I kind of like how Ninninger is doing it - they all get along fine, but still have to work on acting like a team. Also, Zyuranger started off as a team already, so they didn't really need to learn how to work as a team. One last thing...I've only seen the first episode of Carranger, and the one...thing...had to drag them into battle. Do they have to learn to work as a team in that, or do they work together fine and just not want to fight monsters? I'll watch it either way (whenever it's done being subbed, if it hasn't been already) since I loved Turbo as a kid and the parody aspect sounds fun, i'm just curious. |
Carranger has been completely subbed; I have it downloaded, but I haven't started it yet. I still need to finish Gingaman and Battle Fever J before I start it.

HaroRangers subbed it. It took a while, but they finished it.

I finally watched the next 3 episodes I have to Oh (33-35) and man, that big battle with Bacchushund was so boring. It should have been something amazing, but there just seemed to be little to no energy in it and the lack of any music did not help either. Finally, the designs for OhBlocker still suck even to this day.

Okay, Dairanger episode 1.
Not a good start. Like, at all. However, this isn't surprising. So many good shows have shit pilots because pilots have to introduce everything then throw in action then throw in other stuff. Dairanger just begins. OMG MONSTER ATTACK OMG SISTER NO! OMG GIANT DRAGON! OMG KI POWER OMG I'M A DAIRANGER! Then they meet up with their 5th member. Then OMG EVIL MAITRE D's! OMG I'M A DAIRANGER ARE YOU A DAIRANGER TOO?! KILL THE MONSTER! Joking aside, I hate the villain designs. The 3 general villains just look uninspired, the monster designs (All 2 that I've seen (Including the one from the "Next episode" bit) just look ugly. And that's not in an aesthetic sense, but just poorly thought out and built kind of way. The foot soldiers are just terrible. They don't fit the theme at all and just look like a joke that someone took seriously. "Who should be the foot soldiers?" "Well, we're making a martial arts and Chinese based series, so..." "Genius! Evil waiters!" "Wait, wha?" "PRINT DAT SHIT" I love the designs of the Dairangers, but I've always enjoyed them, and I RyuseiOh's dragon form is on point, as always. |
tbh, I like the waiter henchmen of Dairanger.
I mean, we had plain dapper guys for ToQger, so I don't see the problem. I mean, look at Kakurangers goofy henchmen. |
I'm not gonna lie. There have been worse henchmen. Megarangers' in particular I remember thinking were gawdawful.
These are better, yeah, but I still don't like them. |

Well, maybe not all of it. The pilot is of the overly rush-y variety. Then again, I can only think of two or three Sentai pilots that are flat-out good. The monster designs are pretty forgettable throughout, but compared to the monsters from shows prior, they're super well-constructed and well-made. But when you get to the designs of the Gorma generals and the Cotopotoros... Well, I know you can't really say someone's personal preference is wrong but... You're wrong, sir. :D :p Those creeps are terrifying. |
Really? I think the Gorma designs are some of the best out of any Sentai series. The only ones I would say top them are the Saima Clan ones from GoGoV. I love all of the designs to the Monsters of the Week because the single eye makes them stand out from mythological creatures Bandora sent out and the ghosts lead by Junior and Daima-O. Some of my favorites include the Lipstick Songstress, High Priest Saw, Key Jester, the Three Sisters of Hell, and the Four Winds.
Another thing I love is how each Gorma monster has its own fighting style. |
I'll see if the designs improve as I go on, but I'm finding them to be pretty bad right now.
|
Well if you don't really care for the designs now then you probably won't as the series goes on. But yeah looking back on the designs, made me realize that they really weren't all that good. I'd honestly prefer Tokkyugers. But then again I don't care as much for monsters so.

