I'm at episode 10 at Kaiji Season 2. I love it and it's just as good as the first season so far. It looks like a third season is not going to happen, but at least I have the manga to read. It seems like fans have translated up to 26 volumes so far.
|
Currently watching the Star Driver and Case Closed (Detective Conan) Japanese anime.
As for other anime, I'm thinking of watching the French animes Wakfu and Oban Star Racer. (And before you all start flaming me, I say "[country] anime" because of globalization. Don't hate.) |
I finish Kaiji Season 2 and I thought Season 2 was almost as good as Season 1. My biggest issue with Kaiji Season 2 was that I feel like there was not enough psychological thrills & games revolving around quick cunning & dangerous high stakes compare to the first Season. Not to mention the last arc with Kaiji trying to win the Bog pachinko went on for too long. I'm also not a fan of Otsuki, he was pretty meh compare to Seiya Ichijou. I like Seiya Ichijou for being a fun villain.
Kaiji Season 2 was still great though and I'm glad that I watch this franchise. It's a shame that Season 3 is not going to happen anytime soon, but at least Season 2 had a good ending though. |
So classic soccer manga Captain Tsubasa's anime is gonna be remade and I am looking forward to it because it was so old and long-running that I could not really get access to it or know where to start cause iirc it tells his story from his youth to him going pro. And I heard this is THE soccer manga/anime to see so I am glad us who did not grow up with it has a chance to experience it. I might have had some glimpses here and there but never really was invested in it.

Watched Ajin in two days and damn was that fun. Also finished Demon King Daimao and wow that ending was shit.
|
Ajin is great. One of my favorite series in this decade so far. I still need to watch Season 2 and catch up with the manga soon.
I'm watching Crying Freeman right now. I saw it on VHS back when I was 8 or 9 in 1999 or 2000, but never seen the last two episodes. I remember Streamline Pictures never finish dubbing the anime back in the day. |
So just finished King's Game and Inuyashiki today and damn is Inuyashiki good. Just damn I would say more but I don't want to spoil any of it. As for King's Game unless it interest you give it a skip. Though the opening and ending songs for both are good.

Just decided to check what I watched this year too, thinking it wasn't a whole lot. Then I was surprised by how much there was lol. Forgot I went through another period early this year catching up on movies and specials for long-running shows that I never got around to watching before. Feel like I said the same thing last year haha, and it's probably going to be true again next year because I'm still not done.
So things I finished this year...
Just copied the above directly from MAL and there's a couple super short stuff or even commercials I wouldn't normally count, but I don't feel like double checking everything and fully curating it. Soo there they are lol. Ongoing/started:
Didn't comment on what I watched as I watched it nearly as much as I used to, nor even as much as I wanted to. Very often wanted to come in and say something and just.. didn't. Hoping to change that next year. I do rather like (and miss) discussing what I'm watching. |
I forgot that I saw One Piece Film: Gold too. I'm not a huge One Piece fan or anything, but I found the movie to be decent.
I see people love Made in Abyss and told me to check it out. However from what I've seen that the show has some creepy loli/shota undertones and those type of stuff feels gross. So I will probably avoid it. |
Oh, finished Cardcaptor Sakura yesterday, just in time for Clear Card!

I watched Devilman Crybaby today. As someone who's only casually familiar with the source material I thought it was pretty good. The animation was great and I liked the new characters and the new plots.
It felt like it expanded on the manga while also incorporating new themes but it kept the really important aspects which worked out rather well. Some touches were especially fun, like making the first Devilman anime a thing that exists in this fictional universe. It was a nice excuse to give us a remix of the old theme, something I always appreciate in reboots/remakes. If you're a fan of Devilman you probably watched it already, if you don't know much about it I'd say give it a watch. But be warned, this is some really heavy shit right here. Not just because of the blood, gore, and sex. It gets worse than that... |
I watched all episodes of Pingu in the City and I am just waiting for the 13th Episode on Otaku Stream

I have seen six episodes of Devilman Crybaby and I really like it so far. The word of mouth on social media really surprises me. It seems like a lot of people are enjoying it more than I thought. I will post my final thoughts on the show later tonight in this thread.

What I love about the original manga and Crybaby is that it exploits the violence and nudity, but does so to convey a message about where society is going. It is edgy done right. I seen anime fans that view edgy as a bad thing when it is not always a bad thing. Titles like Berserk, Parasyte, The Guyver, Psycho Pass, Akira and Devilman do edgy right in my opinion while anime like Corpse Party, Future Diary and Akame Ga Kill (I did like it at first, but found myself hating it as time goes on) try too hard on being shocking and disturbing without doing it right in my opinion. |
Oh yeah definitely, it's not your super-edgy anime that just does this shit because it can, there's a message behind it. But the gore and sex you can usually deal with as an adult, the emotional stuff still hits you pretty hard though IMO.
What I really liked was reading how many people felt messed up after the ending, that really reminded me how I felt when I read the last few chapters of the manga :lol |
With Anime Strike's demise (finally!), I'm wasting no time catching up on some of the big shows I missed. So started Made in Abyss last night. Only watched 2 episodes, but already really like the character and world.
|
I will probably check out Inuyashiki, the new Garo anime and Ito Junji next after I'm done with Devilman Crybaby. I dig the first two volumes of the Inuyashiki manga. So I will probably enjoy the anime.
|
I don't know why I'm saying this but whenever I watch animes of Chi, like Chi's Sweet Home, I always get easily emotional, because of Chi, as she is adorable, cute, funny and happy. When Chi is happy and playful, I said to myself, that is what life should about. OMG I can't even stop crying :(

