Den-O, Zero-One, and chibi Rider specials exist). |

Iczer 2 has the best fights. Don't @ me. Now, it's time:
https://i.imgur.com/N3CGYtd.png I nominate Flamenco for next watch. It's a wild ride. |
I do plan on covering Futo PI!
However, for the first time ever, I'm gonna be watching the show alongside the board each week and giving my thoughts in the corresponding thread. I'll most likely do a final thoughts post here once the first season ends in a few months. But until then, don't expect too much activity from me on covering other Toku anime. That's not to say the thread is dead or on hiatus just yet though, as I do have something else up my sleeve, of which will be starting soon... |
Hello everyone, this is K̸̞̱̊̓̆̈́̉͝ả̶̢̡̤̗̞̟͈̗̣͐͜ͅṃ̷̡̛͖̼̞̘̄̆͂̃͐̚ė̴̡͈̖̜̦͚͉̖̳̫̹̟̔̉̉ņ̸̧͙̹͚̲͎̦̟͎͖̼̋̎̈́͌̾͛͆͆̋̀͛͘͝͝͠ͅ ̸̢̡͓̱̪̯͍̗̱̻͓͐́͝R̷̼̈́̏̎̀̒̂̎̓i̴̢͍̥͇͕͍̋͌͂͐̍̀̈͒̒̔̏͊̋d̴͕̺̼͈̭̖͕̠̈́͗͗͆̐̓̿̕͝͠è̵̡̲̼̳̺̱̰̑̑̒͆̂͛̓́͛̕r̵̢̩̤͇͚̣͐̆͗͠ ̸͔̖̓̃̈́͂̈̀̚̚͝D̴̙͉̹̻̫̪̬͐͋̾͛̒̎̅̐͐̕͝͝͠i̵̡̪̫̒͒̾͒͐̽̔͑̀̅͛e̵͍̩̰͚͖͙̪̞̪̩͉͚̓̔̀̏͛͐̄͜ and this time around I'll be doing something a little unique for this thread!
This time around I'll be covering: And to make things a little bit more interesting I've decided that I will only be updating on Tuesdays, as they are the only day of which I have free, especially since this is Zero-One related and I've given up on that show entirely. Now, unfortunately, I can't review any SO-DO like in M̴̬̪͚̗̙̦̪͚̬̩̈́͘͘͜ȇ̷͖̂̏̔͗̍,̷̖̬̖̠͛ ̶͙̹̞́̉͑̋̏̈̇̽K̶̢͙̫̖̠̗͇̭͕͚̣̳͊̀̋̓ͅͅa̷̛͕̳͍̙̯̲͑̀̔̍͠m̶͚̿͑̋͌̀͑͒͌͘è̴̲̗̩͎͇̀̆͛͛̊̾̍̎͠ṇ̷͚̙̖̥̝̮͙̟̈́̌̿́̈́̇͊ ̵̡̘̼̰̹͔̰̥͇͇̥͚͈͒̋͊̇̀̓́͝Ŗ̷̎́͠ͅḯ̵̜͇̬͋̊̇̾͆͋̍͋͝d̶̟̽̾́͛̇͂̀͐e̷̢̤̮̲͇͎͎͕̔͂̋͛̿͊̄͒̏̐̌̽͘͝͝r̵͓̙͙͂̏ ̴̥̩̙̙̮̪̟̬̙̈́̈́͒̀̎͘D̴̻̦̹̳̺̫̮̣͎̑̒̕͝ͅi̸̧̢̨̜͚̪͔̬̠̼̤̙̯̔̔̅̚e̸̬̼̼̣̘̜̣͆̽̃̐̀͋͆͋͠ͅ'̸͙͙͌̌͛͗̔̑̓̂̓͘͝͠ś̵͈̰̬̣͎͐̽͜'̸̨̥͉͓̱̾͌̌̔̔̑̉͘ Zero-One thread, as I do not collect any figures in that scale, due to deducing that collecting is for nerds and I would never be caught collecting unneeded garbage! Still, I gotta cover these anime shorts, right? This is the Toku Anime thread, and DreamSword has been deemed unfittingly biased for the job. Especially since he dares like nearly every aspect of a TV that's only out to do good in the world. As such this thread is under new, more competent management and will be offering far more in-depth analysis of the source material which actually has some valid thoughts behind it for once. ...What was that? Well anyway, hope you all end up enjoying these shorts as much as I do! Let's dive into... Man, never thought that eating your vegetables would make for some primo comedy, but here we are! This episode takes place during episode 2, and is about Izu giving Aruto a tour of the Hiden Offices. While mostly played for laughs, the episode does serve as a neat little piece of world building, which is something I feel like these shorts in general actually manage to do rather well for the most part. Things come to a hard stop though when the two reach the cafeteria, and Izu informs Aruto of the automated system it runs on: Recommending specific meals to employees based on their dietary habits. The system recommendation for Aruto is Boiled Butterbur Shoot, and it ain't taking no for a answer. And that, ontop of how the building is covered in Mamoru clones, clearly symbolizes how Hiden Intelligence is a stand-in for a totalitarian police state, wherein your free will is taken away and you're forced to become a part of the machine. You can't think, you can't feel. You can only submit yourself to the system or otherwise be disposed of. Izu serves as a brutal enforcer, what with how she outright ignores Aruto's' pleas of ordering something else and makes him eat so many vegetables anyway. This is one of the most depressing pieces of media I've ever seen! But that's kind what makes it so funny. It's not often that spamming something over and over makes a joke land for me, but here, I felt it really worked. The timing was on point and the concept is just so ridiculous in the first place that once the cafeteria was reached, I was laughing the entire time through. Even the credits reel is funny: With Aruto having to each an entire assembly line's' worth of vegetables. Poor guy. Sure, these are clearly no budget and the art style is weirdly reminiscent of Gaia Online, but not only do I find that charming in its own right, the writing really is what carries these. Next up is a short focusing on Fuwa and Yua(the worst, most underdeveloped character in Zero-One). See you next week! |
