Odd how this movie that's been out for 8 months would only now be judged on this then. I'll just quote what a friend had to say

"Anything can be misinterpreted by anyone. Generally speaking the film is considered a strong representation of these issues, an interesting coming of age story, and a specific story about a specific culture that the filmmaker is intimately familiar with as it is her own. And so for white america to take it and just market it in a way that is supposed to appeal to pedophiles I think it's a trash fucking take to blame the filmmaker or film for creating a piece of art based on her own life and culture. Especially because she had to scrub her fucking online presence as a result just to escape the harassment. I think that art should be allowed to exist. I think that art depicting difficult subjects should be allowed to exist, whether or not it succeeds at tackling them. I think that art coming from such a unique cultural perspective should be allowed to exist. I also think that this conversation wouldn't be so charged if Netflix hadn't done literally the most garbage thing they could've done with it. There is no good that comes from tarring something like this with such a broad brush, and I also don't think the right wing has anyone's best interest in mind lmao. The conversation as it stands is not "does this work at tackling these themes" (which I may add a large amount of critics thought it did when it was screened independently and in it's home country) but a conversation of whether this art should exist at all because of an American corporation thinking they could get away with doing something unconsciable based on marketing suits with poor taste and that's fucked up six ways from sunday".

TLDR It's getting criticized for talking about something difficult by people who have no fucking clue what they're talking about who judge the whole thing on Netflix's awful marketing and it's not a coincidence a black refugee woman is getting hate for something about her own experiences by white people

Dude that's literally been my argument from the time. Netflix marketed the movie in a way to glorify what the movie's against and you said that didn't matter and that the movie was inherently awful by linking the guy who proudly worked for Alex "They're making the frogs gay" Jones but now you're saying there's a difference, which in this case, was Netflix's fault entirely as the original film had no such marketing when it got advertised and released long before Netflix made a deal to distribute the movie?

The movie's existed for months with relative silence in Europe but it gets one badly done Netflix poster and suddenly some random American lad known for being dodgy online happens to know the ins and outs of the casting process (and also accusing the director of nvestiagated by Interpol) and starts a feeding frenzy online based on out-of-context clips and hearsay.

Argh, I'm buying things to cope with sadness and boredom. I really really need to stop.

Hey so I'm going to throw my hat into the ring for the cuties discussion. I've heard from a person who has actually watched the film that despite the well intent the film still has the child actors act sexually and by focuses on those actors' bodies in a sexual way. This may be to simulate the way the adults are looking at them, but it's still damaging to those actors. According to the same person it shows the girls acting as the one choosing to sexualize themselves without showing some sort of manipulation by an outside actor. Along with this is has them sexually harass a boy their own age again without context.
