I watch a lot of things with those kinds of subs. I feel that when stuff is fully translated, it makes it seem sort of localized. It's hard to describe. Some things just don't seem right when translated.

To be honest I'm really picky about what I look for in subs. For example, I hate seeing honorifics in subtitles but at the same time some sub groups will swap out Japanese references and puns for American ones which I find equally as annoying. While I want to understand something in the best level of English I can I don't really want to have the entire joke localised.

Still, I'm grateful that there's such a variety of subs available to cater to everyone rather than being stuck with just one kind :)

That is the point of a translation. A translation is not to make everything literal. That would sound just awful. What is the point of not translating words that have valid translations. I mean if you prefer the sounds of Japanese words, then why not just watch raws?

Because some people (me included) likes the sound of the Japanese language, and knows some, but does not know enough to understand everything. Like people can watch Go-Buster Raws and get a gist of what's going on, but not have a full understanding till the Sub is released.

That's fine. You like the sound of the Japanese language. That isn't the point of a fansub or a pro sub. A sub is meant to allow people that DO NOT know the original language the show is in, to understand it in their own language. Not leave random words untranslated just because the subbers or sub fans like the sound of Japanese words. How can you have a full understanding of a sub unless it's fully translated? Not many people know what tachi and other words mean in English. A sub watcher should not have to pause the show to find out what some random Japanese word means.

I've seen that before. It just depends on how much you enjoy/understand the language and culture. Yes, translating everything is the ideal way, but some people enjoy it more when some stuff is left alone.

A similar problem with subtitles I have is suppose an English show/movie is dubbed into another language. I hate when the subtitles on DVD's and such for that is merely a transcript of the English script and not an actual translation of the translation. If that isn't confusing at all.

Agreed. I am one of those people as well. I have learned a fair bit of Japanese from subs such as TVN.

I'm sorry but no. You do not learn Japanese watching fansubs. You learn it by taking classes. Any real translator or person that has studied Japanese or any other language would say the same. You can not learn a language by watching fansubs. And again, like the other person, you miss the point. It doesn't matter what you perfer hearing. Subs are meant to allow a person to enjoy a show that does not speak the shows original language. Leaving random phrases and words in only caters to the people that think Japanese is a special thing that can not be changed, or to people that like the sound of Japanese words. To that I say that's great. But don't think that's how subs should really be.

Yeah this sums it up. The only reason I generally don't go the OT route is because their subs are a bit too casual for my taste and I don't really like just how much they translate. Example being Pirate Sentai when Kaizoku Sentai is just fine. An example of the casualness would be Fourze wanting to be bros whereas TVN translates it as buds. Its minor things that I base my preference on. I still really appreciate OT and the speed they get things done at alot.

That's not casual, that is real translation. But if you want to go that rout and call OT casual, than t-n is simply lazy. It's laziness to leave perfectly translatable words left in Japanese. And just exactly how is Buds any better than Bro's? I mean come on.