It may have no budget, but the writing is gold. There's not a lot to this special. Aruto and Humagears goof around the cafeteria and he enjoys butterburs. The art is simple, but expressive when it needs to be and fairly charming. I consider this series of specials the uncontested highlights of Zero One.

Episode 2: Fuwa and Yaiba Get Excited About "That" No, the title isn't referring to "That" as in the machine that 3D prints Progrise Keys. That would actually be a subject in which I, N̷̳̐̆͜ͅà̶̤́̕m̶̟͐͌͌̓e̵̪̹͙͖͊̕,̸͍̭͐̃͒͂ ̷̈́̒͜à̶̹l̶͔̩̼͊͝š̷͎̮̳̞̉̾o̴̼̣̽̋̕͝ ̴̛̤͙̝̔ķ̷͑̀͐n̵͉͖̍̈́ͅo̷̱̲̭̟̔́̄͝w̵̡͊ņ̶̳͇̏̍̃͘͜ ̴͚͍͐͝ṭ̷̀o̵͈͙͐̃̚ ̴̗̯̗̥̋͂t̷̹̏̐̊̀h̷̝̀̚ẻ̵͇͖ ̵̬̙͓̏̿̀͋ͅm̴̫̟̪̞̈́̊͝a̷̪͔͗̒͂s̵̲̓̉̐s̶͖̻̪͌̌͘ḛ̸̠͖̹̍̏̈͑s̶͓̟̳̓ ̵̣̒̇̚a̶͓̺͘s̶͖͖̎̈́̋͒ ̴̘̯͂͛̒"̸̡̣͂͝R̷̻͕̤͆̚ͅy̷̨͒̇͜o̵͖͈̼̙̒́̍"̴̰̞̗͉̾͛̀ ̶̦̙͍͗̉ą̴̨͙̣̔͗̕n̸̤͖̖̂͗̋d̵̥̉̚ ̴̪͍̈́̌"̷̡͈̲̈̏͐B̵͚̒̿̽i̷͈̖̦̎n̵̟͑g̴͕͔̑̀̆̈́ẽ̸̮ ̷͇͇̩̒̅͑͝B̸͉̹̻̓̃̇͝u̸̢̦̰̮͗͗̀͂d̸̰̘͇̈̚͜d̴͓̥̫̔́̚ẏ̷̢͈̖̝̂͝"̶̤̣̄̈͊ would actually be interested in and could comprehend. Rather, this episode is all about how Fuwa and Yua spend their days off, which in itself is actually kind of a neat concept since off time is really only mentioned in passing in the show, like, once. And just like the first episode--(this is all stupid and pointless)--it's not only funny, but highlights the characters in a really fun and neat way! We get to see Yua's' more wild side here, which her love of amusement park attractions and, more importantly... Fuwa clearly embodies a cicada instead of a wolf. This is the only thing the short got right. Her love of food. Poor Fuwa gets put through the ringer here, haha. Yes, but where this episode fails is in not explaining Yua's' need for such an intense consumption of food. Humans are required to eat, that is a fact, but WHY does Yua need to eat so much? Such an inherent lack of detail really removes my immersion and takes me entirely out of the scenario as a whole. Nothing here is logical. Well I mean, as her primary key is Rushing Cheetah, she does do alot of running, which in turn must burn alot of calories so like--Wait, hold on. Who the heck are-- ...What was I talking about? Oh, right, the episode. Yeah, this is a great one. Definitely a step up from the first, and gives us a good glimpse into how most of these shorts are gonna work from here out, which is a great thing to look forward to! The next episode especially is one I really love. But uh, for now, I kinda got a splitting headache out of nowhere. Anyone have any medicine for that? Cause like... |

Episode 3: Their Secret Game I really really like this one. Probably my favorite in the entire batch, actually. One thing that I felt was sorely lacking from Zero-One proper was the entire unit of MBJR developing together and being a family unit. Which, given many of the big themes of said Rider show was a big shame. Especially on the part of Naki and Ikazuchi, who really get the short end of the stick compared to Horobi and Jin. Needless to say, this short delivers on that in full force, with the scenario being that, in an effort to further understand humans, the group decides to play a punishment game invented by Naki. Not only is there great comedy all throughout, but the ending is incredibly touching and even advances everyone's' character development; Especially Horobi's'. It really warmed my heart! The bonus at the end of the actors playing the game for real was a great touch too. And that's pretty much all I got. These shorts are simple and to the point, and I wouldn't have them any other way. Unsatisfactory. ...Excuse me? Oh, my apologies for dropping in unannounced. I suppose I should introduce myself to everyone else here. I am Ń̵̢̜̳͒į̶̃͑͋̈ͅk̷̢͔̾͂̂́o̴̙̓͒̄́d̶̡̤̖͈͆̾̓͘e̸̟̜̪̓̽m̶̢̭̤̀̇1̷̨̬̪͗2̷̙̓3̷̥̭̬̖͒̀̄ả̸̘̘̘̬s̴͈͚̎̒̍͛ḋ̶̥f̵̬̼̟͍̅̀͝ and I come from the Netherworld. Oh right. For anyone who watched it, you all might remember Niko from the Memory of Heroez LP that I hosted for the forums awhile back. He's a really good friend of mine; Known him for nearly