You also have to remember that Shin Mazinger isn't just a straight reboot of the franchise for newcomers. It's a retelling that incorporates a dozen variations of Mazinger along with a bunch of other Go Nagai works, so seeing all that crammed into an action-packed first episode appeals to existing fans. For someone who talks about how people should watch Japanese audio because "it's the way the show was originally intended" you're showing a noticeable double standard here. |
The first episode is what now... Oh god, it's another Gungrave situation? YUCK!! Gungrave is one of the worst anime series I have watched because the first episode gets you pumped up for the show and then the next like 18 episodes are just boring filler with characters you don't give a damn about because you already know how it is going to end. Then when you finally get to the show they advertised it is a rushed mess that is full of nothing but action scenes and no development.
|
Um okay. Except Shin Mazinger is nothing like that so I don't really know what point you're trying to make.

Oh I totally agree that it actually makes a really good introduction to Mazinger, especially since the plot is far more involved than the originals and the characters far more interesting (they did some INCREDIBLE things with Baron Ashura). It's just a case of "you will be confused by the first episode, but enjoy the spectacle of it all and prepare for the ride that follows". If anything, I'd say the first episode is the perfect hook because the actual origin eps are fairly generic in comparison.
Generic because Mazinger wrote the rulebook of course, but you know how fickle modern audiences can be. |

I finished Soul Eater today. Good show, but the final episode had so many ass pulls.
Anyone recommend me another anime to watch? I'll wait awhile before I watch another one given how hard I went on Soul Eater in the past few weeks. |

