For Jetman, all I heard was that the story featured a lot of drama, and what happened to Gai at the end. Other than that, I had no idea what to expect. Gai was definitely my favorite part of the series. I enjoyed watching through it, but after I finished it I didn't really have any strong feelings towards it. I just thought "well, now what?"
|
My problem with Jetman stems more from these two things:
1. Gai never makes sense. One episode is is all like, "I hate this team thing, I quit!!" But then the next 4 episodes he will be all, "That's it, we will defeat this monster together!!" as if the last episode never happened. 2. Ryu wants nothing to do with Kaori for the entire series, but the moment Maria dies, he wants her. WTF? That was very unfair to both Kaori and Gai. Oh, I also HATE the designs for a lot of the Monsters of the Week, but other than that, I think it is a solid show. |
I think Gai gets so much praise because he is different from any of sentai senshi that we have gotten and haven't gotten anyone like him since. He smoked, drank, cheated, and womanized throughout most of the show (except during his stint with Kaori). People enjoy elements that are completely different and he falls into that category.
I do admit that he lacks consistency in his personality and how he treated the team (especially Ryu). That would have made the show better if Gai was a dick throughout the entire series, but I believe the writers felt it might be too much. And Ohranger's first 8 episodes are phenomenal, but there is a marked change from 9 or 10 forward. I know there was some real-world stuff going on and it mirrored to much of what the show was doing, so they made some changes to the tone of the show. Or maybe that was always their plan, who knows. |
I do agree that if Gai was consistently at odds with Ryu and the team rather than episodes with that as the sole focus, it would be a lot better and more interesting, as the dynamic would truly be different, but it is nice for what we got.
I just think that one aspect gets overly hyped up in comparison to everything else Jetman does have to offer, despite it not appearing as often as some people would have you think. I will never get behind the love triangle because it just didn't work. Gai loved Kaori (And made it openly clear to her), but she just strung him along while harboring a crush on Ryu, who was just obsessed over converting Maria back to the point where he was seemingly oblivious towards her advances. It felt like a time waster (Then factor in that Raita ALSO had a crush on her, goddammit). |

Episode 9 is like turning on another show. The characters are completely different, and it starts to feel a lot more "Sentai," if you know what I mean. |

Gai just didn't feel believable. Wavering on your feelings is one thing, but he went from a complete ass to a perfect team player. He didn't "Grow" at all. He was just a generic Sentai member unless the episode is about him, where he goes back to being a loner. After that episode, he's back to being just another ranger in perfect sync with everyone.

The Ryu/Kaori thing wasn't done very weel. But one could see it Ryu saw comfort in Kaori like he saw in Rie, and after that, he needed someone and started to develop on it. But it still felt rushed and came out of kinda nowhere. |

Well today, I watched Episodes of Zyuranger, Dairanger and Ohranger
|
Watched a few episodes of Dairanger and Boukenger today. Is it just me, or did they throw too many tropes into Natsuki? She (maybe) has clairvoyance powers, she has amnesia and is searching for her true identity, she is a clumsy-cute stereotype, and is the group's close combat powerhouse (kinda?)? I dunno, I don't really dig it. I really like Red, Blue, and Pink on the Boukenger team, though. I haven't met Silver yet; I think the team meets him in the next episode in my queue.
|
I didn't really see much tropes in Natsuki. Yellows have been normally pretty mellow compared to the Pink in female teams(Ohranger, Carranger, Megaranger and from what I understand Dekaranger to an extent) and they made the cutesy idiot one Yellow for this one.
She's a great character however, one of my favorite yellows in Sentai. Boukenger has one of the best casts in SS. |
I definitely like Boukenger in general, but it seemed to me that when they were writing these characters and assigning them traits, Natsuki caught a bunch that were enough to split between two characters. I dunno. I could be overthinking it or just being a hater, since Natsuki isn't one of my favorites in the cast.

I enjoyed the cast of Boukenger, but that show was missing something for me...I just can't put my finger on exactly what it was. I feel the same way about Magiranger except I like the story, but the cast was missing something. It's tough to explain.
|
I started Carranger this week. Definitely.... different. I think I like it.
|
I actually thought Boukenger went down hill when they brought in Eiji. The cast had such great chemistry together, but the moment he came in, something just didn't fit right.

Choushinsei FlashMan The Movie: This was one of the most entertaining Sentai movies. That it involved a cute puppy was one of the best moments here. It was seriously hilarious with them playing keep away with the puppy and most of the Rangers being fun keeping it away. Dai had the best moment going Kool-Aid man through a random family's house, taking a fish, and then breaking through the other wall. That they all wanted to protect the puppy was great. This was just a funny movie and one of the best 20 minute Sentai movies I've seen. Mess are assholes with taking the poor animals and creating new monsters out of them. Well I can't wait for more FlashMan.

