According to the percentage thing I'm on the home stretch of Last of Us already, and I haven't even put in ten hours yet. Luckily there is DLC out as this is a pretty short title.
Usually when the character you're playing as in a video game like this swaps, it's a cheap novelty but taking control of Ellie, thrust into a chase sequence with a deer both shows how much Ellie has grown over the course of the game and also hints at the person she may have always been inside. There's only really two things that are bogging the game down for me by thi point. Firstly are Clickers, which are still one of the worst video game devices of all time. They are placed around the map like generic enemies, despite being bastards to kill who can make even shorter work of you, than you can of them. They are pointlessly difficult and add an unnecessary layer of pure frustration. Plus although I like the mature storytelling I must admit that the overwhelming pessimism telegraphs the twists from miles away. You may not know how they'll play out, but you know it's coming. By this point for something good to happen will be the only thing to shock me. Many of my earlier complaints - like the games complete and utter lack of originality - started to fall away as soon as they game had established its world so it could start focusing on the stuff in that world. |
Picked up Amazing Spider-Man. I heard the first one was a lot better than the second one, and with Wolverine, Captain America and Green Lantern all getting good movie tie in games I've stopped writing off tie in games in the water and given them a chance.
And...eh. It controls kinda awfully. Spider-Man is obviously a pretty complex mover, and to make it accessible to a mass audience - kids - the way Spider-Man controls is basically one button a hundred animations. So on screen he looks amazing, flipping through the air and all that but actually in your hands the controls feel insulting loose as you're just smashing the same button as the game holds your hand. This is especially frustrating as the game puts emphasis on stealth, and stealth needs tight controls with lots of freedom. Still the game is a direct sequel to the movie, so it's very much a story and character driven game while being very funny with lots of pop culture nods so it isn't like it's been a total wash yet. |

I've got less than five percent of the Last of Us to polish off this weekend, but now I'm basically done with the game. Is the expansion pack good? I saw it was going for 12 quid on PSN, that is more expensive than some of the full games you can get on PSN.
Now, to be honest, pretty much all of the hype around Last of Us' storytelling lives up. It uses the familiar to set groundwork and then really goes wild. Honestly it isn't even the story of Joel and Ellie I care all that about, it's the story of Last of Us' world. Like BioShock the game world is scattered with the fragments of a thousand stories, and each one paints a vivid picture and gives you a deeper understanding of the context of the gameplay. It is the quiet moments where I get to just explore and find memorable moments, which feel natural and not scripted, so they feel special that make the game. Moments like that are the reason why BioShock is my favourite game, and why I am loving this. Sadly for all the great bits of storytelling, when it comes to actually "playing it" the game really falls down by being really fucking hard. From Clickers, to forced stealth, to forced survival, to all manner of cheap deaths, the moments when I'm not discovering the game world have been an utter slog of my patience. The most amount of fun I have playing this, is stealth sections with Joel where I get to pick off people with a bow and arrow. I really love archers in games, I liked using archery in Skyrim. The other big downside is the length, sure most RPGs are too long but for a full priced title I was shocked I was inches from completion and hadn't even put in 12 hours yet. It hasn't been so bad for me, as I haven't really had a lot of free time lately, but if you didn't have much to do you could probably sit down and play the majority of this in a single sitting, if your patience can handle it. |
I decided to use the $17 of store credit I had for Gamestop to pick up The Bureau.
It's a bit choppy, but it seems decent so far. |
I went through a lot of invess and Kurokage troopers in order to craft this.
But it was worth it. https://mlpchan.net/rp/src/1400023753917.png |