Episode 2 was much better than 1, focusing on Tenmaranger.
Unfortunately, they forgot to focus on Tenmaranger... He didn't grow or change. It was just a villain who made the stakes more personal. We learned he grew up in a single mother household...And that's about it. However, it's only episode 2, so it's incredibly early. I'm not going to assume that the characters don't grow. But since they didn't tell us much about him, I think they dropped the ball. Dairanger's action scenes are quite fun, thankfully. I enjoy seeing them using ki techniques and wielding the rods. |

I figured as much. I just found it kind of striking to do a focus episode on a character and then proceed to tell us nothing about the character.
Anyway, episode 3 and 4, the series's first 2 parter. It was a pretty nice set of episodes. Their minds traveled to China, they finally learned to stop complaining and work as a team, and now they also learned of the other beasts' existence, which I assume they'll receive next episode or the one afterwards. |
I might disagree with some of your comments Matrix, but it is awesome to hear your thoughts on the series as you experience for the first time. I wish I could experience Dairanger all over again for the first time, especially since this time it would be subbed.
EDIT: Well, I'm all caught up with MFC's Ohranger release for the first time ever. It kind of sucks since I liked having a backlog of episodes to cram through in one sitting. Oh well. Anyway, do they think they threw in enough mecha in the span of 5 episodes? |
Alrighty, just saw episodes 5 and 6. Rin got a strange vision which led to the discovery of the lost RaiRai balls and the revelation that the other 4 KiDen Beasts.
This set of episodes were pretty good. It gave nice development for Rin, who was feeling self doubt after a possible friend was kidnapped. She overcame her anxiety and doubt and proved her mettle. I particularly enjoy seeing strong female characters, especially in a franchise that basically uses their women as set dressing with annoying, bubbly personalities more often than not. I liked the focus on Rin, unlike the earlier Tenmaranger episode that had a good chunk of everyone. It gave her a chance to grow and become an established character. Makes me interested in how her character will grow from here. The monster here (Lipstick Songstress?) wasn't as poorly designed as the key, purse, and yo-yo monsters, thankfully. Made watching her a lot easier. She wasn't anything special, but I did like that she was strong enough to down RyuuSeiOh. Her scheme of abducting women for her demon choir thing was cool, too. However, something that's always bugged me since I was a wee lad watching Power Rangers S2 are the Thunder Zords, or here, the KiDen beasts. I hate how uninspired they are. It's nice that they get flashy abilities to make up for how little they can do, but they're just a major disappointment, visually, compared to RyuuSeiOh. Don't get me wrong, I know exactly why they're designed the way they are, and they did the best they could, I guess, but that doesn't change how visually weak they are, SeiTenma and SeiKirin especially. |
Well, 2 more episodes down. Now at episode 8, we find out the identity of Ryou's thought to be deceased father. It's pretty interesting revelation. I didn't think he'd be a straight traitor. I was thinking they'd pull what Kakuranger did and have him be a spy or something. I'm glad they played it straight.
We get a look at a former set of Dairangers as well, which is neat. We also get our first look at DaiRenOh, who, as always, looks pretty cool. I guess it makes up for the sacrifices the individual pieces had to make to achieve it. The monster here was pretty uninteresting, but I'm confused over Gouma's reaction to seeing Ryou's father. He betrayed the Dairangers to the Gouma, and then they attack him, calling him a traitor, even though he defected to the Gouma? I'm confused... I just hope the plot decides to enter the show. I've noticed that, so far, it's just been fighting Gouma, but no trace of an actual overarcing plot has begun yet, as the monster of the fortnight episodes tend to be self contained. I do enjoy the character building they provide, but there actual story hasn't gotten to start yet... Anyway, as a final aside, I like that they don't force in a mecha fight each episode. It makes their entrance all the more grand when they don't show up every episode. It also doesn't bog down an episode by wasting 2 minutes on a giant fight. |
I love the battle between Dairen-O and the High Priest in that episode. But then, any time they use the orange sunset backdrop is an amazing moment.
|
I enjoyed the sunset fight as well. It looked great.
Anyway, 9 and 10. The character Kujaku was interesting, but also nothing new. A moment of sympathy towards a villain bites her in the ass and she comes back vowing revenge with little regard for anything else. I did like how she was defeated through constant compliments so the mirror could absorb her, though. Shishiranger connects with her on some level through the peacock feather, but then she chooses to just...Leave. I'm rather interested to see how her return is handled (Or if she just returns by the next episode. I'm only posting this now because ep 11 doesn't feature a "Last time" segment, so if she does return in this episode...I'll probably edit and update). Just finished 11 and 12 and Kujaku was nowhere in sight, so I'm pretty interested in where her story arc will go. As for the episodes themselves, they were okay. The tofu one was fairly interesting. It's always nice to see rangers defeat a monster by coming up with a tricky plan, rather than just brute forcing their way through. The magnet one wasn't too interesting, though. Just a monster being a dick. As a whole, the episodes weren't anything special beyond seeing a little time in the spotlight for Tenmaranger and Kirinranger. |
The plot of the magnet episode is not the greatest, but I love the actor that plays him so I enjoy that episode a lot. Sometimes just having an actor that is playing his role as the monster of the week and having fun with it is all you need to have an energetic episode.
Kujaku and Daigo have one of the best subs arcs in the entire series. Plus, that is the arc that contains the most episodes. |
Started watching Abaranger. As a result, I am now completely obsessed with Abaranger.
|
Episodes 13 and 14.
Rin's grandfather arrives in town with a vendetta against the Kabuki monster (BTW, I know the monsters have names, but they're so incredibly Asian that I'll never remember them unless they're super memorable). He's peppy and energetic, which makes watching him pretty nice. 13's cliffhanger ending was pretty neat. I legit thought Guhon killed the robber for a moment. As for the arc itself, it didn't do much for Rin, but we did get to see her grow and interact with her grandfather, which was nice. Rather, 14 ended rather large with not-Saba (Byakko Shinken?) being shoved into the stone King Arthur style. While I do know who the 6th Dairanger is, I am curious over how he'll be introduced and how this arc moves forward. Also the DaiRinKen. Yup. Those appeared too. We also see glimpses of a statue-esque form for the Douma generals. I'm interested if they have more monstrous forms now. |
Just finished rewatching Go-Busters. It still holds up and is a fantastic season IMO