And Osomatsu-san is worth the investment. |

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JSMSMdHtocw I suggest to watch the anime subbed, not dub. The English dub from ADV in my opinion was pretty awful. |
Start watching Noragami and so far it's good. Probably need to finish Record of Lodoss War and Golgo 13 during the Holiday season. Noragami reminds me a bit of Yu Yu Hakusho, so that's a good sign for me.
My friends and I watch some bad anime for fun. This is what I competed for our bad anime Marathon. Generation of Chaos - Not sure what to think of this one? The animation was awful, but I felt like there was some effort on a story. The cheap animation and bad story telling are fun to laugh at. This anime felt like it was trying to be like Pokemon and any typical Fantasy theme anime, but badly done. I seen way worst, but see this anime once for laughs. Grade: D Spectral Force - This one is based on a video game series that I never played. This anime is so bad that it was fun. Nothing in this anime made any sense and the animation was so awful that it makes Bible Black look like a Hayao Miyazaki film. There was a lot of random WTF moments to make fun of and the dub is very cheesy. If you want to watch some bad anime with friends, I suggest to check it out. Otherwise, skip it. Grade: D Panzer Dragoon - Another anime that was based on a video game, but at least I knew about the video game series beforehand. This anime was pretty easy to make fun of with the bad animation, terrible voice acting and horrible writing. For a one shot OVA based on a Sega Saturn video game, there's not much to say. The dub did help made this anime more enjoyable. I did feel like that this anime had some level of potential. Only watch it for laughs with friends. Grade: D+ Dog Soldier: Shadows of the Past - This anime was the best out of the other three that I watch with my friends. However it's still not very good. I do have memories of this anime being on VHS at my local Hollywood video back in 1996. I mistaken it for a Rambo knock off, but this anime is inspired by the Rambo movies without a doubt. The story isn't that good, but the action scenes make it up for it. The anime is enjoyable for being pretty cheesy and can be over the top. However the character interactions not very interesting and the anime has way too many flashbacks. Not to mention, the animation is not even that good (Even for 1989 standers). Overall, I was not hoping for much with this anime but it was not awful. I seen way worst and I'm glad that I saw it. If you like action anime from the 80's and 90's with little to no plot then give it a try. If you want a good cheesy action anime from the 80's and 90's, I suggest to watch Riding Bean or Mad Bull 34 instead. Grade: C- |
I just realized I haven't really posted here in a while so, I guess I thought it was time to do so. Have been watching plenty of stuff after all.
So, as far as seasonals go...this season is a mixed bag, as is usual, but not as mixed as they usually are! I think the is the only one I can remember where none of the shows I'm watching are actually bad, just there's a few I don't care for. But, specifically... So ClassicaLoid ain't good. The characters are very one-note and the gags are unfunny, and I know I just said none of them are actually bad but I guess I just forgot about this one because honestly, this one is kinda bad. It's just not entertaining at all, and after 11 episodes I just grow more tired of it. The music is occasionally fun, but rarely. I kinda like the art style, but I dislike the art direction, which is troublesome. It's far from the worst thing I've ever seen, but it's about as far from a series I would want to spend 25 episodes on as I could imagine. The next 14 weeks are gonna be annoying. I suppose that does give it plenty of time to get better, but seriously, not expecting anything. Nanbaka is a series I was really hoping I would like, but holy hell do I not. The Warden is barely in it anymore so the one thing I liked about it isn't even there to tide me over. I don't think it's bad (though it seems seriously confused about what kind of series it actually want to be) but it’s definitely not for me. Nobunaga no Shinobi is ok, I guess. It’s inoffensive which I guess counts for something. And short, so it doesn’t feel like I’m wasting my time so much. AppliMonsters ain’t doing so much for me either, but I went into that in the Digimon thread so I won’t say much here. Also, I’ve fallen behind and there’s like 5 episodes I need to watch so it’s not like I have anything to say. 3-gatsu no Lion is a fantastic show, and I’m so glad that I chose to watch it for no reason. It’s really great. Artistically it’s very unique and well executed (as expected from Shaft) and the story is very well realized. Characters are solid as well. The only real criticism I have for it is that the tonal shifts from the usual more lowkey, sometimes somber