The second season is a clusterfuck. It's not a filler arc, it's substituting for the real story, just using some of the fights and other scenes and placing them in completely random contexts that don't mean anything. They cut out an inane amount of content and just like...everything. They completely fucked the story over, and they completely fucked over their chances of continuing the story with manga material in any way that makes any sense (because root a doesn't make any either). It's just horrible. I still have fond memories of the first season, though I think it's something worth watching before reading the manga. Still maybe worth watching though. I think the last episode in particular is very good. There is no conceivable reason to watch root a at all, though. |
When it comes to anime based on manga, I think you should view it as it's own thing. For me, sometimes I watch the anime before I read the manga.

I notice that too. With manga, everyone wants the anime to be 100% perfect to the manga. When comic books from the US get adapted, people are like "They can do whatever they want".
|
That's such a false equivalence. American comic book adaptations are very rarely actual direct adaptations from specific comic book stories, so they get away with taking liberties. When they're advertised as directly adapting specific things though, whether it's comics or books or whatever, people definitely start looking for proper, faithful adaptations.
Plenty of people have Opinions about those things, it's not an anime thing. Even if you take an adaptation to be its own thing, (which hey, you definitely should, judging things on their own terms is the right way to go) that doesn't somehow make a garbage adaptation stop being a garbage adaptation, and if the adaptation bastardizes and shits on everything that made the original work good, people are gonna complain. This isn't a complicated concept. |

For example, it's not like Dragon Ball has been rebooted 6 times and has been going on for 50 years. It was a set number of volumes on a set storyline that had a beginning, middle, and end. That was it. However, I want the writers of the adaptation to make sure they at least get the characters right. Superman is supposed to be bright, colorful and hopeful. Flash is kind of th same way. Jonah Hex is a former confederate soldier whose tone changes based on the story, but he still has rules. Movies that don't follow the rules are wrong. However, if you do an adaptation of say The Killing Joke, it better damn well be accurate. If they do an adaptation of Flashpoint, it better damn well be accurate. |

For me, I watch things to be entertain. Even if I never read the original source material, I can still enjoy it as it's own. Like I never read the Godfather novel, but I love the first movie. I didn't play the video games of Danganronpa and I still found the anime to be enjoyable. |

episode 5, 6 and 7 of Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney.
Overall this was a great three party and a pretty good adaptation of the third chapter of the first game. They made some changes to the story but i think these changes were for the best, they changed part of the plot so things didn't have "first game syndrome" and i love that. Also i'm all caught up with the first season of the Yokai watch anime which just leaves me wondering... Sequel when!? |
I generally like when an adaptation is like Ghost in the Shell, Trigun, Gantz, etc - it takes the general idea of the story and turns it into its own thing. What we're left with is the manga and the anime both being completely enjoyable. However, if the anime follows the manga pretty closely, with maybe some filler arcs thrown in, it's hard for me to choose which one to do first. On the one hand, I love reading manga. On the other hand, sometimes I have easier access to anime. I also sometimes feel like an anime is more of..."the full effect", having voice acting, music, animation, and sound effects. Death Note I found to be rather boring as a manga - the sound design added a LOT to the atmosphere of the series and was a much more enjoyable experience. But in general, I think I like reading manga more.
None of that really had anything to do with what anime I'm watching though. |
For the next anime I plan to watch, I may watch Full Metal Panic next. I remember seeing the first two episodes over a decade ago. It look like a fun show. I still need to finish the 90's Golgo 13 movie and the recent Golgo TV series from a while back.
This is the anime that I finished watching so far and my grade rating for it. The Boy and the Beast - A The Devil is a Part-Timer - A One Punch Man - A Macross Frontier the Movie: The False Songstress - B+ Macross Frontier: The Wings of Farewell - B+ Venus Wars - B+ Akame Ga Kill - B Cyborg 009 vs. Devilman - B Golgo 13: The Professional - B Mezzo Forte - B Noblesse: Awakening - B Phantom Quest Corp - B Violence Jack: Hell's Wind - B Violence Jack: Evil Town - B- Ayane's High Kick - C+ Guardian of Darkness - C+ Call Me Tonight - C Violence Jack: Harlem Bomber - C Wrath of the Ninja: The Yotoden Movie - D Kimera - F |