So...Soccer Sentai Tokyo KiRyoku Bomber
This episode was certainly out there. I try to only post about Dai once every two episodes to keep my posts low and prevent double posting/constant editing. But this episode...That was certainly something. This was by far one of the dumbest episodes I've ever seen. And I loved every moment of it :lol Silly can still be funny if pulled off right. It's not like they were putting off saving the planet because one kid didn't get a birthday cake or something. So betting the life of Ryou's sister on a 1v20 Soccer game? Interesting. I like that they played it semi-seriously, but then had it devolve into silly fun once the other Dairangers arrived. As an aside, I'm kind of glad that they didn't throw Kou into the episode. I like that they're putting a little time between establishing the Byakko Shinken and the viewer's knowledge that there's a 6th Dairanger and actually inserting the character. With current Sentai throwing in their 6th by the 13th episode, it's nice to be able to watch the team operate without having a break in the status quo so early. |

Yeah. She makes a surprisingly few amount of appearances so far. She's basically only been a plot device when she's appeared.
And really? That's interesting to learn. That could be both good and bad. I'll wait to see how it plays out. |

Well, episode 16.
Kujaku makes her return and she's still hunting down Gara. She's kind of a bitch in doing so, using a child as bait to lure her out. I know the episode was supposed to show her in a negative light as she begins a path to recovery, but she's still a little on the unlikable side of things. Anyway, Daigo is pretty cool. I like that he's sensible without being over the top about it. I'm rather interested to learn where this particular story arc moves to next. |
Episode 17 and 18.
So Kou appears and, through the Byakko Shinken's telepathy, pulls him from the stone and becomes Kibaranger. Like the other rangers, the suit looks great. I absolutely love it. The story as a whole was okay. We're introduced to a new villain, Akomaru, who turns out to be what's his name's son. Neat. Watching Kibaranger act like a kid while in suit was pretty nice. It was fun to see him screwing around. Kou, though. Man, that kid is just an asshole. He completely alters Rin's life, he steals from and screws around with others, and he's just too rad for his own good. I don't like him. He'll probably grow on me, but I'm just not big on him as of his introduction. |

I mean, 1992 was the height of Simpsons mania -- Bart had to be at least part of the character's inspiration, right? Doesn't Kou even ride a green and pink skateboard? |
I highly doubt the simpsons influenced Sentai back in 1992.
|
Quote:
Still, I feel like Kou and Bart are cut from the same Dennis The Menace-ian cloth. Even if only by coincidence. |
having a child character being a troublemaker isn't uncommon, so yeah, they can be cut from the same cloth since they both share the same tropes.

Kou may be a dick quite often (seriously how Rin never slapped him silly for constantly groping her is beyond me), but he does lead to some pretty damn emotional moments, heck one of the darker ones to be frank.
|
That is one of the things I love about Kou though. Kids are cruel brats, and Kou is written like he is a child. He isn't sugar coated and his plot lines aren't dumbed down because he is a kid.
