The characters do grow on you and show maturity over time. The show is 49 episodes, so the show does have a bit of a slow start, but it does get better. The show was dub by Saban back in the mid 1990's, so I recommended to watch it subbed (Saban's dubs on anime are pretty awful expect for a few titles). There is also a OVA sequel known as "Tekkaman Blade II". I recommended to give the show a try. |

There is also Zetman if you want another Toku henshin type of hero anime. However I do recommended the manga more over the anime since the anime barely cover most of the story with 13 episodes from what I can remember. The anime is still good, but not as great as I wanted it to be.

Has anyone seen Little Witch Academia? I only know of it by name and the crossover episode in Space Patrol Luluco. I enjoy Trigger Studio works from the few titles that I've seen, so I do want to watch it. Should I watch the movies on Netlfix first before I see the TV series?

You should watch the movies because they're great, by they aren't necessary for the series. The movies just throw you in while the first episode of the series is an origin story.

Just watched the three Rebuild of Evangelion movies.
And holy shit, they were actually good! I watched the 1.11 way back when it was originally released and didn't think much of it. What a difference a few years makes! I think back in the day I was too distracted by the changes to the source material that I couldn't watch the movie as its own thing. A little distance allowed me to do just that, and I was mighty impressed. But not as impressed as I was after I watched 2.22. That shit blew my mind. One of the best anime anythings I've seen in forever. The way it recontextualizes the events of the last 3/4 of the series was so interesting, and the ending is one of the most powerful climaxes I've ever seen, in any movie, ever. 3.33 was also good, but it was admittedly a little lackluster after the excellence of 2.22. The character interactions weren't quite as strong as I was expecting, which was a bummer considering how stellar the character work was in 1.11 and 2.22. The 14 year time jump was an exciting idea, but I think it brought with it a certain degree of (intentional) confusion that made it difficult for the characters to ever get on the same page. The stuff with Kaworu was still super good, but 3.33 didn't clear the bar set by 2.22 I can't wait for 3.0 + 1.0 (the fourth one). I expect it to sidestep the problems with 3.33, now that Anno has had some distance (and thus perspective) and he's had time to recharge his creative batteries. I'm so excited to see how out-of-control bonkers the conclusion ends up being! Hell, even if it's bad, it will no doubt be craaaaazy entertaining. |
Chugging through these:
Tiger Mask W Dragon Ball Super elDLIVE The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. Tiger Mask W is always fun, and I really like the one-shot/slice of life episodes that Dragon Ball Super has. Toei has got my money with these two shows. elDLIVE feels like Men In Black meets Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy in terms of tone and good to see Amano do stuff with comedy in it after finishing Psycho-Pass. The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. is great to watch without thinking. TIGER MASK W <I prefer the ending than the opening, also for all you Gaim lovers, both opening and ending songs are by Shonan no Kaze the folks who gifted us with Just Live More https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9pCFkHlgFlA Dragon Ball Super https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7IlxQ_UdraE elDLIVE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7x1p9MAHw8 The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_nlL7pk7PI |
Finally kinda breaking out of my anime funk and started KonoSuba.
|
Anime never really interested me. I only watched Pokemon when I was a kid. That was it. My friend recommended Attack on Titan and I've been watching it for a few days now. I have to admit it's really good.

This is what I watched in January. I didn't watch much due to being busy with work. So this is what I watched.
Guy: Double Target - The first anime that I watched in 2017 and I decided to check out after hearing about it over the years. Trashy ultra violent anime from the 80's and 90's are a guilty pleasure of mine. Titles like Mad Bull 34, Apocalypse Zero, M.D Geist, Baoh, Genocyber and Angel Cop are over the top violent and often incredibly cheesy. These titles have so much blood and guts that they are so much fun to watch. Guy: Double Target is just as fun as those anime titles, but I feel like it could have been better though. The animation was pretty good, the action was nicely done and the monster designs are awesome. The bad dubbing makes these type of anime enjoyable because the dub is so awful on every level. Like titles such as M.D Geist, you don't get much a strong story in the anime since the story and the characters are poorly written. However the anime makes up for it with over the top violence, gore, nudity, bad dubbing and sex scenes. My biggest issue with the anime is that last episode felt really rush. This anime felt like it was made to be a 6 or 13 episode OVA, but we end up getting two episodes instead. I think this anime was capable of a lot more than just two episodes. Overall, Guy: Double Target is a new guilty pleasure of mine. I recommend Guy: Double Target for people that like Urotsukidoji: Legend of Overfiend, M.D Geist and other 80's-90's gore titles. If you don't like any of those types of anime, avoid it. I give Guy: Double Target a 7/10 Babel II (1992 OVA) - I remember hearing about Babel II growing up and my blockbuster had VHS copies of this anime back in the day. Seeing that it's from the creator of Tetsujin 28-go (Gigantor), I finally decided to check it out for the first time. I end up really enjoying this anime. The animation is pretty great for its time and the music is really good too. I had to watch the dub since subs for the Japanese version is hard for fine until the new DVD release is out. The dub from Streamline Pictures is not bad, but I would like to watch it subbed again one day. What I enjoy about this anime was the story because I find the idea of the Tower of Babel being link with Aliens to be really cool. I also found the villains to be cool and interesting. Our main hero "Koichi Yamano" is a pretty cool character but I felt like they rush his character development pretty quickly. His powers to summon three powerful beings (A a shape-shifting black panther, Giant Robot and a Rodan type of monster) to be pretty awesome. Too bad those beings didn't do much in the anime. Another issue that I had with the anime was the supporting cast felt weak and the last act of the anime feels very rush. While this anime is not great, I think Babel II was very enjoyable from start to finish. It had a cool premise and awesome action sequences. If you want something with strong character development and deep writing, you won't find it in this anime. If you enjoy old school OVAs or 90's Shonen anime with cool fight scenes like DBZ, Yu Yu Hakusho or Flame of Recca, I suggest to give this anime a watch. I give it a 7.5/10 I'm now curious to check out the manga, the original 1973 TV series and the 2001 reboot TV series. |
Haven't posted here in a while. Haven't had many opportunities to watch as much what with school starting up and most importantly being preoccupied translating some manga. But I've been watching some stuff.
10 episodes into the second season of Kaiji. It's pretty great. 8 episodes into JoJo. It's something. Also watching a whole gaggle of seasonals...wasn't planning on watching as many as I am, but I'm liking most of what I'm watching. Or at least what I've seen of what I'm seeing. Not really caught up with a lot of them. Youjo Senki is cool, horrible art direction on the female characters aside. Little Witch Academia is fantastic. And...I think it's just those two I'm up to date with? Lots of stuff on the backlog. I'll post my thoughts on them when I get to catch up. |
After catching up with the manga, I'm now watching Ajin: Demi-Human Season 2. I don't think anyone expect for me watches and reads Ajin. I personally recommended to check it out. If you get sick of Shonen anime every season, it's a good Seinen series to check out (Seeing that most people feel like Seinen anime seem to be produced less after 1998). The show and manga has great action, great characters and really well told story in my opinion.
This month will be the 30th anniversary of Bubblegum Crisis which is one of my favorite anime series. So I will re-watch and watch all of the Bubblegum Crisis anime for the next few months. I will be watching them in the order that they are released: Bubblegum Crisis A.D Police OVA Bubblegum Crash (The only Bubblegum Crisis anime that I never seen) Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040 A.D Police 1999-2000 TV Series (This one is going to be painful to rewatch) Parasite Dolls (I never seen this one neither) Afterwards, I will watch Kaiji, Pyscho Pass, the rest of the Record of Lodoss War anime series (The OVA's, TV series and the movies), Noragami Aragoto and whatever is still in my on hold list on MAL. |
Space Dandy, baby

