I'm finishing up Dekaranger - have about 8 eps to go. This series is defying categorizing for me - I like the characters and the support staff/additional rangers are great. I like the mechs and I really find myself liking, along with GoGoV and a few others, the whole "rangers as part of an organization" theme.
Character development has been decent - not across the board but pretty good. Some of the individual monsters of the week have been interesting as well and all of this sounds like this should be one of my highest rated series but the main adversary has been so absent and has none of the normal sentai trappings (generals, etc.) it has brought down my enjoyment of the show since there really hasn't been an ongoing threat against the team. It has just been a series of individual criminals the team has been going after with few ongoing elements. I still like the series, it just would have been higher in my estimation with more of an ongoing villain storyline. |
Only 4 episodes left to Liveman and thank the gods for that.
|
Finished all the episodes of Dekaranger! It was a bit of a mixed bag for me. I thought that the lack of ongoing plot (or generally good episodic plot) brought it down along with the not great character development and somehow making SPACE POLICE and COOL ALIENS mostly focused on a small part of Earth. However, within the last 10 or so episodes it really pulled off something good. The shift from episodes focused on single to duos of characters was a good move and the final battle can be explained as nothing but awesome. I loved that they couldn't transform for most of it! Liked it more that the vanilla that was Abaranger for sure. I just wish that most of the show wasn't so throwaway. Gonna finish up with the extras for Deka I'll be done.
|
Your opinion of Deka pretty much matches mine.

Just finished episode 29 of Zyuohger and wow for the 2000th episode of Super Sentai that was awesome between this and the last episode it was great and refreshing getting to see the Gokaigers again and the finisher was fun with the special anniversary finisher while a bit odd. But hey thats Sentai for ya. Also I love that they used the anniversary episodes to introduce Zyuoh Whale. That was awesome and really clever too. Honestly I had forgotten this was an anniversary series
|
And I finished Liveman. I'm not going to really post my thoughts here since I'm going to do a video review next month and would rather save my typing on this show for my script, but in the end, I would say it's aggressively average.
|
It seems a lot of people are experiencing Sentai that barely scrape past mediocrity and slide by with "Average" recently.

I don't know what happened, but my biggest issues come down to how bland all of the characters are and that every episode has a freaking monster of the week. Even the final battle is against a monster of the week. It's the actors themselves that make up for the show's blandness. Except for green and black. They were utterly pointless as they added nothing to the show. Oh, and somene really needed to get Yusuke a losenge. Quote:

So getting away from Carranger for a second, the mood struck me to rewatch Kyoryuger VS Go-Busters. It was pretty sweet.
I'm not sure what everyone else thinks of it but I imagine most people fall into the camp of either "they ruined my dino Sentai team-up by putting Go-Busters in it", or "they ruined my Go-Busters epilogue by putting a dino Sentai team-up in it". As a fan of both Go-Busters (<3) and Kyoryuger, I'm conveniently in the perfect overlap to enjoy the movie, and frankly, I think it does a pretty remarkable job to make the clashing premises fit together even slightly, let alone as well as it does. I remember fellow Go-Buster cultists (or fans, but what's the difference?) being more than a little upset there were two other Sentai teams shoved into the yearly VS movie, seeing it as one last middle finger from Toei, that they were basically saying the Busters were so unmarketable even putting them with the Kyoryugers wasn't enough, but even so, I think Riku Sanjo really treated the team with respect. It definitely leans heavily on the Dinosaurs! side of things, with the plot largely centered around the Kyoryugers, but the really genius thing that makes the whole movie come together for me is that, despite seeming less important on the surface, the Go-Busters do like, ALL the actual work throughout. The best part is that I'm not even exaggerating that much. The film really plays up the fact that the Go-Busters are professionals, using their intel-gathering skills to think up plans and executing missions with tactical precision while the Kyoryugers basically run around like idiots shouting about how "bureibu" they are and violating all known rules of gun safety. I'm pretty fond of Riku Sanjo's writing, and I think this is a great example of why. Obviously he's not actually making his own team look bad, but even though the Kyoryugers are the center of the plot, the Busters are the ones who actually drive it forward. They're so critical to the story that if you wrote them out, the bad guys would win like ten minutes in, and again, I'm only sort of exaggerating here. It's in no way an epilogue for Go-Busters (which is fine because the ending it already had was great), but the movie takes how the team are basically total outsiders to this bizarre plot about bad guys trying to steal dino energy for eeeevil and really rolls with it in a way that lets them shine one last time. Beyond the satisfactory treatment of the Go-Busters, the movie itself is totally nuts in the best way possible. I mean, there's a chunk of it where the Kyoryugers get turned evil, put on all-black clothes for maximum eeeeevil style points, and go back in time to exterminate the dinosaurs by shooting them with handguns. And if that doesn't sell you on the movie right there, how about the explosions? So. Many. Explosions. Can you tell Koichi Sakamoto directed this? It's all very bombastic, as is Kyoryuger's style, building to a big crazy climax featuring three teams of Sentai (and also the Go-Busters), and even more explosions, just for good measure. Basically it's pretty dang enjoyable. I don't know if it's the best thing ever, but of the VS movies I've seen, it's one of the more memorable. Oh, and since the movie awkwardly glued the ToQgers to after the end of the film, I'm going to talk about them awkwardly after I was clearly wrapping up the post. I joke, but I actually sort of like it that way. Especially since this movie was even more busy than usual, I don't really think it would've made sense to put them anywhere else. It's just a nice little goofy fight scene to end things on after all the big action earlier, letting the ToQgers do their goofy thing. And I do mean goofy. I swear, you'd think these guys were all 12 years old or something. |
I just started watchin Liveman, so far it's interesting.
|
I'm nearly finished watching Goggle V. It's definitely a jumbled mess, but it wasn't really that bad either.

I have been slowly plugging away at battle fever j for a while. Life has gotten in the way and done episodes are good and others are really boring

GEKISOU SENTAI CARRANGER
CAR CAR CAR MAGIC! ...So, holy hell, this show just...Starts. Like, to use an apt pun, it slams on the accelerator and never stops moving. I want to do a little synopsis, but so much happened that it's hard to actually remember what actually happened :lol Well, let's at least try. If I forget something, then oh well! So, we start on the far off planet of Hazard, which gets Alderaan'd by the time you blink. Afterwards, we meet our main villains of the series, the Bowzack, partying. At this party, a mysterious masked figure points out that the Carrangers will protect the universe. This masked figure is quickly discovered to not be a Bowzack, and actually the only survivor of Hazard. ...Using Car Magic, he teleports to Earth (Which the villains were already headed to anyway because shut up) and finds the soon to be Carrangers, working at an auto shop and lamenting that they're not getting enough free time to make their dream cars. Dappu (The survivor), basically tells them they're the Carrangers, and uses his Car Magic to modify their garage into their secret base. There are so many applicable JonTron reactions I could post that I'm not gonna post any. Bowzack attacks! Apparently cars have a primal side that want to just go wild. BECAUSE. Dappu tells the gang to go into action. He finds out that they're all hiding from him and he has to both shock them and then tie them up and drag them to the battle. What can I say? If all of this was happening to me in the span of about 10 seconds, I'd react the same. Bowzack is having a field day and Dappu starts to fight since the Carrangers aren't doing a thing. After falling to one of the generals, he tells him how his mother died and dies himself, dropping the keys to their Accel Changers. The Carrangers then morph and perform their role call! And then Dappu gets up and reveals he only feigned his death to get them off their asses...Could've at least waited a couple minutes... Okay, they start fighting, defeating the devious fire truck by removing the key. OKAY, I GUESS. They also wrestle with an evil tricycle. I wish they destroyed it because that would've been awesome. Alright, so... One of them makes the Fire Truck become a demon and they shoot it dead, after it sends them all flying. Also, they got go-karts earlier in the episode, and one of the villains tried to lick the ass of some sexy villainess. And, much like a car moving at 90 mph only to slam on the breaks, this episode just ends. I swear, this show gave me whiplash. Well, I guess since this episode dumped literally all the plot on you, things should start flowing a little more smoothly. So, what is there to say? Oh yeah, despite name dropping Gekisou Sentai Carranger about 12 times, the Carrangers receive little actual characterization. And by little, I mean literally none at all. Aside from Red Racer, most of them got about 3 lines that, like the rest of the episode, only served to further the plot (Or name their salary). They didn't even drop hints of character traits, annoyingly. OH YEAH AND WHAT THE HELL WAS EVERYTHING ELSE? Oh well. Pilots tend to suck hard, anyway... |

