However, I'll buy any Sentai series that comes out to DVD or BD in the US to support it even if it is a series I don't care for at all. |
Gekiranger is my number 1 Sentai release. I would swoon if I could get an official Gekiranger release out here.
|
I hope that they at least finish out the MMPR trilogy by releasing Kakuranger. I mean, i'd personally love to have some of the early early seasons, like Goranger, JAKQ, and Battle Fever on DVD, but i'm not sure how likely that would be. Though, didn't shout say that they had intents to release pre-zyu stuff as well?

I'm buying every season from Carranger-Timeranger if they release on dvd. I've seen 4 out of the 5 series (20 episodes of Timeranger) and damn are they great.

Getting those right now. |
Man I haven't seen a sentai show for 2&1/2 years. Been thinking about picking one up, but my interest in the franchise has generally been down. don't really know if I should watch one or wait if my interest is renewed.

Sometimes it takes just watching an episode again to get back into it.

Just posted my review:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-6B66-A9J9Q EDIT: So today I finally watched episodes 23-36 of Ninninger. As a whole, it's still pretty generic and bland, but in pieces, there were some truly great moments. First off, I did enjoy the bit with the boys trying it scare Kasumi in the abandoned school, but then they ruined it by having the fight take place in a brightly lit gym which made no sense. The battle would have been far more atmospheric if they had actually kept it in the darkness like the rest of the school had. The four episodes with the western Youkai were a joke. They were no different than the normal Monsters of the Week, but they were also pretty pathetic. What was worse though is they break up the arc with a freaking clip show episode. WTF?! I did actually enjoy the ninja school stuff with Kyuemon, but it seemed to go by too quick. Nevertheless episode 32 is down right awesome and probably the best episode of the series. The fight between Kyuemon and grandpa was badass. The new mechs though are kind of lackluster, but it made me laugh since they are all based on Chinese mythology (especially after coming off of Dairanger). The second worst episode I watched was another Youkai being in love with Yakamo. Didn't we just have that plot point like 12 episodes ago? WTF where they thinking? Thankfully the two parter with Kinji going Wolf Man was cool considering how lackluster the original fight with him was. |
Maskman episodes 33 and 34
Christ these were hard to slog through. Both of these episodes pretty much feature the same basic story and the same core issue:They lack development. 33 has quite possibly the most hilariously poorly written one off female character I've seen in sentai yet. She, Eri, gets "saved" from a Doggler by Kiros and she falls in love with him. That's the plot of the episode. Wow, you get saved and you instantly fall in love. Not interested in him or anything like that, outright in love. Strangely, I'm reminded of AsBaR, of all things. At one point in the episode, she even tries to keep Kiros from getting shot by attempting to take the blast instead. Look, I understand wanting to return the favour, that's one thing, but this is ridiculous. Not only that, she actually tries to stab Takeru. Sheswilling to commits murder for a person she doesn't know and hasn't seen in three years. As his is happening, Kiros shoots at Takeru completely disregarding Eri's safety, which Takeru even points out to her later- And she says it's her fault, and she shouldn't have been in the way and blah blah blah. This poor woman needs some serious help, because she has clearly lost it, and I'm betting the writers didn't intend her to sound this pitiful and crazy. If they did, well then they still failed in portraying a woman rationalizing her abusive(and nonexistent) relationship, since you know, this is the second time she's ever met Kiros. Maybe instead of having this be the second meeting, pre-establishing them as having an abusive relationship beforehand would have worked a lot better and explained away a lot of Eri's strangely obsessive and psychotic behavior. Poorly written, mental issues. It doesn't matter, this episode is bad either way for me. There's other problems too, like Eri somehow knowing about the Whirling Hell that Kiros was trapped in for two full years, and then also finding out he escaped. I can usually make assumptions, but I'd really like to know how in the hell she found out about all this. Also, Eri's obsession over Kiros is resolved way too easily and in a rather goofy manner. *sigh* anyway, I like the basic premise, I really do. Having a civilian character in love with with a villain, but also eventually wanting to help the heroes can be really interesting. But it's so badly executed and even creepy at times, for all the wrong reasons. Alright with episode 34, we have the inverse, but same problem. Our M.O.W is Guron, a 300 year old monster that ends up falling in love with Momoko, due to her appearance being like that of a woman who helped him long ago, or something like that, it's not really clear. I can at least sort of understand this better. Being a monster and having a human show sympathy for you could cause a great impact...but it's still really badly done here and needs more development. I'll give credit and say I feel the writing here is stronger than the previous episode with it's structure and reasoning...buuuuut that's not saying a whole lot. Things still feel too rushed, and some of the editing is similar to the first episode in it's cobbled together look. By that I mean we have a sweet 80s montage of Guron (in Human form, who is portrayed by Bioman's own Blue 2) and Momoko on a date, and they suddenly change clothes in every other scene. This montage is over the course of a day right? That's what was implied, but by the end I'm unsure if it's meant to be over the course of several days or what, because the editing is so disjointed. When and what reason do they have in show for changing clothes? Maybe a scene fell through a plothole. After the montage there's a nice scene between him and Momo, drawing some Cinderella parallels that I rather enjoy. With Guron not being what he appears, and his own and Momoko's happiness having limited time. Its a good scene that would've had more impact if there was more development between the two before this...and if they weren't on this date because Guron car jacked Takeru while Momo was in said car. Yeah, I don't think I'd go out with someone who stole my boss's car while I was inside. By the end of the episode Guron reveals he wants to live in the world of light, betraying the underground empire. Again, I really like the idea, I like the dialogue he has, this could've had the potential to have a sympathetic and good monster to be remembered, be Maskman's Whale Mutant, so to speak. But it falls short, and doesn't have as much impact it should and could. Of course he ends up being destroyed because Zeba can make him attack the Maskmen. The final scene has Momoko on a cliff, playing the flute Guron played in his human form. Again, great idea, shot beautifully, but doesn't carry the emotional weight it should. Both of these episodes, at the very least, needed to be two parters for the stories they wanted to tell, maybe even three. I'd say the best option would've been to drop one episode's plot and focus on only one. Put all effort into telling a well thought out, if short- plot line, rather than the two rushed messes we got. Episode 35. Good lord what an improvement over the last two. I think the writers stopped their cocaine usage for this one. I really enjoyed a lot in this episode. Akira is given some pretty good (and funny) lines, and the episode has good action and really great little moments that add so much for me. The basic plot is Kiros is attempting to free an imprisoned doggler, and whoever it is, it unnerves Lord Zeba. So much so he tells his subordinates to prevent it, even if it means killing Kiros. This raises quite a few questions with them. Of course the monster is freed, and apparently causes Zeba to quite literally fly away in retreat(and bleed green goop). This leads to one of my favorite small (yet important) moments of the episode, which is Anagmas checking the historical records on why the hell that doggler was imprisoned in the first place, only to find the page was torn out. This further leads to Oyobu and Baraba checking the destroyed place of imprisonment for clues. I love this. It expands on and reminds us of the underground empire's culture and history. These aren't just bad guys living underground, they have a story, a way of life, and once a great kingdom...all before Zeba came along, anyway. It also shows that something is amiss and deepening the mystery with Zeba. Plus it shows that all of Zeba's underlings- despite being loyal, are not so blind to when something is clearly wrong. This is why I watch Maskman, or anything for that matter, episodes like this one. Not necessarily main plot important episodes, but well written, coherent, interesting, enjoyable episodes. Hopefully the next few will be enjoyable, or at the very least not as draining as 33&34 were. |
So over the last three days I've watched the first 20 episodes to Carranger, my first time subbed. I forgot how slow the show starts, but it is even better now that I know everything that is exactly happening. The stuff with Zonette and Red Racer is pretty much dead on from what I could understand, but it is nice to know for sure, and it is great. Although, the subtitles got a little weird around episode 10 as names were suddenly spelled different and they stopped translating Potato Jelly Bar (whatever the hell that is to begin with, yuck). My favorite ranger remains Minoru though. Even without subs, he was awesome.

