Review: Deep Breath
I'd give this an 8/10. It was good, with a creepy villain, fun side characters (including Clara, for once :) ) and the new Doctor. But there were problems. Mostly with the writing. It felt like Moffat was writing for Sherlock through this show, especially with the Paternoster gang- you know, just in case you forget that they are supposed to be Sherlock Holmes... parodies... something. Also, he can't stop referencing his own damned stories. One or two small links- good. All over the damned episode: Too much Moffat. Too much. And the Matt Smith scene. It bugs me because the whole episode has meant to be testing us with this new Doctor, constantly making us think that he might be different and just as we accept him, Eleven shows up and makes us remember what he used to be like. He reinforces himself as the hero, even when he isn't in it. That's no offence to Matt, but I think it would have been better at the beginning of the episode, when Capaldi's gone on the run. It would have worked with Capaldi, rather than undermining him. That being said, I really enjoyed the side characters, even if their personalities felt a bit over the top and they were there purely for padding. Clara, now that she is being played as a person rather than a mystery, is actually quite engaging, although she still doesn't come close to Donna or Martha as a companion. The theme song sounds good, and the visuals, while different, I like. I'm just a fan of clockwork, I guess. And while I dislike the idea of heaven in Doctor Who, I doubt it's actual heaven. Moffatt would have to hate the fandom to put that in. So, next week... Daleks! Wooh! |

Hell yeah doctor is amazing! Twelve is more eccentric then I thought he'd be.

There's an internet meme that I saw that sums up the scene in the Escape-Balloon where the Clockwork Man 'falls' to his death. (I'm going to get the exact quote wrong, I know)
Ten - I'm not innocent. I've taken lives before. But then I became clever. I talked people into taking their own. And I think that's what happened. The Doctor got clever and talked him into taking his own life. |
I am so excited for tomorrow (for Europe and the Americas, today). I've always loved Dalek episodes and the reviews for this one have been very good.