Devilman Crybaby - I finally watch the rest of the anime and I thought it was great. I'm a huge fan of the original Devilman manga and I wanted a new Devilman anime adaption for years ever since I read the manga for the first time like 9 years ago. I love how the story feel true to the source material, while doing its own creative take on the source material at the same time.
The anime still keeps the themes of Anti-War and Paranoia of the Unknown from the manga while modernizing the story and characters into a 21st Century World. The animation is wonderful and Yuasa's art direction really work for Devilman. Masaaki Yuasa is known for making art house avant-garde anime and his dark surreal art style is perfect for Devilman. While I do love the anime, I can admit that it does have flaws. The development between Akira and his parents could have been handled better in my opinion. Some of the sex scenes did felt a bit pointless at times. I know Devilman is meant to exploit things, but some of the sexual stuff did felt kinda unnessary. I do want to mention that the music is fantastic though. Overall, this is a great anime and I recommended it if you like horror anime, avant-garde animation or dark toku like Garo. |
When I watch Chi's Sweet Home, I sometimes go :cry when I feel emotional, but most of the times, I go :) when I feel happy. That is how I explain my feelings when watching Chi's Sweet Home

Just saw the first episode of Cardcaptor Sakura Clear Card. It's gorgeous and I like how they got the old cast back. Yuki sounds a bit different though

I try to sit through one episode of Black Clover on Toonami and I turn it off after 10 minutes of it. This has to be the most cliche thing that I have ever seen in an anime in a long time. This feels like a Dollar Tree version of Naruto when I try to watch it. Not to mention the screaming made my ears bleed.

This video explains the problems, but yeah, Black Clover has gotten a LOT of shit for being so cliche. MHA uses cliches but the rather unique American superhero setting and likeable cast make people ignore that. Especially as Deku's a very mild protagonist |

It does make me happy that older franchises like Devilman, Jojo and Parasyte can be successful in today's fandom. |
So, Clear Card.
I love it. Except for the fact Kero went from a Super Daidouji Entertainment System to a Boxstation 5X and everyone went from brick and flip-phones to Durian and Automaton smartphones in roughly 300 DAYS. Also it appears that this is anime continuity, not manga continuity. Which means Meiling might show up! |

Has anyone seen Porco Rosso?

Yes, it's a pretty good movie.

Any Pingu Fans here?

So I was too preoccupied with other stuff late this past year to really think or look at anything else, so I didn't get to look back at the crap I watched this year. I guess I'll do that now.
Series I watched in 2017: Gyakkuou Burai Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor (The back end of it at least) Gyakkyou Burai Kaiji: Hakairoku-hen JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken Chaos;Child 3-gatsu no Lion (second cour) Youjo Senki Nobunaga no Shinobi (second cour) ACCA: 13-ku Kansatsu-ka Gabriel DropOut Demi-chan wa Kataritai Koro-sensei Quest! ClassicaLoid (second cour) Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon NHK ni Youkoso! Jojo no Kimyou na Bouken: Stardust Crusaders Ryuu no Haisha (not actually a series) Detroit Metal City Shingeki no Kyojin Season 2 Fukumenkei Noise Little Witch Academia Cinderella Girls Gekijou Shirobako JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken: Diamond wa Kudakenai Trigun Gakkatsu! Second Season Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu Owarimonogatari 2nd Season Kemono Friends Digimon Universe: Appli Monsters (last 3 cours) Centaur no Nayami Made in Abyss Aho Girl Tsurezure Children Kakegurui Kubikiri Cycle Jigoku Shoujo Mahoujin GuruGuru Love Live Sunshine Second Season Cinderella Girls Gekijou Second Season Houseki no Kuni Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryouko (though I actually just watched the final episode just now) 3-gatsu no Lion Second Season (first cour) 66% of Fireball Humorous And like 3 episodes of Sakurasou no Pat na Kanojo And a number of movies and specials Some stuff. Not as much as in previous years, but I did read a shit ton of manga this year (and made a ton of progress with toku) so my attention was somewhat divided. My goal this year was to finally finish the ptw list I've had for now near damn half a decade. If I hadn't gotten sidetracked after starting Sakurasou two months ago, I probably would have accomplished that goal. That show's the last one left, but I don't know when I'll have the time now. Still pretty preoccupied with other stuff, and watching more anime is just not a priority right now. The last episode of Shouju Shuumatsu Ryouko I watched today is pretty much the first I've watched this year. Which also means I'm behind on some seasonals and have yet to start some new ones this season. Gonna be spending some time playing catchup once I have more time to spare on it. |
So I watch the first two episodes of Inuyashiki and it's petty good so far. It feels like had Japan did their own version of The Six Million Dollar Man (No Kamen Rider does not count since KR predates TSMDM). I do like some of it's black comedy too.

Made in Abyss was great and I really can't wait for more. Don't have time to pick up the manga right now, but the desire is strong.
Going to start Land of the Lustrous soon. |