Man, I really need to get back to Carranger. It's been what, nearly a month now? That's way too long... Quote:

And yeah, Geki's pilot isn't the best. It is better than most other pilots, though. But in relation to the rest of the show, it's not the best start. Jan's lack of understanding Japanese (As well as poor speaking skills) may get annoying, the Sha-Fu/Xiafu/however you spell it is kind of forceful and throws him on the team, and everything else is just average. |
Jan has a reason for the way he is though. He lived in a jungle for most of his life. I can easily get by on that compared to the other boneheaded idiots like Ban, Kai, and whatever the doofus from Goseiger's name was.
Carranger is one of the greatest Senati shows of all time. It also has what is probably the most satisfying conclusion of the entire series. Not to mention it pulls off drama better than most of the dramatic shows. I think Carranger might have maybe 3-5 weak episodes in total. The worst is an episode about ugly as **** suit jackets. |
I know Jan's reason is justified. I actually like it.
I just know a lot of people bitch and moan over his use of onomatopoeia and made up phrases. |
I'm doing my first rewatch of a Sentai with Battle Fever J since there is better video quality.
Battle Fever J 1-3: So far I am loving the hell out of it again. The characters are wonderful. Well mainly Battle Japan, France, Kenya, and Cossack are sticking out to be in the beginning. Really loved the episode where Japan acts like he betrays the team to find out about Egos. Cossack showed great emotion there and Kenya's loyalty was great. France had great moments in the second episode going undercover. So far I am remembering what I really enjoyed about this show. |

As for what I am watching at the moment I am slowly trudging along through Bioman, I do enjoy it but I think I'm suffering from a bit of toku burn out at the moment, I've enjoyed other 80s sentai more like Changeman, Flashman and Maskman. |
I'm currently watching Sun Vulcan again.
|
I just finish watching some Sentai Vs movies.
Abaranger vs Dekaranger it was a very boring movie to me didn't like it. Magiranger vs Dekaranger this was a cool movie I like it. It had a lot more plot focus in this movie for the two teams. Overall I enjoy the bricking between the two reds. On the talk of carranger I just could not find anything serious with that Sentai and it did nothing for me. Just way to much comedy IMO. |

Frankly, I think 90% of the versus movies are crap. The fanservice of getting to see your favorite team is about the only thing they have going for them.