Oh man, Guyver, seeing Kimera on your list got me thinking of some of the worst anime series I have ever seen aside that one. MD Geist, Ninja Resurrection, Biohunter, Final Fantasy Legend of the Crystals, Gate Keepers, and Peacock King. Oh god those were all terrible, but nothing was as bad as Weib Kreuz.
|
I kinda enjoy Bio Hunter when I first saw it. I thought the idea behind the anime was interesting. MD Geist was bad, but it's very cheesy for me to watch. I remember renting Legend of the Crystals on VHS, but I remember it being okay. I didn't see the others.
I also really hated Doomed Megalopolis, Genesis of Aquarion, RahXephon, Diabolik Lovers, Skelter+Heaven and Kiss x Sis (I could not finish the first episode). Quote:

Cyborg 009 is a fun manga, but I never finish it due to lack of proper English translation scans. I do enjoy the early 2000's TV series. Quote:

I love RahXephon. I think it is better than Evangelion.
|
I could not finish RahXephon during it's third episode over several years ago. The show gives me a huge headache. The only thing that I like about it was the animation and that was it.

So I just watched My Hero Academia episode 6. It was a great episode, but I really don't like how slow it's moving. There's only 12 episodes, but last episode they finally finished covering the first volume of the manga. I assume they'll do a second season at some point, but I'm still worried about it. |
Phoenix Wright:Ace Attorney episode 8
Magnificent adaptation of the first part to the epic final chapter of the first game! |
Just finished Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro. It wasn't my favorite Miyazaki movie (I think I'd still give that title to Nausicaa, though it comes close) but it's a great example of anime done well. Enjoyable characters, adventurous spirit, and just an all-around good time. Definitely glad I picked this one up.

Suite Precure:
Overall, it was alright. I don't think it was as good as Heartcatch. Though, it still had it's moments, and it was always entertaining. I think all the characters are pretty good. The main standout to me being Ellen. Though, a big part of that could be because I like the "reformed villain" archetype. I also really like the shows general theme, which is no matter what happens, sadness can always be overcome. Though, that theming was always somewhat understated throughout the entire show, until the final battle. The characters...let's start off with Hibiki and Kanade, since I don't think I can talk about one, without talking about the other. I like them, they're good foils for each other. You have Hibiki who's rash, and likes to just do whatever she wants. Then there's Kanade, who is her voice of reason, saying "Hey, Hibiki...you can't just go and do that." and they spend the early episodes constantly arguing, since they stopped being friends prior to the show. However, they eventually learn to accept each others differences, and become better friends as a result. Though, the amount of times Siren tried breaking up their friendship did get a little old after the fourth time. Speaking of Siren. I started off not really liking her, since she was just unpleasant to everyone around her, but then she starts remembering who she is (more on that later) and eventually becomes Cure Beat. Aside from her reformation dragging on too long (again, more on that later). I liked it when she finally went back to the good guys and became a Precure. I liked how the show didn't focus too long on her guilt and how said guilt was resolved immediately, as well as how Siren went and made sure to apologize and talk about her guilt with the one she had hurt the most, Hummy (Looking at you, My Little Pony...). Even telling Hummy, that she should be mad at her for all she's done, with which Hummy replies with saying that there's no need to dwell on the past, and she needs to focus on what she can do now. Onto Hummy. I'm of two minds on Hummy...because for one She's horribly bad at her job. So, the whole setup of Suite Precure is that the bad guys want to steal the notes from Major Land's Legendary Score, and turn the Melody of Happiness into the Melody of Sorrow, so in response the Queen of Major Land, Aphrodite (yes, Aphrodite) ejects the notes from the Legendary Score, and sends them into the human world and scatters them, so the bad guys can't get them. Now that I've explained that, here's why Hummy's bad at her job. She'd find a note, and instead of putting it away immediately, so the bad guys can't get to it, she either would hold it out and say "HEY GUYS I FOUND IT!!!" or trip over something, and then the bad guys would create the monster of the week. It got rather annoying, since a lot of the MOTWs could have been avoided if Hummy wasn't an idiot. At the same time...I find it hard to hate her, since she's a really good person and sees the best in people no matter what, and will go to any length to make sure people are never sad. This even entered into the final battle with Noise, in where she purposefully let herself be absorbed by him just so She could sing the Melody of Happiness within him to give the Precures the edge so they could defeat him (more on Noise later). Hummy is also pretty good comic relief, so she has that going for her as well. The villains. They're all very cartoonishly evil, especially Mephisto. Though, they explain his (and Trio the Minor's) cartoonish evilness as them being controlled by the true main villain, Noise. Speaking of Noise, he starts off as "BLARGH! Must destroy everything good!" but then you find out what his deal is, and it does make him a more interesting villain, as he's the embodiment of all humanity's sadness, and thus believes that he can never be happy. So, his true plan is then revealed that he wants to silence everything, and make the world be at a standstill where there is no happiness or sadness, or anything. Though, the Precure's teach him through their fists and a lot of yelling that even he can overcome his sadness. Now, the show could drag on sometimes, like when Siren started to remember who she was, and then got brainwashed not long after, because we needed to drag out that character arc longer, I guess. Speaking of Siren, I'm still not sure if she was brainwashed from the beginning or not, or if she turned to evil of her own accord. They didn't explain that clearly enough, I feel. I also felt that Cure Muse took a little too long to reveal her identity. One very specific thing that bothered me was how twice in the show during big, climactic fights, they'd just reuse music from Heartcatch. The first time being when they fight the powered up Mephisto, and the second one (and this one bothered me way more) in the final fight against Noise, when they reuse the final battle music from Heartcatch. Yeah, I like those songs, but it just felt lazy. I also took up issue with the fight scenes, as they'd kick or punch the monster maybe twice before pulling out their finisher. I want to see an actual fight, not stock footage, and then more stock footage. I don't remember Heartcatch having that problem either. I remember the fights going on for much longer. Suite did start doing that near the end of making the fights longer, but I wish that's what they had done the whole time. Speaking of stock footage...yeah marathoning a Magical Girl show is pretty rough, because of the transformation and finishing animations. It started to wear down on me after a while. Though, to be fair...that is more the fault of the genre, than with the show itself. So, overall I liked the show and thought it was pretty decent, and really good at the end. I just found it much more flawed than Heartcatch was. I wonder how Smile Precure will hold up... |

