These guys are going up for sale very soon, so I thought I'd take decent pictures of them before I do that. It's been fun, but I'm done with SH Figuarts, for now.

Those are some very impressive customs!! What inspired the Drive ones?
|
lol you're too kind
The Drive ones I was actually inspired by super random, mundane things. I'd go as far as to say they were guilty pleasures. For Chase, I just wanted something that looked stronger and bulkier than just Kamen Rider Chaser. Zero-Two had just debuted around the time I started working on that figure, and I wanted something that captured its simplicity, and didn't deviate too much from the original design. For Drive, I had just been a massive fan of Super Deadheat Drive since it was first revealed, and I had always wanted to turn it into something a little different. Many years later, when Night Rogue came around, it seemed like the perfect opportunity since they both have the whole smokey thing going on. Also, I was watching Zero-One at this time, and after disassembling the Mach Driver a bit, I couldn't help but think it reminded me of the Raidriser, which was kind of cool to me? lol I dunno For Gold Drive, for the longest time, I thought he would look fucking awesome if he had just had Super Mashin Chaser's shoulders, despite the fact the colors didn't actually match. It's like Banno's biggest "fuck you" to Gou. I probably could have just stopped there, but I took it a few steps further by giving him most of Super Mashin Chaser's body. If the colors actually matched, I think I'd be most proud of this one. As for the random Kylo Ren lightsaber...I just thought it would look cool lol |

Took the plunge on the reissue OOO's and it's incredibly solid. I'm still avoiding the arm swap gimmick just in case.

Awesome shot. Also, this fits with your avatar oddly enough, but the figure I was talking about yesterday is this guy. I wasn't really prepared to adore him this much but once I took him out of the package all those good memories of watching Den-O came right back, and Momotaros was one of my favorites. Man, I hope we get a Deneb that is as good as this one. https://i.imgur.com/4MaZPHO.jpg |

And yes, that Momotaros is great! I loved Den-O, Momotaros especially (Hence the avatar lol), so a Shinkocchou Seihou Momotaros was something I'd been hoping for. And he lived up to the hype, he's a really great figure. I'm hoping for Deneb next too, now that Zeronos has been announced, they'd look so good together. Hopefully they'll do all the Imagin at some point. |

Thats whats great about the seihou line. The engineering on the joints to make them as unobtrusive as possible and integrating them into the sculpt is like magic. Really makes these bug men feel life-like in your hands. Can't wait for Black, that one is mwah! (Chef's kiss). Just wondering how that rubber will hold up over time. Also, i wanted to ask, Shyguy, what did you use for the background in the Metsubojinrai vs A.I.M pic. I've seen you use it in a couple of pics and it looks soo good along with your immaculate lighting and posing. I just have to know lol. And Deathryuger, your practical effects skills are killer, always look forward to seeing your work.

And thank you for the kind words about the lighting! That's something I've worked hard on improving at over the years, with a lot of experimentation and practice. I use Lume Cubes for the main lighting, which I think are perfect for toy photography, I love them. For colored lighting I just use some relatively cheap little color-changing lights intended for closet lighting that I found at a hardware store, but they work great for this. |
The fantastic pictures you guys post here inspired me to try my hand at toy photography. I actually posted them on my blog which is my homepage and can be accessed by clciking my name. I know the lighting is harsh and the pictures not as sharp, but i just want to know if theyre a good start. Since your so adept at toy photography, it would mean a lot to me if you took a look and told me what you think. Also, for lumecubes which is the better light to get, the portable one or the standard?

For the Lume Cubes I personally have two of the Lume Cube 2.0 and their accessories. They're nice and I like them a lot, but some other photographers use different set ups. A lot of photographers use light boxes, I've never used one myself so I can't help much with those, but I know they're pretty common with toy photography. But honestly you don't need anything fancy, the more you experiment with what you have and figure out your own style, the easier it'll be to eventually figure out what setup will be right for you. |

Awesome use of twist/bread ties.

I totally forgot I had this RKF Horobi lying around. I bought him like 6 months ago for 5 bucks. I just applied some black nail polish because he was an absolute eyesore to look at.
I'm no good at this, but it was a fun experiment and I'm really pleased with how much better he looks. I also modified a SO-DO Attache Arrow and gave him a black RKF hand to hold it. What I'm really surprised at is the nail polish did NOT chip at all. It doesn't even feel like it's there. I applied the nail polish so many months ago. Back when I applied it, I had a hunch that the nail polish might corrode the plastic, since RKFs use a bit softer plastic than what I'm used to, but it totally works. It was actually really fun to do this. I'm shit, but I want to keep at it. I might do this with more RKF Zero-One figures. I'm thinking Rampage Vulcan is next. https://i.imgur.com/yngrM20l.jpg https://i.imgur.com/06cYBc3l.jpg |

Surprised you don't have Build in there too.

"Black Hole Finish! Ciao~"
He's a great looking figure, but the skirt does cause some issues. The skirt is kind of a soft rubbery plastic, so it's not nearly as bad as what they did to Cronus with the solid plastic skirt, but it's also not nearly as good as the fabric they used for Wizard. He's kind of in between them. I'm looking forward to the SHF Upgrade skirt! (Also I realized too late that the cardboard box I used to set up the display is blatantly obvious in this shot, but in my defense I took this at like 2:00am and was exhausted. :lol) https://i.imgur.com/mbjCvlWh.jpg |
