How much CGI is in that series? I can't get into series that have tons of CGI (especially during mech battles, I can't watch CGI robots fight CGI monsters in Sentai) so i've been avoiding this one, since it's around the time that they started using it.

All of Zyuranger, all of Jetman, all of Ninninger so far, half of Megaranger, <10 episodes of Battle Fever J, Gokaiger, and Kakuranger, and the first episodes of Gorager, JAKQ, Turboranger, Gekirager, Carranger, ToQger, Timeranger, and Dairanger.

Honestly, i've been considering either picking Battle Fever J back up, starting ToQger again, or maybe just watching something else for the time being (like an anime or Ultraman). Or maybe I could watch a couple episodes of Magirager in preparation for the next episode of Ninninger.

I only watched half because I got bored so I don't really want to pick it back up just yet. Then again, i'm already halfway through so it'd be less of a time investment.. Maybe i'll do that.

Kind of been procrastinating on continuing ToQger, so I decided to check out the first episode of Ninninger. It doesn't seem bad, so far, and I like the design of Shurikenjin. It's so bizarre. XD

I say finish Megaranger or find Carranger and watch that. It's crazy.

If you want something newer, then hit up Abaranger or Dekaranger.

Something older, then Liveman or finish Kakuranger.

I suggest any of these for a good watch

I think your best bet is Dairanger. If you like Zyu and Jet, you've already shown you like the 90s style. And the lead writer, Sugimura, was the main shepherd of the Resident Evil franchise after the first game, so you know you're in for a weird ride. It's the best paced Sentai I've ever seen.

And then follow that up with Kakuranger, and you've got the full picture of a formative era for the franchise, along with a nice thematic trilogy with Zyu, Dai, and Kaku.

I've been meaning to watch Dairanger for the longest time. I watched it immediately after finishing Zyuranger, hoping for more of the same, but it was different enough to almost turn me off from Sentai completely. Thankfully I stuck around and kept watching, and finally got over my "everything needs to be Zyuranger" thing when I started Jetman. I'm just a bit "scared" to try going back to Dairanger now, but I know that I'll like it when I finally do. Unfortunately, I have a lot of stuff coming up to buy, so the DVD set is low on my list.

I've watched episodes 11-20 of Dairanger today and hot damn I love nearly every minute of this show. I do have to say though that Shout's subtitles are awkward at times. Some things they will fully translate in English (like Dairinkin to Big Wheel Blade, Mythical Ch'i Beast, and Byakkoshinken to White Tiger Sword), but then they'll keep other things untranslated (mecha, some of the attacks and weapon names, and they kept it Byakko for when Kou calls him by his name). That minor nitpick aside though, I haven't noticed any spelling errors yet.

Sounds like they could have done some of that to make it more accessible for people coming straight from Power Rangers.

I'm glad they didn't change the mecha names, but the whole Byakko thing sounds awkwardly inconsistent. I guess it is one of the more awkward shows to draw a line at when it comes to translation though.

I absolutely hate it me when mecha names (or proper names in general) are translated. At the point anyone translates those names I feel the localization of the dialogue has gone way too far. A name is a name. It doesn't need to be converted into any other language to be consumable by an audience.

From what you're saying, the only translation problem I'm seeing is the Byakko Shinken, and that's only because they still keep it "Byakko" when Kou refers to him as that, which can be a little confusing.

This. I'd rather it said RyuseiOh than Dragon Star King. If you translate too much, then you're almost making it into something else.

It's nothing major, it's just personal preference. I do like them translating the names of the villains like Master Mirror Makeup, Key Jester, Tofu Hermit, etc.

I prefer the translated villain names, mainly because I would never remember their names otherwise :p

That looks about right to me. When I was watching the fansubbed version (don't remember whose) it would annoy me that tons of stuff was left untranslated in the subs with a note at the top saying what it meant. I could never read it all in time and either had to pause it or go on without knowing, and they'd never show the note again. It drove me crazy.

Most of it is fine with me, it's just the little things like Qilin instead of Kirin and why call the Dairinken Big Wheel Blade if you are going to keep it the Dairinken in its attack name? White Tiger Sword and Byakko is the one that bothers me most of all, but I got over it.

It's funny but neither fansubber got it right. Nihon didn't translate enough and left the monster names in Japanese while Hikari Senshi (or maybe it was Hi No Tori) over translated everything so Ryuuseioh became Dragon Star King and crap.

For the Qilin thing... It's just as valid as Kirin. More so, because it's how you'd romanize the chinese pronunciation. And since Dairanger in invoking Chinese mythology, it's only fitting. It's not like it's a translation of the name like how Houou is supposed to represent the fenghuang. It's just a transliteration.

I've been thinking about starting Go-Onger lately. Any thoughts on this series? I don't really see people talking about it much.

I finished Carranger on Saturday.

It was fantastic. When you combine great comedy with great acting and great action, with a great plot while doing it right, you get the masterpiece of Gekisou Sentai Carranger.

It is goofy, fun, and funny. I really enjoyed Go-Onger. I say it is worth the watch

If I may ask, how did Shout! Factory handle 'tenshin'? FantasyLeader used "fortification" and got a lot of crap for it... Though it was Heat's idea, and I have a feeling that people wouldn't have complained if Over-Time did it instead. :L

There are a couple of annoyances with the subs in the last few episodes. First off, the subs always say "Kou's mother" whenever someone talks about her whether they say Kou's oka-san or just oka-san. Secondly, they still read Kaku as "Master" even when Rin calls him oji-san (meaning uncle).

Honestly, if you wanted something that kept the meaning, "Qi-Power Changeover" would be the best way to handle that.

That's really not fair to bring against the subs, though. Japanese oftentimes tends to use familial terms like mother or brother when referring to someone of no relation.
So with Rin constantly referring to Kou's unnamed mother simply as "Mother," it could be confusing to American audiences who don't know about this quirk, and might possibly mislead some viewers into thinking that Kou's mother is also Rin's mother.
I think it's for the best to, when referring to her, to use "Kou's Mother" to understand what the character's are saying without confusion or alteration.

I can understand getting annoyed when they change Rin calling Kaku uncle, that's fair, but with an unnamed character like Rin's mom, they really didn't have any options.

Also, concerning the kanji usage on "Ten" in Tenshin, Japan is like, the country of puns. It was probably completely intentional to use a dual meaning with Ten.

Yeah, plus this is only Shout! Factory's second Sentai sub. I don't know if they've does stuff like this before, but it's still probably something you just gotta get a hang for.

I agree with you and I know why they did it. Again, all of these are just minor nitpicks from what is a fantastic set. The subs as a whole are solid, grammatically correct, and I didn't notice a single spelling error. I'm so glad they did this but now I worry they aren't going to do Kaku after all.

Sure, the lack of the Kakuranger previews after the final Dai episode don't mean anything, but it is weird that they would have the Dai ones on Zyu but not Kaku on Dai. Maybe they were planning to bring Dai out right from the get go and are going to use the sales of that to determine Kaku. Meh, I'm probably putting way too much thought into this.

I would much enjoy a Kakuranger set. It's my favorite 90's sentai (Well, of the ones I've seen), so it would be nice for it to get a stateside release.

So would I. There are still other series I want released by Shout!, but if I could get the holy trinity of Sentai shows (to me, as Zyu-Kaku are my top 3 favorites) and nothing else, I would be happy.

For me, GoGoV and Ginga would be my crying of joy releases.