feeling it usually has and the overly energetic comedic bits it gets into are kinda...whiplashy at times. Though even so, it kind of feels like that is intentional to some degree. Regardless, it has had some extremely strong episodes so far. Also, Bump of Chicken is a blessing from the gods. Fighter is great, but Answer is just the most incredible thing. I feel like I could watch the opening a thousand times and never tire of it. Watashi ga Motete Dousunda has gotten less fun with time, like I still really love it, but after episode 8 it’s been less...I don’t know. Maybe episode 8’s Cure parody just was too tough an act to follow. Or maybe I found creepteach to be a creep. It’s good though. I’m really enjoying Occultic;Nine, but man, being 12 episodes is so limiting. Only one episode left, and it’s just...there’s no way it’s gonna be as satisfying and conclusive as it could have been, perhaps, in another universe. I so wish this was a two cour series. As it is, I still like it a lot. The characters are...not that remarkable, but entertaining to see interact, I suppose, and the whole driving mysteries has been very fun for me. It vaguely reminds me in some ways of Chaos;Head, a series that if no one else, I really enjoyed, so there’s that. Was only kinda hoping the stories of the “nine” would intertwine more, as there’s around three characters who have done little in relation to the others. But well, I guess that’s what 12 episodes gets you. I’m sure I’ll enjoy the ending regardless, but it’s a bit of a shame. Then there’s Lostorage incited WIXOSS. So, fun fact, I literally haven’t been caught up on my shows long enough to get to this one in the entire time it’s been airing, so I’ve yet to start it. I’m pretty sure it ends like, tomorrow. But I guess it’s not so bad. I don’t know anything about it, so hopefully it ends up being at least as entertaining as the previous WIXOSS series. That’s my seasonals so far. I also finished reading Sakamoto yesterday, so I watched the last couple of episodes I hadn’t watched and the OVA. The episodes were decent enough, but the OVA was some pretty useless crap. Oh well. Anyway, as far as stuff I’m watching separate from seasonal stuff goes...finished Haruhi a while ago. Enjoyed it a lot. Movie was great. Then I watched the Nagato spin-off. I kinda struggled with this one at first, because it’s...pretty off. Then I started considering it as just being on the same tier as stuff like Churuya or Haruhi-chan (and to be fair, it has some suspicious similarities to these, like being comedies, all the ooc, and making Asakura a main character). It was fine after that. Ultimately, I enjoyed it well enough. I’d probably go as far as to make the leap to say it was good if only they’d committed to the confession at the end. Oh wells. Also started a couple other series. Gyakkyo Burai Kaiji is really damn good. I am no longer able to recall why I ever added it to my plan to watch list, but I’m sure glad I did. I’ve only seen 10 episodes (so the first arc and the beginning of the second) but it’s really engrossing when it gets going, and all the little trickery is really satisfying and fun to see. Also, I love when series just spend a bunch of episodes on a single event like this. Really fun. Also started Shinsekai yori. Also 10 episodes into it. It’s definitely not bad, I just don’t know what or how to feel about it so far. Definitely an interesting one, the latest episode I’ve seen in particular. There’s really endless possibilities of where they could take it from here, so it should be very interesting no matter which way it goes. And...I think that’s about it. |
Curious, what anime series/movies did you end up watching this year? It doesn't matter if they were new or old, list them.
I watched: Gankutsuou Gungrave Gundam Zeta Gundam Gundam ZZ Gundam 00 Psycho-Pass Psycho-Pass 2 Psycho-Pass The Movie Gundam 08th MS Team Gundam 0083 Danganronpa Gundam Wing Turn A Gundam G Gundam Gundam 0080 Gundam Reconquista G Gundam Age Gundam Thunderbolts Gundam X Gundam Seed Gundam CCA Gundam F91 Gundam Seed Destiny Gundam Unicorn Escaflowne Dragon Ball Super Gundam Origin Eps 1 & 2 One Piece (Thriller Bark and Sabaody) As you can see, this was a Gundam year for me and I still have to watch Victory and IBO (well I started but never finished so I'm just going to start over). Regardless, I haven't watched this many series in a given year since 2007. Aside from the two Gundam series, next year I plan to rewatch Code Geass, Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell SAC, check out One Punch Man, and finally watch my DVDs of 009-1 and Last Exile. I'm probably not going to watch as much anime in 2017 though since I really need to catch up on my Toku. |
The year is not over yet. I still have a few more titles to finish before the year is over. I'm going to try to finish Noragami Season 1, Record of Lodoss War, Golgo 13, New Dominion Tank Police and Overlord soon.