I was stuck at home today after running some morning errands, so I watched a ton of Gokaiger. Watched 7 or 8 episodes plus the 199 Heroes movie. Really enjoy all five teammates, and dug Basco as a villain. I really, really dig this series; if it stays this good it might end up my overall favorite. Even if that makes me a basic bitch.

So, I'm 3 episodes into Gekiranger. The Gekichangers are awesome and I wish they kept them in Jungle Fury, and Gekitouja's cool. I love how he's not actually a robot, oh and he has an Inazuma Kick, so bonus points for that. It's neat. Jan's a tad annoying, but Shafu is awesome, and Mele's super hot, so it's fine.
|
I finished Abaranger last night.
I'm writing a review on it, so I'll keep most for there but I'll say one thing. It was truly a great series. |
Gekiranger 4 and 5:
4. Woah! That escalated quickly! Already we get an elite team of bad guys. I'd expect this closer to the end of the series, not now. These 5 venom dudes seem neat, but man...where is the show going to go from here? The Gekirangers barely survived this episode, so what? What's gonna happen? 5. https://49.media.tumblr.com/45a19f06...tbf3o1_400.gif |
Gekiranger 6 and 7:
So 6 was neat, I liked Retsu's little story there, though frenchy was annoying, and huh...apparently the RinJyuDen can love. Alright. Also, Rio needs to get over himself, and take Mele out on a date or something, come on man! |
Of course they can feel love! They're evil, not heartless!

As long as they're not mindless, they have emotions. |
I'm in the final arc of Dairanger and the plot twists are ABSURD! Three episodes left, but I have to get up for work in about 5 hours. Gonna have to save them for later in the week.
Also watched some more Gokaiger, and it's still great. Needs more Tabasco Peppers episodes; whenever he shows up it gets dramatic af. I'm not yet recovered from the absurd Jealoushita (?) and cosplay Ahim episodes. Those were... something. Quote:

I've been watching Gokaiger fit the past week and I'm enjoying it so far. I just finished the Gokaiger/Goseiger movie as well. I really loved the Sentai mech battle at the near end.
|
Choshinsei FlashMan Episode 4: A good focus episode for Dai and to learn a bit more about all the FlashMan. I like that they all had extreme training and can fight enemies without their eyes that was really good on them. I loved Dai's training with Mag and how he learned to fight standing on his head and knocked down the monster upside down that was cool and hilarious. Jin's plan was great too about fighting blindfolded he's actually becoming one of my favorite reds. I liked Bun taking charge for a bit telling Jin to take Dai back safely. The Mess Generals are really intriguing in their designs, I want to learn more about each one because that was one of LiveMan's strong points was its villains. The fights are pretty awesome and I like FlashKing a lot right now. I can't wait for more.
|
How is Flashman compared to Liveman? Flashman has some of my favorite suits in all of Sentai, so I definitely want to watch it, but now I'm afraid I'm gonna compare it to Liveman the entire time, since it's the only 80s Sentai I've seen anything of.

I started Dekaranger yesterday. I really liked the first episode, very professional feeling.

That said, Changeman and Flashman are the 80s Sentai I'm most eager to see translated. |
Changeman's basically subbed fully, Dead Fish did most of the episodes and TV-Nihon did 1-8, and from the 55 episodes, only 3 hadn't been subbed. GUIS is doing it too, but if you want to see it now you have that option.
|
I'll just stick with one group's subs. I hate changing groups because the fonts, the names, and other pieces of lines are translated differently. Unless you are Haro, then you change your subs like 3 times throughout one show :lol
|
I'm done with Dairanger and have 8 or 9 episodes left in Gokaiger (plus a movie or two). I'm probably going to be snowed in this weekend so I'll wrap up Gokaiger by Saturday.
I'm already about 20 episodes into Boukenger, so I'll continue with that and then watch another 80s or 90s series alongside it. Probably going to be Jetman, Maskman, or Liveman - I have all three downloaded but have only watched the first episode of Jetman. |
Quote:
And for Changeman, it's awesome. I only saw up to 15(the second part of the Nana 2 parter) when I found Carranger subbed on Facebook, and yeah I don't regret the decision:) I'll start it up once GUIS gets to where I was. Changeman's more drama-like and serious in tone, but the plots and characters are awesome, and the villain dynamic is also great. Hiryuu is already one of my favorite reds and I've only seen a bit of the show. |
I've been rather curious in Changeman and Flashman. Flash mainly because it features one of my favorite mechs.
It's nice to know only a few episodes haven't been subbed for Changeman, but I really prefer to watch series in full, so I'll place that on hold until it's completed. |