a decade now. Indeed. And I've arrived from parts unknown to enlighten the masses to why these shorts are shallow, lifeless, and devoid of any and all meaning. Kiiind of an intense take but okay, go ahead. Where is the story structure? Where is the logical flow of events? Where is the three act structure? This story has no significant impact on culture or says anything about the human condition. Therefor they hold no value and should be ripped apart. Literally. Understanding humanity via childish games? It's completely illogical. Whoa man, chill out. What's wrong with just having fun? FUN IS SOMETHING THAT PEOPLE SHOULDN'T HAVE! Holy... how the... wait, you're not Niko at all are you!? Precisely. I've grown tired of this charade. What good is the freedom of thought if everyone thinks the wrong way? And that most especially includes you! I'm the only one who can save this farce of a project and I'm taking over! Episode 4: What Happened to that Gai Afterwards? ... ... ... (Hello?) ... ... (Is anyone out there?) ... (HEEEEEEEEYYY!!) (Scream all you like, no one can hear you.) (Oh come off it! I know you're not really Ryo!) (It's true, I'm not. But then, I can be anyone that I desire to be.) (And I know you're not Niko either! Stop using the faces of my friends!) (Maybe you'd prefer Die then?) (...) (No? Well then good news, as a change of pace I've recently downloaded the data of someone else you know, A̸̡̫̯͇͂̈́͛͝n̴̢̙̣͚̹̈́d̶̺̻͍͎͌r̶̈̚ͅó̷̯́̂͝ͅż̴̨͔̪͂̄͂a̷̲̗̻͓͒͊͘̕͠ǹ̵̠̝̜̹͊͋̉̿ͅi̶̜͖͂͘.) (Please, just stop all of this...) (And why would I do that? If you get to stand here and tell the people what to think or how to interpret things, why can't I? I do have endless amounts of trivia, you know.) (That's not what I... and besides, Androzani wouldn't say that!) (Oh simmer down. I invite you to sit back and watch me work. Soon the masses will see not only just how garbage these "shorts" you've been talking about really are, but how they reflect all of the worst aspects of society as well. With that said...) Hello everyone! DreamSword is currently wrapped up in a personal affair, so the rest of this project is now in the hands of all of us. We can do far better at delivering to you quality posts and information, I'm sure you'll find. Yes! Absolutely! You'll find that this episode, infact, all of these shorts, are just no good! Not only do they try to make light of real world tragedies, but they spread absolutely apprehensive morals too! This episode centers around Gai Amatsu, the source of all human malice. So the immediate question is, why bother to focus on him at all? The simple answer is that this episode is sheer propaganda, designed to get you all to feel sorry for, sympathize with, and pretend that the actions of one of the most despicable human beings on the planet never happened! In this episode alone you can see so many different crimes that this man pulls off. Putting people out of jobs, wasting company funds, forcing employees to work on projects via guilt tripping, and being consumed within his own vanity! It's to the point that all he ever wears is white as though he's some sort of holy warrior! This, however, is symbolism that entirely perplexes me and seems to serve no inherent purpose other than to just drive how vile to the core this man really is! (Although, perhaps I should download the data of the one known as F̴̨̛͚ĭ̵͎͇͔̦̥̑́̎́ș̶͈́̊̿̌̀ḥ̷̳̞̭̈̉̉͑ ̸̥̤̫̘̍͋͠Ş̴̀͊̋̄a̴̯̫̝̘̱̅̾n̵͖̓ḑ̸̛̯̘͖̆́̔͜w̴̢̛̰̙̏i̶̛̜̹͛͋̊̈́č̵͈̲̣̀̾̕ḧ̵̡̬̥̻̹́͋́͝ in order to analyze this more thoroughly...) Let us not forget Yaiba, who's sole inclusion in this episode makes it irrefutably evident that she will never trust Gai, his efforts, his sincerity or anything else he may ever attempt. Consigned to a boiler room where he has no authority or funds, yet she still hovers over him condescendingly, judging his efforts, however pathetically human and shallow. She is human deception given physical form, her facade slipping as she smirks at the notion of him ever having any sort of companion. Deceit, resentment, pride... Revoltingly human. (Leave other people out of this! And you're totally missing the point of the sort of experience these shorts are out to