I'm contemplating buying a 3DS XL and getting Pokemon X or Y.

As the guy who just got back into this and did the same thing, I want to say Y, but Im honestly not sure. If you can still find I suggest either the Blue (for X) or Red (for Y) Pokemon edition 3DSXl since thats what you are lookin for.

Honestly there's not much difference between these particular versions, so either one is fine.

I'd say the differences are version exclusive Pokémon (which are pretty much easy to trade over wifi) and some dialogue differences regarding the villain team:lol

The only differences that I know of are X gets you the Legendary Pokémon Xerneas (Fairy type, which is the new type introduced in these games.) and you can catch Aron. Y gets you Yveltal (Dark/Flying type) His signature move is Oblivion Wing which is basically a cooler looking, more powerful Giga Drain. You can also catch the Pokémon Larvitar.

Only reason I got Y was for the Mega Charizard thats still Orange :lol

It boils down to who you think looks cooler. Xerneas or Yveltal. Aside from a few Pokemon being exclusive to one version (Aron, Houndour, Clauncher, and Staryu in X, or Larvitar, Electrike, Skrelp, and Shellder in Y), they're very similar.

However, the now defunct slogan of the franchise, "Gotta catch 'em all" does need both games to accomplish.

Fuck Ruby and Sapphire and there's no guarantee the Mega Ring will be available in an RS remake (It's likely it will be, though).
And the 2 or Z was in reference to which Porygon I should use. Porygon2 is much more defensive, while Z is all out offense.

Z is more deadly, able to one hit KO like a beast (And access to Nasty Plot, making it harder to survive against it), but 2 has the benefit of being a defensive tank, able to take hits like a champ and deal them back out with just enough damage to be a threat. Decisions decisions...
