I don't typically like characters of her archetype because it feels like they're trying too hard to be cute, but she's managed to capture my heart. I mean, she has to have something special going on if I could sit through an "alien baby"episode and enjoy it. She also plays off the rest of the cast very well. |

I finished Gokaiger. Honestly, I absolutely loved it! New favourite Sentai! Only Sentai left I can watch is Kyoryuger (Other stuff I'm interested is officially released or I can only use TVN subs). I AM kinda curious about Flashman and Maskman though
|
It's going to be a long wait for Flashman. GUIS only did the first 10 episodes and then they kind of disappeared. And then for some reason some other group just did like random episodes which makes no sense to me.
|
I watched the Space Squad Dekaranger x Space Sheriff stuff. Bandai please, if you like Metal Heroes so much, just revive the dang franchise already instead of shilling it in random movies and specials. But what we really need to talk about here is the Space Squad Episode Zero part. I like to think I have a pretty high tolerance for the weird spinoff projects toku so frequently gets. But WHAT IN THE HELL WAS THAT!? Am I allowed to fire Sakamoto? I swear I don't think anything could have prepared me for survival-horror Dekaranger.
In other news, I have the Zyuranger DVD boxed set now, expect reactions in the near future! |

Yeah, if they want to revive Metal Heroes, they need to put either Sentai or Kamen Rider on the back burner. Take a year off for one of those and see what happens.

How so? Sentai has been on for 38 years straight that the series can clearly use a break as they just keep making the show worse each year since Gokaiger ended. They need to give it a year off to find new blood who can reinvorgorate the series both from a ratings standpoint and from a story telling one. They're safezone approach is not working anymore.
We need a modern day Sugimura. |
I'm not all that familiar with Metal Heroes, but it seems like it would be really ripe for some kind of Netflix or Amazon exclusive series. It would allow them to bank on the nostalgia of older fans for its revival more easily than if it was released as just a typical tokusatsu for kids on TV, and would help it stand out from the crowd.
|
Well it also doesn't help that this new Gavan dude cannot act and is not even a likable character.

I love the original Gavan series, but that man just gets cooler as he gets older for some reason. As for a Metal Hero show, I would prefer it to be something like Amazons, maybe not in tone or violence, but something kept far, far away from Super Hero Time. By all means make a few toys for the collector crowd, but last thing I want is a new Space Sherriff with, say, fruit-shaped padlocks. Anyway, started Timeranger last night, only had time to watch one episode, but I liked it. Good start for my first oldish sentai in a while. |

A slightly more serious tone would be cool but not necessarily as edgy as Amazons, gotta be something in between. |

Besides, what would taking the show off the air fix? The show changes almost completely every single year. A new cast, a new writer, everything. The problems you listed off are things that have less to do with the show itself and more to do with Toei as a company. Watching none Toei Tokusatsu and comparing them to whatever Toei is doing that year is proof enough that every company has it own style no matter who the writer or director is. Taking the show off the air, or putting up a new one in its place, would at best be simply be old problems with a new coat of paint. An changes to *fix* the show can be made without missing a year. Besides, who are you to say the show isn't working anymore? I've heard plenty of people say they like Zyuohger and Kyuranger and, toy sales wise, the only shows since Gokaiger that I know have been failures were Go-Busters and Ninninger. Kyoryuger and Toqger were both successful, I haven't heard of Zyuohger being anything other then average, and Kyuranger been doing pretty good so far. The only show that seems to have been a failure in every way was Ninninger. |
I binged my way right through Zyuranger! It wasn't the most mind blowing thing ever, but it was cute, fun, whimsical, and a touch melancholy. Having only watched Deka and Aba before, it was very interesting to go back and see an earlier show. I liked that the fomat wasn't as concrete back then, especially since they didn't force a mech fight at the conclusion of every story! The protagonists may not have been the most distinctive, but they were likeable and always fun to watch. Bandora and her crew were just a campy delight though, and I loved every second of it! I couldn't keep it together whenever they randomly burst into a villainous song and dance number, it was great. All together, it really did give the feeling of a fairy tale, not all that preoccupied with the finer points of making sense, but crazy and facinating nonetheless. A new favorite for me! I have a bunch more Sentai DVDs incoming though, so who knows how long that will last.

Since you loved Zyu, you will definitely love Dai and Kaku. They are all done by the same guy and all have the same feel, but none of them are the least bit alike.

Best power up suit for super sentai?

Watched the Girls in Trouble movie the other morning. I liked it and really hope we get a lot more female-led stuff like this in future. Jasmine and Umeko were as great and ever and Toei are absolutely wasting the Space Sheriff cast. These characters are all superb and all they get is a movie every couple of years or so, its such a shame.
What I could have done without though was the obvious fetishisation of the whole thing. While the first half was undoubtedly the better part of the movie it was all too excessive. Sakamoto really needs to learn when to rein it in :/ |
They are? I hate the dude that plays the new Gavan. Not only can he not act, but his character is not even remotely likable. He's more wooden than a forest.

And anyway he's perfectly fine. And even if he wasn't that's still only one of of the seven New Generation Space Sheriff leads that have already been established. |
Finished Zyuranger in just a few days and I've been positively surprised.
Kids were kinda annoying (even for Sentai standards) but it surely has some nice mech battles in there. Now I'm thinking about whether to further go on with 90s sentai chronologically (starting with Ohranger) or catch up on Showa sentai first (Changeman and Maskman, maybe Battle Fever as well). |

Yeah, I can tell you that watching Bioman, Changeman, and Dynaman in a row is not a good idea. Although, Dynaman at least has energy and is fun compared to its successors.

If you were talking about his original appearance and maybe the Go-Bus crossover then fine, but he's gotten better since then and was great in Space Squad. As for being likeable, you don't like impulsive reds so you were never going to like this guy. |
Well to be fair, no, I have not watched Space Squad. Not even sure what that is, but I really didn't care for him in the Kyuuranger episode with Dekaranger (but that episode was just meh as a whole anyway).
|
Space Squad is the movie said Kyuranger episode was advertising.
And honestly I'd probably go as far as to call it my favourite toku crossover ever. Especially if they deliver on that ending and do another one. |
Did you see it in Japan? Wasn't it a theatrical movie?
|
Yeah, but that flick has been subbed quite some time ago by Over-Time. Same with Episode 0, its prequel.
Btw, how much knowledge about Dekaranger and Space Sherrifs should I have before watching that flick? So far I've only seen the original Gavan show. |
Quote:
It would certainly also help to at least have seen the first of the Next Generation Space Sheriff movies, because the guys in those movies are the faces of the Gavan half of that one. |

Gavan you only need to have really seen the movie and then the Next Gen Space Sheriff movies. Juspion....eh. You might get a little more out of it (mainly a bit more context on Mad Gallant and Satan Goth) but its not essential. |
Quote:
Honestly given Satan Goth's depiction, I'm not even sure the writer(s) have seen Juspion. Because Goth isn't mechanical. |
Hah, I haven't even seen Juspion and I wondered what was up with that :lol
|
Quote:
Yeah the depiction was bizarre. I guess they didn't want the whole mask since it would look like a lawsuit from Disney waiting to happen. But they had other ways around that. |

It didn't work out all that well, that much I can agree on. |