I think Carranger is one of the best Super Sentai series's of all time. It's extremely fun with a great cast and interesting plot, with great funny jokes and gags throughout.

I just completed watching Carranger and it took me about 20 episodes to be ok with the lighter tone. My favorites so far have been Shinkenger, Liveman, Jetman & Dairanger, all of which are fairly serious. Once I learned to appreciate the approach, I did start liking it a lot more.
Now on to Megaranger in my Sentai watching journey. My first two series were Shinkenger and Goseiger. Since Gokaiger had so many references to earlier series, I decided to go back to the beginning and have watched nearly all of the available subbed episodes from Goranger forward (I will have to go back to the later Goranger, Battle Fever & other early series that were done after I started). PS - I did also just complete Bioman since I had watched up to 38 before GUIS completed the series. |
Megaranger is my personal favorite Sentai. I wouldn't call it the best yet, because I haven't seen enough Sentai, but so far it's my favorite.
I started Abaranger, and it's actually very interesting with the Dino theme, blending Dinosaurs and modern Japanese people well together. |
We watched 21-28 today of Carranger and god I forgot how damn hilarious and cheesy the Pizza episode is. That episode is a toss up with the White Racer episode for being my favorite of the series thus far.
Man, I was planning to watch Power Rangers Turbo at the same time as I watched Carranger, but I just don't want to share my time away from Carranger right now, especially since my girlfriend is enjoying the show immensely. She hasn't enjoyed seeing a Sentai series this much since Gokaiger was airing. I guess I'll just wait until I'm done with Car before I move on to PRTurbo. Oh, one minor complaint though, the subtitles changed again. WTF Haro? :lol |

Abaranger is a really fun show, it's one of my favorites overall :) |
Exactly. My third favorite show is Zyuranger, but that doesn't mean it is the third best series out there. Abaranger has better writing. Jetman has better development. However, between those three shows, I am more entertained by Zyuranger and find myself watching at least a few episodes of Zyu a year whereas I haven't touched Jet since watching it subbed in 2013 and I can't even think the last time I watched Aba. Probably 2009.