Overall, I feel like I watched a bunch of stuff. It's probably less in number than I watched last year (the bulk is made up of seasonals, which themselves were less than I watched last year) but overall I watched more longer series this time. I placed a moratorium on adding things to my to-watch list at the beginning of the year, since I wanted to focus on finishing all the stuff on it that had been there for ages, and I actually came pretty close. Including Kaiji and Shinsekai yori which I'm currently watching, I believe there are only 7 shows left on it. ...however, they are also pretty lengthy or have multiple seasons, so that'll take a while longer. (Jojo already already has like, fifty seasons). Still, I'm mostly satisfied with how many I watched. Took on a lot less seasonals this year, which was probably the right choice. Even those I did pick up mostly weren't so great. I'll probably cut back on them even more in 2017. We'll see. |
... Wow... just wow. I haven't even heard of half of those series.
Question, do you need to have play the Danganronpa games to understand the new anime? The thing I loved about the one I watched back in Jan was that I did not need to play the games to understand it. |

...There's also the fact that unfortunately (at least in my opinion), Danganronpa 3 ended up being kind of stupid in the end. You do need to play the game to be able to watch the the anime properly, but that shouldn't be the goal. Honestly, SDR2 is so much better as a story that it's just really worth seeing in itself. The anime is just a bonus of questionable quality. The Danganronpa 3 anime also references and includes characters and events from the spin-off game (Ultra Despair Girls), but not as heavily, and doesn't really...do as much with it. Without being familiar with it, a bunch of things would probably be confusing but...it's not stuff that matters as much, at least compared to the SDR2 stuff. I also think UDG is a more interesting and worthwhile story in itself, but that's just me. |
Ooh this sounds fun. This year I've watched...

Finished JoJo's Diamond is Unbreakable today and I loved it. Can't wait to see Vento Aureo now.

