People hated Cyclops since before the pheonix force even existed. Cyclops is kind of a scumbag.

Completely ignoring the fact that, out of all of the X-Men, Cyclops is the one who has sacrificed the most in pursuit of a future for Mutants on Earth. His happiness and his reputation have all been sacrificed by him time and time again for what he believed to be the good of his people.

Has he made terrible decisions? Yes.

Has he tried to atone for them time and time again? Yes.

Remember how Hank Pym has done so many good things yet he still gets "wife beater" as a description? Yeah, Cyclops gets to deal with that too.

Doing good things doesn't automatically make a character likeable. Or negate what the character has done in the past.

One of the best things about Cyclops nowadays is that even he wants to punch himself, both literally and figuratively, that inmediately made me like him more.