Went through 29-35 of Carranger tonight and my god, I could not stop laughing, especially during the second Redietta episode. I loved Green's comment, "Doesn't she seem different?" Also, the battle between Red Racer and the one monster on RV Robo is still one of the best fights of the entire series. Damn that fight is badass. But then, I love the whole Red Racer on encouragement aspect.
|
That episode is one of my favorite episodes of Super Sentai of all time. Every Red Ranger needs that one episode where they just go ballistic and badass, and Kyosuke's enthusiasm was crazy. I have to say he overreacted in a good way in that episode.
|
Before Flash we managed to tackle 36-43 of Car. Man I love this show, but I will say, the episode with the fluffy alien critter thing with that bad teeth was pretty awful, maybe even worse than the fashion monster episode.

If so, yeah, that is EASILY one of my favorite sentai episodes of all time. It's pitch perfect parody. |
Ah, nothing like finishing up a truly fantastic series. Hell, now that I've seen it subbed I think it has moved up a post on my favorite's list.
|
FlashMan Episode 2: I figured that since GUIS is doing this show now, I'll watch it as it comes out because this is one of the Sentai I have been waiting for. I enjoyed this episode a lot: We learn about how each of the characters grew up on each of the planet/stars and how they survived; how the enemies make monsters; how they got the giant robot and more. The action was pretty good and the effects are really 80's which I find fun to see. Flash King was pretty awesome in action and I liked it separate parts too. Well I can't wait to see more and learn more about all the characters.

I watched episodes 37-40 of Ninninger today. Episode 37 was decent in its first half and then got generic in its second. The next one was pretty lame and the Magi Yellow cameo felt forced. Mangetsu's first episode started out dumb, got a little bit better, and then went back to mediocrity. I already hate this dude and wish they wouldn't have thrown in the mech battle just for the sake of having one. But then, it wouldn't be Ninninger if there was an out of place toy sale shoved in. The fortieth episode wasn't really any better. In fact, Kakuranger did that Youkai way better. Thank the gods I only have what, 9 episodes left (at least, it seems like it will be a 49 episode series)?

I love when sentai doesn't take itself seriously. Always a good time. |
Watched Kyoryuger 1. Not sure how I felt about it. Something about it felt weird, and it was a bit too cheesy. It was probably the first time that I thought "man i'm glad nobody can see me watching this" while watching Sentai. Gonna give it a couple more episodes though, maybe i'll like it. I liked the team in Kyoryuger vs Go-Busters, so maybe it'll grow on me.
|
I never really got behind Kyoryuger, personally, but who knows. You might.
|
I like all the mecha designs, though i'm not too hot on the suit designs. I've been debating whether to watch it for a while, but once I saw this I knew I had to check it out.

Do enjoy. While I did watch it all the way through, I just didn't have as much fun.
|
All the focus on Daigo was a bit much for me in Kyoryuger. I enjoyed the season, it was a good time, but way too much Daigo.
|
That's what i've heard. So far I like him though, so at least there's that.

I actually had no problem with Daigo initially. It was after he got Carnival Mode where things really took a turn for me.

If anyone's interested, I found a bunch of the Carranger Christmas Album songs, and it's a hell of an album.
Merry Xmas! from Carranger(I think this is my favorite, sound so pleasant and sung with love and care from the characters, this also played at the end of Episode 43) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NlY10yHtl_M White Christmas(Solo from Yuji Kishi, Yoshihiro Fukuda, Yoshihiro Masujima(I don't know if he's in this one, I don't hear him) Yuka Motohashi and Atsuko Kurusu sing in English for this one, and it sounds great.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sujh-Mia2dE Akahana no Tonakai(Solo from Minoru in the beginning to the tune of "Rudolph the Red nosed Reindeer) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0oz8DBr_cY Omedetou Christmas(Solo from Youko in the beginning, and Dappu later) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6uERzPFbUWY Jingle Bell Full Accel Version(Takes Jingle Bell and literally puts a Carranger twist with it, with musical cues from the soundtrack) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lFwEg6rKTkw Kiyoshi no Yoru(Silent Night in Japanese, Naoki solo) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zVUctvezVss Maeba no Kai no Christmas(Youko solo I think?) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8fp6Cs8oF88 This is all that I could find, I found a Natsumi solo but the name and description were in Japanese, I'll update if I find. |