You know what I don't like? When you think you're watching a show about a miko and a talking bear engaging in shenanigans but then it turns out lol you're actually watching a show about forcing a girl with severe social anxiety to become an idol.
That. I don't like that. |
It's that time again.
What were everyone's favorites from this season? And what are you watching next? Started with nothing, but eventually picked up three - Kiznaiver, Kabenari, and Re:Zero. First two were okay, though Kabenari I was really just watching because it was available with Amazon Prime. Kiznaiver turned into something I wasn't expecting and still not sure how I feel about that. But I've been absolutely loving Re:Zero and am glad it's not getting a break and is just continuing on in the next season. For upcoming shows, I'm thinking of trying 91 Days and Orange (might not start this one for a few weeks to learn what it's really like, just tentatively on my list because of how highly rated the manga is). I also plan to watch Berserk eventually, but want to watch the original and the movies first and have been putting them off continuously. |
I can't catch up with newer anime when I used too. So I haven't watch anything from this season. I still haven't newer anime from several years ago. I hear mixed things on Re:Zero. However I do love reading My Hero Academia and I can't wait to watch the anime soon.
|
Luluco is my favorite this season. It's got the crazy energy and humor I've come to expect from Trigger, but it's not Ninja Slayer levels of stupid, and it's fun.
Kiznaiver comes second, it's decent. I knew it was gonna turn into a power of friendship anime, and I'm into that, but I dunno, haven't been able to get into it or any of the characters as much as I wish. Oh well. Couple of other series I'm watching like Sakamoto or Flying Witch aren't bad, decent stuff to have playing while I'm doing other stuff, but they're not really getting me invested either. I guess AssClass falls into this category too. The last episodes are turning out to be pretty good, which only makes me wish I actually cared about it. Kuma Miko is also in the "watch while doing other things" group though as I've alluded to before I find it vaguely unpleasant to watch. And Mayoiga was shit. My summer is looking pretty busy, gonna be watching at least 10 series. Busiest season of the year it's looking like, but at least it's still a lot less than last Summer. I'll be watching: -Danganronpa 3: Mirai-hen -Danganronpa 3: Zetsubou-hen -Arslan Senki: Fuujin Ranbu -Binan Koukou Chikyuu Bouei-bu LOVE! LOVE! -Mob Psycho 100 -Mahou Shoujo? Naria Girls -91 Days -Amanchu -Kono Bijutsubu ni wa Mondai ga Aru! -orange Also may end up watching Love Live Sunshine depending on whether I can get a friend of mine to watch Amazons. We'll see. Also kind of interested in Rewrite? Because a lot of people say the VN is really good. But there seems to be some doubts about the anime's ability to do it justice, so I'll probably wait until it's over to see whether it is worth it. I feel nothing but a deep, visceral aversion to the PVs so it's not like I'm chomping at the bit to watch it anyway. |
Did the Dangan Ronpa animes already premier? Oh, and why are they called 3? What happened to 2? Still not sure why there are two series either.
|
I would like to start the new JJBA anime seeing that I read Part 4 a long time ago. I probably wait until when it is finished. The newest anime that I finish was One Punch Man a while back. Still watching Dragon Ball Super, Hunter x Hunter 2011 and the newest Gundam show on Toonami.