I never bothered to watch the second season because I couldn't even get into the first. However, one of my friends recently picked up the BDs to it, so I might give it another shot after I watch Cowboy Bebop again.
|
The second season of Space Dandy is pretty great, but if you like QT and Meow they get less screen-time in it than Dandy so there's that. Characters like Scarlet however, get a lot more focus in the second season compared to the first so with that said watch Space Dandy season 2 if liked the first season.
|
Season 1 of Space Dandy was a lot of fun. Season 2 was good, but I feel like Season 1 was better in my opinion. Some episodes of Season 2 looked and felt really rushed.
|
Does Season 2 bring in a plot? That was my biggest issue with Space Dandy is there never seemed to be any continuity. I mean, they turned into zombies for one episode and then they were fine the next.
|
It's a full-fledged comedy, so you shouldn't be expecting a deep plot or anything despite the previous works
EDIT: Season 2 has a damn good explanation because of it's first episode's gimmick It explains that there's an infinite number of possibly dimensions, each with their own Dandy, QT and Meow. The reason there's no continuity is because it's a different dimension! |
I just finished watching Attack on Titan. That was a great show. The last few episodes were the best. I can't wait until season 2.

I stayed home sick from work on Friday and ended up watching the pretty much the entirety of STEINS;GATE...
Credit is due to any show that can get me to watch 20 episodes in a day (note: I'd already seen the first 4 eps). It's obviously doing something right. BUT. Um... I guess I thought it was only okay? The first 12 episodes were very slow, but the promise of it "getting good by episode 12" kept me going. And sure, when the plot kicked in around that point, the show became like animated crack. I couldn't stop watching. But by the end, I thought it was like really well made junk food. It's seriously lacking the grander themes and complex characters I require from my "top shelf" anime. It is a very well-structured time travel series, but all that's impressive about it is its structure... I think my main problem was that I hated pretty much all of the one-note, semi-harem-esque supporting characters and could not connect with Okabe at all. (Because he is intolerable.) The arc in the middle about Suzu was admittedly excellent, but it's only like 3 episodes. Hardly enough to justify watching a whole 24 episode series. I def don't understand all the "Best Anime Ever" plaudits the show gets online. The fandom's near-universal praise is a large part of what kept me going, even though I was lukewarm on the series from the beginning. But by the end I was like... "really? This is the show everyone declares a modern masterpiece, in the same breath as Evangelion and Utena? Hardly!" I guess what I'm saying is, I wish I spent my sick day watching something better. :lol |
Watching Samurai Trooper because nostalgia and Dragon Ball Super as well. Gosh, the 90s must be in full effect.
|
Watching Haruhi has done unfortunate things to my head. I am now literally incapable of hearing Sugita Tomokazu voice act without it sounding like Kyon doing silly voices. I guess this is my life now.
In spite of this, I do think I'm enjoying Battle Tendency more than Phantom Blood overall, even though I'm only two episodes into it. I enjoyed the progression of PB for the first three episodes or so, but the 6 after that were...definitely there. BT's kinda fun. The whole incident at the diner made like negative sense though but whatever. My only regret is that best character Speedwagon is just an old man now. |

I like Part 1 and Part 2 of Jojo over Part 3 because I like the darker tone and the horror atmosphere better in my opinion. Too bad Part 7 is not going to be adapted for a long time since that's my favorite part of Jojo.