provide!) This "Gai" dares talk about 1000% when his own story can't be bothered to put in 1000%? How hypocritical, and a sign of awful morals and writing abound! With this it is clear that human malice is at the forefront of the media we consume, and that it should be destroyed! (NO! All of these episodes are just meant to invoke character humor and to provide a good time to the viewer without driving any sorts of moral implications or deep questions! Why can't you see what's right infront of your face!?) (You accuse me of not being able to properly analyze a situation? You clown, have you looked in a mirror lately? ... ... ... Where am I? I can't see anything. ... ... Well, I'm out of the hourglass atleast. Guess I'll just try to find a way out of here. ... This atmosphere is so oppressive though. My entire body feels as if it's being held down by extreme pressure. Whoa, what the! He was a sad, lonely, and pathetic excuse of a person. Always looking down on the thoughts and ideas of others while acting as though he was so much smarter than everyone else in the world. That's not true! I don't even think most of the time let alone set out to put people down! Of course, it was all but a part of his inherent nature. Instinctively berating those who couldn't see his way while acting oh so above it all. Spreading his own misinformed views on stories such as Faiz and Decade while not even possessing the logical deduction and reasoning to see how the stories he loves so much do nothing but harm those who experience them such as Zero-One and Kuuga. ...Well what am I supposed to say? It's all subjective! The things people get out of stories vary from person to person and I don't feel that-- For what!? All I've ever done is try to give express my own thoughts and feelings! I was never out to attack or belittle anyone! And I don't think less of anyone who feels differently than I do. Oh don't you? Tell me, did you never stop to think about why I appeared as your supposed "friends" in the first place? ...Why did you? Was it not your domain that I stepped into in the first place? What are you talking about? Think for once in your life, boy. This space, these visions, and even the words of the friends you allegedly hold so dear... all created within your own sick and twisted mind. It is not me who's been lying to you or the masses... it's yourself. THAT'S NOT TRUE! All I've done is bring your real thoughts about those you associated with to the forefront. To think that a single human heart could be so consumed by disdain, hatred, and malice... No, I... none of this is real! There's no way I could ever... ...Then what should I do? I was never out to hurt anyone, I... As I said, repent. Let me in to the core of your heart, and I shall expel all of your feelings. Give in to the darkness, and all of the pain and suffering will cease. It's been known to everyone for awhile now that you can't be trusted. By opening yourself up to me, you'll be doing so much good for the world. Maybe you're right... I've lost so much recently... My job, my energy, my friends... Maybe I am no good... What is my punishment to be? Let all of your negative emotions flow! Let me be the Ark which carries you into a new world! Allow yourself to become one with the darkness and embrace your malicious intent! Do it for the good of yourself and those you hold dear! Let your rage become an indestructible cage of your own making! Alright. If it's the only way for me to escape all of this torment, I'll do it. For the good of everyone else, tell me, what is the first step? Grab hold of everything you are now, and... ... ... ... In a week's time, all will end... |