They're 3 I guess just because they're not 2. Shrug. Don't know why they decided to skip the adaptation of SDR2 but they did. Mirai-hen is the conclusion to the Kibougamine storyline, so it's technically a sequel to SDR2 (though it looks like it'll focus on the DR characters more), while Zetsubou-hen is a prequel to SDR2. |
Watched Seitokai Yakuindomo over the past month. It's a fun series and I enjoy it. The last OVA for * doesn't come out until December, so I guess there is that to look forward to. I do hope whoever ends up subbing that does a better job than whoever did the 5th one. Gotta say, that episode would have been a really nice and funny one to leave off on if only it wasn't for the subs looking like they were written by comatose orangutan. Horribly, offensively terrible subs for that one. Out of order, blatantly incorrect, and most annoyingly left pretty much all the text untranslated (SYD has way too much kanji). I had to basically translate and make sense of everything by myself, took forever, wasn't fun (complained about that elsewhere). It really is a shame, a lot of those jokes were decent enough. The kappa shit? Fuckin' gold.
Anyway that's done. And as soon as I finish Agito and some manga and a couple of short films, I'm gonna start watching some more stuff. I'm gonna do something wild and unprecedented and I'm gonna try to watch one show at a time instead of, like, 5, gonna see how that goes. Starting with Katanagatari. Should be good. |
Kabenari ended pretty... meh. I wish they stayed on the damn train haha. Biba was so uninteresting.
And just in time for the new show to start, I've started the original Berserk finally! |
Oh yeah, so we finally watched Acts 4 and 5 of the newest Sailor Moon Crystal season yesterday and is it wrong me to say I was bored to death? Am I supposed to be feeling this way when my favorite characters are finally making their apperances?
|
Yeah the new season of Crystal was a bit weird. It was better than the previous ones in that the animation was a lot better and the characters all began to actually feel like characters, but worse because the actual main plot was boring as hell.
|
|
Started Katanagatari last night.
Gotta say, the 50 minute runtime is really working for me. And two episodes in, it's already pretty good. NisiOisiN really knows how to write 'em. Very entertaining. |
Finished Episode 16 of Gurren Lagann. Pretty nice. Although I do feel rather short-changed on what happened with the Spiral King. I know what's coming next so of course they had to do what they did, but it just felt flat with all the mystique & wonder concerning him from the start. And Viral also felt lackluster despite seeming to be a part of something bigger after talking to the Spiral King not too long ago. But the fights were cool & Simon was nothing short of awesome.
|
I am just loving Berserk. About to start episode 21.
Shame I've heard nothing but bad, bad things about the new show. :lol Makes my rush to watch everything else almost not worth it, but I've been enjoying it anyway so oh well. Still plan to watch the movies first too, but apparently I'll still be missing out on arcs because for whatever reason the new show is skipping over them? Is that right? Seems pretty dumb... Hope I can find some good summaries somewhere. I also watched the first episode of 91 Days today. This show looks promising. |
Sakamoto is hilarious.
So go watch it. |

Berserk (1997) Berserk (2016 First episode) |
Demon of Steel: Battle of the Great Demon Beasts - I found a rather obscure anime on Youtube and it seem like a cool anime to watch. I went in knowing nothing about this anime. Personally I'm rather disappointed. I was not hoping for high art, but I wanted something way less boring to watch.
This anime is 56 minutes long and nothing happens for 40 minutes. The whole monster mecha battles don't happen until the end of the anime. The pacing sucked and the characters are so one-dimensional. I didn't care for anyone and what happens to them. The story itself didn't make much sense and things are poorly explained in this anime. Why didn't anyone address the enormous black rock that I assume has sat in the ocean for the past three years? Everyone must be too stupid not to notice it. The last battle is so anti-climactic and it makes you rather angry for sitting through 40 minutes of utterly boring filler with dull characters. For positives that I enjoy in this anime was the music and animation. The animation is very solid for an anime that was released in 1987. The monster designs are awesome looking. That's pretty much about it since this anime has very little to offer. Was it Awful? No, it was just really mediocre. I feel like that this could have been a great anime. Sadly, we just got a really boring and forgettable anime. There are better anime from the late 80's and you can skip this one. Grade: D |