CAAAAAAAAARRANGER!!! (33-36) Yeah that's right, four episodes instead of the usual three. Man I missed this show. I seriously don't even have anything to say about it besides "it's the s***" at this point, so let me switch things up and just say a little something about each episode: 33 - For a guy who looks like the forbidden love child of Yoda and a Garbage Pail Kid, it's kind of amazing how much I've come to enjoy Dapp(u). Seeing him back after his absence the past couple episodes was nice and seeing him remark on how the Carrangers have grown while he wasn't around (and they really have come a long way from getting forcibly dragged to their first fight) was cool. 34 - Apparently there are oden stands on Saturn. Amazingly, this probably isn't the craziest thing I've seen in Carranger. 35/36 (it's a two-parter) - Man, this is like, how many times now Signalman has been manipulated into fighting the Carrangers? I don't know who to feel more sorry for here, them or Signalman. |
Just finished Magiranger and liked it quite a bit. I like the theme and especially the family aspect to the season. It is a bit red-centric in the fights but overall I felt that all the characters got some growth during the season (and I don't mean the continual - "you had the courage to tie your shoes, you get a new spell"). I do like how they truly did get stronger over the season (unlike Hurricanger who never seemed to improve much) but I'm not a bit fan of the look of the Legendary powers.
The final 10 or so episodes with the Gods of Hell were really very well done and upped the stakes much more than in most Sentai series I've seen. Just started Boukenger and I'm not feeling it yet. I'm 5 episodes in and part of it, I think was the already formed team. There's very little introduction to the different characters. I do like the theme though and like the different villain factions so we'll see where it goes. |
Magiranger is one of those shows where the villian saved it for me.

Carranger 37-38:
Just two this time. I suppose that evens out watching four episodes in my last sitting, or something. Anyway, and brace yourselves, this might be a real shocker, but this show is still absolutely stellar. 37 shows once again how smart Carranger is, and I'll remind you, the whole point of this show is to be as dumb as possible. The (rather meta) plot revolves around the team getting really cocky and overconfident after constantly beating the bad guys week after week, while the bad guys become painfully aware of the fact they constantly get their crap kicked in by the team in a scene involving a notebook graph showing their current record (with one whole victory!), complete with dates corresponding to the actual air dates of the episodes, part of a fun little bit of detail throughout Carranger where events are consistently referred to as happening "last week" and such. Most of Toei's shows vaguely take place in real time, but Carranger takes it to the extreme. The attention to detail with Carranger in general is insane. Just one of many, many, many things to love about it. 38 features a guest star whose voice is distractingly dubbed over for some reason (I guess they didn't like the guy's voice?). I mean, it's a normal episode and it's good and all but this is like all I can think about it. It's so weird, and the lip sync goes full on "old Godzilla dubs" at points, not to mention I'm pretty sure you can faintly hear the actual actor's voice left in under the dubbed one in at least one scene. Really bizarre stuff. |
It could just be the ADR. I don't remember which episode that was, I'll have to take a look later.
|
God, I really want to continue Carranger, but that first episode was just so bad :lol
|
Give it a shot. It's pretty great

Let's dive into Carranger, episode 2!
First thing to note, some of the Bowzack's designs are actually rather unsettling. This villain, the Beethoven of noise pollution or whatever has a rather creepy design. Anyway, the episode beings about a lecture on money. Not the importance of making money. Just about how nice money is. Money money money. The director of the auto shop they own. Dappu waltzes in with their new weapon and knocks him unconscious with magic because he can. He then begins on a lecture about their new weapon, Giga Formula. Here comes the first laugh of the series, so the comedy people love so much has finally shown up. One by one, each ranger leaves with a flimsy excuse to get away from Dappu's lecture (Sans Yellow Racer). The final member to leave comes up with the excuse "I'll go along with everyone else and find someplace to go." What can I say, it's an honest reason~ Red happens along the MOTW making noise pollution and causing cars to levitate, calling in the team. The team being spread around the city, he gets his ass beaten to the sound of classical music as the team races to him (Literally). A funny moment is one henchman tripping and getting chased by a small dog. I loved it. The team shows up, and Dappu calls in the Giga Formula. After a quick run through the manual (Always a smart thing to do), they tear through the enemies and shoot the villain back into space. His noise pollution pisses off some passing by enemies who attack the Bowzack planet/ship/thing. Director is awoken on a computer, everyone working diligently. Episode 2 is a much better presentation than episode 1. It wasn't sloppy exposition on top of sloppy exposition on top of an average fight scene filled with sloppy exposition, so it's much easier to sit through and enjoy. |

Also, the ADR on AbaRed's daughter was down right dreadful because most of the time it always looked off. |
