I think given the premise, what they did with Discord was pretty good. Discord is not evil in the sense of Nightmare Moon, Chrysalis or King Sombra. He is merely chaotic and childish. This chaos also makes him immensely lonely, so his reform is not simply learning to be good, per se, but rather a need born from realizing how desperately he needed friendship.
