So Rightsuf's President did an AMA over on Reddit recently. He says that they have a slate for Gundam stuff up into 2018.

Which according to my math, if they release 25-6 episode chunks a month, and there are about 13 shows that are about twice that size (not including Build Fighters, Try, G-reco or IBO), then the math works out to be two years worth of stuff from now. Plus, they intersperse movies and stuff inbetween. But that wouldn't count any new shows/OVAs.

I hope we get a Thunderbolt Blu-ray at some point.

So has there been an in universe reason why there are so many Mobile suit types and variations in the various universes?

The exact same reason there's so many variants of real guns and vehicles. They're modified and improved to match different circumstances and challenges. Every time one side makes a better suit, the other side makes an even better one, and so-on. There's also personal variants for pilots with specific skills, different companies making different versions, suits that are repaired and given new designations based on the amount of changes, etc.

What do you guys think of the Stardust Memory series?

Thinking of buying it cause it's cheap and I like Kou and the GP series in the video games I've played with them in it.

I always thought (and this is my inner conservative speaking here) that all these large governments had so many mobile suits just so they could have the designers keep their jobs and still output, much as government does.

Never seen Stardust Memory, but from what I have heard the animation is really really good.

But I hate the Gundams from that show. Dear lord they are all ugly as sin.

Just curious but why do you think they're ugly?

Without going on a multi-page evisceration of the OVA:

- The mobile suit designs are some of the best the franchise has ever offered in my opinion. The only two I don't really find that great are the GP02 and the GP03. Everything else though I think is a well executed evolution of the designs and on a personal level the GP01 Zeph ranks within my top favorite designs of actual Gundams.

- The soundtrack is honestly the single greatest thing about the show. I'd go as far as to call it the greatest soundtrack of any Gundam project.

- The story starts of pretty mediocre. Typical fare with a decent little arc about an ex Zeon pilot. However it shortly afterwards sinks into being utter garbage and the ending left my utterly angry, something which I never really am when it comes to television or films.

- The characters are just as mediocre to bad. Kou and the remaining crew are bland and the Zeon side suffers the same fate. Again the only good character is that ex pilot. As for Nina...she's the worst character I have ever seen in Gundam and ranks second on my list of characters I hate and would love to see get killed.

Overall while the OVA has an amazing soundtrack and some great designs, the mediocre plot and characters drag it down and eventually sinks it with the ending and with Nina. I've compared it to being as bad as Wing and I have a hard time saying which is worse. On a critical level I would say Wing. But on a personal basis no show has ever left me as angered as Stardust Memory.

Watch it if you want but take my warning that it really, really, really isn't that good and is a product I think you'd be better off just buying the kits for because they look cool rather than spending your time and money on watching the show and walking away in a bad spot.

It would have been a lot better had it been 6-8 episodes. The last few bits of the show are great, but the majority of the show deals with Nina and her two love interests more than a good story.

Physialis to me looks WAAAAY too chunky and crappy. I know it's heavily armored, but dear lord the artstyle doesn't make it look half decent at all. The feet are just a monstrosity, the thrusters on the side look dumb and never made any sense to me.

Zephyrantes doesn't look much better either. It has this weird uncanny valley look between being bigger and bulkier like the ZZ and the slim and sleek RX-78 that doesn't really work for either style.

Neither of those designs look bad at all. The top one looks like a total brute, the second one looks like a very typical Gundam.

I swear I must be the only one who dislikes these designs. Because I see people praising these designs, but never looking down on them.

Plus the GP02 is so bulky and armored because it's main weapon is a nuclear warhead missile it's shielding to keep it from blowing itself up with it's own weapon and to protect it's pilot from the harmful radiation.

You know what I don't understand? Why the Physalis has a nuclear weapon to begin with.

Even without the Anarctic treaty to keep nukes in check, I thought the whole point of Minosky particles was to make missiles useless anyways?

More than likely the Feds intended to use it against militant Zeon fanatics or other terrorists.

How the hell did Carta escape Mika's literal death grip? Seriously, she was right under him, did Mika just forget to hold her down when he was looking at the mobile worker with biscuit in it and the two remaining guards got her?

This off-screen shenanigans is worse then in the second to last episode of 00 a gun from the prior episode swapped to the other person. Whatever.

McGillis didn't give us a ton of new stuff on the Calamity War his 4th monologue explaining it, but the development of Alya-Vijana by the predecessors of Gjallerhorn, the Gundams being a result of that creation, saving humanity from extinction, and the creation of Gjallerhorn were interesting. But for me, the biggest bombshell is that Gjallerhorn has still been developing Alya-Vijana until recently. So Ein could easily be roided out with like 11 whiskers way more advanced then what Mika and the others got. I want him to be the final boss, or even survive into the second season, but I know they're probably gonna have Mika outwit him easily and give his an okay fight.

Interesting how Kudelia knows her stuff, and how she got this whole route thing down to safer secure Tekkadan. And her asking for all those other people.

Another interesting thing is that one of the Turbines implies that the whole harem thing is just a ploy. But I wonder why Naze would lie to Tekkadan in the first place about it.

I don't like GP02, either. I think 01 looks alright, though.

Yup, you can pretty much make any variant of Barbatos since it got its round shoulder pads. All it's missing is the sword. Glad I skipped the first one.

I wonder if they also give you the arms from the original too? Since I'm assuming it'll be 75% of the same runners.

I assume so, looking at the runners the arms are surrounded by parts that are shown off, so they're not easily excluded. Aside from missing the sword and cannon, it's likely the ultimate Barbatos up until now.

Except 1) the Antarctic Treaty was moot after the end of the OYW - It was signed by thePrincipality of Zeon, and by that point what was left was the Republic of Zeon and various splinter groups, which, legally speaking, is a HUGE difference - and 2) There was rumors/evidence of the Zeon remnants developing their own nuclear-capable Mobile Suits. The Physalis was roughly analogous to Metal Gear Rex in a lot of respects, being intended as a deterrent and circumventing certain restrictions or limitations of launch vehicles at the time.

The Atomic Bazooka didn't actually fire the warhead, more used it as a single-use charge to power an immensely powerful directed blast.

It's been a while since I've seen the series and I can't read Japanese so I could be misinterpreting the specs, but as I recall it didn't actually LAUNCH a physical warhead, rather than fire a single, massive blast similar to a beam cannon. In a sense, it'd be a gigantic X-Ray Laser akin to Project Excalibur, or what was planned for implementation as part of the SDI back in the 80s.

Granted, this could just be artistic license, but that's the interpretation I've always held.

I do vaguely remember Londo Bell using nukes in Char's Counterattack to fish out the Neo Zeon suits during the end movie operation. So it's not like Gundam hasn't ever used nukes. Just not particularly as part of one's aresenal.

As I recall they were using them in an attempt to halt or destroy Axis, or at least break it up enough that it'd burn up upon re-entry. In any case, they functioned more like you'd expect a nuclear weapon to upon detonation, although google-fu points out that things like radiation, ballistic shockwaves, and EMP would be a moot point in space, the latter in particular seeing as Minovsky physics already cover that.

Still, they'd be one of the more outright powerful weapons available to a small unit like Londo Bell, which in and of itself is pretty horrifying. Though I suppose it'd be faster and easier to provide them with nuclear weapons than a fleet with firepower enough to actually eradicate a body of Axis' size.