Also means my plan to watch list is an absolute nightmare of a mess. Do I realistically ever expect to get to them? No, of course not. But meh maybe eventually. |
I forgot to list Sailor Moon Crystal S3, but that's because I only watched like 6 episodes (I think I made it that far) before I stopped.
|
Gurren Lagann up to episode 18.
The time skip made this show go from super robot fun to Gundam all of a sudden. |
Diu had a PERFECT ending
Squid Girl is a very fun show, currently at season 2 episode 5 |
Only watching Yokai Watch episodes with the two lion-dogs.
That and Tiger Mask W and random Gintama episodes. |
So my g/f and I watched the first episode to a show called Star Driver. We were ready to turn it off 3/4s of the way through. It was down right stupid.
|
Eh, each to their own. The only thing dumb about Star Driver is the movie, the show itself is fantastic.
|
I will post my list of anime that I watch and competed in 2016 on News Years Eve. I still have a few more titles that I need to watch before the year ends. This is what I finished recently.
Noragami Season 1 - I just finishing watching Noragami and would probably finish it a week ago if it was not for my busy work schedule. I enjoy Noragami and I can't wait to watch season 2. The show had a good mix of action and comedy. The humor was well done and it give me a good laugh. This anime does have similarities to other Supernatural theme anime like 3x3 Eyes, Bleach, Shaman King, Karas, Ushio & Tora and Yu Yu Hakusho. Unlike Bleach, at least Noragami had an interesting plot and fights don't drag. The animation and music also good too. What I also enjoy in Noragami was the characters and how they are all likeable. I enjoy the personalities that the characters and how they all grow along with the show. Funimation did a good job on the dub and the voices work pretty well. I also decided to check out the show sub and the Japanese voices are good too. I recommended to check it out both sub and dub. My biggest issue with the show is the underwhelming bad guys. Our main villain didn't show up until the last few episodes of the show and I felt like they could have add more build up to him. Not to mention I wish we would have learn more about the Phantoms instead of them being just a typical "Monster of the Week" creatures. Overall I thought Noragami was a fun show with funny humor, good action and likeable characters. I would recommend this anime for fans that enjoy supernatural theme anime with both action and comedy. Grade: B Joker: Marginal City - Pretty obscure anime from the early 1990's. I wanted to check this anime out since I always like anime from this era and they are the type of anime that I enjoy growing up. This anime was alright and could have been better. The music was good, the action was enjoyable and the soundtrack was awesome. The animation is good for its time. However I find the story pretty weak and the main character to be completely one-dimensional. The main villain was not that all interesting and Joker was probably the best character in the anime. I also could not help to notice that this anime feels like X-Men meets AD Police since I do notice many similarities between the two when watching this anime. The voice acting is pretty good (This anime has no dub) since you did had some great voice actors that are industry veterans who are active to this day. From what I've seen that this anime is based on a manga and this anime was meant to start an on going OVA series. I would like to check out the manga out day. Overall, Joker: Marginal City is average at best and I would only recommend this anime to hardcore anime fans of obscure old school anime. Grade: C |
Sweet, the Accel World movie has some good subs now.
Thought it was pretty good once we got past that recap. Granted it's been long enough I needed that (though wish they actually talked about the last arc that aired instead of just showing it when way too much time was spent on the previous one as it was an interesting one). Sure hope when (if...) a second season comes it picks up exactly where the first left off though. Because the movie takes place pretty much where I think the novels are, as I didn't really know half of the characters or what's going on. Some light wiki reading up beforehand didn't help much either. That was the biggest problem with it by far and it was a real big fault, especially at the end. Because otherwise it felt like a decent side story. Just hampered too much by having to ask what you've missed. |
Did a final push today to finish up a couple of series, Lostorage incited WIXOSS and Shinsekai yori.
Lostorage was...ok? I definitely enjoyed the original WIXOSS more. I don't know, it's like...the twists and turns feel less impactful and more emptily melodramatic this time around, and so many of the new characters are just chronically unlikable. Even the ones designed to be, like the main villain, aren't even that appealing as villains you're meant to hate, just gross and creepy and unpleasant. All words I'd also use to describe the forced attempts at sexual analogies throughout the show. Those words, as well as these other ones: "real fuckin' stupid." And real recurring too, which was a problem. So, there were some downsides. On the other hand, the system in place for the Selector battles is more rational than the original one, and I actually like the characters I did like more than the original ones. I like Suzuko, and I especially like Hanna, who I found to be a fairly strong character and a much better one to round out the trio of focus characters than Hitoe was. This is something that surprised me, as I find her verbal tic to be terribly annoying. That I still liked her despite that speaks for itself. Sadly, Chinatsu is one of those chronically unlikable characters I mentioned, which is a bit of a shame. She's also like the focal point of all the stupid sexual analogies (Want to do it with me???? Get it because we're talking about card games but somehow we're making that a sex thing???? Gosh our writers sure are clever). Somehow I liked her even less than incest sister from the original. Speaking of which, last time incest brother was the only male character in the show, more or less. This time we had a lot more, and man do I wish we did not. They all pretty much were total ass. LRIGs weren't too notable this time around, not even the main ones. Kind of makes the ending less successful but not too much. Ultimately, I did mostly like the ending. Whole thing was kinda bittersweet, it was alright, and while it wasn't resolved as much, things were wrapped up, at least in regards to the story they were telling. So I was surprised when the title card of the show ended in the very last frame of the show, since compared to the first season this one really wasn't begging for a second season. In fact, I'm not sure how they're really going to make a second season out of this, because at least as far as the main characters are concerned, there's not that much story left to tell. Maybe they'll make Piruluk the main character. I wouldn't mind that. So, yeah, hopefully Lostorage conflated WIXOSS is better. Shinsekai yori I don't have as much, or really much, to say about, if for no other reason than that I'm still thinking about it. Everything aside, it's definitely a show that leaves a lot to think about. It took me a while to really get around to it and see where it was going, but it definitely became engaging and interesting and well, great as it went on. The fact that the last arc was as stressful to sit through as it was really drove that home to me. And I'm glad that I never had anything spoiled to me about the show. It was a very satisfying watch and a satisfying end. I enjoyed it. It'd probably benefit from a rewatch, but well, I'll leave that for another time. Not a bad way to finish this year of anime watching, anyway. Doubt I'll have time for much else today, so...yeah. |
I finish the New Year with these two anime.
Ninja Scroll - I haven't seen this anime since I was 11 and I still love it. Ninja Scroll was the gate way anime to people during the 90's along with Akira and Ghost in the Shell before Pokemon and Dragon Ball Z was release over in the US. Ninja Scroll is like the perfect action anime in my opinion and I do consider it to be on the same level as Akira and Ghost in the Shell. The animation is amazing and still looks great even today. All of the characters are great and really well done. This anime is a anime movie that I think even non anime fans can enjoy because of the story, action and animation. Goku Midnight Eye - Another badass anime from Yoshiaki Kawajiri. While it's not as great Wicked City, Ninja Scroll, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust and Cyber City Oedo 808. This anime is still very well done with a good cast of characters and an interesting story. This anime is lose re-telling of Journey to the West set in a futuristic world. Goku Furinji is a really cool main character and the Japanese voices are really good. Not to mention the supporting cast was pretty good too. The dub is meh at best. This anime is over the top and sleazy, but I feel like it's supposed to be like that. That's what makes a lot of old 80's and 90's anime fun to watch because of the era that they are made. Back during the Golden Age of Japanese anime (late 80's-early to mid 90's) when anime companies was not scared to take the risk to make cool anime. If you love old school 80's and 90's action anime or Cyberpunk anime from that era, give this one a watch. Now the year is now over. Anime titles that I plan to watch in 2017: Active Raid - I remember seeing the first episode a while back and I thought it was awesome Ajin 2nd Season - Love the manga and enjoy Season 1. Concrete Revolutio - People told me that this is a pretty good Henshin hero style anime Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor - I hear nothing but amazing things about this anime. I still need to watch it one day. Golgo 13 - Still need to finish it Noragmi Season 2 Psycho Pass - I saw the first episode two years ago and it was pretty good. It remind me of old school Cyberpunk anime titles like Ghost in the Shell, A.D Police and Cyber City Oedo 808. Record of Lodoss War OVA - Still need to finish it |

Psycho-Pass too. |
Psycho-Pass is incredible. The second season is not as good as the first, but still raises A LOT of interesting questions and goes into the origin of the Sybil system.

Tried watching Karas. Couldn't get past the first episode, but it DOES look amazing and is very toku