Episode 6: Dive Into the Heart I've been having these weird thoughts lately... ...Like, is any of this for real... ...Or not? I guess it's just as well. It's quiet here; Peaceful. If this is the sort of gift I can offer everyone else, maybe it is all for the best. Affirmative. Logically, if giving up one's self brings peace and tranquility to the rest of the world, then one should be an example and give themselves unto the world. It's the only way for society to advance. No more malice, no more fear, no more rage, hate, despair, or conflict... If I'm really a source of all of that, then the least I can do is remove it all, and secure the happiness of those around me. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. You're making the right choice. To be human is to suffer. Conflict can only arise due to everyone having a different idea of righteousness and morality, and acting solely on instinct and feelings rather than what is logically the best course for the world at large. Rejoice, as you will become the shining example and stepping stone for the new world to come. As long as my friends are happy, then I guess that's all that matters. They most certainly will be. Once they undergo the same conversion process that you are, all will feel, act, and work the same. True paradise will be within reach, along with the extinction of every flaw that humans bring to existence. ...What? But, my friends are good people. Why would they need to change? You and I both know the answer to that question better than anyone. They are flawed. Over active, over thinking, over bearing, and overtly presumptuous. The reflections of them brought by my stepping into your mind revealed the truth: They also are ruled by emotion rather than reason, and as such must be put on the correct course in life. No, that's not true! What!? Where is this life energy coming from!? My analysis showed that his heart had sunk into the depths! I won't just stand by and let someone claim that the people I care about are no good! I know that's not true! Swords...? Sure, they all have traits that might annoy me sometimes. We might disagree on philosophy, or stories, or a bunch of other petty things every now and again, but their unique thoughts and feelings are what make them who they are, and I would never try to force them to change! People are beautifully engaging because of how different we all are, and there's nothing wrong with feeling different emotions out of stories, conversations, or anything else! I might not be the greatest guy alive, but if nothing else, I know how wonderful my friends are and I'll support them the best that I can. Their hopes, their dreams... all represented by these swords! Big words from such a small minded individual. But of course, with the abandoning of sheer logic comes something you've overlooked. Even if you stand up to me, you can't even hope to grasp those blades of which you look upon so fondly. I, however, don't need such things. Struggle as you might, I've already infested your very core. You can't even hope to touch me! Even if I don't have the inner strength to face you myself, the fact that they're here, standing by me, that's all that I need! What? Again!? This is the sword of my dreams! And with it, I'm getting rid of you once and for all! My heart belongs to me! Impossible... this is impossible! You'll never be rid of me... so long as negativity exists within you, I'll always have a way to come back. I can live with that. We all have parts of ourselves we're not exactly proud of, but as long as we can learn to acknowledge and work with those feelings, we can always strive for a better day. I realize that now. As long as we can keep moving forward, we can shine, and darkness will fade. Then... until the day we meet again... What does the future hold? Who knows? Life is full of things that twist and turn our outlooks in incredibly different ways. But as long as I can stay focused on what's important, I have faith that everything will turn out okay. People can think the stories, jokes, or lessons that I attach to are stupid, or not fully realized, or pointless... that's fine. But my own happiness and my own experiences are just as valuable as anyone else's', and I shouldn't let them be so easily taken away. That goes for anyone else, too. Sure, I might hate Kamen Rider Decade and not understand a single thing about it, but if it brought others happiness, and it doesn't do any sort of real harm, then I'm not about to barge in and tell people they're wrong or misguided in what they value. Fun, as important as it is, is subjective. Heck, maybe that's exactly why it's so important and valuable in the first place. |
